Jacob Collier has hinted at what's in Vol 4 by talking about his 100,000 voice choirs; an amalgam of all the audience participations on the world tour. He said that he started out layering his own, single voice, and now he is layering with 100,000 voices of other people! Harmony is key, both literally and metaphorically.
Perhaps a bit like the progression from dependence, to independence, to interdependence?

Not only visually stunning, your video essay offers one helluva psychoanalysis of Jacob's personal journey (and your candid remark on how his music takes a lascivious turn in Vol. 3 made me laugh so hard!). Regardless of its accuracy, what a moving tribute to JC.

I hope you are happy that Vol. 4 was what you anticipated, and that you're still being the perfect happy analyst counterpart to Jacob's ray-of-sunshine-in-a-bottle character. I've really listened a lot to Jacob Collier the last month. When I listen to other great artists now, it's some times like I go from broadband to dial-up. There is so much information, so much soul food in his music, it's incredible. Yesterday I did a microtonal experiment - listening to the overtones in my own voice modulating a C, and after that I couldn't play my piano like I normally do, cause it just sounded out of tune. Man..

Now after your explanation many questions of mine about this series is answered! Because I am not a native English speaker, I just did not realize all of these songs is a series of stories and why the name is Djesse and why that there is a song named after the name. And now, I even feel more so very touched by the music knowing that there is such a story behind it.

This a well-made, touching, and inspiring video. You acknowledge some nice points that I’ve noticed in his music but you connect the dots in a really poignant way. Jacob chooses to leave his music (at least lyrically) VERY open to interpretation, which is something I have mixed feelings about. He tends to neglect the obvious importance of storytelling and his lyrics sometimes feel meaningless, or extraneous to the music itself. But I like the way you connect it all into one cohesive tapestry, and it adds a lot of depth to how I had thought about it. Way to go.

Magical Video, i had major psychotic episodes because of the djesse series where I felt the music enormously deeply.
But got into a mental clinic because I lost touch with what most of us call reality. I felt like Jacob, started to sing better. So I kind of have a love hate relationship with Jacob.

I wasn't allowed a phone but had an MP3 player with the "In my room" album on it and would wander the hallway feeling fully immersed, trying to sing along as quietly as possible without losing any intensity. In some way it helped me feel understood, but it also threw me further down the rabbit hole

I really loved how you put these albums into words that are so articulate which *may have* also reflected how Jacob is as a person and a musician -- like a personal story but through the lens of his music. I also see it that Djesse vol 1 through 4 are also a showcase of his talent -- on how he touches vast types of genre and make it into a beautiful ensemble whilst conveying a cohesive story. While "Never Gonna Be Alone" is the only thing we know of vol4 and together with the tracks on vol3, the arrangement are much simpler than the albums that came before. It explores more music production and sounds of tech and synths whilst volumes 1 and 2 are more of raw instrument, vocal arrangements, and orchestration. The features on the throughout the album starts of as only him on the first installment, to featuring more known artists on his last album which also have the same narrative as "being at home" to "exploration of the world". Not to mention the album covers where it started as the "life/music" that is contained within him to being outside him then exploring the stars and the last is just plain white with an outline of him which makes it the ultimatum. Thanks for sharing this, subbed!!

Interesting take. When you were saying about vol.3 being partying and on coke, it really made me think of the prodigal son narrative: a boy who goes out into the world in search of something bigger, who gets sidetracked into an inertia, a stasis of ideas and dreams, and who is ultimately saved by rediscovering the father (or I suppose the 'home' or family in your reading of Djesse) and returning home.
In this sense it's a bit different to the Hobbit narrative: there and back again. In the Hobbit narrative the return home is triumphant after having fulfilled his task and grown into a bigger, wiser hobbit. If this were Djesse we'd maybe get more of a sense of triumph in Djesse vol. 3. Perhaps it's in there for the interpretation, but just from what you said vol. 3 sounds more like a betrayal of the enthusiasm and innocence at the start of the journey.
Definitely excited to hear the conclusion. Don't know my favourite so far but it would be vol.1 or 2 as I prefer the classical, folk influences and I find the pop stuff leaves me a bit emotionally unfulfilled.

I mean a lot of your observations seem to match the broad strokes of the narrative he's spinning, but honestly I think this interpretation is pretty literal. It's certainly a concept album, but it really doesn't seem to me like JC's trying to make a rock opera. And in general I think your point could be summed up much more easily by just broadly stating that the Djesse albums are structured like a bildungsroman. That said this is still a fun interpretive exercise.

To elaborate a little: 1. The Call: Djesse is 'called' to adventure from home, 2. Refusal of Call: Djesse's girl shows up complicating his plans, 3. Supernatural Aid: town puts on a leaving party ushering forth Djesse's journey, 4. Crossing the Threshold: literally Djesse leaving home (1st song of volume 2).
I could go on but I'm not going to. Makes me wonder if this was intentional or if Jacob's just tapped the fuck in.
Of course, volume 3 ends with the darkest cave, which makes sense, and volume 4 starts the road back home, a perfect fit.

I think about 25 percent of this is stuff that may have been in Jacob's mind, 75 percent just inventions of your own triggered by your your personal reactions to the music. Nothing wrong with that, I'm sure Jacob would be thrilled to have triggered your imagination so vividly. As long as we are clear about the fact you are not narrating a framing that is connected by Jacob's own words on the subject. Well, like I said, about 25 percent is good. Also he has said Never Gonna Be Alone may be on vol 4, but he has never said that about Sun Is In.
