      it's a great video showing how higher minimum wages absolutely destroy small businesses and help out the largest businesses by destroying the smaller competition, and also just how much the government makes it hard to run a business with crazy taxes and labor laws.

    • @FatBoyzAreUs
      @FatBoyzAreUs Před 3 lety +12

      @@tola6327 If you're going to point to raising minimum wage as an issue, and not even to point out to the fact that raising the floor for income has a linear progression effect on the price of goods and services around the nation (we will ignore this point, and just look at the EXACT example Rudy game). Ignoring all of this, if we raise the floor of labor costs what will happen is that we get some generally better quality employees. You can look at actual case study after case study of small businesses that experimented with this over the years (I've personally done 3 businesses in my local city as some case studies), and see that what happens when you RAISE the wages, you also RAISE the quality of employee.
      In Rudy's example, if he were hiring 2 part time employees at $7.25 (min wage in Florida), you'd see him with more than likely 2 low quality employees (be it their work ethics, effort, intelligence, age, etc.). Someone that needs to work to put food on the table for their family will NOT work for minimum wage at a location like this - what you will get instead is high school/college kids looking for part time work, or low intelligence employees that are unfortunate enough to not get much better elsewhere.
      Using Rudy's own words, there is an INVERSE effect of employee wage/labor costs vs theft. The reason he mentions this, and I'm sure he would agree, is that with hiring higher quality employees will lower the risk of theft, and this is the REAL business risks that you won't learn from college, books, or your choice of news information.

    • @tola6327
      @tola6327 Před 3 lety +3

      @@FatBoyzAreUs doesn't matter how amazing your employees are if you're paying them so much that you're destroying your already razor thin profit margins, as a tiny retailer selling standardized products, you can't just raise prices to cover for the increased cost, your customers will go elsewhere, reducing your shrink a bit isn't going to make up for the difference.

    • @godly111
      @godly111 Před 3 lety

      @@tola6327 The other end of things is if the market values its workforce and pays them more as a whole then people, as a whole, have more money and businesses make more money. The goal of an economy is to be balanced, where the demand is met by the supply. If the demand for services and products is stagnant because a large percentage (20% is large) are unable to buy non essential goods and services this is bad economics. Yes, you don't want everyone to be a millionaire, because then demand is crazy high, but the supply is crazy low. This would cause inflation and would be unbalanced as well.

    • @nekrataali
      @nekrataali Před 3 lety +4

      @@tola6327 If you cannot afford to pay your employees a living wage because it destroys your razor thin profit margins, you do not deserve to succeed as a retailer for a niche product. And if your employees are on minimum wage, they then qualify for government programs like Section 8 Housing or SNAP. You're asking the government to subsidize your small business because you won't fork over a reasonable income.
      But that doesn't matter because raising minimum wage has a positive effect on the overall economy as people making minimum wage have to spend their money immediately on survival, instead of hiding it away in an offshore bank account. More people spending money means more people making money. The idea raising minimum wage is somehow punishing to small business is a spook created by libertarian think tanks funded by the Kochs and Waltons. Higher wages means more disposable income, which is important for a niche market like trading cards.
      It's also really dumb to trust people making minimum wage to not do shady shit with your inventory that's easily transported, hidden, stolen, and sells for hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars. Do you want to get pissed off customers because your booster boxes are mapped? Because paying people $7.50 an hour and then handing them hundreds of dollars of easily tampered with merchandise is how you get pissed off customers from boxes that are mapped.

That person gets around 15 - 20 messages per 2 hour stream (daily stream) of people requesting information on how to buy directly from distributors. Since I am no store owner I can only imagine how much work you have to put in to break even. Did anybody else notice the giant impending cash flow problem with Timmy's Em? They are buying/selling $27,000 worth of product with only $45-50K in the bank... That means they only have enough cash to withstand less than two months of expenses (inventory is an expense Rudy didn't mention). This means they have to sell through EVERYTHING they buy every month in less than two months. Market crashes can come at any time, especially with how hot the market is when Timmy's Em opened. If their sales dive 50+% for a few months at a time, they are done. Many stores learning this the hard way recently. That's why a lot of people recommend to have 3-12 months of expenses in cash for emergencies like that to limit risk.

    I think the philosophy of opening a business in 2020 is the same as Rudy's Philosophy of buying vintage cards when they were down at the beginning of 2020. If you have a great business plan and a unique idea or if you are in the right location, now is a great time to open a business because competition has been cut tremendously. Is there risk? Yes. And higher than normal risk. People need to assess that risk and understand if the timing is still good. In person Brick in Mortar stores really need to assess that risk, especially in the US because of shut downs.

      The difference in the philosophy of buying RL cards and opening a business right now is there is much more market data on RL card price trends and the market data for new business opening is almost non-existent. Also if it's a bear market on RL cards it wouldn't matter because Rudy isn't selling and if you open a store and then get shut down from covid you are so far behind the 8-ball good luck getting around it.

But being special doesn’t pay the bills, it doesn’t pay the part timers, and it doesn’t convince the wife that this madness is worth it. Thanks and this is why I'll always "rip myself off" a little bit when I go to a local store. I'd be more sad if the local store wasn't around than if I didn't buy a few things I wanted because it was a few bucks more at the LGS.
    Brick and mortar will have to redefine itself and do multiple other things to move forward. e.g. If you have a large place and you're open during weekdays, consider renting out some of your space for startups so they don't have to overcommit to rent. Might not be a huge amount, but it could cover some of your expenses. (especially Monday through Thursday daytime where most LGS are like graveyards.)
    Ideally you can offer something that an online shop cannot. Make best use of the space! Buying singles will go far, but be more innovative. Might not be the dream of owning a LGS, but it's better than going broke.
