In 2019, ESPN 2 invited CTWC to produce a segment for "The Ocho." It was a watershed moment for Classic Tetris, bringing in thousands of new fans through a major cable network appearance. This is the segment that was produced as it originally aired, split into three parts.
We realize most of this is game tape that has already appeared on our channel. However, there has been a ton of demand to see the segment from those in the community who did not have access to ESPN 2. So here it is for all those who are curious about the first Tetris tournament seen on national television!

In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry

It's crazy, JD has gotten so much better since then
I was watching and thinking the same, it's crazy how much more efficient he is along with a lot of other players now
in these 2 years i've seen a lot of "new" players show up with skills equal or even better than what joseph is showing here (which are already astronomical btw). Tetris skill has increased so much since the ctwc became this big event (and it's still growing a lot every year). these young guns are the future of competitive tetris. i love jonas, he's like the sensei that has all the knowledge of tetris but doesn't have the speed of his students. if he's going to win it one more time, it has to be this year. players are just getting too fast and too good
@@rainbowman2505 yeah and not just too fast. ive seen some of them like joseph with high 600k to 700k pre transition on lvl 18 and 'maxing' out at lvl 23 or 24, so the hypertappers don't even have to hypertap. they're also just really good at stacking too at this point.
@@rainbowman2505 Joseph sets a new world record like every week. In the last week he got the first level 35 ever and very nearly missed 1.4 mil. Dude got over 100k points post-kill screen. I think he's going to have a good shot at winning for a long time to come as long as he keeps playing.
Back then, it was an amazing game for Joseph if he maxed out. Now, it's a disappointing game if he doesn't.
First 3 minutes did a great intro to CTWC
1:45 we have the answer guys, it's his sister !
Definitely the reason why he's got so much luck and skill
can we get her instagram or anything? shes hot
@@choibao3663 Go to horny jail, bonk!
I don't care how many times I watch this tourney. It always excites me each time.
ESPN The Ocho, thought this was clickbait 😂
Awesomeness 😮😮😮
I love how the crowd gets excited because of a spin that Joseph can casually do now
Hahaha people used to think most burns were pretty advanced
Holy molly the production value is through the roof
1:25 and now he's reached level 35
this is awesome!!! I've already watched this, but I'm going to watch this version!!!
The Ben Simmons joke had me dead.
Remember when ESPN 2 used to always be called "The Deuce" and had mostly extreme sports and Pro Beach Hockey and World's Strongest Man and such?
Found the incel again! Must be fate.
espn2 being called the deuce is why 8 is called the ocho
0:48 BOOM!! Tetris for Jeff
Cute as hell ! The kid too !
5:09 At that time, almost everyone might think joseph will lose to koryan after 120k gap score. But no one knows how good he can play after transition. This match always make me excited to watch even i already knew the result. 👍👍
always good matches on here
This is hype
yea. this is good
...meanwhile, there's me fortunate if I even get to Level 4. Wow! What a battle!
Everyone in my house:
Me:''BOOOOOOMMM TETRIS FOR JOSEPH''
joseph was so nervous the entire match, and so was I even though I ahd already seen it xd
AWESOME! Joseph for the win BUT Koryan deserves a championship. I'm really hoping he will get one soon.
Nice
Idk how i feel about ESPN covering esports if they can adapt and make it entertaining on top of the gameplay then it could be enjoyable
👍👍👍👍
なんで持ち方がどっちも独特なの?
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucooooooooooooooo
the year I found out Koryan is not Korean
1:52 for the asian hbb.
Wow....the sister is gorgeous...
He does indeed hold many records.
Bruhhh yall deadass
Such a shame no man has come to claim her as their trophy
First to hit level 32?! I guess they just misspoke and meant first to level 35...
Its 2018's video
But level 35 is displayed as level 32, so in a way they're still correct!
Josef has a 🔥 mom.
