Here's a small teaser trailer for a project I'm VFX supervising -
"Scene 38 ReImagined" is about the final confrontation between Ben Kenobi & Darth Vader in "A New Hope" nearly 20 years after the events of "Revenge Of The Sith". This is a one-off story driven scene reflecting the characters in its chronological order from the point of Revenge of the Sith through Rebels, Rogue One, and all canon material leading to A New Hope.

I love Vader's uppercut swing and the angry, ferocious way he's fighting. You can absolutely convey strong emotion even while wearing a mask and sometimes without uttering a single word. You guys nailed it here.

Agreed. The upward slashes are very consistent with what you see Vader do in ESB and ROTJ. Once in that suit, Vader had to adopt a different style than he had previously. The new style was based upon keeping an opponent at a distance and dominating with overwhelming strength. It was fueled by rage.
This worked for Vader until he was faced with a young Jedi (Luke in ROTJ) who was unafraid to get in close with him. During the first few parries of the ROTJ fight, Luke neutralizes Vader's style by getting in close and binding his saber to his upper body. Then, when he decides that he's had enough, he kicks Vader down the stairs. Later in that fight, you see Luke taking on Vader's ESB tactics (like in this excellent video) where he overwhelms and pushes the opponent back. In the novelization, Luke actually forces Vader to hit his head on the overhang before backing him onto the bridge. You could say that the style is very "Skywalker"...
You forgot to add that Vader was majorly conflicted in the ROTJ and didn’t really want to kill Luke at all. Luke even turned the taunt up on Vader “I can feel the good in you, the conflict...” Never when fighting Luke, in either ESB or ROTJ did Vader go all out. Well, maybe in ESB when Luke’s lightsaber glanced Vader’s shoulder and he got pissed off. The fight kind of ended immediately after haha.
Vader was conflicted up until the point where he was knocked down the staircase. At that point he realizes that he is outclassed in speed, and strength. When he walks back up the stairs, he is visibly shaken and enraged. Watch Vader's body language as he walks up the stairs. From this point until he is beaten down and dismembered, he is doing everything he can to defeat Luke. His inner conflict resumes when Luke refuses to kill him, and resolves when he saves Luke. What Luke does, in not killing Vader, is to demonstrate a commitment to his Jedi ethics that literally shames Vader into rethinking his situation.
I frankly think that the ROTJ duel is the very best in terms of emotional content. It's the biggest father-son-issues fight in all of cinema.
I love this video too :D Vaders character comes out perfectly, which is pretty awesome when you think about it, they don't even say something. But I also think, at the same time, that because of this there is a problem with Obi Wan. He looks like he's in fear, Vader completely overpowering him. That didn't really happen, I think it would've been even better when Obi Wan would parry Vaders aggressive hit with less problems :D

Olli Konttinen thats true also george lucas said himself that he wasnt sure what direction he wanted to go with swordfighting in starwars at that time yet. In that fight he treated it as more of a sacred style of fighting that wasnt anything over the top or athletic. once they got to empire tho they established lightsaber duels as a very active and emergetic style of fighting

I got chills watching this. Wow . You can just FEEL Vader's anger in his moves. He's keeping the saber close to his power zone so his swings hit harder. And how Obi Wan doing the best he can to hold them off but the difference in strength and stamina are apparent. SO well done.

Obi wan's lightsaber fighting style is like the only one that can hold up against Darth Vader
but... was Vader on top of the things? I feel like old Ben had the high ground all the time... he was the one distracting Vader from Luke, he pokes around it is no longer a situation where the master needs to finish his apprentice, the master is playing his apprentice... when I saw the fight between Ben and Maul on rebels I saw something, he makes maul think something... he assumes QGJ form IV and kinda leads Maul into trying the exact same trick he used to kill QG both obi wan and vader lived and re-lived their fight... Vader is stronger but... to me Old Ben was on top

Well to be honest, the prequels are what Lucas has said is his "true" vision of SW and we all know how they those ended up. Even the special edition of the originals he tinkered with had some goofy additions (Vader yelling NOOO when he defended Luke against Palpatine totally ruined that scene and made it silly as hell). I think Lucas has a great vision in terms of creating an overall world and story but isn't very good at handling details or filming in general. The best SW films were the ones where someone else directed and were good at the details of filming and putting a story together.
He's the guy who can create characters, worlds, design an overall story, and generally be in the background. He's not very good behind the camera and controlling an entire film production. A New Hope was good but ironically, I think the lack of tech actually helped make that film and the originals what they were. Lucas had all the money and tech he wanted with the prequels but they still failed, due largely in part to Lucas himself with bad writing and direction.

True Star Wars Fan I don't really count it as hate, it's just the truth. The prequels are very badly made films whether you like them or not. Poor acting, directing, writing etc. There are some good stuff in them but are extremely over weighed by the bad stuff.

The anger in Vader's swings, the desperation in Obi Wan's Parry. The tone. All it needs is duel of the fates and you've landed everything spot on.

Absolutely!
Unlike Maul, Vader actually has really good defense. Not to mention Vader is physically strong enough to rip someone's arm from their socket, he puts all of that strength into all of those swings rather quickly.
Maul and Windu are overrated because of people who peddle that Vs Series shit. Besting a guy like Palpatine in a sword fight, who's known to despise saber combat in the first place, is nothing to brag about when a guy superior in the Order and canonically in combat (Yoda) stalemated the same guy says little to the person's overall prowess. The Emperor's fight with Windu was a sword fight, his fight with Yoda was a match of the force. Unlike Windu, Maul is neither a top shelf contender of The Force nor of Saber Combat. Obi-Wan's Force Power was only a bit weaker than Widu's due to its lack of adaptability but his swordsmanship was on-par if not superior due to how specialized he was. Vader is the greatest Djem-So practitioner *EVER* (as his offence became more refined than from before the dismemberment) in Star Wars and is adept at the defensive style of Soresu due to his time training under Obi-Wan. Even at his physical Prime, Obi-Wan would be overwhelmed by Darth Vader's Djem-So offence and would be powerless to respond due to Vader's flush defense when fighting seriously. Even Windu would be outmatched by Vader as Vader's calmness wouldn't feed Windu's source of advantage. His defense is only as sound as Vader's and his offence isn't as lethal. It's only when feeding off of someone's Dark Side power, which was Palpa-Appletine's bread and butter (and not Saber combat, canonically) that he was at his strongest.

You can see in this video that the creator did their homework. Both Vader and Obi Wan are using their preferred forms of lightsaber combat. Obi Wan is using Soresu to defend himself from Vader's powerful and deadly Djem So strikes.

This is so amazing! In hindsight it’s easier to see that this was the level of aggression, anger and desperation that needed to be present during this fight, but perhaps at the time the fight we got was sufficient for the story being told. That being said this makes the reunion of master and apprentice after so long a much more emotional battle.

Tears in my eyes watching this. After years of their confrontation, Vader's built up rage and anger is clearly released in an all out 'seeing red' fashion. Absolutely amazing how a man who bascially has a blank face can be conveyed with such strong emotion in just a fight scene. Amazing work guys.

Both actors really embody Obi-Wan's and Vader's styles here. Obi-Wan has that strong, perfect defense, and Vader is out for blood in an all out rage. Definitely looking forward to the final scene

It's about time someone remade this scene. After Revenge of the Sith came out, the original scene does not hold. It doesn't have the emotion a 20 year later rematch should have.
This remade scene is awesome. Vader's fight style has transformed to all out power and rage and this remade scene captures it perfectly. The slower and less acrobatic action compared to the first Obi Wan vs Vader fight is totally believable now.

technically this must be most emotional duel. Vader was waiting for this moment for almost 20 years. While Kenobi has his wisdom and ultimate knowledge, Vader's lust for revenge allows him to channel the Dark Force as much as he wants/needs to. Ben maybe right, but he can't dodge raging sith. must be epic as fuck, tho unfortunately Vader would never be able share his pain with Kenobi...

It's better than anything the old era could give us as well. The old fights we're slow and pretty uninteresting, while the prequal fights are mostly fast and heartless. I'd say the new trilogy is handling lightsabers the best, because they're the most realistic. Like how this one feels.

In such a short amount of footage shown, you've really captured the emotion, power and anger in every swing from Vader, and the defensive spur and wit from obi-wan. I can't wait to see the full scene and am very glad to have come across this channel. :)

Darth Vader's offensive attacks in this video are actually pretty scary, knowing that in both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi he was holding back, as he knew he was fighting his son. That means that besides maybe Rogue One, we haven't seen much of his full lightsaber dueling potential.

The problem was that CGI did not exist back in the 70's, Star Wars had a very low budget so they could not hire stunts and also the sticks used as lightsabers were very fragile and expensive so the actors had to be extra careful when making that scene.
