- The Witcher tells its story in a non-linear fashion from three different points-of-view, so it can be a bit difficult to follow at first. It’s definitely not the kind of show that you can just leave on in the background and expect to follow, but once you do understand where the story is going, it’s a richly rewarding experience. If you need a recap or still have a few things you don’t understand about Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s stories, we’ve got you covered. Let’s take a look at the explanation of the entire story of Netflix’s The Witcher so far.

Did you find The Witcher story confusing too?
Nuh hun!
Nope!!
Interesting??
-Yeah!!!
Nope. I have a brain.
Confusing? Do you not know how to follow stories?
Fool I've seen West World! After that these timeline acrobatics are child's play.
Not really
It was easy to understand at the end but those change of timelines were pretty unreasonable
Kinda wannabe inception
The only confusing part was the lack of labeled times between the shots. Having read the books, I was pretty much on it.
Yes, I haven't read the books so that was very confusing. It mostly made sense in the last episode. Since you read the books, I have a silly question. Did the Witcher conceive Ciri naturally? Like did him and the mother actually have sex? Or was she only impregnated by magic? Because we know he's meant to be infertile.
@@cookiesncream789 Umm I think you really misunderstood something. Ciri is not related to Geralt. She's just promised to him, like Duny was to Ciri's mother.
@@itsmaidah Obviously I did... that's why I asked. 🤷🏽♀️
@@cookiesncream789 it's literally in the show :\
Yes, as a total newbie to the story when I watched the series, that would have helped me a lot. But I still enjoyed it!
Not gonna lie, it took me til like episode six to even figure the time line thing 🙄
Lmaooooo
Yes!!!
The Witcher Soundtracks on my channel btw
While I understand the timelines from already knowing a bit about the series, I believe they really should've explained or atleast captioned the different time periods throughout the show. It's pretty difficult for a normal viewer to understand that the events in season 1 happened as far as decades apart. It also sucks for character development when 1 scene takes place and then the next scene afterwards with the same character is 10 or 20 years apart
I loved it but hard to follow I'm now watching it a second time
Well, time difference is clearly mentioned one way or another every time it switches, but you have to pay attention.
@@boskee that's why I'm watching again
bondisa that's why there's gonna be a second season
@@thomasfulton0505 yup, it's almost designed to be watched twice
One of the most confusing shows I’ve ever watched. Also one of the best.
i found it dumb
@@herohour6496 u r dumb.!
Then u haven't seen dark yet
U have no brain
VISHNU TUBE tell that to the 115 people who agree with me
It was definitely confusing and somebody who started viewing the tv show without knowing any background would have a tough time following the timeline.
There are plenty of clues. People look older or younger, costumes look new and perfect or well worn etc.
THANK YOU
Im new to this ok i played a bit of the witcher games but nothing else i didnt know wth was happening
@@StudioArtFX may watch it multiple times to help understand jt
@@phantomfire7205 I've watched it twice already. I will probably watch it again before season 2 drops, which is pretty soon.
This was the first show that even after watching full season i didn't know what happened throughout the series. 🤐
lol same
Same
same but enjoyed it a lot
Try being stoned and binge watching the entire 1st season... It's crazy confusing lmao
Right
renfri told Geralt that queen calanthe just won her first battle at Hochebuz, minutes earlier we find that Calanthe won that battle at Ciri's age. If that helps with the timelines
That's an interesting point
While watching the beginning episodes I didn’t know that I was watching different timelines and by the time everything clicked I realized that I had been watching separate timelines, while understanding that, I’ve come to the conclusion it would’ve been better to know the year of the scenes while I was watching it in the first place
Exactly.I knew after few episodes about separate timelines but I wished they should have put years ago/later headings to make it more fun and interesting rather than struggling for audiences
I don't understand why everyone are complaining about confusing timelines.
At first it was confusing, but at the end it totally adds up.
It is like a puzzle, if people pay attention every piece start to fit and the whole story makes sence
@@edercastro7625 Exactly
Exactly
It was easy enough to put together but just felt unnecessary.
I know right
The last episode made it all make sense to me
I loved the mixed timelines. When it finally added up it was awesome. I think it wouldnt have been so nice if they had done a normal timeline. In my own opinion
Hello.
@@henrycavillorg1296 hi
Kinda like HTGAWM
I watched Season 1, read all of The Witcher books, and then re-watched Season 1.
Looking back, I thought they could have done a little better job making things clearer & easier to pick up on, especially if you're trying to gain new fans of the show.
However, I did enjoy the challenge of it all that first viewing, like a puzzle, and different compared to most shows.
Happy to hear Season 2 will be a lot more streamlined, good for character development and hopefully picking up more fans of an awesome story.
You did an absolutely SPECTACULAR JOB putting the entire season together in 5 minutes! Thank you - lots of fun to watch your video.
Damn! I just miss Renfri, I would really love to see that Princess again
Yes, I was a bit put out when she met her end in episode 1! I thought they were going to be travelling together or something... but then that would be like every other drama wouldn't it... I love the storyline actually :-)
I saw The Witcher Season 1, It was great, can't wait for Season 2
That was Season 3 next is Season 1 followed by Season 2.
@@m0nkey13 😂😂
Definitely confused me at first, but once I realized the queen was dead, then not dead was when I started wondering about timelines. Also Cyrilla and Pavetta look so similar that it threw me off haha (might’ve butchered those names)
Were the timelines really that big an issue for viewers? I caught it on first viewing. My first clue was Stregobor looks old the first time we see him, and then he looks young the next time we meet him. Seeing the king and his sister being around ten years old, at the ball, was the one that sealed it. I think it was brilliant. Also, this isn't the first show to do that.
Thank you for the voice of reason among all that hype ❤😁
I agree
@@wes8723 When Yennifer first arrives at the school, and Stregobor is trying to get Istrid to pry information from her, it's the same actor, but he has less wrinkles and no grey in his hair or beard. I think this is the oldest point in the story. We don't know how long Yennifer trains in the school (unless it's in the books), but on the day of her transformation, King Foltest is about 10 years old. When The Witcher is in Tumeria, King Foltest looks like he is in his 50s. In the final Battle, when King Foltest finally gets there, he looks even older, like maybe 60s.
@@StudioArtFX The "Yennefer story" was developed in the series. There is only a mention in the books about her past. I think they did fantasting job creating that plot and entwining it into the whole story. In my opinion time travels in the series is fenomenal it only adds mistery and enriches the tale. That should not be a problem for an attentive watcher. 😊 I enjoyed it a lot .
Wow you are so clever!
So far... The best summary there is on the net. Well done guys
Didn't realize how weird the timeline and character plots were until we saw Geralt at Sintra (if that's how you spell it) before the Queen, when we had seen her jump out a window in the first episode! That also gets covered from Geralt's point of view later. I thought I was stupid or something at first when I was confused 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, that confused me for a while LOL
It was an Amazing 1st season :) And sadly will have to wait another year the 2nd season. But, Great and simplified Video, I like it :)
Thank you so much. I needed this video. The way you explained it will help me when I watch the series again for the 3rd time.
😂😂😂😂 me too for the nth time
Nicely explained!
I was very confused by the timeline but his video gave me a bit of insight! Thanks!
Any scenes with Yennefer - Past
Any scenes with Geralt - Present
Any scenes with Ciri - Future
Eventually they all submerge, not that hard to follow. Critics just saw 1st episode and passed the judgement for the whole season based off that. Not sure if bad or impatient.
What about when they’re in the same ones haha
Still is confusing
This is 'The Witcher explained if you didn't watch season 1' not actually explaining anything that viewers don't already know
Actually, a lot of people I know, including myself, had a problem understanding the time lines. So this really helped!
It really isnt that hard if you just pay attention
It’s not but it’s confusing as the characters are medieval and sometimes tend to look alike. I think a change on lighting at least would had made a little of sense, like the colors being a bit different during flashback. Not everyone read the books or play the games, the point of and adaptation is to hook new audiences. Despite all that it’s great.
*Geralt's timeline* in season 1 is not over 20 years, rather *atleast over 30 years* period.
Renfri mentions to Geralt about Calanthe winning battle of Hochebuz at that time.
Calanthe and Ciri also discuss about this battle when Calanthe was of Ciri's age.
Once you figure out that the timelines are different, it actually makes the show even more interesting. I felt kinda proud of myself when I figured it out after being confused for a bit. Didn't even pick up on Yen's story spanning that many years though
Oh dear. Even more confused.
Exactly, I came here to clear my confusion and leaving more confused.
I think this can't be summarised in 5 min
what i understand is that there are 3 timelines, that all coordinate towards the end.The witcher starts first, then yennefer as she grows and becomes a mage and all this happened before ciri was born. They showed ciri fleeing the castle between the show to just help join all three timelines.Ciri's journey was just 2 weeks while yennefer and geralt had a long journey all leading upto the end.
I needed this, yes.
But why doesn't Jeskier getting older?
I think he is with geralt for almost a decade. But he remains same.
Henry Cavil did a good job for this roll but to me, he will always be Superman!
Just watched it over the past 2 days and although I enjoyed it and thought it was cool I had no idea what was going on 😂 Episodes 6,7 and 8 I started to try and piece it all together and was thinking there was a time loop or something but this video helped me out 👍🏻
This serials it’s amazing ... I finished in only 3 days 🤭
I’m waiting for more episodes 😍
Best regards
Thank you!
Why do we need to wait a year for the second season😭😭
The timeline : ↙️⬅️↘️➡️↗️🔽↖️⬆️⬇️↕️↪️🔁🔂🔄⤴️🔃⤵️↙️↘️↗️
It shows the years that past by showing when the incest king and queen that had the cursed princess were children when geralt met the lioness of cintra .. then geralt seen him as a old king as he attempt to save the princess
In a way it is good that they didn't 'dumb it down' with dates I suppose... I guess knowing there are about a zillion fans of the books and games out there who are familiar with what happens when, maybe they didn't give any thought to the newbies... if I have one complaint (and its not even that, really) it would be that some dating or 'ten years earlier...' might have helped those new to the mytholody. I hope no-one got put off by the lack, because it is a brilliant story, I look forward to reading the rest of the books, playing the games, and then season 2... :-)
This is the first time I've watched an explainer and still feel lost. Apparently I am one of thousands who watch even though we are somewhat to completely lost as to what's happening. Yet, its so good, we don't care. Can only imagine how good this story is when you understand it!
I got lost so many times in the timeline while watching the series...😥 thanks!
I think the quality of the show is good but the organization could’ve been way better. It takes a few episodes before you start to realize their are multiple timelines and once you get to the last episode they all meet but I definitely would’ve rather had them go in chronological order.
i actually think the way the story was projected was really unique. it's a kind of show that would really make you think and would make you wonder about alot of things. and because of that, you would eventually want to watch the next episodes, for you to really figure the whole plot out. so personally, it was a really nice touch. but if you are lacking of comprehension skills, well ofcourse, it would probably confuse u a bit. Overall, i think it's an amazing show. Got me hooked and wishing that season 2 would come out alot sooner.
What we need to know is everyone is on the same TIME by the end of the season.
well, yes actually. by the end of s1, geralt and ciri meet in a week or so after the battle of sodden where yennefer and the other mages were fighting nilfgaard's forces.
@@lanzsumulong285 He just said that mate lmao.
Please make more on the Witcher
Yessss
I (sadly) haven't yet read the books or played the games but I understood the timeline. Had to give it some thought, but I was able to figure out some stuff and enjoy the ride without being confused the entire time.
Only issue I had with the show is how unclear the timeline of it was. I wish they put a little more effort in to the appearance of different characters, showing the passage of time, like Calanthe and Mousesack wearing different hairdos, or Yaskier fashioning different facial hair (or actually have crowfeet as Yen says).
by episode 5 i was mind blown and had come to the realisation of the timelines and decided then and there that this show is awesome and im sticking to it!
Jarucium yes!!!! The end of the 5th episode is when it all clicked for me.
@@LilMermaid28 Same haha nice!!!
Soundtrack used in this video please?
This was good
Yennefer is older than Geralt by a considerable amount. He was being born around the time we first see Yennefer in episode 2.
I think it was a good choice. Added a bunch of rewatch value imo
I'm still mad at them because they used the word "CHAOS" so many times but did not clarifiy what exactly is it, so confusing timelines and names too, thank you for the video
I think the show did really well in actually not making it confusing. I think people were trying too hard to figure out the timeline, when really if you just watch it, there's always some information for you ti know when which happens. For me in my mind, the point of reference is just before or after Cintra falls, shortly before, shortly after, long before or long after. For yennefer there's the point of reference was aretuza. When she was in that cart she mentioned she served the king for 30 years, which means it was 30 years after aretuza, and then there's there's cintra falling again when nilfgard was only planing to attack, which means from aretuza to cintra's fall, it's been many decades.By the time she was defending with the rest in that final episode she mentioned she's lived 3 lifetimes, so 70 years sounds about right. As for geralt's it's really just that day with the law of surprise and fall of cintra. For ciri it really is just after the fall of cintra and considering she hasn't grown I'm guessing it's at most months.
The MAN, The MYTH, The LEGEND of The Witcher that's Geralt of Rivia!!!
I want to see parody of beauty and the best in next season (i aughted so much from reading about it in the books).
I don’t think the timeline was hard to follow. At least for me. If you pay attention, then you know what’s happening and you begin to understand that there are different timelines. It’s kind of like when sucker punch came out and people didn’t like it because they got confused with the different “realities” within the movie and only the people who paid attention understood what was happening. In my opinion it’s a great way to capture the viewers attention and engage them in what is going on.
What would happen to the viewers who are watching "Dark", when they are confused in this not-so-confusing-at-the-end series??
Love this show!
I actually watched ep.4 on accident clicking on it instead of ep.1
after watching ep.1 it was pretty easy to recognized the time jumps
I finally pieced together the chronology of the series after the 3rd watch or so. Never played the games. How does Jeskier not age though??
First time in this universe and loving it. So should I read the books now or play the game first?
Same here! I've just started on the books, and I'm starting on The Witcher 2 game as well. Not a gamer (well apart from Eurotruck Simulator 2) so I'm still learning how to control Geralt's movements. at the moment I'm still stuck in the arena LOL
Games arent cannon so the books
Hi
Just now finished watching The Witcher 10 years ago.
I have tracked many reviews of the plot but no one explains the doppelganger of Cahir (previously Mousesack )who kidnaps Ciri and ties her to a tree. Then Cahir and Fringilla make a pact to find her. Then no followup - all of a sudden Ciri is in a town and hijacks a horse. Also Geralt is always wondering who this person the forest will be when in a previous time line he tries to rescue her from Cintra.
OK her friend unties her from the tree - but will the doppelganger appear later? we'll see
The timelines weren’t the issue. It seemed more like the first season was about Yennefer with supporting cast Giralt and Ciri. I would have thought Geralt and Ciri would be the main focus. With side looks at Yennefer. I know in the video games it’s central theme IS Geralt and Ciri.
so confusing, but that scene with the hunchback yennifer getting nailed was worth the confussion
*CINTRA IS NOT A NISSAN CAR MODEL*
SIN-TRA NOT SENTRA...
I thought the whole timeline thing is genius I was confused at first then I loved it
Am I the only one who realized that there were different timelines on Episode 1 when Renfri talked about Queen Calanthe???
Would it be so hard to like have a date for every episode because i watched this a year ago and just now learn that 20 years pass in one season
I had never played the witch game before this so it was really confusing for me. Anyone want to give me a crash course on what I should know?
Why are you not putting Videos on 13 Reasons Why and How to get Away with Murder?
Hmm
This was one confusing show. I mean I couldn't do take me eyes off the tv once because I might got lost when I look look back on the screen. I always say a show is good if I can answer a few messages on your phone while listening to the show and not get lost... well maybe am just not smart enough for this one.
I think if you don't have any idea of the mythology or that Witchers and Mage's age slower than everyone else, which I didn't when I first started watching, then like me you'd be a tad confused. LOL
i quite liked this as a story telling choice. I went into it knowing nothing at all about Witcher except it was a video game at some point. The mismatched timelines introduced alot of main characters that otherwise would have had nothing to do with each other for a long time, gave opportunity for some Monster of the Week type adventures for the Witcher.... and generally didn't dumb it all down for lazy viewers who want it all handed to them neatly tied up with a bow. Yay for storytelling that requires us to think.
I think yennefer can make herself not age. i believe tissaia and her talk about how she lived for 3 lifetimes and how she's not satisfied. idk just putting that out there.
So I wasn’t buggin tryin to figure out everything jumping all over the place ? I’m like hold uppppp
Yep
I like the characters and story, but the timeline, jeez, i have tried to figure it out for 7 days and it still doesnt make sense.
Its not even that confusing..
Melvin * to me it was :)
Christopher Lambert (highlander) in his mid 30s would have been a better look for Geralt than Cavill but Cavills acting was really good too.
Much as I wanted to watch this, gave up half way through as it kept jumping around and I got pissed off with it
You have to pay attention are 3 timelines if they wanted say their origin they were forced do
You must have add
Don't blame the show. You're just impatient.
I thought the same but I kept with it. Try it again later you may feel differently later on.
Just stick with it, this was just for the 1st season. At the end of season 1 the 3 timelines had caught up with each other and it will a lot less complicated come season 2.
I don't think the timelines confused me as much as how and why everyone's destinies were intertwined. Maybe it just went so quickly and I wasn't paying close enough attention...?
The witches' Daddy Yennefer and Tris is talking is an enemy right?
Many movie and TV program makers think they are very cool and smart jumbling up timelines. Very few bother to flash up the chronology of the segment. In some cases you can follow the story if you concentrate hard enough as you are watching but not every thing is worth your undivided attention, and then it just gets annoying.
When does the second season begin?
January-march 2021 probabably
@Michał z Lechii I hope sooner, the End of this year december 2020
What was the significance of the striga? I still don't get the point of that part.
it looks simple but it isnt
the timeline jumps without telling the viewer
5:18 who is Rem?😂
wow that's a lot to follow.. 😁
Question: is this show any good?
Been trying to find another show something like Game of thrones. Have been seeing a lot about this show in my recommendations. Should I binge?
SHANE WALLACE opinions are subjective. Watch it and form your own opinion.
I began watching it with skepticism, but quickly became hooked. Watched first 3 episodes consecutively, then the rest in the next 2 days.
Witcher series came out December 20 and by December 30, it was Netflix most viewed show of all time...That's gotta be something.
NO!
I would caution on saying it is similar. This has more magical fantasy than GoT. So imagination will be working overtime. GoT pulls you back to reality a little more than this series. If you wanted more fantasy in GoT, this will deliver.
"Star-Crossed lovers" are they doomed in the end 🤔
You can't explain the entire story of the witcher franchise in only 5 minutes my friend
It's not the entire series just the show he is only explaining the timelines
How is renfri related to ciri?? Are they same ???
I'm on book 4 now. In the books the bard is called 'Dandelion' btw.
Hi
Having never played the games, and watching the show, that it's got multiple time lines, jumps around them randomly, and has a story with no clear land marks for time or narrative development, this just makes we wonder why anyone would put a story together like this. And explains why I kept asking myself wtf is happening and why.
It's like they got the guy who wrote Lost to write it.
Missed a plot. Getting captured by elves then the elves been killed
What? The elves that got killed by the Cintrans weren't the ones lead by Fillavandrel. There are different elves.
It’s SO. FUCKING. CONFUSING!!! I’ve never read the books and it was quite a struggle to put it up together! I still haven’t fully understood this fucking timeline... it took me like two or three episodes to realize they happen in different times. Gotta watch it again. Hmmm... fuck
Hi
I never found it difficult to follow the timelines. But for someone who didn't this video doesn't help. This video will confuse them more than the series 🤣. Seriously Looper, you could have explained it far simpler and easier.
Yennefer - past
Witcher - present
Ciri - future
This is how It started then Yennefer and Witcher's time period sync up later Ciri's sync up too.
great! im still confused
Geralt Slays n lays wharever he thinks need to be either of those two.
While the multiple timelines itself isn't confusing and most people catch on after a few episodes, the choice to have them in the first place seems unnecessary. I think the tonal difference between them is jarring. It could have been executed better
