Only after that did I hear other songs such as Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day, and other songs from their first 3 albums before The Unforgettable Fire. U2 is alternative rock, new wave, post-punk. Much like Inxs, The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, etc. They were hard to classify, but fall under those umbrellas. Dance rock type of music. These groups have been for along time. '90s, '90s and '00s. Modern groups like Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Bloc Party, The Verve, etc too.
    As for ballads. It can be from any type of musical genre. R&B, rap, rock, hard rock/metal, soft rock, folk rock, , punk, new wave, alternative/indie, country, freestyle music, pop, etc. It just a slower emotional (mainly love, interpersonal, introspective,, etc ) songs.

  • @lttlejordan23
    @lttlejordan23 Před rokem +10

    "With or Without You" is such a good song. One of U2's best! But it's really not a ballad. At its heart is in-fact about a romantic relationship, but it has turned sour and the subject is at odds with what to do or how to proceed. They can't live with the relationship, but also can't live without it. Much deeper when you truly dive into the lyrics. "See the stone set in your eyes, see the thorn twist in your side", "Sleight of hand and twist of fate, on a bed of nails she makes me wait" and "Through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all but I want more". Ballads are more about the love and getting it back, not fighting it. So it's essentially just an emotionally poised song. That said, the entire Joshua Tree album is excellent. Along with this song, there is also "Where the Streets Have No Names" and "I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For" (personal favorite) They are also incredible live.

    Cannot believe there is anyone who hasn’t heard this song. The album Joshua Tree was 1987 Grammy Album of the Year. They beat Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Prince that year. Any song on that album is stunning. Although they are a rock band, it’s not traditional 80s hard rock. But they started a theme of putting meaning back into rock songs. Not just sex, drugs and R&R. They were also very active in finding peace in Ireland. So their fame was not just music but activism as well. Still today.

    The thing about U2 is their style has gone through more than a few different transformations over the years. Heck, when they first started out they were almost a punk band. This particular album came out in the late 80's (around 87 or so if memory serves correctly) and it was arguably their first solid commercial success and the album that really exploded them into the public consciousness.

Their album "The Unforgettable Fire" scored a hit with "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and the album itself was solid ... just beautiful. The band was obviously hitting their stride. Their next album, "The Joshua Tree" - where this song is from - was one of those phenomenal hit albums where song after song gets radio play. With this album, U2 became a top band overnight. Joshua Tree included "With or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "In God's Country," "Bullet the Blue Sky," and other great album songs like "One Tree Hill," "Red Hill Mining Town," "Running to Stand Still." The guitar style of the band (using delay) became iconic ... practically a musical style of its own. It became so popular, I'm not sure modern audiences will hear this music as being as impactful as it was back then.

    This album was produced by the musical genius Brian Eno. Such an incredible matchup U2 under the direction of the master.

      Eno and Daniel Lanois. The album has a lot of Lanois' signature style.

    "Where The Streets Have No Name" is a good one. U2 has really great hits and they are an iconic band. This was a good one, heard it quite a lot. This is a perfect song to slow dance to. For an earlier hit, check out "Gloria."

    The beauty of U2 is their diversity and passion. Bono says every U2 song is a gospel song. This one means multiple things, his relationship with his faith and Jesus, and also his amazing beautiful wife whom he met and started dating the same week the band formed when they were kids in school. He and Ali are soulmates, still married, still in love.. he says she saved his life. It's a beautiful love story and in his memoir Surrender he talks about this song in relation to his relationship with Ali. He has written a couple songs for her; The Sweetest Thing and All I Want Is You. All I Want Is You ... Live at Slane Castle is a must watch. It's beautiful and so powerful. Always PASSIONATE, Bono gives you his entire soul when he sings live. Love them so much. Special band who have changed the world with their music quite literally. I hope you dig deeper and discover the magic of U2.

    First time hearing this? Joshua Tree is one of the all time great albums of rock n' roll. I love Red Hill Mining Town, and One Tree Hill.

    Of course we are right! Us old timers are the teachers here while Amber, you are the students as opposed to real life when you are the teacher. A brilliant legendary tune amongst many more. Don’t bother classifying greatness just enjoy it!😊The difference between U2 and other bands is there emotion and rhythmical playing!

    This is one of my favorites ❤ from 1987! But then, U2 is one of my favorite groups!!! They are awesome in concert! Their sound has evolved throughout the decades. That's the thing about iconic bands - they don't have just one sound! Keep listening, Jay!!!

    This was U2's first US # 1 hit. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks beginning May 16th 1987. They had one more US # 1 hit with I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For which topped the Hot 100 chart for two weeks beginning August 8th 1987. Both songs are from their Jousha Tree album which won the Album of the Year Grammy award and sold over 25 million copies worldwide. U2 is the only Irish group to top the Hot 100 chart.
