    If you spend more then 2k on a scooter/have one that goes above 30~ I STRONGLY suggest takeing a beginners motorcycle course. So many of the principles are transferable for like 200~ dollars. It might not exactly save your life but it could help you become a better rider in general. A lot of it is common sense but there are many tips and tricks I was able to apply to my scooting

      @Electric Scooter Guide if you have your motorcycle permit you can even get your motorcycle license, provided you pass the test. The license might not be required in your state to ride your scooter but it certainly might help if you ever get stopped by some ignorant cops. Especially if you're rideing a hyper scooter and going above 40-50.

      Yup. Looking ahead is your best friend. I'm also messing with my lights for exactly this reason: the difference between a 2w bike light and 10-20w led's is massive and they're not even that expensive. I wish manufacturers provided a 12v (or higher) hookup near the handlebars, because many factory lights are hilariously underpowerd at the speeds many of these scooters can achieve.

    I remember one time, I was going downhill with my VSETT 10+, trying to control the breaking so I would not speed up out of control. For some reason, in a given spot I felt the rear tire skeeding out of control, so it was unavoidable I was gonna fall.
    I remembered one of the few advices I had back when I decided to get me an eScooter: if you're about to crash, jump out of the scooter. So I did. I jumped out of the scooter like on this guide but since I was still riding downhill, I had to run and keep my ballance for about 150 meters. it was scary but I left there without a single scratch. The scooter got really minor cosmetic scratches but needed some adjustment on the handlebar.
    So, yeah, mind your stance and be prepared to ditch your scooter if you have to. I basically dodged serious bruising that day.

      It feels a little dangerous to jump off a scooter in speeds over running speed feels like twisted or broken feet is about to happen. I am thinking if you have full motorcycle gear could be to jump off and roll on the ground like they do in bike racing or how parkour guys dampen their falls. Idk I am just guessing.

      @@sebulbathxif u are going faster than u can run u gotta try to jump as soon u hit the ground to give yourself more time to slow down then try to start running when u hit the ground again. Works up to about 25-28 mph anything past that and your s.o.l.

      Really wish I had read this sooner, skidded on black ice going 22MPH around a bend and was dragged across the road and thankfully didn't break anything alongside my scooter having a few minor scratches and the headlight mount needing to be bent back into place, but ended up having inflammatory tissue in my right hand and wasn't wearing a helmet etc. as well so stupidly lucky with the way it turned out, but I probably could've avoided all of the injuries if I did that, I'll keep it in mind, thanks for that

    I recently started riding an electric scooter for general commute and I naturally started to impliment some of these after just a couple trips like the wide stance, steering with the feet and shifting down and back to break without much thought. Great tips because it does feel really nice. I'll try using both breaks I haven't used the back break much. I did have an instance where I had to "let go". My first time riding there was a rail road that kind of went up the street at an angle and not just straight across and soon as I saw it I worried about getting stuck in it with my small wheels so i ran it out beside the scooter and caught myself then continued riding on the other side. From then on I also started looking farther ahead of the road.

  • @sebulbathx
    @sebulbathx Před rokem +8

    Great video and tips!
    Looking ahead and steering with the feet has made the biggest difference for me. I try to only hold the handlebar as a support and try to use my legs for most of the balance and steering. Also looking far ahead gives me more stability in higher speeds +30mph. I mean if I go in that speed and I look at front tyre for wobble I get wobble instantly but at the same speed looking far ahead I have no wobble and it feels stable. IDK it might sound weird but I think many wobble situations might be due to the rider than the scooter.

    there was another time, riding downhill again, this time with a Dualtron Thunder2, there were wet sections of the road, and the hill was REALLY steep, so it was very easy to pick up speed. There were MANY spots where I thought "... this is it!, I'm going down!..." But kept my stance, tried to control the braking and weight distribution and all that I knew could help me stay riding and not falling.
    In the end, I happened to make it out unscathed from that hill, did not fall, but vowed to NEVER do that again, at least NOT on that hill. That was stupidly scary.
    So, yeah, learn how to stop, mind your stance, how to steer and then some. You never know when you're gonna need to apply everything at once so you don't fall and hurt yourself.

    Love these tips. I'm still a bit scared to turn sharp corners at 10mph+ but I'm working on it. Definitely, definitely wear safety gears. If anything, wear a full face helmet. Even being on scooters that only get to 15mph, a fall can be fatal or at least hurt very badly. Even at a jogging pace of 8mph, would you want to suddenly tip over and fall to the ground? Probably not, so wear a full face helmet. I see so many people forego this around here just because they're only going down the street or a block away.

    I have been riding for a couple years and I have a 5600W 60mph scooter so I wear a full helmet, knee and elbow pads, gloves that have impact resistance, a thick leather jacket and I thick padded shirt I repurposed from its original paintball purpose. I have several thousand miles on my scooters but not 2 weeks into owning my brand new powerful scooter I was riding on a trail and suddenly came upon a corner out covered in the trees and it was wet and covered in leaves. I had never had any kind of trouble riding yet but as I entered that corner the scooter slipped slightly and it was just enough that my body kept going straight and I went down straight on my chest with my arms extended out. It was slow motion and I felt like I was going through a checklist in my head and I was wearing all my safety gear. The impact was hard but it did not hurt me in any way shape or form in all the places I was wearing pads. This was a wonderful feeling.
    However, I was wearing a backpack that had my tools in it and it did not have a chest strap. The left side shoulder strap had slipped down and was covering my upper arm and I just swung it back up on my back whenever I stopped. But when I payed my scooter down my arms extended out in front of me to break my fall and as I hit I immediately felt my shoulder separate because that strap. It was so incredibly painful and I just couldn’t even put my arm in front of me at all to grab the handlebars. But I was in the middle of nowhere and I had to ride out of there. During the course of getting back I ended up redislocating my shoulder over and over and over because the ligaments and tendons were stretched out and the slightest movement was causing my arm to dislocate again. Each time it did I would be frozen in pain in the position I was in and had to sit and wait for minutes for it to finally pop back into the socket.
    After over an hour of this I made it to a bus stop that I was familiar with and I waited for the bus to go over to the emergency room. My scooter weighs over 100 pounds and I had a heavy backpack as well and as the bus pulled up I tried quickly to tell the driver I had injured my arm and I was hoping he could put the ramp down so I wouldn’t have to pick the whole scooter up and carry it over the gap between the curb and the bus. His response was, “THE RAMP!?!” My head dropped and so I grabbed my scooter and backpack with my good arm and I did my very best to keep my other arm just locked against my side, but it had been popping out freely for almost a couple hours at that point. I got my scooter onto the bus and it was completely full and everyone was staring at me and just then my shoulder went out of socket and I was frozen once again just holding my stuff. The bus driver acted bothered and he hit the gas and threw me all over the bus with my shoulder still out and no place to even sit. Not a soul got up to help me out and I sat paralyzed. Nobody knew what was probably wrong with me, bu after about two minutes my shoulder slid back into place and screamed out in pain. My shoulder popping back in was so noticeable that everyone on the bus gasped and didn’t even realize it was out until they saw it slide back in. Every bump made me wince and I finally made it to the emergency room. It turned out that I had completely broken the shoulder side of my shoulder socket in half and half was free floating. It was emergency surgery to fix it. I learned some very valuable lessons that day.

    I love that you mentioned steering with your feet. I see so many people posting about problems with the stem, and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they aren't doing this. The handlebars are largely unnecessary with practice (though I don't condone riding without using the handlebars. I'm just demonstrating a point.) They are just there to give you a display and something to control throttle. You can completely steer your scooter with your feet, and doing so is not only more comfortable as you mentioned, but it also prevents damage to the stem. Due to the length of the stem you have a lot of leverage, and if you're putting all of your body weight on that as you turn / accelerate / decelerate you are going to wear it out faster.

      Stem steering works for me when I’m forced to ride close to a curb. Pulling the stem, not turning the stem. It’s kind of a way to force control if you feel that you’re getting sucked in.

    Agree on everything. Been riding like that almost since day one. The only thing that I haven't mastered yet is jumping on a light scooter. The ones with suspension - no problem, just need to compress the suspension prior to jumping.

I'm definitely going to be saving up for one of them top of the line scooters no doubt now. I live in a small town and work about 20 mins away walking. The scooter turned that into like 7 minutes lol I'm not aloud to drive so this is such a game changer. If anyone has any tips on any accessories for e scooters please lmk. Im trying ti learn the best brands for certain stuff and would live to not waste money on crappy parts lmao thank you in advance 👍🤝

    • @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide
      @ESG-ElectricScooterGuide  Před rokem +2

      You'll get used to it over time. Stance and balance help a bit because it prevents you from accidentally pulling even more when the scooter lurches forward and you lurch backward.
      The other thing that seems to help me (and I don't know why) is keeping my trigger finger more flat (less curled around the trigger) and sort of using friction to pull it back.
      I also like adjusting the throttle physically as close to the brake lever as possible.
      If you want to go further, there's always running single motor or non-turbo, but that's no fun. You can fine-tune using p-settings if all else fails. I n the past, I used to just max all p-settings out, but now sometimes I back initial acceleration off a notch. I think P12 is the setting for initial acceleration on the Ghost (double check in the manual though). And I think 5 is highest initial acceleration and 1 is lowest. -Paul

    I’m undecided about the stance. I feel that front ft toes forward gives you better accuracy. Especially on city sidewalks, weaving between obstacles. I’d liken it to throwing. The ball goes best where your lead toes are pointing. It also makes it easier to bail at traffic lights, still hold the handle bars when you have to hit a cross walk button. However, checking your 6 is more difficult in this stance.

  • @korencek

    Number 1 tip for beginners: Left foot on front left side, right foot on back right side. This will ensure that you can properly turn in corners. Make sure that both feet are not on right or left side. Having one foot on the front and one at the back will allow you to tilt backward when braking and tilt forward when accelerating.
    Because center of gravity is so high above the wheels you're basically surfing on wheels. You don't need to drive around potholes but keep your body steady and turn the wheel of the scooter to evade the pothole and then turn it back quickly to move the scooder back under you.

    @3:55 I wonder about by this explanation of weaving as lining up the sum of normal and centripetal force vectors with your center of gravity. When scooting, wouldn't the normal force always act perpendicular to the ground while the centripetal force points towards the center of the circle the scooter is turning around. In that sense, we're not really lining up force vectors as you've described, as they are necessarily not aligned often during our weave. It seems more accurate to say we're maintaining a balance where the overall torque (rotational force) on the system is zero, preventing us from eating shit. Sure, normal force, centripetal force, but also inertia, gravity, etc. -- just a thought. Thanks for the tips.

    Thank you for the video. Another tip i would like to add is: ride you scooter just like your riding a skateboard then if you find road with some many nicks and holes then try to keep your weight on the leg that is on the back side of the platform so in case the front wheel get caught so hard on some hole then it wont throw you forwards to a sure fall

    The timeline on this video I just noticed was 6 months ago, so I hope you still check this for new comments.
    I've been seriously considering getting a commuting scooter to replace my daily travel from my large SUV to something more budget friendly. I'm apprehensive however because I live up towards a small mountainside with a slightly considerable incline of perhaps 30 degrees or around there, and just risking traveling upwards on it with the two turns I need to make cause me to overthink on the purchase a little. My mind is set on an Inmotion RS (for the 50 miles or so of daily commute) scooter if the power could offset the incline, but are there any suggestions you might have for uphill travel on scooters?
