Peter Capaldi: Doctor Who's Underrated Peak
Finally, after months of work, here is my analysis of the Peter Capaldi era of Doctor Who! What better way to start pride month, am I right.
This video (of course) contains spoilers for series 8-10 of Doctor Who, as well as spoilers for a bunch of other episodes and eras of the show. If you haven't seen at least the entirety of New Who, watch at your own discretion.

Explaining Doctor Who's BIGGEST Plot Holes

Doctor Who canon makes no sense. With plenty of contradictions in the lore, from William Hartnell in 1963, to David Tennant in 2005, to Ncuti Gatwa in 2024, there are plenty of aspects of the show that make no sense. So I tried to explain some of YOUR biggest complaints with Doctor Who lore!

    As someone who saw the New Who era without any input from fans, i found some of my favorite episodes were the ones more vocal fans dont like. Like the Dalek Sekt episodes, the episode about a bunch of people noticing the Doctor and the TARDIS and start making a fanclub, and 11th Doctors episodes with James Corden. And after watching Capaldi's Doctor, 12 became one of my favorite ones too as I really liked the entire concept of Doctor just being a grumpy old man who almost doesnt WANT to care and sees saving lives as babysitting complete with occasionally scolding people when they're stupid (like the "sit down and talk!" speech) I liked the stories told and Doctors more relaxed but cynical attitude. I didnt even know 12 was disliked until I finally started seeing what other fans thought of the show. I think the show's a lot better if you just dont sit in an echo chamber of people who dont like something when watching it. And accept, like Clara did, that the Doctor changing is apart of him and an integral part to the show. Ive seen people not watch more than Tennant because they just loved him so much and didnt like someone else taking the name. But its in lore the exact same character with a in universe progression but just a different point in the Doctors increasingly long life. And in an echo chamber where everyone seems to spout about how much they hate the new guy, someone who hasnt seen what they're talking about may either jump in or start going into that part of the show with a negative lense instead of neutral ones

    One of the best quotes in the show: "Kidneys! I've got new kidneys! I don't like the colour." This implies not only does he now have kidney pain, he also knows the colour of his kidneys. Which makes me wonder how much of his internal organs he can see.

    One correction. The Doctor was, at the time, believed to have been born a Shebogan who made it into the Academy. That's revealed in the scene where Clara is in the barn when the Doctor is a child, and two adults are arguing about him, and the male voice says he'll never be a Time Lord or make it into the Academy.

      I disagree. I think Bill's character has a level of inquisitiveness and self-awareness that other companions don't really have. She's very compassionate, fun-loving, and strong-willed. You might not think your opinion is bigoted, but I think there is definitely some underlying racism in your reasoning that I recommend you think about. You have a problem with Bill's sexuality being brought up a lot, but do you have the same issue with characters like Rose and Amy, whose sexualities were literally on average brought up more than Bill's, and travelled with their boyfriends? A major part of series 6's plot is that Amy and Rory literally had sex on board the TARDIS, does that not feel forced to you? I wonder why not...?

    Honestly, (great great great video btw, I love your vids) about the doctor retiring, I don't think you can bring to the table the multiple instances where the Doctor says that couldn't retire. That's the obvious reason why should. Clips from 9th and 11th saying that are shown saying that needs to be occupied, but says that *because of trauma*, can't let themselve to do nothing and be alone with their thoughts. We all know what happens when they do. The Doctor is, until bigeneration, a being that doesn't want to recognize that has to stop, because no one can do what they do. Their words about not wanting to retire are very distorted by personal context. To me, are glaring instances of they needing that healing time in peace, doing stuff, not being alone, but not having life risking situations

    I've been out of the loop with Doctor Who for ten years or so and recently caught up because of all the BS with 15 and 13. Tennant is 'my doctor' but HOLY HELL Capaldi's character is amazing at the end of season 9 and all of season 10!! (Edit: except for the thing where Bill defeated the Monks with thoughts of her mom) I love how he gives the vibes of the 1st and 3rd doctors. I wasnt a fan of 11's run and the writing, and sort of fell off the show at the beginning of series 8 even though I liked Capaldi more than Smith, but the writing was still *rough*. I'm so glad I saw the rest of Capaldi's run because he was absolutely fantastic and I doubt we'll ever have anything like it again ever.

    Capaldi is peak doctor overall, but I think the Late Eccleston/early Tenant era was the best half a season or so. Eccleston would have blown them both out of the water if the BBC wasn't run by the sort of oafish failson that gets promoted at the BBC. Every time Tenant mentions that he just absolutely loves hoo mans I hate him just that much more. A little sad that we'll never get a John Hurt arc, not even a charity special. Glad we got another shot at Doctor Donna.

    I think Season 8 was kind of rough because the post-regeneration craziness went on for a little too long, and he was too much of a jerk. Older Doctors, despite occasional the occasional quirk, generally act their age. I'm just still wondering why. Out of all of the options, why him? It just seems like they took the show at it's peak and did this thing that nobody was too thrilled about, and it was for no good reason.

    The chibnal era as a whole felt like someone almost getting close to a great idea, but then flubbing it with mediocre writing and those ‘very serious moments’ where two characters take a pause from the action to exposition dump their feelings and motivations (that change episode to episode). The era was defined by ‘tell, don’t show.’ It got really frustrating. I missed any amount of nuance and having characters grow and change. Case in point: what was Yaz’s character arc? 3 years in the tardis, and how did she really change as a person?

      Well, like I say in the video, it seems insignificant on the surface, but if you think about it, the Doctor could've just called her "she" the whole time, or used "they", since fundamentally, he is still referring to the same person. But he doesn't, showing how he genuinely considers Missy to be different. You say "no shit", but there is genuinely subtext there that I thought was worth bringing up.

    I think the issue with the series finales really stems from the issue with the story arcs as a whole. For whatever reason, Doctor Who loves dropping constant reminders of a mystery without offering any clues or development until the final two episodes. That much buildup will inevitably lead to disappointment, particularly given how quickly things are resolved relative to the amount of time it takes to get you interested.

    • @amazingdisgrace1684
      @amazingdisgrace1684 Před 3 dny

      Bingo. RTD is particularly bad with that. Looking back, outside of Bad Wolf, which the characters do at least acknowledge (though only right before the finale), the "series arcs" aren't acknowledged at all before the finales. Torchwood and Saxon are probably the worst offenders, as they're literally just there to pop-up or get mentioned every now and again, but that's it. I don't think it's to the series detriment, but it's hardly well done. But then you have S5 and the cracks in time. I think Moffat's first attempt at a "series arc" was actually kind of well done, as it has little developments that play out across the series, we get more little tid-bits of what's actually going on. Except when that happens, it becomes all the weirder that The Doctor isn't more actively investigating. In the Weeping Angel two-parter, he discovers the exact date that the explosion causing the cracks happens. And it's the same day that he took Amy with him. What does he do? Nothing. In the Silurian two-parter, he discovers that whatever caused the explosion, the TARDIS is involved somehow. This is serious. What does he do? _Nothing._
