  • Where I answer the question, is there such a thing as too many hot guys in one game. This is a spoiler-filled add-on to the previous Hakuoki Video I did: • Hakuoki Kyoto Winds & ...
    Ranking all 12 routes in Hakuoki Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms while slowly losing my mind. Honestly, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed Hijikata's route retroactively after finishing the other 11 routes. Kodo is also a terrible villain and has way too few standing poses considering how many times I had to see his stupid face.

    I've played Hijikata, Saito, Harada, Sanan and Yamazaki. My interpretation of Harada was pretty different. He seemed more the fun loving guy who still has enough common sense to not drown in a ditch. Unlike a lot of other 'ladykiller' characters, I got the sense he was fairly respectful and upfront about not wanting to get tied down. So there wasn't this underlying question of how many lives he's ruined. He also seemed more respectful of Chizuru's choices and agency than most, even if the whole 'but I'm a demon!' plotline didn't work. It might've worked if Chizuru had focused more on how _her village was destroyed_ and the conflict that seems to arise.
    Hijikata _should_ have been my favourite but honestly he wasn't that affectionate toward Chizuru. If there were more moments of rest and relaxation with him, it'd be great. Swap out some of those 'cool guy' moments for 'sitting quietly and not thinking about angst for five minutes.'

    Kenjiro Tsuda's voice is just...too damn sexy xDDD
    I really enjoyed your perspective on the game and how respectful you were about it, even though you're not the target audience!!!! YT needs more Otome game reviews like this !! Looking forward to your next otome review :D
    also poor Okita ;-;

      Yeah, Tsuda definitely carries the heck out of Kazama's route. I'm pretty sure if he wasn't voice acting the character, I probably wouldn't have liked it nearly as much. Can't say when I'll tackle another Otome game, but maybe when one catches my eye again.

    The extra routes for the original side characters were definitely a reaction to fan requests of "Justice for Yamazaki! But I want Shinpachi!" originally. The other new characters were for sure Otomate just milking the series as seen by the voice cast they chose (Ono Daisuke, Kaji Yuki, Miyano Mamoru). I agree they weren't needed, but if you were a fan of the original game when it was released, the new characters gave you a chance to re-live the Hakuouki story in a new way which was nice. Jumping in at the tail end of everyone being added does seem to be overwhelming which is a shame.
    I def agree with the ranking for the most part, Kazama's route is carried by Tsuda Kenjiro and Hijikata's route is carried by having the actual story. It's good to hear a breakdown of everyone's routes from a non-otome fangirl.
    As a fellow Gintama fan, I too thought of glasses every time Shinpachi's name was mentioned lol

    I’m genuinely really happy that you ranked Kazama Chikage’s route as highly as you did, because I’ve got a soft spot for him and I don’t think he’s really as understood or appreciated as some of the rest of the cast, since he tends to get boiled down to “creepy overbearing demon guy” (which he definitely can be, but I think he’s more nuanced than that too, which his route helps a lot to showcase!). I wholly confess that I’ve got a bias for villainous characters anyway, but there’s a lot to Kazama’s story that I really enjoy just because - like you said - it’s a new perspective to the whole story of the Shinsengumi, and because we never seemed to get quite as much lore on the Oni in other routes, something that drew me personally to Hakuouki in the first place. So getting more of that was very nice! Also, I’ve always heard people say to do Kazama’s route last out of everyone else’s, and I think it really is the way to go, because his third-party perspective to the Shinsengumi’s story feels like it ties a really well-done bow on the history of the group too. After all, they DO all die in real life. So his route, somehow, manages to have a very grounded, realistic feel despite all the heavier supernatural/fantasy elements involved.
    Also yes: Kazama’s voice is literally _velvet in audio form._ Like HOW anyone with a voice like that doesn’t just keep talking all the time, I have no idea, but it couldn’t be me lol.

      Also x2, just so I don’t forget, but this is a REALLY well-done video! Love the organization and all the points you made, everything’s explained really clearly and understandably! I love that you think Saito’s the most handsome of them all too; that’s some impeccable taste right there. 😆🖤✨

    Good review! If you're looking for Visual novel recommendations then I must mention my Favorite VN of all time™ which is Hashihime of the Old Booktown. It's not otoge but it's BL, so joseimuke which is similar(? And that game straight up changed my life to be honest. It's some Umineko level shit. I'd love to see someone else's thoughts on it, I just adore it so much.

    ngl I thought Okita's route in Edo Blossoms was the best one in the game. The whole scene where he confronts Hijikata about Kondou's death was heartbreaking and I felt like him and Chizuru more or less equally helped each other to move on from their mental hardships unlike the usual "you stay behind me cuz I'm about to slice this fool and then all our problems will dissapear" also he's too sassy not to love him lol and although Saitou is actually my favourite out of the guys, his route felt very boring to me I would have rather seen it from his prospective alone because the biggest part of Saitou is his internal struggle about how things are changing. Would have been way cooler to hear his thoughts rather than Chizuru's
    I didn't watch until the end and 26:12 made me giggle

    • @Zyraizo
      @Zyraizo  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, I kinda assumed that no one was going to back up Yamazaki even if I put him last. Pretty sure some people would like Okita though, because honestly I like him. If I were ranking based purely on how much I like each character, he'd probably be higher on my list.

    • @Comedygirl2003
      @Comedygirl2003 Před rokem +5

      frfr Okita's route felt so much more emotionally stimulating than the other routes for me. Like while the other routes banked on action to keep the plot moving Okita's focused a lot on how he is as a character and developing a relationship. He's trying really hard in a really shit situation and the story with him was the only one that really made me feel for a character. The plot may have been more mundane than the others if you're looking for a complex plot to explain every detail of Hakuouki (Hijikata's route no doubt), but it really makes you fall in love with the character. Chizuru also felt more well integrated into the plot, she's his emotional support and they both relied on and learned to love each other (she also actually has some attitude in his route too so that's a win as the MC is usually really complacent).
      Okita's introduced to be a character that embodies that "little shit" role since the beginning and even in the dialogue with him, Chizuru is really unsure what is making her stay with her versus going with the rest of the men. It kinda makes Chizuru more relatable (the feeling of "why do I even like this man" is quite common imo) and how although someone may appear blasé or tough on the outside but is actually struggling hard inside (Okita's voice actor did an amazing job with the scenes where he was on the verge of tears or sobbing).
      I would argue a lot actually happened in Okita's route, it depends how you look at it. Although you weren't present for most of the turning points in other people's routes, Okita's route had turning points of his own (his confrontation with Hijikata, his realisation that someone actually genuinely cares about him, his acceptance that he and Hijikata have fundamentally different relationships with Kondou, realising through Kondou's death that his life didn't have to revolve around him despite feeling admiration/love for him, and his willingness to pick up his sword even for what may be his last time to protect the MC from Kaoru and Kodo near the end). Things that are important to others aren't as important to him and vice versa. It's perspective. I think the company really did a great job on giving a bedridden character who had really hard walls around him all the time the opportunity to let someone in. Character development executed that well while still not losing his sass/teasing is pretty incredible. I initially liked Hijikata's route the best (he banked HARD on that main character energy), and his route felt the most "complete" plot wise to me as was mentioned in the video, but Okita really stole my heart at the end.
      I too found Saito's route kind of boring (I quite liked his character too so it was a bit of a shame), but I surprisingly enjoyed Harada's route a lot. It was the most lighthearted and happy in contrast to Okita's ominous vibe. The other routes like Yamazaki felt a little meh to me because it felt like they really weren't prepared or even intended to launch them from the start.

  • @EleiyaUmei
    @EleiyaUmei Před rokem +1

    I don't know why but I tend to judge routes by their characters (and the relationship with the MC), so your perspective based on story opened my eyes. I'm unable to rank the routes this way, though ^^'
    I also disliked Yamazaki's route the most and while it being boring was one reason for that, it was not the main one. I hated it mostly for his character in Edo Blossoms and how awfully he treated the MC. He was verbally abusive, aggressive and threatening violence. I get he was going through some tough times but letting it out on the person you're supposedly in love with is just bad and horrible.

    I want to recomende a otome game that I think is pretty good. It is called Collar x malice. Its kind of like a criminal mistery story were the protag is a young cop who is forced to stop a terrorist group by the leader of that group. I like your take on hakuouki and I want to see of what you think of Collor x malice

    Bustafellows is a pretty good recent otome game and was the best-reviewed visual novel from last year and one of the best-reviewed games in general from last year (it has an 89 on open critic, only two other games from last year have better scores than it on the site)

      Oh, it's also on steam, maybe I'll check it out sometime then. I see many Otome visual novels are highly rated, but usually it's restricted to a Switch/PS Vita only release. I'll put it on the bucket list, ye know, which means maybe one day.

    Since Hakuoki was my second otome ever, I ended up comparing it a lot to my first, Amnesia: Memories, after I finished it.
    I have a love-hate relationship to Hakuoki because I was expecting romance and the relationship between the MC and the Love Interests to be the focus of the game and was utterly disappointed because it was mainly concerned with the guys and history. The only reason I have an attachment to the game is the characters and I'm glad that I learned more about the history this way.
    As a visual novel, Hakuoki is more good than bad but as an otome, it is terrible in my opinion.
    Edit: I can definitely recommend Amnesia: Memories! It's also available on Steam.
