Toyota Kluger vs Kia Sorento 2022 seven-seater SUV comparison review: Which is the best family SUV?

  • The Toyota Kluger is the ubiquitous choice of family SUV customers - it has seven seats, it comes with a hybrid powertrain now, and it has Toyota's legendary reliability.
But the Kia Sorento seven-seater SUV is here to challenge it. This smarter, sharper and - dare we say it - sexier new model is packed with equipment and undercuts its rival on prices, while boasting impressive and at times even better levels of equipment. And if diesel is important to you, it's a cracker of a engine in the Kia.
We've assembled a comparison review of these two SUVs based on our existing coverage of the 2022 Toyota Kluger and the 2022 Kia Sorento, and this should help you make your decision over which is the right crossover SUV for you?

Kluger infotainment system: (1:16) it's not just small at 8", it's also low-res and the menu system (software) is abysmal. One option I was looking for was buried five levels deep. There's also confusion about where to find config options: are they in the infotainment system or the digital part of the instrument cluster. Toyota have really dropped the ball in this area.

It's also quieter and rides better over poor roads. And the heads-up display is great. But I largely agree with you. The 2021 US version (Highlander) is significantly better in so many ways, but Toyota based the Aussie version on the 2019 Highlander.

I just jumped on the Big T's website to do the build configurator. They can't confirm the price, let alone any vague idea when you would get one. Warnings all over the site proclaiming that they can't deliver. And the interior is very low rent compared to the Kia. Toyota has become a very arrogant company and their prices are out of control for what are average cars. $90K for the top of the range Hybrid? They must be dreaming. Kia every time for me.

(9:10) Under 9L/100km for the V6? No way Jose. Might get that low if you're pussy-footing along at 100kph between Hay and Mildura, but not for a combined cycle. The tone of your voice suggested you're sceptical also.

(9:20) I'm getting increasingly distrustful about these fuel consumption figures being reported by you and your colleagues. I know SOME manufactures MIGHT play loose with the truth, but you also got 5.6L/100km for the combined cycle. First up, the Toyota hybrids get about the same consumption for city, suburban and country trips. I've had my Kluger hybrid for 1,500km now, and for careful suburban driving (The Hills LGA), at most one pax, economy mode. aircon at 23°C, I'm getting 7.7L/100km. With the cold, wet weather you experienced for your testing I expect you used aircon also. So, what are you doing to get a whopping 27% better fuel consumption than me?

      Hi Greg
Mines the grande, it’s also the heaviest of the other two grades. I’ve traveled roughly 4400km. I’m currently on 5.4km. I have to admit I drive very conservatively. I don’t rush to the red lights , i slow down early so the battery can recharge . I too drive it in eco. But will only switch the Air con if I really need it. Its more of a luxury than a necessity to me. Aircon in eco mode will reduce the engines economy by 20%! Maybe drive it in normal mode if you plan to use the aircon more frequently.
      Best regards
      Andrew

@@andrewangelodemou2681 Thanks for you're information. We mostly use Costco 98 premium also, and we have the Grande Hybrid too. Coincidences! If we can't get to Costco then we use 95 Premium. (Costco Marsden Park don't sell 95 but their 98 is cheaper than 95 elsewhere.)
Most of the 1,300km we've driven have been suburban in light traffic. From 1st November we're looking forward to travelling outside Greater Sydney, so will be able to get some motorway consumption figures. I'll let you know the results.
