The song often went through a mixed interpretation, but Bono has confirmed that the song is about his struggle to reconcile his responsibilities as a married man & a musician on the road. He can't let go of it and can't go on with it, hence "I can't live with or without you" ... great reaction guys, glad you got around to doing U2

I’m an avid U2 fan. I am also a musician myself and play guitar. The edge although a lot of the parts are not technically difficult to play it is close to impossible to sound like him. His parts have always been perfectly crafted for the song, rather than just trying to show off with some crazy solo. He can play pretty good now with all the years that they have been playing together. But his creative ability is off the charts. He also writes a lot of the songs as well with Bono. The edge has created a complete new approach, and sound to a rock band. If you listen to the bands at live aid, they all have the similar structure where the guitarist will do his little solo. But then you have U2 come on, and the guitar is completely different sounding plus it plays to the song rather than trying to stand out so much.

If you listen to much more U2, you would recognize a few recurring themes in their music. The chief thing you might notice is that they are the most thinly disguised Christian rock band tot hit it big. I recommend the combination of All I Want is You / Where the Streets Have No Name form the Slane Castle concert for raw emotional power. U2 is very good in their studio albums. They take the emotional impact to an even greater level as a live act.

That's the infinite guitar (and dangerous, it usually give you some electrical shocks), used only in studio and made by Michael Brook. That infinite guitar save, and made the song. Then band didn't like the song, Bono was working on it because he thought it was good, but they didn't find the key. The infinite guitar came, Michael Brook wanted to be tested by the Edge. The Edge started to play and search for songs. Bono was in a close room, he heard the guitar and asked to Edge to try some ideas with it. And With or without you came to life.
There were only three infinite guitars produced: one was kept by Michael Brook, the other belongs to The Edge and the third one to Daniel Lanois.

They've been making music for 40 years and recently released another album of reimagined songs. They've always been ahead of their time and have influenced music for most of that time. This rabbit hole is DEEP and you're going to love it, I think. They are just as incredible live, btw. :).
If you listen to Where the Streets Have No Name, get the studio version first. The official music video cuts out the intro and outro of the song and that intro is how this particular album that this song here came from started. Most epic lead in to a song. the official music video is great for what goes on in it, but it misses that part of the music that's important I think.
There isn't a single U2 song that I don't like but different people have different eras that are their favorites. Some of my favorite songs from them: A Sort of Homecoming, One, Promenade, Where the Streets Have No Name, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, Stay (Far Away, So Close), Unforgettable Fire, So Cruel. And seriously this list can go on forever so I'll stop there for now! 😂
Some great live songs: An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart live at Red Rocks 1983, All I Want is You/Where the Streets Have No Name live at Slane Castle 2001, With or Without You live in Boston 2001, Exit/Gloria Live from the Rattle and Hum documentary (1988 I think), Until the End of the World (Live video from Zoo TV Tour), Sunday Bloody Sunday live at Red Rocks 1983.
Edit: Their vibe changes through the years. Each album is a bit different to the others but they took a quantum leap on Joshua Tree (the album this song comes from) and another on Achtung Baby.

U2 is a different band. They have a different sound for several reasons. The Edge doesn't shred like other lead guitarists, but there is such subtle soul in many of his composition choices. The soul and feel from him and Bono really carries them and, I have to say (yes, I am Irish), they have such an Irish gift of immense talent for relating emotion and connecting in from down deep. Bono is an elite front man, but none of the others are in people's top 20 of individual instrument playing.

One of my all-time favorite bands and albums! Bono - Super strong, emotive vocals. The Edge - Generally simplistic but beautiful, creative guitar textures that fit wonderfully. Adam Clayton - The guy I wish I could have been, haha. He contributes in his own way but usually has really grounding, foundational parts, but occasionally sets the who vibe, like on New Year's Day, Bullet the Blue Sky, and Mysterious Ways. Larry Mullen Jr - One of the most clock-like, underrated rhythm-smiths to walk this planet. All together, they have created a LOT of magic. Glad you found them. Enjoy!

Their greatest work is the first album - with that generations best guitar player - try the song "KID" "BRASS IN POCKET" "TATOOED LOVE BOYS" --- all different - yet all show Chrissie's excellent unique voice, great writing, and Honeyman Scotts phenomenal subtle guitar work. Cannot go wrong in either choice.
