Luckily what it reminded *me* of was just "crazy?, I was crazy once...", I'd hope that no one has to go through that bullsh|t but I know that's not possible, so I'll wish for people to be able to get out of those situations
Conversion therapy still exists today. The worst part is it was based on caveman like understanding of psychology. It doesn't work and often leads to self terminatio.
And the high self ending rate is literally used to claim being gay / trans is a mental illness because why else should somebody want to do that? (it surely can't have anything to do with the trauma and abuse those conversion therapies exert on mostly children... Naaah.)
Guess for some parents self termination is more acceptable than being LGBTQ!

Also, Lovaas was one of the "experts" who helped invent gay conversion therapy. Lovaas is also known as the "Father of ABA."
The same systems that we use to "cure" queer people of their queerness have a terrifying amount of parallels to what we treat as the industry standard for autistic people.
ABA therapists also very much enforce heteronormative behaviors in their "patients" as well. Many autistic people who have been through ABA have said that their healthy expressions of gender and sexuality are suppressed and punished and that they are pushed to behave in a way that is expected of their assigned gender at birth.

Pro-tip: My parents used to call me 50 times a night when I went out with friends. I didn't pick up because I would either leave my phone at home or turn off the sound. Long story short, I fixed the problem by calling them after I got home in the middle of the night. When they didn't pick up right away, I kept calling until they did. They would complain and then I'd say: "You called so many times, I assumed it was an emergency!😇" The number of calls tapered off *real* quick once I started doing that.😂😂😂

Idk if it constitutes child abuse, but it certainly is vandalism/destruction of the child's property and very much NOT a parent's right!
If a parent gives the child a phone for them to use it at their discretion, that's called a gift and the fact the parents paid for it doesn't give them any right to it, since permanently giving up ownership to something you purchased for nothing in return is the literal definition of a gift.
The parents CAN restrict their underage child's use of it, including temporarily take it away, but they can't take it away indefinitely. So no selling it, throwing away or destroying it without the child's consent, because it's the child's property!

When I was wrongly institutionalized (the people in charge admitted their staff fucked up, but I was never compensated or anything), there was this dude who admitted himself for believing in higher powers.
Genuinely pleasant guy, knowledgeable about religion, easily the most sane person you ever met. But he also thought that being religious is a mental illness. It took the doctors 3 days to convince him he was fine and get him to leave.
I really wish more people had that level of concern for their mental and emotional stability.

I didn't come out to my parents until I was over 18. Still got my college funds cut off(tuition/books, I paid for everything else). My mom told me that if I was under 18, her and my father would send me to a conversion camp. Had that ever happened, I can't imagine how much more damage that would have caused. Funny thing was listening to my mom talk about unconditional love and how I could "tell them anything ". For some young LGBTQ+ kids, my advice is to keep it quiet until you are an adult. It's sad but safer for some. Then at 18, fly your flag🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

my only advice is to just stay closeted for safety, then when you're older and if your parents still plan to give you money, etc for stuff then you leech off of them for as long as you can and as long as you want. If they are to the point of being willing to kick out a kid or send them through some kind of traumatic experience just for their queerness, then no, they do not deserve their normal livelihoods because they'd be so willing to ruin the livelihood of a *child*.
My friend's parents made him sign a contract promising not to date any guys while at college, and if he did, they'd cut him off. He just did it anyways.

The adult child who cuts off their insane parent does not regret it. They grieve the reality of the situation, but they don't regret cutting them off. My narcissistic mother shuffled off the mortal coil 15 years ago and I haven't missed her a day since. I'm glad I never have to speak to her ever again. Her memory is never mentioned by anybody in the family except to recount some delusionally bats*** thing she did/said.
These "parents" face nothing but the solitude they deserve.

About that story where the sister was on the mom's side and ganging up on the younger siblings with her. I know it seems weird for the one sibling to join in with the abusive parent, but its not as uncommon as you may think. For example, my mother used to be physically and mentally abusive to me as a child. She treated me so poorly and my youngest sister always took her side. At the time, I didn't understand how she could see the way I was being treated and still be on Mom's side. As I got older, I kinda figured out what was going on. When a parent treats your sibling poorly, but has always treated you very well, it's easy to believe it's the siblings fault and that they must deserve it. It can't be the parent being unreasonable because they never treat you that way. And this parent, who has always been kind and loving towards you is constantly telling you how bad your sibling is and all the reasons they deserve to be treated the way they are, especially when it starts at a young age, it's easy to just take them at their word. I think part of it could be survival instinct as well. Seeing how the other sibling is treated for every minor infraction and wanting to avoid it yourself, siding with the parent, and even participating can be a self preservation thing as well. There are many reasons this can happen. Luckily, as we all got older, my mother got some help and a better situation and eventually apologized and we are all on good terms now. And my younger sister realized what had happened and also apologized for her part, even though I hadn't blamed her in a long time. Sounds like in this situation, the parent never stopped and the sibling never realized who the real problem was. Now that the sibling is an adult, she is responsible for her own actions and the way she treats people. But it makes me sad because siblings shouldn't be turned against each other like that. This got rambley, sorry, hope I made the point clear.
Exactly. One child is “the Golden Child” who can do no wrong (because they do whatever the abusive parent wants), and the other is “the scapegoat” who is essentially the family’s whipping boy.
The REAL “fun” comes when the parent switches them constantly, pitting them against each other for the position of Golden Child. Those families are VERY sick…

This reminds me of a somewhat famous abuse case in Texas. A girl was horribly abused by her entire family. One day, she 'accidentally' left her video camera on when her dad came in an abused her. You could hear her mother in the background agreeing with the father (a local judge). She kept the recording of it and released it during an election year, trying to show the judge's true personality. Everyone came after her family and she later defended her mother, claiming her mother (and the entire family) was essentially brainwashed by her father and felt if they didn't join in, then they would be the next target. So they literally abused her for their own survival. The mother eventually escaped the situation and realized what she had done and apologized to her daughter. Not sure what happened afterwards. But sometimes, you need to realize that they other family members might only be doing it because they are scared of the consequences if they don't.

My dad once smashed my phone and threw it out the car window when I was young because I forgot to talk to my theater teacher about college opportunies. He claimed to have reminded me every morning on the way to school, but that was a lie.
My father's mom was an insane parent, who abused him a lot (after a while we cut ties with her). When she died, the hospital staff said "We knew something was wrong because she started saying "please" and "thank you"".
Well that's clearly a sign that an insane parent is reaching the bitter end of life. Doing and saying things they never would. Just like cat reverting back to kitten behavior before it's about to die.

My mom legit kicked me out because I wouldn't go with her to Sweden just so my sister could buy a freaking coat. Made it very clear I was NOT allowed back. She'd then harass whoever let me crash at their place and threatened to call the cops on them for kidnapping, so they threw me out too...mind you I was still not allowed back home, she just didn't want me to crash anywhere else. So I spent my Friday and Saturday sleeping at a train station, until I could go back to boarding school Sunday...Oh and they didn't even go to Sweden to get that goddamn coat, she and her BF had too much fun sitting at home making sure I had zero shelter for one goddamn 2 days.
Edit: The trip was strictly because my mom wanted to save money on a coat my sister wanted(Denmark and Sweden use different currency), and I've been stuck at the worst boarding school for god knows how long, I am not spending a weekend in a car, just because my mom hates spending money, ignoring the money that goes to gas for her dumb car.

Pubs do not have age restrictions as they are not "bars." A Public House is open to everyone, serves food from a kitchen, and is licensed more like a restaurant.

Right. Even in the US if they serve food kids are allowed in. We used to go the bar in our town for sodas because it was attached to the arcade (1980s). We were allowed in because they also had a kitchen that served fries and burger type meals to both the bar and arcade.
In Germany, they're adult only as you can smoke there, but those are not common establishments
I'd add that a UK person under 18 can't legally buy alcohol in a pub but can drink it if bought by someone over 18.
E.g. 10 year old me being bought half a cider by my dad on holiday as a treat to make me feel grown up. 😁

I have worked in neuropsychology for pediatric patients for almost 3 years now, and a lot of kids that come in have parents exactly like these ones. I have had a few parents bring their child in (below the age of 1), asking me what I can do because they are not ‘behaving’ how they (parents) want them too. Majority of parents that I meet, say they started to ‘discipline’ their child as early as 2 months because they wouldn’t stop crying, wouldn’t listen, kept screeching, didn’t eat and even pooped too much.

"I've been in college, I know you don't have class" I am a Software Development major who has classes online and thus my schedule is whatever I want it to be as long as everything is turned in by Sunday. The reverse side of that is that I have a friend in med school who's schedule is so packed with in-person classes that I won't hear from them for weeks and then they just suddenly appear again and we chat like we just saw each other that morning 💀
Just because one person's schedule is a certain way doesn't mean everyone else's is the exact same way.

Hell, even in polytechnic, I had classes that last all the way to 9pm, and it's not unusual to see people camp overnight just for the facilities available for their specific work. 😅
Where I'm at, the schedule is different from week to week, and can always change at the last minute. Just because you have my schedule for one week doesn't mean you have it for the next, and from year to year, well, it's even less the case!
Point is: everybody has a different schedule, and just because you didn't have class at 9, doesn't mean it's the same for everyone.
So, yes, I agree, there is no way she actually went to college (or at least, I refuse to believe it as well).

In highschool, my grandma would tease me because she thought I was (gasp) a lesbian. I'm not.

Yeah that kinda bothers me. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate or anything, but it’s annoying when there’s a feminine man or masculine woman and they’re automatically seen as gay or trans. Like Susie from deltarune. I was mildly disappointed that she and Noelle seem to be a potential couple but Susie is still one of my favorites in the game.

At 18 minutes ish, you're referring to conversion therapy. In the US, practicing that will get your license revoked, though unlicensed people happily charge parents thousands of dollars to do it on the grey market. It is outlawed entirely in my state. One program that does conversion therapy flat out told parents "your child has a 50% chance of succeeding in our program (becoming straight and cis) and a 50% chance of unaliving themselves before the end. Dead is better than a gay child."

The thing that always gets me with the apologies in this subreddit is that the insane parent says it not because they mean it, but so they can continue hurting their kids because in their eyes the verbal forgiveness makes it "okay" to do something horrible again. If anyone out there needs to hear this: You don't have to forgive a crappy person for their equally crappy behavior. They hurt YOU, not the other way around. Stay safe, know that you're lovable, and don't be hard on yourself for wanting to set boundaries 💜
Precisely! It has to be more than lip-service! A book I would recommend is “How Can I Forgive You?” by Janis Abrahams Spring. It gives very good examples of false apologies and genuine ones.

About the conversion therapy parent: I assume that the misgendered child is non-binary because the OP refers to them as their "sibling" (a gender-neutral term) and with they/them pronouns.
They could also just be protecting their identity with gender neutral terms

I was a little confused about that myself. At first i thought the sibling was a gay trans man, but then the mother mentioned them “making out with girls”, and it’d be kinda weird if the sibling was a gay trans woman and the mother somehow respected their pronouns but didn’t respect their orientation. Perhaps it’s a nonbinary person attracted to women. No matter the specifics, the mother sucks and i hope the sibling somehow got help.

Any parent is responsible for providing shelter, food, clothing, education, etc. for their kids. If someone reads this and have been told that they should be grateful for that, you're being manipulated. That is your parents' obligation to you, and NOT something special that you're beholden to them for. They chose the job of parent, so don't let them rope you into anything. And remember: even animals take care of their young to the point where their offspring is old enough to survive on their own.

It's amazing how many of these insane family members flip the meaning of "blood and water" to mean family is more important than friends. When the actual phrase is "blood of the covenant is greater than the water of womb"; the exact opposite meaning forged friendship is more valuable than the family you're born into.

The shorter phrase is first seen in writing in the 12th century and the longer phrase appears to have first cropped up in writing in the 20th century, sources cite the 1990's and 2000s. So @GretchZ is correct, the idea that the longer phrase is older is a bit of historical fiction similar to the idea of vikings wearing horns on their helmets, popular but unsubstantiated
Remember that if a parent destroys property that you paid for, you can take them to small claims court where you don't need legal representation. Just present the evidence of them admitting they destroyed it and they have to pay you back.
My parents never really cared much about me. My mother left when I was 7. My father put me in foster care for 3 years, and even afterwards, he just never was emotionally available.

Ugh, passwords. Our parents initially had our passwords for some things "just in case" (we were stupid and brainwashed). And they had my sister's bank password because she didn't update it when she turned 18. Well not right away. But then she changed it for some reason, and the *very next day* our egg donor called her freaking out that her account had been hacked, but when she called the bank to report it they wouldn't even talk to her. That's when my sister learned she'd been logging in almost every day to check what my sister was getting up to. Needless to say when I turned 18 about a year after that my bank password was changed immediately.
Watching insane parents reminds me that yes, my parent may be a bit insane, but these parents are far more evil.

Whatever consequences come from that choice, that's on your parents, not you, and they owe you all the support they can give you through whatever life throws your way. If you're at high risk of being abused or discriminated against because of LGBT+ identity, neurodivergence, disability, or any other factor, it's your parents' job to do whatever they can to support and shield you from harm. If you're at high risk of never owning your own home because you were born in a time when previous generations had already rigged the economy against you, then it's your parents' job to help you with that any way they can.

This works very well with economies where parents receive allowances from the government for raising kids. You give a basic allowance to everyone so nobody starves, but parents who want to get paid more need to be more qualified. Do your annual parenting skills continuing education, get higher pay for your parenting.

ADHD and autism can make simple existence unnecessarily complicated. My advice is don't have kids if you have a difficult time making your own life not a living nightmare. Your own problems can find a way to transfer themselves to the kids.

In Germany 8ish hours first aid classes is a mandatory part of obtaining a driver's license and many jobs require regular refreshers.
I personally think these classes need to be publicly available without charge but wouldn't want to hold cost of living support hostage over them.
There are some classes/coaching available for parents trough the Jugendamt but it's regionally dependant and inconsistent
Kids also get to stay with CPS whenever they want (motivating some parents to get better)
I don't support the idea of a license because minorities' applications would conveniently get lost. I think schools and doctors do a pretty good job of catching abuse but for homeschooling families, it's way too easy for the kids to fall through the cracks so I think they should get mandatory regular doctor visits, proctored state tests so their mom can't take them, and one-on-one interviews with a case worker. My family did isolated K-12 homeschool and thought the government was after us and moved to the middle of nowhere and there were times when we were malnourished, medically neglected (like being left with untreated asthma for 6 months and becoming hypoxemic), and letting the house get down to 40 degrees F (4.4 C) and our parents acknowledged how bad it was and talked about how they'd get in trouble if anyone found out how we lived and filed false homeschooling records to pretend that we were doing classes and coached us on what to say to case workers (and also hinted at planning to shoot them if they tried to take us).
The mother blaming her children for her other child's death reminds me of the story where a woman accidently suffocated her child and then blamed it on vaccines. It was on a documentary on how the anti-vax community works.

The college kid getting texts from her abusive mom hits home. My mom beat me, usually for no reason, sometimes as "discipline". When I turned 18 and started telling people what happened my mom was telling everyone I was lying. And I recently found out the reason my two younger sisters never contacted me was because my mom told them they weren't allowed to talk to me.
Sadly the story doesn't have a happy ending. I ended up not being able to find a place to work or live so ended up moving back in with my mom and sisters. I did end up getting married, but due to financial issues we live with my mom. And she hasn't really changed at all. She doesn't hit me anymore but she is still mentally abusive to me. Recently I found I have autism and ADHD so am in therapy to try and figure that out and get help finding a way to make an income to move out. My biggest issue is my youngest sister has cerebral palsy and needs a care giver and my mom has been using me as a live in care giver only paying me $50 every two weeks when she gets paid. I have already looked into trying to find her a home to move into but all of them around here are terrible places, and I don't know how they are open.

In regards to 24:19, American English often overstates things, so while 100 degrees isn't unreasonable in some places, it may still be an exaggeration. If someone says "its freezing" in place of cold or very cold, that too is an overstating. In contrast, British English, from my understanding, prefers understating. American English also tends to use numbers like a dozen, hundred, and thousand just to express "more than we could count at a glance." Languages are a lot deeper than people tend to give it credit for, most don't notice the complexities because they are used to it.

If the MIL at 21:09 is an active JW and her child is moving in with someone before marriage, the usual reaction would be shunning. Must be that the kid was never baptized - that's the only loophole I can think of. Otherwise, she's bluffing, because shacking up with someone without marrying them is a disfellowshipping offense, meaning your parents MUST shun you, or risk disfellowshipping themselves. That means no contact, so no following and harassing.
Oh, I can see a way OP of that story can weaponize that information to protect themselves. Report their mother to the police and the church.... Easy way to get rid of the problem.

If they were never baptized (and so won't be shunned or disfellowshiped), then it becomes a case of the Elders not helping because they don't go against their own on the side of someone "worldly." However, behind the closed doors of the Kingdom Hall, that MIL would be 'marked' - that is, viewed as a potential source of sin and trouble and treated like a pariah. Any privileges she had - and women don't have many - will be taken away.
That's why I was so puzzled by this, MIL must have joined later in life so that her children aren't baptized or part of the congregation, otherwise, she would shun them before ever threatening any harassment or stalking.

The "therapy" you're wondering about at around the 18:00 mark is called "conversion therapy" and it's illegal in quite a good many countries, complete with criminal penalties in some of them.
Norman Oklahoma in 2021 finally banned conversion therapy.
