  • @FalconsTech

    This new "reliability" rating isn't based on any actual real data though. It's just based on features to come up with a POTENTIAL reliability rating. That's a HUGE difference. A true rating for reliability should be factoring in return rates, breakage frequency, and maybe even warranty support (does it get fixed correctly, how long does it take, etc). Obviously companies won't willingly provide such detailed information, so it would likely need to almost entirely crowd sourced. So if you're not going to do that, then you're just giving viewers a false sense of reliability. For example, all of the Apollo scooters in the video have over 9/10 ratings. But nearly every Apollo scooter launches with CATESTROPHIC problems. Do they eventually get fixed? Probably, otherwise they wouldn't still be in business. But you're giving viewers the sense that they're a very reliable brand to buy from based on specs alone. See what I mean?

    • @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide
      @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide  Před 3 měsíci +6

      Since putting all the miles on ourselves wasn't practical and relying on second hand information can also be super unreliable, and hard to get in volume, then modeling based on factors which impact long-term ownership is the best way to go.
      I spent weeks coming up with the best, most detailed model for reliability that I could make. What I like about this model is that it updates itself every time I add a new scooter to the database, so it's something I can keep using and improving on as time goes on. -Paul

      This is not the first time ESG has been explicitly called out on their rating of Apollo scooters.
      @SirFalconer thank you for pointing this out and suggesting they do reevaluate the reliability rating inputs.
      Obviously post purchase customer support, warranty and part reliability are the key pillars for reliability ratings.
      Paul, it not an excuse to say you will keep iterating your website on the reliability ratings after you have posted the video. You are influencing people to buy products. So based on this video Apollo scooter are the most reliable, but the whole industry knows they have many recalls and constant iterations once they release their products. There post purchase customer support is not amazing too. (Speaking from experience)

By the way my channel has nothing to do with escooters and I am not trying to grow it in any way.

    UL safety listing for batteries should be a mandatory requirement for all escooters and ebikes across the board. If they're poorly made from China, should be banned.

    • @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide
      @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide  Před 3 měsíci +11

      I think we're heading that way. I haven't confirmed this, but I've heard a rumor that Amazon requires UL-2272. So the pressure to certify is strong! It's expensive though. I think it costs the scooter brands 10's of thousands of dollars to do it, and then if they make significant changes they have to do it again. Well worth it though, because unsafe scooters could end the whole industry. I was happy to see NYC take a reasonable approach and not push for an outright ban. -Paul

      Agree 100%. My apartment building issued a rule that nobody can have an escooter or ebike anywhere on the premises. I told them my ebike (a Jack Rabbit) is UL certified, they didn't want to hear it because of the bad reputation these mobility devices have.

    • @robertfeliciano5723
      @robertfeliciano5723 Před 3 měsíci

      @@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide Interesting. "significant changes" does that mainly refer to the electronics?
      Meaning they can change from aluminum to carbon fiber frame and be okay?
      Can they change from solid wheel to tubeless without re-certification?

    • @NunchucksHabit
      @NunchucksHabit Před 3 měsíci +4

      @@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide Exactly. It doesn't take too many apartment fires to bring about a ban. Motorists are jealous of them, bicyclists have to share space with them, people too scared to ride them consider them the mosquitoes of transportation. Not to mention, the psychos who rent scooters for a couple of hours of drunken mayhem tend to be the ones most remembered. Add fire risk & remove overcharge/current protections (on the battery, not just software), and some guy who got a 'rebuilt' battery on the cheap just charcoals his entire building - people aren't exactly impressed. People will ban everything they don't want personally, unless someone sticks up for the industry - and it's not just business owners, but users like myself. I've bought 3 scooters since this time last year & I'll be buying a 4th soon. If people in Toronto do what London, England & Ireland did (limited them all to a pathetic like 20mph), the industry will die, and fast.

    Glad to see the Wolf King mentioned. I've had my Wolf Warrior 11+ for 4 years now, and it's done 13,000 miles. It's been hassle-free that whole time, just requiring tire and brakes changed every 4,000 miles. I think the reliability comes from the heavy-duty frame and the quality of the battery (60V 35AH LG). It would be nice if it was more water proof though, because water can get inside the deck in heavy storms. But overall it has been rock solid.

      Apollo has an easily accessible service center here in NYC and its scooter (Apollo Air) is more durable/water resistant, has higher battery capacity, higher top speed, longer range and has less exposed wires than the F2 Pro while being the same weight and most of all, drum brakes that are far less maintenance intensive compared to the mechanical disc brakes that my F2 Pro has.
      In fact, F2 Pro's brakes have started to weaken and squeak after riding it in all the snow and slush and I have a commute requiring the use of my scooter or other2ise, I may be inevitably 30 minutes late to home or work if I miss the ferry due to a bus simply being late!

    Would be interested to see a fully anonymous audit of scooter manufacturers (ie. purchase a number of scooters from a single manufacturer, verify quality on delivery, and place a series of customer service and warranty claims to see how they respond). IMO this would be a hugely important metric for something like a reliability score, and it seems like ESG would be the only channel that is dedicated enough to the escooter community and also has the resources to back it up.
    The consensus on parts availability and delivery times and build quality for household names like Apollo seem to differ wildly depending on where you look. I consider myself to toe the line between a more dedicated escooter fan and a casual one, so it's difficult for me to understand which is the reality.

    Yeah, I have to admit, I am running into a lot of issues with my Mantis V2. Rear hub motor I think has a stripped screw, or the beginnings of one. >.> And I've not even hit 1000 miles yet! Makes me worried for the future a little.
    Front disc rotor is *somehow* bent, it's fairly profound at that because IDK how the hell it happened, but it makes the front brakes almost unusable and borderline dangerous, so I've gotta get that fixed soon, but to do that I have to remove the deck and completely open up the entire scooter's guts because the wire for the motor runs through the center of the disc itself. Brakes on both the front and back are... not distanced correctly and cannot be readjusted as is without swapping out the brake pads themselves, so they scrape lightly as I ride and reduce coasting distance. I've had two popped rear tubes in less than two months, though I am sure the second was because of the horrible roads I had to ride over the week before it happened.
    I'm... VERY hesitant to recommend anything Kaabo to anyone else right now. I was considering going for a Mantis King GT in the future as a upgrade, but I might end up saving more and just going to Nami instead for the easier maintenance I've seen in other reviews. >~>

      What sort of issues, other than the stripped screw. Was it stripped when you received it? -Paul

    • @imglidinhere
      @imglidinhere Před 3 měsíci

      @@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide As far as I can tell it wasn't stripped when I received the scooter itself, though I am still at odds as to how it could have happened otherwise. I always go counter-clockwise to seat the first thread in before trying to screw anything in. I got the replacement part from Fluid Freeride and it was exactly what was needed, so no fault on their end whatsoever.
      I really is a bit of a gamble with all of these scooters. You guys get cherry picked, perfect designs as review samples to show off, but never see what WE get as customers. Maybe do a secret shopper thing and try to hide who you are when you buy things. Gamer's Nexus does this with gaming PCs from various vendors and resellers and it exposes a LOT of the problems people often talk about.
      Might be worth checking that out. My V2 isn't falling apart like R9K's original V1 did, but I've run into several issues that are otherwise quite troubling. I've replaced four tubes in two months by this point, all rear tire. Two screws are flat out just STUCK like they were welded in place, one on the right side for the rear suspension spring and the hinge spring, the disc rotor at the front as previously mentioned being warped somehow, the front screws are just as over-tightened so I'll need help breaking the seal on those, etc. It's kinda rough. I would really like you guys to do some kind of secret shopper program on some level to see how these companies actually treat their customers because what YOU experienced with the V2 is not what I experienced, clearly.

    oh snap, ESG back from the dead! i think how low maintenance or how often a scooter breaks down should be part of the requirement. You also HAVE TO start doing portability rating. For example. Most that watch you and buy, don’t own cars, and live in CITIES with busses or trains. Demonstrate folding and taking on a bus. Also carrying up apartment steps. THESE tests show actual portability. NOT putting it in the trunk of a CAR.

    • @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide
      @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide  Před 3 měsíci

      Interesting idea. We used to do stairs a lot, but didn’t get a lot of feedback about it so we stopped.
      We try to always cover folding in the reviews.
      I’m curious if we could come up with a meaningful score for portability since for some it’s mainly weight (stairs), for some it’s length (trunk) and some it’s width (banging your shins on handlebars in an apartment).
      If we were to score it, I suppose we could use total volume of the largest dimensions, weight and folding time. Maybe score the stem-to-deck latches on ease of latching and probability of unlatching when you don’t want them to. -Paul

    • @alexsherel3344
      @alexsherel3344 Před 3 měsíci

      @@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide as you are, from my experience and observation in responding to myself AND OTHERS you have to be SINGULARLY the best doing this, but banging shins on handlebars should only happen ONCE. After that you lean it against a wall or something🤣🤣🤣
      Ps like I said, most who buy these DO NOT own a car BECAUSE they live in a city. I’m guessing you’re in SF or surrounding area. Seeing some of the hills and the ocean at the same time gives me that impression. I’m in Philly burbs. Busses galore but not everywhere out here so renting a room( with very limited space, just enough to fold it, lean it against a wall, and plug it in at night) or an apartment building that usually has 3 floors, one downstairs, and 2 floors up. In an actual city around here like Trenton, Philadelphia, NYC, etc there’s stairs to your apartment. For those living in a home, they 99% own cars SND USE THEM INSTEAD. That’s my only point. If reviewers actually thought about these things, this could actually be a viable option as many live close enough to get back and forth on a single charge.

      We included the KQi3 Max instead. To me they are basically the same scooter in terms of reliability, but I like the range and performance of the Max, just a little better.
      Whenever we make a list-video, it’s always a combination of factors in addition to the one main factor we’re measuring. For example the MacWheel pro has amazing range per dollar, but still wouldn’t make the list of best scooters for range per dollar because even though it may win on range, it needs to also win at being a “best” scooter in general.
      Don’t get me wrong though, the KQi3 Pro is one of the very best. We just like the max a tiny bit better as an all arounder. -Paul
