The “Infinite Guitar” was made by Edge’s friend, Michael Brooks. I own one that has a derivation of that system. WOWY is probably the only song where the infinite sustain system was put to great use. Radiohead uses a similar system on one of their guitars, but they haven’t come near what it’s done on this song.

@@CathyHolton-jh1xvits used a ton by The Church. It’s just an E-Bow. Edge’s innovation was to implement it in the guitar (like a modern sustainiac pickup) - so he didn’t have to hold the E-bow - the e-bow has been around since the 60’s though.

    • @CathyHolton-jh1xv
      @CathyHolton-jh1xv Před měsícem +1

@@zoeherriot I like the Sustainiac system. I’m not sure if you’ve ever used it, but it keeps all strings at the ready in the force field and the player has to control it. Play with a slide and use the tremolo and it sounds like an entirely different instrument. I play around with the Ebow every now and then, but switching strings takes a moment. The Sustainiac is always ready. I put the Sustainiac on an older, cheaper off-brand Stratocaster and it’s more satisfying. It’s like punting a midget when no one is looking.

@@CathyHolton-jh1xv lol - yes, I’ve used it - it’s really cool. I know Ed O’brien of Radiohead has a signature strat with a similar system built in. It’s good enough that the Edge actually uses them on tour. :)

Nice reaction! U2 are a hugely successful rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Comprising Bono (vocals), the Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (bass) and Larry Mullen Jr (drums). They emerged in the early 80's and grew gradually more successful until by the mid 80's they had become well established and were one of the highlights of the 1985 live aid concert.
They have gone in and out of fashion as is the way with bands that endure for such a long time. Some of my favourite early songs include - 'Into the heart', 'Out of control', 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' (from the 'Rattle and hum' live album is incredibly powerful and highly recommended!), 'Two hearts beat as one', 'A sort of homecoming' and 'Pride (in the name of love)'. I'm sure someone will recommend some of the later stuff but the early ones tend to get overlooked by reactors. Cheers.

Beautiful haunting lyrics about endless love with amazing vocals from Bono, excellent music video + the live version in italy were even better, and i still can't believe you never heard this song "With Or Without You" before. I believe the lyrics was about drugs addiction.

Both songs are about Bono's wife Ali Stewart Hewson - his real name is Paul David Hewson - and the challenges of loving a rockstar and being a rockstar who is married.
"All I Want is You" is "our song" for my wife and I. We heard it first the night we met when watching the movie "Reality Bites" and it was our first dance wedding song. (Which I can't really recommend as it's 6+ minutes long with a long instrumental ending). That said I'd probably say "Where the Streets Have No Name" is still my all time fav U2 song followed by "AIWIU" and then "With or Without You." Add "Bad" and "A Sort of Homecoming" into the mix for a top 5 of the ages.

Basically, U2 took over where Led Zeppelin cut off, and they carried the banner of conscious rock'n'roll with an emphasis on conscience for the next 25 years. They aren't as improvisationally dazzling in some ways, but with a vast perspective and carefully crafted effects and meanings. They wrote anthems about both personal struggles/evolution and social/human-rights issues around the world. So many great songs! "Pride" "One Tree Hill" "Mothers of the Disappeared" "Bullet the Blue Sky" "God Part 2" "Rattle and Hum" "One" "Sunday Bloody Sunday" "The Fly" and on and on...
They became such an important voice in human rights and policy that they were literally consulted by senators and prime ministers and top church leaders for inspiration and advice. Their fearless passion for the human condition, both personal and social, affected the world in important ways. They made it COOL to care... to REALLY CARE... what happens to both your own soul and your fellow humans right here on earth. Right now, you are living in a better age to some extent because they dared to stand up and challenge poeple to make better of themselves, inside and out, and to throw off the tyrant, both inside and out.
The also had a sense of humor about themselves, and they made it fun... and perhaps that makes just as much difference.

The song is written from Bono’s perspective of being a rock and roll frontman but also being a married man. Not being able to live without the one or the other.

For a Truly Emotional performance check out their performance of "Bad" at LIVE AID in '85 . Everyone always talks about Queen stealing that show but U2's performance that day was just as good . BTW the "whistling" tone is guitarist The Edge , playing & controlling his guitars feedback . Stacey, This is the song in the Summer of 1987, I went from 🇸🇪Sweden to work @ Diabetic Kids Summer Camp in Penn State (Spring Mount Camp Firefly)!!!
My Coworker from Scotland, promoted the song & made it known to all of us, so after about 8 weeks we all had a hard time into the end of camp's to separate with kids, staff & other staff!
    We became like a Family!
After Camp break, travelling around visiting Coworkers, Kids etc we finally hapened to visit Boston & @ the "Old" Garden we sat in the Ice hockey Penalty box & first saw Little Steven & Disciples of Soul as a warm up to the all summer hyyped U2 in their "Josuah Tour" Concert!
    Still reading?!😉
    Anyway, still 37 years ago...
This Great piece of music - Gives me chills & Great memories back!🫶
A very special reaction, Thank YOU!
Take care & Keep it up!
    Greetings from 🇸🇪!

If this is your first U2 experience Stacey, you have quite a lot to catch up on, as they have been one of the premier rock bands for the past 43 years. You must check out "Beautiful Day", "One", "The Sweetest Thing" (Bono's musical apology to his wife Ali for forgetting her birthday), "Where The Streets Have No Name", "All I Want Is You", "Pride" ( a homage to Reverand Dr Martin Luther King), "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" (an anti war anthem), "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "Gloria", "New Year's Day", "Mysterious Ways", and "When Love Comes To Town" (a collaboration with BB King). I have been a fan from the very beginning and finally got to see them play in November 2019. the 39 year wait was worth every second.

🎼🔥🔥🍀 ... these are the famous rockers from Ireland. .. they have been megastars for over 35 years. It is hard for someone my age (.. college in the mid 80s ..) to think that someone has never heard of U2. That really seems impossible, but you are younger. Not only are they phenomenal artists .. but they have been world statesman for equality , peace and for feeding the hungry. They have large voices in the world of celebrities trying to make a difference.
I will suggest one of my favorite songs for you... it is " Desire " .. from one of their early albums .. - Rattle And Hum -
Looking forward to your discovery of U2. 🍀🔥🔥🔥🎼

I fogot what a great voice Bono has. I remember the first time I learned of U2 when I was a kid. MTV was playing a U2 concert at Red Rocks which is an ampitheatre cut into the side of a mountain in Denver. The mist was rolling in from the mountains while they were performing and it was magic. I believe "The Joshua Tree" was voted best album of the 80's if I'm not mistaken. "Bullet the Blue Sky" was the best song on that album IMO.

My all time favourite rocky ballad (The only thing matching the feels for me these days is 'Daydreaming' by Band-Maid...also a little of that chiming guitar style early on). U2 were the biggest ticket in the world for a while...epic songs, Bono a great poet, and what comes to mind next is 'Pride (In The name of Love)'...their tribute to Martin Luther King.

Once again you pick a great song to react to. This was a monster album when it came out. Pretty much every song is incredible. But seeing them live is another experience entirely. Their pure emotion, the way they interact with the crowd, is just unbelievable. At some point, you will hear something that will remind you of the happiest moments of your life. And at other times you so hear something that will make you cry your eyes out. This band knows how to pull it all out of you. But don't worry, you're cute when you're crying.

Although U2 were already pretty famous before this album, when this single (and Joshua Tree album) was released in 1987, it was during an incredible era of rock music with many other seasoned artists and bands colliding on the charts. Dire Straits, Simple Minds, INXS and many, many more were releasing ew albums in the mid 80s and touring to larger arenas and more international locations . A magical time for rock music .

What you refers to as the whistle tone is The Edge's infinite guitar, producing a similar sound as an Ebow. The signal runs through effects like delay and shimmering reverb (originally created together with Brian Eno for the album Unforgettable Fire in 1984). It is part of The Edge's signature sounds.

There first hits were Sunday, Bloody Sunday andNews Years Day, some other big hits are Beautiful Day, Where The Streets Have No Name, Where The Streets Have No Name, One...another of my favorites, All I Want Is You, Mysteriou Ways, Pride, and Desire. But they also have many deep cuts that are just as great....but for me, live is awesome.
