Why The Toymaker Was A Perfect Villain

  • In Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, the Toymaker returned as the final villain for the 14th Doctor (David Tennant) to face. The episode itself was great, but I personally found the Toymaker to easily be the best aspect of the episode, and so I decided to sorta explain why. And you can watch it if you want.

    I respectfully disagree. The Toymaker has managed to beat people like the Master and "God" in games because they tried to be too clever. The Doctor is fresh off of Wild Blue Yonder and has learnt to "not think". Overthinking is what gets you beaten by the Toymaker. Games like cutting cards and catch are simple. There's no strategy, no mind-games, just play. That's what makes it the perfect choice to defeat someone who is practiced at every game and every strategy. Bring the game down to it's most basic level.

    • @js739
      @js739 Před 5 měsíci +23

      Came here to say this. The card cutting game gave the doctor a 50/50 chance to end it right there and then with no further issues, and his strategy/mindgame was having the fall back of a best of three. The ball game is a simple physical game that he knew the toymaker would be bound to abide by the laws of physics to play, and he had a distinct advantage of it being 2 v 1 (with the doctor already having been shown to be incredibly good at catch/throw with things like the satsuma in ten's first episode and the ball scene in human nature).
      It still feels slightly anti-climactic, especially since we're used to the doc outsmarting foes, but that's cuz we aren't really shown that he is outsmarting the toymaker precisely by not relying on being smart. Its the exact same trick as the episode before, even. Maybe the writing could've lampshaded it more, to make it feel less underwhelming on first view, but in retrospect it makes a lot of sense

      @@js739The big problem here is asking why the Toymaker is satisfied with playing catch and cutting cards, to point of being so deliriously happy that he seemingly loses his reasoning. If I was a villain who had orchestrated a meeting by implanting a meme into the subconscious of an entire race using radio techonology in a plot that spanned over a century, I would be supremely pissed off at playing catch as the pinnacle of revenge against the most unique adversary in the universe. It's like creating the best restaurant in the world and then feeding your most important guests only microwave meals from the supermarket.

      This is preposterous. Your odds of winning a game don't spike dramatically by not thinking, and as a matter of fact if you do this your odds of winning plummet because you didn't try to outsmart your opponent. Strategically minded people don't have a Pokémon-style weakness to people who are not utilizing strategy; that only serves to give them an advantage.

      It reminds me of Jotaro endlessly bluffing when fighting D'Arby. Everyone else tried to beat him by playing the game, while Jotaro never even looked at his cards.
      Challenging the toymaker to some elaborate mental game is something the master would do, and that's why he lost. You can't beat game theory incarnate with game theory and strategy.

    I feel, with regard to your criticism about The Toymaker, it can be attributed to his fatal flaw: He *lives* for the game.
    He has no grand design or philosophy. At his core: The Toymaker is a child, one who wants nothing more than to “have fun”.
    Now, I feel this is all self imposed. When The Toymaker wins the card game, 14 reminds him about the “Universal” rule: Best 2 out of 3. Which The Toymaker accepts as fact.
    I believe this is where his greatest weakness lies: because he’s focused on “the game”, he thinks there are rules that must be enforced.
    I believe that The Toymaker, at any point, could have made his own rules. But the Doctor was smart enough to use The Toymaker’s own nature against him.

    If they were going to bring the Toymaker back they could have at least stuck to the rules of the games and got a decent actor to play him instead of cramming a talentless Disney bangle buster into the mix.The whole franchise should be taken over by people who give a shit about the lore and writing good stories that aren't full of virtue signalling and all other manner of garbage that they think we can't work out for ourselves. Count me out of 2005 mark 2. I just don't get how RTD just doesn't get Dr.Who and he should stick to his shit stabbing soap operas because that is all he's good for. I don't care what excuse he says about giving the job Ncuti Gatwa but it's nothing but infatuation, like he once had for John Barrowman years back and this will be no different.
