26:06 My personal history with NES Tetris
    28:28 Thanking sources
*Small correction to this segment (thanks to Nocturn for pointing this out) - to keep DAS charged, you press the direction for the next piece in a 10 frame window /before/ it enters the screen, not right as it enters the screen. An incredibly difficult move regardless and impressive for players to pull it off consistently with nearly every piece in tournament!

normally I'd never comment on youtube videos, but with this video I'll make an exception.
I started watching the CTWC about 2 years ago, just after the 2016 tournament and instantly became hooked to it. I was so excited about it that I immediately started showing it in the living room of my studenthouse and to my friends. Like you said, at first they were a bit annoyed/surprised by it, but when time moved on and I started watching it more, they were starting to get intrigued by it and also started watching it. Now every year it's always a big hype at the end of oktober between me and my friends who is going to be the new champion.
We're living in the Netherlands, so the tournament is always in the night (9 hour time difference), but that won't stop me / us from watching this amazing tournament. Maybe when I'm earning a little bit more money, I'll fly to Portland for a weekend.
2018 was an awesome tournament (too bad I started watching it live from the top 16, so no idea if you qualified). It featured a whole program trey developed with lots of interesting new data. I'd love it if you could make a video about how the new program works, because for me it took me quite some time to figure it out. The presentators helped me out quite a bit
After two years of watching the game a lot of terms became clear to me, but your video explained it even a level further in an excellent way. Thank you for this! For now i'm just going to spam everyone I showed tetris to this video, because it is really great, keep up the good work!
    p.s.
Harry Hong is not pressing down anymore, he took over jonas' tactic, he kept on hypertapping though.

I’m currently on lvl 4,038,045,863,746 with 7 quadrillion lines however I don’t know how many points I have since I maxed out four days after the game was released (I know I know I’m a late bloomer)
You’re probably wondering how I’m typing this as I play. Well after the lightning strike and 🐍 bite I was also given the ability to use other peoples bodies to multitask and buy large amounts of sour patch kids and hot pockets to bring my body that’s playing Tetris so that I maintain my brains undying need for sugar and fat to keep me sustained

Qualifiers for the CTWC finals are also held in select retro gaming conventions around the US where the winners will be sponsored by the convention and flown to Portland to compete in the tournament. More qualifiers are popping up but this past year, Retro City Festival in Pomona, Ca held the west cost qualifier,
Let’s Play Expo in Irving, Tx held the southern qualifier,
Game On Expo in Phoenix Az hosted the Desert Qualifier,
Tecmo Madison in Madison, Wi held the Midwest qualifier, and Replay FX in Pittsburgh, Pa hosted the East Coast Qualifier.

I really relate to the part where you talk about your own experience! Watching hours and hours of a game, understanding all of the hip lingo, and understanding strategies does nothing for you if you don't play. It gets a lot of people down, but they have the tools! They know what to do, they just need the muscle memory to do so. Like, a big problem in the guitar/clone hero community is that everyone wants to go on expert and FC ttfaf like the streamers, but let's be real, if you haven't played in years, you'll be lucky to get a 4 star on slow ride. Sure it feels lame playing on easy, or level 0, or whatever, but we all gotta start playing or else we'll never get good.

I watched it for a laugh at first but then was getting recommended more vids over the months and kept watching here and there. In the last month I have now subscribed to classic tetris and look forward to watching the rest of the 2018 championships. I believe the information in this video will enhance my enjoyment of the game and tournament going forward, thank you (PS I also want to pick up a classic nintendo and practice some tetris on there, I am confident I will be able to perform hyper-tapping but I will need to flip my controller upside down to do it)

I'm only 4 minutes into the video but I must say: I found those Tetris championship videos some months ago and I've been gradually obsessing with them to the point that, when the 2018 tournament happened the other weekend, I had been anticipating it for about two weeks and I couldn't wait to spend the whole weekend glued to the live streaming of it -none of my friends understood why I was so excited or why did I have such a great weekend just watching the tournament. It is also odd because I usually don't watch or enjoy sports/e-sports.
Also, I'm from Spain and I couldn't believe that the week after that Jonas was trending in Twitter because some publication had erroneously stated that he was a 60 year old man from Albacete.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience before I continue watching this video, in case I forgot to do so once I finish it. I'm loving the first four minutes, I'm already learning new things, and I've already pressed the subscribe button. God job man :)

This is a very good video. I was one of the many people who first got in touch because of the famous 2016 final video and instantly fell in love with the CTWC. What I like most about the CTWC is the participant field. So many cool people full of character and diversity. And this is actually what kinda displeased me about the ctwc 2018. Don't get me wrong, Joseph played some very impressive tetris and his win is totally deserved, but i fear that the bitter truth is that in the present time some e sport affine youngsters could easily replace all those promiment people playing tetris for decades if they decide to go for classic tetris instead of idk starcraft or LoL...

That may be an issue if the prize pool gets really big and a lot of people come only for the money, or if new people are unpleasant in general. So far I haven't seen that happen though. Joseph and Greentea, who I think were the 2 youngest competitors this year, absolutely wowed the crowd both with skill and with heart. Many of the "old guard" players I talked to recognized that the field was so competitive now that it would be hard to get very far anymore, but they all loved the fact that it was so international now and that the level of play was increasing. One player who had competed for years and went out in the round of 16 told me, "That was an incredible show! And I saw it for free! I would have paid 100 bucks to see that." I didn't really hear from anyone that they weren't interested in competing next year, rather it just made them more excited!
