- Here is my transcription of "Feel" by Jacob Collier featuring Lianne LaHavas and Pino Palladino off of his new album "Djesse Vol. 2". The groove and harmonies in this song are so cool and I knew I needed to figure out what was going on. I started on 7/27/19 and finished on 8/2/19 (Jacob Collier's birthday!) and spent a total of around 20 hours working on it. If you want to see the process of transcibing, I did a three hour livestream yesterday so feel free to check that out. Just so you know, I chose not to notate the harp in the song because the keyboard is doing something very similar, so I felt like it wouldn't add anything to the transcription. I hope you enjoy!

This is by far one of Jacob’s best songs
what do you love about it?
@@EpiCuber7 it’s a little bit… less (not simpler per say) then his other songs, kinda reminds me of the first half of his “Close to you” cover
I’m very invested in music theory and harmony. The harmony in this song is literally orgasmic and when I listen to this with my eyes closed I have physical reactions to the harmony.
Oh, BuT tHiS iS nOt JuNe LeE ... :D
Fantastic work, man!!
Thanks for the comparison lol
Baixo surreal veiiiii
This was on the Google's top result when I searched "feel jacob collier". The best transcription of the day I had witnessed^^
I bet the groove of this song made Pino want to break into Gravity
Glad I’m not the only one. I didn’t know until this video that Pino was on this track. But every time I heard it, I was all like Damn if it’s isn’t that Gravity groove. Or rather. Feel. :)
I feel the groove
Is it as groovy as possible?
@@jasonfieler it is as groovy as this song is
@@homerles sounds about right
Awesome work! However I feel that you might have over-interpreted a few things. I don't think Jacob used as much microtonality as you have transcribed. Take measure 125 for instance. Some microtonal variations may result from vibrato, as in this case. I feel transcriptions should help in understanding musical ideas, and I think you unnecessarily raise the complexity of simple ideas. Jacob is a monster, yes, but for the sake of transparency, it might sometimes be reasonable to leave some space for the real complex stuff. I know, this is nitpicking, but I just wanted to give some constructive feedback, as I feel this is the least that I can do to thank you for your efforts! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the feedback! My goal in this isn't really to interpret as much as it is to just write down what's in the song but I do agree that I may have gone in a bit too deep with all that
In fact, he does XD
@@mamm2314 he does what
@@jasonfieler He uses microtonality and different tuning in his music.
@@mamm2314 oh ok I wasn't sure what you were talking about when you said "he does" but yes, he definitely uses microtones at times
NOW THIS IS A GROOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unreal, so cool that you dis this, man
This is a remarkable transcription. Trying to figure out how to notate where the voices lay soooo far back (the bass part does this quite a bit too) and then steal the time back to get with the simple waltz drum pattern (time: 2:35, m101 through to "never felt this way before") - nice work, this is amazing. I see now how Jacob does it. Also, that Emaj7 chord in m108 is sooo beautiful. Feel- the time stretch, Feel- the bass bounce and play, Feel- the beauty of Emaj7. Nice work Jason.
Amazing job on the transcription! Very inspiring!
thank you so much!!!
thanks for that work man
This is pretty insane
@Jason Fieler Thank You So much!!!
Any chance you can do or know where to get the transcription for this Tom and Jerry music. Or at least the main theme at 13 sec and the part where Jerry marches towards Tom at 3 min 44 sec? I might be able to do the theme but not the menacing march music.

Nice work
I was just gonna sit down to transcribe this, thanks. That is amazing work, I really wasn't looking forward to it :D
have you got a pdf I could 'borrow' please ;D
Ah yes, Jason "Feel"er
I know it's a joke and I appreciate it but I just wanted to clarify (just for the sake of putting this out there) that my last name is pronounced "Fi"ler (with the "ie" sounding like it does in "pie"). Thanks for the comment!
@@jasonfieler hahaha I know, I'm just joshin :-)
I love your EP!
@@arikayemusic oh wow thanks! :)
Hurts to see the Harpeji part listed as electric guitar
It's a sacrifice I had to make for sake of mass understanding
Slightly left-field question: how do you put together the visual elements for videos like this? Do you save screenshots of parts of the score and match them up to audio in a video-editing software? Or is there a simpler way I don't know about...
Really awesome transcription btw, keep up the great work :)
Thanks! I export the entire score as a pdf, convert it to png, then match it to audio in Adobe Premiere Pro. I wish there was an easier way but this seems to work well enough for now
This is just an awesome work!, do you have this transcription in pdf? I would like to print it!
You're awesome, man!
Nice video
Thanks
Wouldn't it be more correct to write this in 6/8?
Yes
Can anybody write the main chords for this?
yes please! it would be really nice
U can basically play F# and D for most of it unless it modulates
@@brendenm9701ik its been a long while since i originally posted the comment but i had figured it out
@@ItsDextrin HOW HOW HOW
Basically the A section is Bmaj7 then A13 sus or Gmaj7/A
Would it be possible to provide midi files of your transcriptions for future projects?
I'm looking around for ways to do that where both of us benefit somehow so stay tuned
@@jasonfieler It would be great to produce the midi files for the public for educational purposes. Jacob's songs are complex and midi versions of it would be great start to learn from.
@@AJRadaza I do have midi/pdf files on my patreon for $3 if that's something you're interested in. I understand that it of course would be nice to have at no charge but I spend many hours on these projects for no pay because of copyright so the only way I can monetarily benefit is through people purchasing them. I hope you find what you're looking for
Hey do you have this in pdf? I would greatly appreciate it!
Not sure if anyone’s pointed this out, but starting at bar 203 and going until the end, the song is on coltrane changes lol.
Which program you use to transcribe?
Musescore
@@jasonfieler cool, but for labeling the song and being able to listen it on loops or slow it down. Do you use any software like "Transcribe!" ??
@@raphaelaragao4874 oh I just use ableton live to be able to loop sometimes.
@@jasonfieler
Another possible way of working that I use sometimes is the following:
* Import source audio into Reaper;
* Line it up to bars, by creating a tempo track;
* Render chunks of e.g. 4 or 8 bars into separate *.wav files;
* Import the *.wav files into Polyphone to turn them into a *.sf2 soundfont;
* In MuseScore, create a stave to play the aforementioned soundfont in the correct order.
It sounds like a lot of work, but with a little practice it becomes quick enough to be worth it.
P.S. I *wish* MuseScore would be able to play audio and video files alongside the score natively…
