    I was there! It was crazy! There was a short article in the LA Times that morning about the video shoot so my friend and I headed downtown early because the article said the video shoot was supposed to start at 2:30. It actually ended way before then because it was shut down by LAPD. We got there before noon and heard music playing. I thought someone was just playing U2 songs on speakers, but it was Bono actually singing! He was on top of the roof and there was no one else around us and he waved! (So cool! We’re both HUGE U2 fans). About an hour or so, it got super crowded, people crossing the street in traffic. The video is edited, a lot of the crowd shots were before they played. They only played the song twice before the shutdown. After the shutdown, Bono waved to the crowd to come across the street. (That’s the part you see us all running in the video) We were now in the front of the crowd on the sidewalk so we ran to avoid getting run over by the crowd behind us. All four band members came to the edge of the rooftop and we were all waving and screaming. We (the crowd) had no idea the video shoot was being shutdown. It was so much fun! I just wish I had a better camera! Lol!

    The first Super Bowl after 9/11 U2 was the halftime performers. As they played this song they had a gigantic wall behind them that scrolled the names of every single person that died on Sept 11th. This song hits alot differently for me now after experiencing that performance. I hope y’all look it up and watch it. Don’t even react to it. Just watch it for y’all. Good idea! Btw, MLK was shot at 6:05 PM on the evening of April 4, 1968. But in their song “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, Bono sings the memorable (& some would say “iconic “) lines "Early morning, April 4 / A shot rings out in the Memphis sky,". Now I heard that U2 will sometimes change the lyric in live performances to “Early evening, April 4” because they are now aware of their historical error.

    “We can be in the middle of the worst gig in our lives, but when we go into that song, everything changes. The audience is on its feet, singing along with every word. I've lived in Santa Monica/Los Angeles/Hollywood my entire life. A few friends and I heard about it late and decided to make our way downtown to catch the show. Unfortunately, the streets were so busy and there was nowhere close by to park. We did find a spot about eight blocks away and quickly made our way towards Main Street, and we could hear the music as we got closer. Two blocks away we then heard silence, except for the crowd screaming. It was shut down as we neared main and 7th Street, so it was heart wrenching to know we were just fifteen minutes too late. We hung out for a bit, trying to at least get a glance of U2, but that was not to be either. We strolled back to my friend's car only to find that it had been towed for illegal parking. It was a long, quiet ride on the bus back to Hollywood where I lived. I stoically stared out the window as the silent city passed on by. It's a sad story, but just one of the many sad stories that come with living in the city of Los Angeles. Sometimes it can be the city of broken dreams.

A quick story about the Red Hot Chili Peppers is when they first started out, not a dime between them and sleeping on friends' couches, they came out on stage at a club I worked at butt naked except for socks on their private parts. The place went nuts and the soundman blew a gasket when Flea started peeing on one of the floor monitors. This is one of my favorite songs. It's about heaven, where we won't be separated by the walls that separate us. It's all about love. They grew up in the Troubles in Ireland and went to one of the only cross religion schools in Dublin. They wanted healing for Ireland.
    Also, the Edge's guitar on this is just unreal.

    • @douglastong3208
      @douglastong3208 Před rokem +10

      True. For those who are too young to know, U2 wrote some of their music because Irish were killing Irish (and British) because of political and religious differences. U2 had a knack for writing very moving and emotional songs that resonated with many around the world. And Bono's voice...wow!

    • @orlab4459
      @orlab4459 Před rokem +12

      @aaron duncanson They didn't grow up in the Troubles, they grew up at the same time the Troubles were happening, in Dublin, which is over 100 miles from where they were going on. They were affected only because they chose to acknowledge it, which many Irish people didn't at the time. Also, they attended a protestant school, of which there are many in Ireland. Its also not about heaven. it's about the fact that you could be identified by religion based on the street you grew up, which ties in with the theme of the Troubles. The Edge is amazing though

      Dublin, where they’re from, was not involved in the troubles however & they grew up Catholic. Many early songs have religious references & undertones
      “40” for example is just the fortieth Psalm put to their music.
      “Until The End of the World “ is about Judas & Jesus.

I’ve read that U2 had basically mortgaged their future by putting up the money to make that live concert film at Red Rocks (manager Paul Guinness’s idea). If the film gamble had failed as a promo tool, they’d have been in trouble. What the weather did that day & later that evening-I’ve always considered it the invisible hand of destiny at work. As Bono later said, they ended up getting *”a million dollars worth of free visual effects”* that night for their MTV videos & the film. It created such a unique scene and energy that set the young band apart. What performers get that lucky? U2.

    U2 is STILL one of the most significant rock bands of the last 40 yrs. I've been a fan since junior high. I've been fortunate enough to see them multiple times in concert the most recent being in 2017 when they did the 40th anniversary tour for the "Joshua Tree" album. They started off wanting to be a Christian rock band and a lot of their earlier songs like "Gloria" (not about a woman but rather a song about God. Note that they use Latin in the lyrics) as well as "40" a reference to Psalm 40 are just a testament to their faith. If you happen to read the Bible, you'll recognize a lot of Christian references in their songs. In "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" the lyrics "You broke the bonds and you loosed the chains, carried the cross of my shame, of my shame, you know I believe it" clearly is referring to Jesus carrying the cross for our sins. "Where the Streets Have No Name" is about heaven as another subscriber pointed out as street names of where we live are a socioeconomic indicator. In heaven, there will be nothing to separate us or point out our differences. You'll find Christian references as well in their later work such as in "Beautiful Day" which says "See the bird with the leaf in her mouth, after the flood all the colors came out" is a reference to when God flooded the earth during the time of Noah due to man's disobedience. To ensure that there was dry land after 40 days and 40 nights of rain, Noah set out a dove and she returned with a leaf in her beak and a rainbow appeared in the sky as God promised to never flood the earth again. There are plenty more examples that I can quote but I'll just leave it at that. U2 is not your typical rock band and God bless them for that.

In the past their halftime show was ranked the #1 or #2 (#1 Prince) halftime show. So emotional after 9/11. I'd also recommend their song with Green Day "'The Saints are Coming". U2 has had an interesting career. They started out as Christians making some very good music and political statements about their native Ireland. The first 3 albums were them finding themselves and coming to terms with a rock ethos that collided with their Christian faith. They took a sharpe turn with The Joshua Tree(although "Still haven't found what I'm Looking For" has Christian references). That album made them global superstars. Then they come back and basically cut The Joshua Tree down with Rattle and Hum. Which was an attempt at a very commercial album. And they were very successful with a more pop approach. Auchtung Baby which was more experimental came next. This is their best album in my opinion because you heard things on that album that were very original and hadn't been before. Edge became the most influential guitarist of his generation with his approach. Many would copy his style. Then came Zooropa, which was another departure and reinvention of the U2 sound. This was something seldom seen in music at the time. A rock band had done 4 albums, all very successful, and reinvented themselves with every album. These are the 4 albums that define U2s career if you ask me and the most important albums they did. If you're going to listen to one of their albums you're going to pick one of these albums. That's not to say Unforgettable Fire and October doesn't have some of their best songs. Albums that followed also had some great stuff. How to Dismantle the Atomic Bomb, Pop, and Songs of Innocence were all good. But still say the 4 albums in the middle of their career is where the magic is at. Listen to The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Auchtung Baby, and Zooropa if you want the best of U2. Their career is unique in rock and worth a deep dive.

    • @TheNewRevolution
      @TheNewRevolution Před rokem +1

      @Mandy Jones I love their early stuff as well. I stated that some of their best songs were on their early albums. But for me, the 4 albums in the middle of their career really define their career. Starting with The Joshua Tree. They did things on those albums that no one else was doing. The Edge really found a style on guitar that so many tried to copy. When I listen to one of their songs, I will go back to the early recordings. But if I'm going to put an album on and just press play It's going to be either The Joshua Tree or Auchtung Baby. That's just my taste. But New Years Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and some of their earlier songs are still some of my favorites. They are truly a one of a kind band. It's hard for me to come up with another band to even compare them to, as far as their career goes.

These guys are in their early 60s at this point and still bring it. I saw their 30th anniversary Joshua Tree tour in Detroit back in 2017 (their most famous album, the one this song is from) and was standing two rows from the stage. There are bands I probably like more than them nowadays and whom I’ve seen in concert more, but that U2 show is still the best I’ve ever seen.
    Edit: Dave Matthews Band did a massive free live show in Central Park back in 2003 that brought out over 120,000 people. We did not tell our parents. Back then, no internet. We went to the library, got the phone book for Tempe, and tried to pick a cheap hotel that was walking distance to the arena. San Franciscan, I think was the name of the hotel. Police on every corner between the hotel and arena. Only bad thing, I got stuck sitting behind a smoker and lost my voice, but it was worth it. It was an amazing experience.

    This has been one of my favourite songs from them ever since I listened to it for the first time. Gets me so emotional, not only brings a smile to my face, but also makes me feel like really thankful for just being alive! Ive seen U2 for three times play live, and this song its always one of the highlights of the show! Cheers and thanks for doing this one!

    Jay and Amber, I guess you figured out how U2 got the idea to perform on the roof, yeah? That's right! The Beatles!😊

    I remember seeing them live in 97 at the old Wembley Stadium (National Soccer Stadium of England) One of the last stadium concerts at the Old Wembley stadium before it was torn down and rebuilt. Fantastic concert and good times with good friends, Please don't apologise for your adorable children.

    I'm so glad you reacted to this one! The cop mentioned people comin' in from Orange County. I will never forget that day! Four of my friends and I were 21 years old and hanging out in the garage of one of them, listening to the radio, drinking beers, and just having a relaxed hang with each other. Just like you hear in the video, we heard this as it was happening, but we knew we'd never get there in time, and we had been drinking, so we just lived it right there in Anaheim (not far from Disneyland). What a fun part of music history! I was too young for some of the major events in music history, but I was fortunate enough to at least be part of the listening to this one unfold. Ironically, I now live literally a mile away from the video's location! If it was 1987 now, I could have walked there!

    I was just watching Bono. He looked so happy and like he was doing exactly what was the sweet spot for him. To me, a person doing what means the most to them is so inspiring. I do admit to feeling a little uneasy, looking at all the places an assassin could have been positioned. It is so sad. After John Lennon I began to think of these things. I have always loved this song, first time I have seen this video though. Amazing.

    U2 was THE BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD in 1987, at the time of this video! I remember the 1st time I saw this video, it was Cool, to say the least! The 80's were the Best decade for Music, without a doubt!

    This area is like Skid Row which is literally ONE block away from the super rich Not a good area but the song is "Where The Streets Have No Name". This area like so many others are hidden away like a dirty secret without much help to the poor who need financial assistance, health care for mental illness or drug rehab programs. Such an amazing band!!!!❤

    The rooftop concert consisted of nine complete takes of five Beatles songs: three takes of "Get Back"; two each of "Don't Let Me Down" and "I've Got a Feeling"; and one take each of "One After 909" and "Dig a Pony".

    I was a 21 year old student studying acting at L.A. City College, which is only a few miles from this location. Me and some friends had heard about the video shoot on the radio, and were seriously contemplating ditching class and going. Ultimately we did not go. Every time I watch this iconic video I regret that decision.

    You two should check out the live version of this song with All I want is you as a lead in if you want to see a properly large U2 crowd at Slane Castle in Ireland close to 100k in attendance

      Yes. The absolute BEST. They don’t react to live versions much-but U2’s Slane Castle “All I Want Is You / Where the Streets Have No Name” is the one to do. And it has the greatest transition between two live songs in rock history.

    Jay and Amber doesn’t this make you want to see them live?? I have 5 times. Met them in Chicago in 2018! Absolutely loved the 30th anniversary concert for The Joshua Tree album in 2017! Right after 9/11 they were scheduled to perform at Notre Dame (South Bend) my hometown and we were all worried because it had been less than a month since 9/11, not only did the show go on but at the end they brought out a few NYPD and FDNY officers! Just as a list of the names of all the people we lost was scrolling and they had everyone in tears. I know I was crying! They tied the Irish flag 🇮🇪to the American flag 🇺🇸 and it was spectacular! I’ve loved U2 for over 40 years. You should go further down the rabbit hole and react to “I Will Follow” they look so young and sweet. I love being a member of their fan club they give the best gifts!! Thank you so much for the reaction! ❤️
