One of the greatest matches in CTWC history! With commentary by James Chen and Chris Tang.
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry

I remember the day Jonas passed away. Joseph broke down crying on his Twitch live-stream on that day. Joseph seriously admired Jonas and was probably a role model as well that motivated Joseph to be the best. Joseph is now a 2-time champion. He won in 2019, and of course 2018 against Jonas.
I don't think there is a pro tetris player who doesn't admire Jonas as a competitive player. I never played tetris myself, only watched Jonas over the years but i feel very heavy, knowing that Jonas will never play another final
😢😢😢
I still remember reading Heathers Message that day... He's such a nice person :)
Wait do you know where that live stream is?
i remember that stream, it broke my heart
I constantly come back to this. I feel Joseph became the champion at exactly the right time before Jonas passed away. Jonas left the championship title to the new generation, and what better way than with a 16 year old kid.
Neubauer did a sensational career with CTWC. Of course all of us wanted to keep this seven-time world champion more longer with us, but unfortunately life is sometimes very crude. But remember, Jonas left behind a huge legacy. His attitude, his kindness, and his spirit is the major things that everyone, who keeps himself/herself a good Tetris player, should take an example from Jonas, that's the way to do it. Rest in peace, legend, may you won an every Tetris battle above the clouds!

I honestly truly believe that this Championship and this game in particular brought the tetris community to where it is now. The two announcers unexpectedly hooking us in in 2016/2017. Jonas being such an impressive player and gracious champion. Joseph the new kid coming onto the scene with a new technique being able to completely sweep him, opening the door to new metas and really proving to a whole generation that they can participate and win too? It was truly awesome moment in Tetris history and I honestly believe it caused a resurgence and rebirth in the game’s popularity, that the tetris community as it exists today wouldn’t exist with Jonas Joseph and our amazing World Championship announcers
Thank you all for everything you’ve done
Fly high Jonas

To see Joseph so overcome by emotion, and to see how graceful and supportive Jonas was of his opponent, it’s just so wholesome
Honestly, I rewatch this video from time to time just to be reminded how humans can be competitive in a way that brings them together
Jonas is salty tho. You can see it
DonaytiYT
and the speakers speak so highly of Jonas complementing him while not much of joseth who is young and skilled as hell
and new there.
Tetris community - best community?
DonaytiYT he was salty about his play, if you catch his streams you can see how passionate he is about seeing new blood take the stage
Still here. Still watching. RIP Jonas. What a fucking legend. :(
What's fascinating about this to me is how much higher the skill level is now on top. The techniques that the younger players are using now just blow away the old style that Jonas is using. It's nuts how easily they transition into the 30s now, versus 5 years ago. The "kill screen" is no longer the kill screen with some of these younger players.
Came here looking for this comment. If only Jonas were still around to learn rolling (thus be able to play levels 30+) to couple with his excellent stacking skills! It would've be so interesting to see. Jonas rlly tends to score better in levels until a little over 20.
How anime protagonist be only 16 year old defeating a 30year old villian who had 20 years of experience

bro i'm telling you i was thinking the same thing this is like a tetris anime and joseph the MC who studied the best then in his tournament arc beat the some of best player as he goes further then reaches the main boss and beat him all in his first year fucking crazy.
The 16 year old doesn't have all the things to remember, do and whatever in his live at that age then a adult have and thus are better on these things so its a surprise Jonas have got this far anyway but hes a pro so..

Look at Jonas in game 3, as soon as he tops out he's incredebly mad, mad at himself for failing at playing as good as he could... and than he looks at Joseph's screen and he starts smiling, he's not worried that the guy will or not win the game, it doesn't make a difference anymore because he was mad about his bad playing, not about the title.
He smiles because Joseph is playing incredible tetris, aggressive and not safe in any way, just going for it, never taking compromises with triples, risking it all.
He smiles because he's seeing someone who's extremely good, and he admires him.
That's sportsmanship.
Yeah, he knows in that moment that his reign is over, but that losing to Joseph is a good way to go.
I mean, it's inevitable. Aging is a thing, reaction times get slower...
