  • This video, I review The Star Beast, the first of the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, featuring David Tennant as the Doctor, Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, and Heartstopper's Yasmin Finney as Rose! I also address the surplus of "Doctor Who goes WOKE with PRONOUNS" videos

Star Beast was great and the only scene that I don't like is the weird one at the end. It didn't help that my initial interpretation was just male bashing (I get that it wasn't meant that way... probably idk). But whatever. Great episode.
And great Video! You are a very good video essay channel :)

I love the attic crawl part. Seeing them go through the attic through the sky light with all the carnage going on outside. It was very entertaining. 😂
Just found your channel. Enjoying it!
Dang. Just got to your woke rant. Well said sir. Very well said. I’m impressed. You have a new sub.

Honestly, my only issue with the special was them saying a "male presenting timelord wouldn't understand." Saying that like The Doctor isn't gender fluid and multiple flavors of queer. I get it was supposed to be a comment at cis het men, but saying it to The Doctor is absurd to me. If anything he's one of the few male presenting people who DOES understand it!

Im still a bit mad that Rose Noble was never actually a Companion.

I don't think that the critique of the show being too "woke" means that it shouldn't have progressive themes in it. After all, Doctor Who has always had these themes. But I think it's more about how the themes are being brought up. Asking the Doctor "did you assume a pronoun" or calling him a "male presenting Time Lord" just feels so heavy handed. After all, I am watching DW, not some random kids arguing on Twitter. So, they should include these things in a more clever way, such as the metacrisis being resolved by Rose being non-binary. That was actually a really impressive piece of writing. So I'd like to see them do more things like that.

Damn. That's a really good video.
Editing, little jokes (Heaven Sent one really got me laughing) and also just... I don't know it's kinda cozy.
I personally didn't like the Star Beast. And I am honestly afraid that it's because I might be unconciously a bit transphobic, but... I actually think that its not, I dont like how they handled pacing at times, and... I don't know, the Doctor not being concered with Donna finding out the truth, while Donna's family tries to hide him from her... Just seems like something the Doctor should do.
But ok, enough with my perception.
I want to thank you for giving me positivity about the episodes. I've made a mistake of going to the channels, filled with "THE WOKE CULTURE JUST DESTROYED HOLLYWOOD" type of content, to see what people thought about the episodes and it left me feeling... I don't know... Just sad. But it's good seeing that other people actually liked the Davis's writting being back and... I've said that I didnt enjoy The Star Beast that much, but overall I think new episodes are rather good, just not perfect and didnt land for me at times.
I am sorry for the long comment, just kinda thought that I could write some thing longer than a sentance and it turned into an essay. I enjoyed your video and will be looking forward to seeing more.
I found you from Harbo Wholmes's video through recommendations, so I hope you are getting picked up by the algorithm and I hope you get more views.
    Thank you again, goodbye

Hey if it helps. I don't think you're transphobic. If you you're not a fan of something like the Star Beast, it doesn't automatically mean you're against trans people or anything like that. There are positives and not so positives things about the episode as a whole. Great cinematography, great performances from old cast members and the visual effects really stunning. I think where the episode struggles is with the pacing of trying to fit some much in less than an hour. Rose sort of dips in and out of the story after being promoted as such a prominant character leading up to the special's release. She didn't get that much character development because you have so many characters onscreen sharing the scene and you have Donna's metacrisis pretty much in everyone's focus. The threat of her mind burning up keeping the auidence on the edge of their seats. You said it yourself, the pacing was a bit all over the place. So don't stress if the episode didn't land for you at times. It's more likely down to pacing and story development.

@@chickowar9412 No Worries Mate 🙂 Hope that helps put your mind at ease. I've seen loads of comments and people reviewing the Star Beast since it came out and they have said similar reactions to you. They too have said the pacing is a bit off here and there. And lines like the "Male Presenting" bit doesn't exactly win people over nor does it do any favors for new characters like Rose Noble. Generally, if something isn't presented that well in a TV series or movie, it doesn't automatically mean people hate the whole idea of it. It just means they didn't like how it was played out in that particular piece of media. For example, It's like how some fans don't like Orphan 55 but that doesn't mean they're against looking after the environment. Where as The Green Death was all about looking after environment and lots of people love that story. It all comes down to how the production team and writers go about developing those ideas into solid stories the audience can really sink their teeth into. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Hope that makes sense and helps put things into perspective. :)
