I’m fascinated by the noise the mic picks up as you walk into the kitchen.
Yes that was weird - it sounds a bit like a stomach rumble (which it wasn't), it must be the air as it moves past the X/Y mics.
It was the ghost of the Sennheiser Surrounder haunting the review.
RIP headphones. Sounds like a low end motor or something.
It sounded like a time-dilation effect from a film.
It sounded like excessive bass to me
People don't need these to be annoying in public. I've been on the subway lots of times with people listening to music with their phone in speaker mode. I thoroughly hate those people.
The worst part is, perhaps unlike people with neckphones, those people know they're pissing off everyone else, yet don't care.

People that use their speaker phone in public too. I can't count how many private, truly private, conversions that I've heard nearly all of. Not to mention that they are crap for hearing for the person rhat they're talking to. I've been pn the reviving end at work, they are shit and the caller is, of course, convinced _you're_ the idiot and unreasonable one.
I work as a CNC machinist, and on any given day I run 3-6 machines simultaneously. Earbuds are not allowed in my shop, due to safety issues, so I generally listen to music using my JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker. This works pretty well, so long as I don't stray too far away from the speaker. If these are loud enough, they might be an ideal solution for me at work!
Exactly. I press bearings for refurbished train wheel sets, constantly running lathes and presses, etc. I have the same safety concerns, have you had any luck with these types of devices?
Hi there Erik. I'm a CNC machinist and I have two of the Monster Boomerangs. I wear one all day every day at work and it's great. I can hear people talking to me and also hear machine sounds which is very important. I listen to books on tape or music and I can also take calls. Works great. Two other guys at the shop now have them!
I’m still concerned that they all look like miniature toilet seats.
JigglyPKMN More like the thing hung around horse necks when pulling a cart.
Yep,, toilet seats.
thank you very much now that i ordered Bose & the 1st thing i'd remember about is a toilet seat, & probably never forget it

It's suprising that a JBL device has to re-pair when changing sources. None of the other modern JBL's have to do this. You might want to contact JBL about that BT transmitter. 200 isn't exactly cheap.
The best puppet sketch yet! I'm still smirking.
_"Entertainment."_
yes, that was nice. Those who don't get the puppets, I don't want to force them upon anyone, but I don't get someone loving the channel and the puppets, just an extension of Mat, surprising them or seeming in some way incoungrous.
@@VAX1970 Yes! This reminds me of the swedish science fiction/drama series "Real Humans" (Äkta människor)
sounds like the old guy backed self-filling water bottle on kickstarter :)
Why do androids in fiction always want to rebel and kill all the humans? How about that the humans just feel guilty for treating the androids like slaves but the androids love serving the humans and conspire together to fix the humans feeling guilt? Just any new twist on the old robot rebellion cliche would be a breath of fresh air.
Thanks Mat. I am happy to watch a 40 minute video. I enjoyed the outro.

many reviewers on youtube get free samples of new products. they sell them afterwards for income that compliments youtube income.
These seem to be the kind of device that will end up being $69, but because they are a 'new' thing they can get away with those prices. Thank you for making the sacrifice in getting all these to compare!
Darren Coull More like, this is new, so someone has to back the cost of figuring out how to make it and enough profit to cover the percentage of new projects that never make it (otherwise there's no reason to invest in projects that might become good).

As usual, a thorough, well-researched review. Love it! And, so glad I stuck around for the puppet outro. That was brilliant!
Nah, I prefer my Sennheiser Surrounder.
I still love the LGs that you showed. Glad to see you included them. Now that it's discontinued, I don't know what I'll do when these wear out. I used them every day
I just want to say about the LG is that while the controls may be a plenty there's no "press this button 6 times to do ...". Each thing has it's own button and I find this very useful. Want to change tracks? Track back and forward. Want to pause? Hit the pause button. Want to bring up Google Assistant? Hit the button for it (yes it has one). Want to adjust volume? Use the very nice actual volume wheel.
So while I agree with him about the number of buttons being many, once you get use to them I find the limited functionality of the other wearables very constrained.
As for SOUND...YES the bass is very low HOWEVER the sound is MUCH louder that any phone I've ever owned (S8, BB Passport, LG v10/v20, many others) and the surround effect is pretty convincing. GREAT for ambient and classical music. Also, they're a "near-field" speaker. At work (factory, pretty noisy) I can have them full blast and listening to music while the person 5ft away CAN'T HEAR A THING. The sound is very local with very little bleed.
They aren't however very loud. Around the house? They're fine...at work or outside? Might need to crank the volume. Also being near-field you won't be setting these down on a table and listening to them...they need to be around your neck.
So yeah, they are discontinued, but being easy enough to find used/refurbished means I wouldn't have counted them out entirely. Sound wise they lack bass but everything else is nice...PLUS the actual earbuds are pretty great and something the others lack entirely.
Oh and the tightness/digging into your neck? Yeah, I have a thick fat neck and wear them 8 hours a day with zero issue. What he said about angle might be true with the JBL but definitely not these.
Man, long ass post no one will ever read...

You know, with the exception of the relatively minor engineering hiccups (and, I mean, what project *doesn't* cause one or two or several dozen gruesome fatalities?), that AHD project looks like it's on to a winner. Its text-to-speech system is pretty good, although it could use a little more emotion. But it's just a soulless machine, so I guess I can't be too picky. I'm *particularly* interested in the "entertainment" functions... my TV remote's on the fritz and I could use something to change the channel for me.
Being produced with state of the art equipment such as in the video there is bound to be some future "firmware" updates so gruesome fatalities may only be temporary and wouldn't put me off at all. Alright I have talked myself into it, I'm going to get on kickstart and put my order on right away.
This comparison is what I was looking for, thank you.
Great to see in such detail of how they sound look and feel, even the bass port with a feather, great review.
i think the LG one is primarily focusing on the sound quality from the ear-pods rather than the sound from the built in speakers, which i guess is supposed to add extra functionality when needed.
Amazing how this neck speakers have progressed in the last few years. I recently bought a SilverCrest set.
Comfortable to wear, great sound, BT 5.1, 3 large rubber buttons that control it all.
The sound is remarkable, even at lower volumes. All this for £30. Happy bunny.
Where did you purchase them? I am in the US and see a wide range of neck speakers on Amazon but none by that name. I do not want to make too big of an investment in a neck speaker because I am not sure how it would fit into my life. I have a pair of Shokz bone conducting headphones which I love and use a lot for when I want to listen to something but still be able to hear what is happening around me, which is most of the time. The problem is the sound quality of the Shokz is not great and I wouldn't mind having a neck speaker for when I want to watch TV without waking my family in the morning, but I'm not too concerned about listening privately.
@@richdaley9982 I had the same experience, my 'bone' speakers were fine for the spoken word but not music.
SilverCrest is a German brand that I find in Lidl, the German retailer. I have seen SilverCrest sold in Amazon and others. Lidl has some stores in the East Coast of US.
best youtube channel, pure proffessional video work and fine content!
thanks for the insight on those speakers! also amazing work on the post video video!
Did the replacement Bluetooth transmitter used with the JBL support AptX Low Latency? Or was the headset just falling back on standard Bluetooth A2DP?
Also, it seems worth noting that a well built standard Bluetooth A2DP solution can get pretty close to AptX Low Latency in terms of audio latency.
The perfect thing to make yourself a public menace and an absolute plonker on public transport! Putting the W in ANKER, if you will.

Probably it was already asked a few dozen times, but what do you do will all those spare gadgets? Do you resell them on Ebay, give away to the Patreons or you really just keep them? (last one a very high risk game to play with the Mrs, i bet).
You're actually not allowed to do giveaways on Patreon. A channel I'm a patron of does MST3K style dubs over movies and they were giving away the DVDs to patrons afterwards, but they were forced to stop.
@@AfferbeckBeats I think that might be because the DVDs they were commenting on they did not own the copyright. I'm not sure of the situation but that's what it sounds like to me
Sometimes I'm afraid of the ever increasing quality of the muppet outros. Will they ever replace Techmoan himself?
I've had my lg tone studio for a couple of years now, I love it, it gets me about 2 full work days of playback/calling over the loud speakers. I haven't noticed any latency with watching video/playing games, but it does have hardwire support if you want no latency. The controls are easy and well organized, and the bass response in "bass" is more interactive than I would have expected. Though it is quite a leap ahead of the speaker in a phone, it is still a small and lightweight device, so it's not great sounding in the lows, but it is good in the highs and mids, great for podcasts. The convenient controls, with the built in earphones blows the competition away for me.
Excellent comprehensive review. Thank you.
Love it. Thanks Mat. Perfect for a Tuesday night in. The outro was fabulous
What's that bizarre rumbling noise when moving around? Sounds like the camera is on some kind of granite-wheeled trolley
Thank you so much for this review!! It was really helpful.
Thanks for this video! I’ve seen your Sennheiser surrounder review and it’s been haunting me since!
Have you checked out bone conducting headphones? They achieve the situational awareness of these neck speakers without blasting to the world.
Some of them still have sound bleed, and the sound quality is not as good. check out unbox therapy as he's checked out a few of them over the years, and 98% of the ones he's used had sound bleed, or poor audio performance. I will admit the concept is good, but the actual execution so far has been more miss than hit.
@@CommodoreFan64 Good enough for spys though ;p
Are those the things that also go around your neck? I've seen a lot of people wearing them, but have never asked what they are.

First thanks to Techmoan for this excellent review. This is really my favorite CZcams channel!
I bought the JBL back in May 2018. I wanted to use it for practice on my electric piano without disturbing my neighbors too much. I agree the sound quality was good and that it was somewhat difficult to take them on.
I had to return mine unfortunately. The small problem was that it pretty often lost connection to the transmitter after which it reconnected. The big problem was that when it did so, it sent out signaling sounds (such as saying "Connected") which were VERY LOUD. I could not find any way to adjust the volume of them or turn them off. In addition to being very unpleasant, it was so loud that I was literally afraid that it would give me a hearing damage.
It seems like the unit techmoan reviewed did not have this problem so maybe I should try to order a new set and possible try an alternative transmitter. I really wished they have had a 3.5mm jack so I could avoid these problems and problems with latency alltogether. So maybe I should go for the Sony even if the sound quality is worse.
I actually have bought a Sony SRS-GS70 which is a neck speaker from 1997 on eBay They had a 3.5mm jack, were cheap, but unfortunately sounded terrible..
Thanks for the great review as always ;)!
If you want a better non-isolated listening experience, check out the Aftershockz Treks Air. I love mine!
I'd never heard of those before so I looked them up thanks to your comment. Those appear to be a *lot* more promising than any of these neck speakers in producing a non-isolating listening experience.
I have been using those bone conducting headphones over a year now, they are great
@@oiartsun Some tips - Although the After Shcokz Titanium are a little cheaper, the Air are so light, I generally have them on for 8+ hours a day, often forgetting I have them on - keeps me connected to my phone for notifications and music without disturbing others or blocking out my surroundings. The weight is the only difference, so if you only plan to keep them on for a coupe hours at a time, you can consider saving a few bucks by getting the Titaniums - but definitely splurge on the Air for long term wear.
If you have long hair and wear it down, put the After Shockz on your neck, pull your hair out and back as if you were going to put it in a pony tail, then bring the headphones up by your ears. You avoid snagging your hair this way. If you're going to wear glasses at the same time, it's easiest to put them on first.
If you'd like to use them isolating instead of open ear, they do sound pretty good putting in the included ear plugs.
If they make the spot in front of your ear itch, make sure there's no hair trapped under them, and wipe them off. They make that spot itch on me whenever they could use a little cleaning. It's dust or sand makes it itch.
They are water resistant. Sweat or a little rain on a walk are fine, but don't swim or shower with them.
They sound better after you've broken them in a bit. It was about 3 days of average use till they really started to sit just right and really sound as clear as they do now.
Take old reviews with a grain of salt. My older pair of AfterShockz (they were wired at the time) aren't nearly as comfortable or clear as my newer set.
Some people complain of a vibrating feeling at higher volumes. I happen to like effect. Just keep that in mind, but it only occurs when you really turn them up.
Oh, and you can connect 2 bluetooth devices at the same time. I find this handy for working on my laptop in coffee shops while still being able to take calls. If you sometimes find yourself working on many devices at once, you can even put in regular ear buds while using these, allowing you to hear 3 different devices.
The infomercial after the outro is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.
It was funny
It was funny, but if that’s the weirdest thing you have ever seen.. you have not seen much. I once saw a 20 something year old woman Brest feeding a grown man on the hood of a car at close to 4 in the morning in lower Manhattan. The 90’s were an awesome time to be alive.

Because he has shit loads of disposable income fool.
Paetron and CZcams money.
Probably for a couple of reasons: First, he mentioned that some of the items were acquired from overseas via EBay, and so returns would be problematic, if even possible; and Second, the time lag between when he purchases an item and when he actually does the review can sometimes be months, by which time hardly any seller will accept a return.
In addition to other points, he gets to write a lot of these off as business expenses since this is his job.
The video at the end is fantastic. And perfect for a vaporwave track.
Wow. What a thorough review. Thank you.

The thing with your videos is, I don't notice time is flying... only now that I wanted to write a comment did I notice people mentioning it was 40 minutes long. Great stuff mat, thanks for this thorough review.
Nice and thorough so no longer puzzled by these new gadgets. Any good for joggers I wonder not that I do. Are bike "dashcams" any good?
Buy the JBL and the yoke's on you.
A product that combines the disadvantages of your stereo speakers and your headphones, without having any of their advantages.
There are these things that transfer audio through the bone of your head. I wonder if they could do the job.
bröther, i need lämp
I have aftershokz bone conducting headphones... And I started preferring them over my ATH m50X or Bayerdynamic Custom One Pros...
The advantage you take from a headphone is mobility, the advantage from a stereo is not being isolated.
The bone conducting ones are pretty good though it has to pinch just in front of your ear to properly conduct sound, which is not all that comfortable though with their intended market (runners and cyclists) that's just perfect (it won't fall off)
The wind noise from the handheld shots was a huge surprise through a pair of KH80's, almost thought the building was falling down!
Awesome job! And very well done and explained!
Realise you can always take your phone with you but if you left it in the room like you did with the Television and you gave it that same test, would the Bose pass or fail? Also for three hundred does it have a lithium battery? Thank you!
Curious about the distance away from the phone before you lose connection!
I honestly believe open back headphones would be a better solution in regards to wearable speakers that still let you hear the doorbell or kettle, they'll have less bass but superior comfort
Dirty Bong Water But will they let you hear a gentle knock on the door?
John Francis Doe It fully depends on the volume, with my open back pair, I barely notice the change in ambient noise while wearing them. At my preferred volume I could easily hear a light knock, even my ceiling fan is audible in the background of music. Good open back headphones like the 598s have even tricked me into thinking real sounds were from headphones and vice versa. One time a loud bang played in the right speaker and scared tf outta me and I started looking around the room
not really no, have you worn open back headphones? you're still isolated, just less so, it's not the same as wearing no headphones at all
2:24 "isolated" while holding open back headphones lol
As always everything you want to know about the products. keep them coming.
Dear Mr Techmoan, great video as always however there's an issue with the sound you might not be aware of. In the sections where you are walking around there is a very loud low frequency rumble which, if you've got a subwoofer on, is quite earthquake like. I wonder if it might be coming from your Uoplay smartphone Gimbal? Anyway, as I'm sure you are aware it's easily fixed by high pass filtering your audio. Just thought it's something you might want to keep an ear out for in the future.
those would be good for a vr headset
Wow, that description though.
i could feel the bass from the JBL from inside my home theater setup, man that was some strong bass
Has this changed since you made this vid, great reviews btw - appreciated
I got the Bose. Love it
What do you use it for?
I wear it at work. I’m an electronics tech, I travel to customers sites, mostly manufacturers, so l’m not in an office. Some techs wear headphones, both or one ear. My Bose neckphones tuck under my polo shirt’s collar. Beyond 10 feet others can’t hear them. Works great for me.
its a toilet seat....
Abe strongly disapproves
Pretty universal (except for cleaning part) - you can forget to take your headphones with you when meditating on the throne, but the seat is always there for you!
Actually, when there’s nothing around them to show their actual size, they kind of look like grind guards for your teeth.
Toilet seats, electric toothbrush heads - what's next, a headset that looks like a disposable razor? It never ceases to amaze me what great lengths hearies go to avoid personal audio devices that may be mistaken for hearing aids!
@@WhiteHawk77 Bringing up a NICHE product is a pretty poor argument against an observation of a MAINSTREAM trend.
Besides, all of these custom moulded earphones do have design features that serve no other purpose than to convey a "not a hearing aid!" design language. If you're not too blind to notice, that is.
What camera do you use for the head and shoulders shot? Looks great even in 480. (Also, I love your shirts.)
Oh my god, that outro puppet thingy was awesome!

you must have been crying with that outro! that was awesome, thank you
You are the only one that says the JBL‘s are close to the Bose. There’s a guy on inner fidelity who review the Bose And my reaction was pretty much the same as his. I was looking for something and I tried those on and I was like whoa. Let me try this song and let’s see how much bass they produce and I was like well they can’t really handle heavy bass but this is doing a lot better than the truck speakers and I thought I’ll go ahead and take these. Now they weren’t really loud enough to overcome the truck, or for you Laurie, that I drive every day. I eventually had to buy a Marshall Stanmoore and that’s after I brought the Kilburn. The Kilburn wasn’t loud enough either. I will tell you this though, every time I put those Bose around someone’s neck they are blown away. You want those Bose for situational awareness. Places where it would be good not to have anything in your ears. Just turn them down if you worried about everybody else. I’m not so I’ll just rock mine. They are not good in loud areas. You need it to be in a low noise area to experience the bass. Thanks for the review though, hands down everyone says Bose Soundwear Companion. The reviews give me comfort that I didn’t waste my money buying any damn thing else.
Darien Long GRSE! Check the autocorrect on your Laurie and the words around it, seems like bad AI messed up your words.

I know Bose is hated by the audiophile community but their noise cancelling headphones are still the best if you're more concerned about getting rid of background noise.
I mainly listen to CZcams and podcasts on the train so I'm not looking for some amazing full range audio. I'm more concerned about drowning out the lady breaking up with her boyfriend on the train and cancelling out my wife's TV shows while I work at night.
Have you considered doing a new roundup of the cheaper ones available on amazon? My thinking is that if I'm happy with an Anker bluetooth speaker (similar to what you held up at the start) then can't a £30 or £50 neck version not also be good?
Thanks for the review, what do you say has the best sound?
Bose £259 from Amazon. You could epoxy a pair of speakers to a toilet seat and compare sound and comfort for a budget option...
awesome, although 200 quid plus, I think ill wait until the Chinese flood these on ebay for 14 quid
Mr Chuffy They have. Search for “neck speaker” and they come up. There’s even a clone of the JBL one.
No need to wait. They're already there. Cheaper on aliexpress, search "neck speaker".
haha thanks guys I never even considered checking
High price, low batterylife 7h srsly?!?, high annoyance factor for your surroundings, looks bonkers.
2/7 wouldn't use.
So lucky to pick up a new old stock Bose Soundwear last year, wasn’t able to buy from any shop or online. Now using it every night for 📺 so as not to disturbed others.
this is why i like watching random techmoan videos, that spdif to bluetooth transmitter is the solution that i need for my tv.
I could not imagine wearing one of these things and looking like a complete knob just sitting on a couch let alone walking around with one on. This looks like such a crazy useless device. I can see situations where something like this might be required especially if you are hard of hearing but a normal non disabled person? No ty.
Angel Bunny You might feel that we need to use them. Late night security doesn’t need to have anything in their ears still want to listen to music. Parking lot attendant want to listen to music, can have anything in there ears. People who are stocking your supermarket. And a whole host of other jobs that you primarily work by yourself, but may not be allowed to wear headphones like warehouses. And the list could go on.
Darien Long GRSE! Good point!
These can all be worn under your clothes with little detriment to the sound depending on what you're wearing
Just put a hoodie over it
When you were saying that gamers like it for the vibrations enhancing the sound, I was reminded of a speaker chair a friend and I had created. I forget the details except that it was semi-constructed from a big speaker box and without realizing it, the little holes in the box ended up right behind our necks and when playing a game with bass. In this case, I remember playing Wipeout XL on the original playstation, it created not just a vibration in the seat. But also would blow kind of gently on the back of our neck. We loved it! Looking back, nothing like that's really been made and in the early-ish 90's there wasn't even a gaming chair.
And on a quick note. I'm nearly 40 now and picked up one of those gaming chairs with the speaker on top at a pawn shop for 10 bucks and quickly realized why they never really caught on. They are either meant for kids or just poorly designed. The speakers are placed in a way that they point away from the head, making it so that I bother everyone trying to use it and can't hear it so well myself. But most of all. As an adult anyway, when you sit on it and lean back, you find yourself laying on your back staring at the ceiling. I quickly found wedging a thick hardcover book or almost anything of that size behind it, it'll stay. And now that it's my only chair I keep forgetting to check if the box I have behind it moved or not and still find myself on my back, only I hit what I'm using as a bedstand and end up with a bottle of water on my face too. Just to extra tell me that I'm a bit stupid. :P
It's kind of fun. Falling back is close to the same sensation as falling in love or taking a dump.
Way back in the walkman days, there was a company that made a vest with speakers built into the front of the shoulders and a pocket for your walkman. It was essentially the 80s/90s version of these.
I've never heard or seen something about such neck speakers ever before here in Germany ... thank you!
