DJ Yella: All of NWA Knew Ice Cube Won With "No Vaseline"

  • www.vladtv.com - In this exclusive clip with DJ Yella, the founding member of NWA spoke about how the group dissolved after the second record, as well as Ice Cube's legendary diss track "No Vaseline."
When asked about how the group felt after Cube left, DJ Yella told us that it wasn't a regular topic of conversation, but he briefly acknowledged that the group's feelings at the time were made known on "Message to B.A.," short for Benedict Arnold. Their song later spawned Cube's diss "No Vaseline," which DJ Yella thought was "cool," despite being named on the track. He then added that all of NWA knew that Cube "got us on that one."
The conversation then turned to the group dissolving after their second album, "N****z4Life," was mixed, and DJ Yella made it clear that outside people broke up the group.

Yella is such a respectable person and you can tell by the way he handled this particular interview. He never put words in the mouths of those who weren't there, because he realizes that it isn't his place to give out information on certain situations; since he either doesn't have all of the details and the details he does have are better left unsaid, and left in the past. He's such a laid back guy. Respect, Yella!

    • @mariahyohannes
      @mariahyohannes Před 4 lety +2

Leon Anderson First and foremost you don’t know me so don’t speak on if “i’m tough or not” secondly he is grown as hell and you could tell he didn’t wanna speak on certain things because certain things don’t need to be said on the internet. Also as a professional journalist you learn that if it’s evident they don’t wanna talk about it move on, because then at that point you’re wasting the interview by trying to get them answer questions they don’t wanna answer and you’ve wasted time.

@Mariah J Let me preface this by saying this is not an attack and that I realize this comment is old. I just saw this video cus I have nothing better to do. Familiar with Clad, can't stand him but I saw Yells so I clicked. Worth.
Anyway he's not a journalist. He goes by DJ Vlad. He's a journalist the same way everyone on The View or The Real is a journalist. He does these interviews for internet traffic, doesn't seem to care about whether or not the feedback is positive. He's still getting paid.
He's a gossip columnist with a different platform that is almost exclusively based off of hip hop/hip hop history -- really just gossip at this point. Almost every interview is intentionally crafted to get someone to talk shit about someone else. His bread and butter was recording Lord Jamar talking shit about Eminem although that dead horse may finally be allowed to rest in peace at this point.
He's not Anderson Cooper, more like Maury Paurovich or whatever his last name is and he seems content with that. He will never conduct interviews the way a professional journalist should. It seems like professional journalists don't do that anymore either.

Big respect to Cube for not signing that jew contract. But he was also was the one with not a lot to lose since he was still a youngster when he was with NWA- he didn't have a kid, he still lived at his mom's house, and he knew he was the most lyrically talented member of the group. Of course he wanted that money but he wasn't down on getting fucked. So he went to NYC to record Amerikkkaz Most Wanted after he called it quits with NWA. The rest is history.

When DOC hit the mic, it was like....ohhhhhh shit! I'm telling you, if Doc didn't have that accident, he would've gave Cube a run for the crown! Doc's lyrics was bang'n and his voice and a variety of tempo's made him dangerous on the mic! The whole city was sad when Doc got hurt i swear! Even after all this time, we still say maaaaan if Doc didn't get hurt, it would've been a totally different scene on the west coast. And yes i still have Doc's album in my rotation...please believe! Shout out to Gardena and yall stay safe✌🏾💯

This is all true. I was a little kid, about 13, when all of this was happening, and everyone who lived in the "jail jays" (projects near my neighborhood) was heart broken and believed in NWA and the DOC. EVERYONE in Bakersfield was on NWA'a jock, but i loved Cube.
But it was so sad with a bunch of memorials for The DOC when it happened.

I honestly feel this movie should of been a trilogy. Part 1, NWA and how they formed ending with their break up. Part 2, all about their conflicts and how they went solo with their respective record labels such as death row, should include all the diss battles, as these diss videos were huge for hip hop at that time, the fights, all of that, ending with Eazy-E's death of Aids and how they all came together and put their differences aside. Part 3, pretty simple with Aftermath and how NWA has influenced and shaped rap artists of today, such as Eminem and 50 cents. Their so much more possibilities if they would of done it this way, but I do not think they thought the movies was going to be as successful as it is, I know they thought it would of been really good, but it has been the best hip hop biopic by far and all types of critics have loved it.

He's very knowledgeable and can do a good interview with good questions, but that same knowledge is also the thing that can make his interviews terrible... and he can be a kind of an instigator.

Yella has to be the most chill, laid back person on earth. It's like everything just flows off of him like water. The dude isn't trying to be hard at all. That is exactly how you should be when you are older. Right now, Yella seems like the suburban next door neighbor that you (or your dad, for you youngsters) have back yard BBQs with in the summer, while discussing what is the better grill, charcoal or propane.
It always wierds me out when Vlad has interviews with some old ass Gangsta from the '90s, and he is still acting like he will pull a drive by today at the drop of a hat like he is still a teenager. I keep thinking "Dude, you are 40 or 50 years old, you should have dropped that hard-ass gangsta shit about two decades ago."

I could sit and listen to Yella for hours. That's a good dude right there. For those of us that grew up in the era of the forming of nwa, we were fortunate. Even though it was some of the hardest, most negative music ever created, it was immensely monumental. Not to mention, way better than today's bullshit rap music. Brings back a lot of memories. Crazy shit

Beginning of factual street-life representation and possible source for social turnaround, with more vivid potential than that kinda sectarian, too smooth and unoffending, yet highly valuable conscious rap. Swing & missed -- due to grease balls, thrown by the industry.
A short timespan, before label CEOs threw X in the mix and said:
"Dance, and be bright and funny! Talk about elitist shit, like "striving for the top". Even though it'll coin you as sellouts, while churning out the devils lil' goodies to perfectly furnish juuust your own life. Then you go out and tell the masses they could be a star just like you, while trying not to laugh hysterically into their faces."

On "Pump it Up", Cube said something like "I'm having suckas a 100 miles and runnin... I'd like to say what's up to The D.O.C.", so obviously it was a response to NWA's diss. Then Cube jabbed them again on the movie Boyz n the Hood where Cube (Doughboy) and his boys stomped out the guy wearing the We Want Eazy t shirt. I remember this stuff like it was 20 something years ago :)
