  • I'm pleased to show you all my transcription/reduction of the first two songs of Jacob Collier's "Djesse Vol. 2". This is my longest transcription yet, and by finishing this, I've transcribed a fourth of all the songs on the album (4 out of 16). Keep in mind that since it is a reduction as well as a transcription, there are a few parts that I didn't add, mostly because they were buried beneath the rest of the music so I couldn't get notes that I was sure were right, so I kept them out. An example is the northumbrian pipes part during the "world goes round" section. I hope you enjoy!
    Corrections:
m108: the top staff of the keyboard part should be in the northumbrian pipes part

I cannot listen to this song through end without putting Bakumbe on. It’s like if I start the intro my next hour and 17 minutes or however long it is are occupied. Fantastic work man!

4:45 I really don't get the tempo. Jacob seems singing in another time signature, while the pipes stay in 12/8. Am I right?

Actually what is happening there is very interesting. Both the vocals and the pipes are in 12/8, but he makes it feel off by having the rhythm section play in almost a 6/4 time starting on the second eighth note of the 12/8 measure. In the video, you can see how the vocals fall right on the dotted quarter note pulses while the piano, bass, and drums start their cycles after the first rest. It's a really crazy idea to have these different time signatures happening at the same time but it feels very satisfying when everything gets back on beat near section L, so I guess it was just done for effect. Thanks for the question!

Are you certain it's a C natural and not a C# played by the guitar and sung by Jacob in measure 32? Also, the E# right before it in measure 31 is tough to hear - not sure if that's intentional or a tuning mishap of the guitar.

Thanks for the comment! As for the E#, I'm pretty sure it's there so regardless of whether it was intentional or some sort of tuning mishap, it's there so I notated it. As for the C natural/C# I always kind of thought it was a C natural but I actually pitch shifted the song up by an octave for that part because it was easier to hear and I found that it is unmistakably a C natural. Thank you for pointing it out though so I could go back and check because there could definitely be mistakes.

I am currently working on a way to get things like that to people who are interested in a way that both people get something good out of it but I'm glad you enjoyed this
