He was basically the perfect King. Which is a trick lol. All we know about him is from history books. History books are overly kind to Kings who are worshipped by their descendents like Aegon was. Daemon worships him.
It also helps that he burned to death almost everyone who opposed him, so any written records of the time would certainly be keeping that in mind
ehhh idk aerys and Aegon the IV are always mentioned as terrible rulers but other Targaryen kings like daeron and baelor are often loved by the people and the history books don't mention bad things about them (maybe except baelor, for all the locking his sisters in a tower lol)
@@santiagoqueijeiro389Baelor was a terrible king, it was Viserys II working as the Hand that kept things going.
He did however make peace with Dorne by returning the hostages and rescuing Aemon the Dragonknight, give him that.
Aegon ,like Augustus of Rome had a long period of peace within his kingdom (but not with Dorne). His declaration of rule meant that the six kingdoms no longer fought each other, and it stayed until the Dance of the Dragons, which Dorne mostly sat out.
@@SantomPh yes, there's no denying baelor made some questionable decisions and viserys was the one actually ruling, still, people often remember baelor with love
I hope HBO does a series on Aegon's Conquest
@@yujirohanmaisbestdadliterally
Personally, I don’t. His conquest is basically “aegon or one of his sisters flew here, killed everyone with dragons, then crowned someone as lord or whatever, then left”. Yeah, I know there is more to it than that, but the reason GOT was so good is that the action is quiet limited and it’s far more political. I dunno, personally I think I’d find it boring
@@sldarwin5615 You make a good point
Has GRRM wrote enough material on the life of Aegon?
NOOOOO!
I like the fan art that shows Henry Cavill as Aegon
Isn’t he too old
@@contextTBDToo old for the time of the conquering yes. Fitting age for the middle of his reign and outwards though
They need to cast a young actor for young Aegon and Cavill for old one, it work with Rhaneiyra in house of the dragon though 😊
I prefer Henry Cavill for BitterSteel
It's inaccurate tbh. Cavill is too bulky for a Targaryen
it always bothers me when people describe targaryen’s as lean/wiry when we have multiple examples that are described as powerful and larger than avg
Yeah: Maekar, Maegor, Aegon I, Aegor Rivers, along with Daemon Blackfyre and Maelys Blackfyre if we are also counting the Blackfyres.
This is probably because before house of the dragon the only onscreen male Targaryen we had that actually looked like a Targaryen was Viserys.
@@epsilon9739 exactly i just wanna see an aegon it doesn’t even need to be cavil but just a beefier dude who fits the mental image of a dragon lord
@dariusporter358 I mean the show did have brief visions of aerys and rhaegar but neither were exactly "built."
I’ll bet he more than once looked at Visenya across the dinner table and wished that it was her who had died in Dorne instead of Rhaenys, especially in the latter years of their marriage.
In fire and blood it is mentioned that Aegon married Rhaenys out of desire and Visenya out of duty so you have a point there
In fire and blood its suggested that he put her in charge of building the red keep because he didnt want to put up with her on dragonstone.
Visenya deserved better
@@jasmineg_63 she was a warrior... she knew her duties... being with Aegon was a duty... if it weren't she would have woo some other lord from a noble house
That’s a pretty horrible thing to wish for. Especially considering what Visenya did for him and the conquering.
There’s rumors that Rhaenys cheated on Aegon with singers and others she kept in her company. While there’s rumors that Visenya used sorcery to conceive/birth Maegor. Aenys ended up weak and spineless although some blame could be placed on Rhaenys dying while he was so young causing him to regress but his oldest son son Aegon the uncrowned was described as the spitting image of his grandfather.
I mean he could just look like Aegon because he's his grand uncle lol
@@rhiannongreen2642You don't get such identical appearances from grand uncles. It's more likely he's a descendant of aegon.
@brendanmuller7301 we're talking generations of incest and blood magic here, I think you could.
@@rhiannongreen2642 it’s interesting to think about the possibility of Aenys not being his but at the end of the day it doesn’t actually matter. Like you mentioned the Valyrian’s practiced incest and blood magic for generations and clearly that magic was passed down to Aenys and his heirs.
@@rhiannongreen2642 Don't care. I'm german. I'm always right.
“And they were roommates”
He seems like a pretty pragmatic person.
They need to make a "Histories of Westeros & Essos" show where its one episode per political event.
- Aegons conquest
- Roberts Rebellion
- Selmy saving Aerys
- Blackfyre rebellion
Theres so much content that can be faithfully made
And yet the realm has a problem following a Queen
Yeah u got a prob with that i'll willing to talk about it
There's never been another queen like Visenya, Rhaenys or Alysanne.
Ita actually interesting how little there is about Aegon in the canon material we have
Indeed, if they ever did a series on Aegon I there are a lot of angles or ways they could portray him without contradicting cannon. It would be a very interesting character to write for.
Anyone is charismatic and commanding while sitting on a dragon, and having two sisters commanding two others. He could have been played by Don Knotts (if he lived long enough) and it wouldn’t have changed his level of terror causing abilities.
are you being sarcastic
@@shipfel3084 He has a point lol. I'd be charismatic too if I was standing on what is the medieval equivalent of a nuke 😅
You’d be scary but not charismatic
Yeah I don’t think that’s accurate at all
He looked like Robert Baratheon. He would be imposing even without the dragons.
Augustus, Richard the lionheart and Edward l,lll, and the black prince 💯!
I do wish Targaryens would stop using the same names over and over again. It is the definition of insanity, expecting the same results from the same name, over and over again.
Researching them is an absolute nightmare.
The Aegon’s usually have numbers next to their names like I ,II, III 😂
How do you think historians feel with Englands 8 Henry's and 8 Edwards or France's 10 Charles or 19 Louis'.
@@galutproctar11145w Luckily they have some benchmark to work from.
King Louis the 16th was the last one so they can kind of work backwards.
King Henry the 8th split the Church and divorced many times.
Most Targaryen Kings just sat there and didn’t do anything major so tracking them is difficult.
@@Chernobyl_Reactor4 Before Louis 16, many Louises also didn't do anything prominent.
@@Chernobyl_Reactor4not really Aegon the unworthy is based on Henry the 8th and Aegon the unlikely is based on Edward the confessor, most of the aegons have a name to go with whatever shenanigans that happened with them. Aegon the conqueror is also based on William the conqueror so yes the Aegons were unique.

What is the semi-canon source that mentions Aegon following following the Faith of the 7 for political reasons?
I wouldn't say semi cannon that is cannon. What we don't know is whether he thought it was total bullshit and how much of it is fluffed up by Maesters
He was smart and thats what a smart king would do
It comes from Fire and Blood which isn't really semi-canon but it is intended to be a baised account of Targaryen history from an unreliable narrator. In Fire and Blood it's said that while Aegon accepted the Seven Gods as his own that he didn't bother to get knighted and never participated in any religious activities of the Seven; he never even built a sept within the Aegonfort or on Dragonstone. It's thought that he converted for political reasons and held the gods of Old Valyria in private.
@@galutproctar11145w I thought the Old Valyrians were atheists because they thought of themselves as gods.
@matroV no they had Gods. In fact rhaenyra's dragon syrax is named after a valyrian god.
Need a show about Ageon now
In the HOTD we learned that he was driven by a noble mission that no one knew to protect the world when the time comes
That is HBO bs.. it's never mentioned in the books
@@djole93podbara GRRM works on HOTD project so i think he gave a greenlight
@@djole93podbaraYet. Not mentioned in the books yet. For all we know the next book could reveal that Aegon was Jesus Christ reborn. Truth is, the reason why Aegon conquered tried to conquer all of Westeros is unknown. He very well could have had visions of the Long Night returning and believed it would be in the realm's best interests to unite them under one crown. George often makes plot points whose true scope and stakes are revealed at a later time. Don't just write it off because "Hng ShOw CaNoN bAd HNG!"
@@dakotawernsman3709 yes we don't know why he invaded, but imo that reason is kinda dumb. We probably won't read the ending of the books anyway so ..
@@djole93podbara It wouldn't be dumb if he believed such a threat would spread to the entire world. Let's imagine if the Long Night consumed all of Westeros: How long do you think it would take for the Others, who possess knowledge of how armor and weapons(technology) works, to spread to the rest of the world? It's not out of the realm of possibility that, if the Others made wights of all the people of Westeros, that they would be able to take it a step further and consume other parts of the world. That's why I think he MIGHT have been trying to unite the Kingdoms, because he realized the sheer magnitude of "we are fucked" that the Others represent.
It’s sad that he was faithful to his sisters but one cheated and the other he didn’t really have a romantic relationship with
Who of them cheated?
He was probably sterile and he knew that. So he adopted Aenys as his own because he had already burned thousands of people for his throne and now he did not have someone to succeded him. Guy must have felt like an idiot.

If we were to continue into his actual reign, we'd be stuck with the whole "eternal 40-year-old Matt Daemon with different haircuts" situation again. I thought before reading the description he’d be like Alfred the Great small and not physically terrifying but a brilliant mind
Chris Hemsworth is who I've imagined as Aegon, but Henry Cavill is the Rhaegar in my mind 😊😊😊
Great vid! You never hear much, personally, about him
Aegon is the perfect king of westeros 10/10.He was kind to his subjects and cruel to his enemies as always a king should (A king is not meant to be a saint he is the protector of his people and lands. So he should treat anyone who wants to end him or capture his people and land cruelly. And as a conqueror he must be cold hearted. That's what king is).
I actually did not know. Very cool.
If they ever made a series/movie about his conquest, I would not be surprised if he was actually incredibly PASSIVE. And it was his sisters pushing him to get shit done. Rhaenys provided the carrot, Visenya the stick. I just get the impression of big sister Visenya being a real drill sergeant. Bossing everyone around since they were kids. He very obviously avoided her, towards the end of his life.
Aenys got the charisma, Maegor the strength. If only Aegon paid more attention to raising them as brothers
They were King and Hand of the King until the Faith came between them.
Can you do the ibbenese next 😊
"Jon Snow: *I AM A KING"*
he didn't care about being king ... only cared about saving westeros from the enemy beyond the wall
I can see Henry Cavill playing Aegon The Conquorer if they ever bring out his rule on tv
Faithful to his sisters
He reminds me, of myself.
whats the background music called ?
Think it may have helped he had balerion the black dread as his dragon
Let governance to his sisters i don't think so they likely helped him rule better and wiser but don't think he didn't do his administrative duties he integrated the seven/six kingdoms during his rule
I feel like his character is similar to if Jaimie Lannister w a dragon
Sad how the descendants of his only friends/ brother ended up destroying his descendants.
To be fair, they were also Aegon I's descendants (through a daughter of Aegon V) so there is that

He’s too big and old for Aegon and too calm for Maegor or Bobby B.

These comments are interesting.
Some say he's too perfect, and viewed favorably likely cause he "killed those who would speak against him" or "he's seen as good/cool by many lords who outright bent the knee, so they'd paint a good, bias picture of him.
To that I say, it depends;
Jaehaerys made a few mistakes and we see almost his whole life well documented, and you can only hide so much about a King who's decision made such massive changes to an entire Continent.
As for those writing the history book, Oldtown was left alone and the Maesters were free to write up all they needed.... and those are the people who had to save Westeros from Valyrian invasion by wiping out Old Valyria via their scheme to kick off the Doom. So, who if not them would've been greatly biased against him? And yet... they don't see him as a terrible guy. (Not all Maesters are a hive mind either, to be fair)
Nor was he a liar, he kept his promise of letting those who bent the knee keep their titles. He would've killed the last Lannister King if he was as dark/not good like so many say or claim.
People like Aegon or Jaehaerys are seen as "not actually that good a person" cause it seems many people want to always see or believe the worst in people. People are always "oh, he was a great, solid king/ruler? Well no, actually he was a terrible person, yada yada yada".
I feel that the contrarian thought process regarding kings like them either stems from, I dunno, jealousy or unwillingness to believe that mostly upstanding people do in fact exist.
Why are all the comments here doubting Aegon's known life to those who saw/viewed him wasn't altered? Yeah, Aegon did unleash much pain on Dorne, he's not a saint, and he was overall a Conqueror, which has its own moral compass, but people wanna be so "different/special" so badly they just wanna get the chance to say "nah, Aegon/Jaehaerys are too perfect or often reasonable, that simply CAN'T be true". And I'm like... bro what? 😅 Jaehaerys is the kind of ruler many nations could use right about now, just saying guys.
Jaehaerys was not that good a ruler. Sure he built roads probs to him. But good queen alysanne was the real machine behind his reign as well as his hand septon Barth.

Why don't you, I don't know, find and cast a younger actor that fits to play the role instead of relying on the same big names again and again? That's some bizarre celebrity worship here.
