A 1989 TETRIS Expert Plays TETRIS EFFECT for the First Time

- I asked Trey Harrison, one of the best Tetris players in the world, to take a stab at TETRIS EFFECT, the psychedelic new Tetris game from Rez and Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi - in pursuit of the coveted "DECAHEXATRIS."

Before you ask "What did Trey think of TETRIS EFFECT?" or "Why does he play SO SLOW?", here's a second video where we answer those questions. Enjoy! czcams.com/video/0j_fp5L8Si8/video.html
This is the kind of thing that games journalism SHOULD be. Great work mate. Keep making vids on topics you're interested in.
it was the first time he was playing with a diferent controller than the nes, so he had to play to get good and stuff. but then he played in the vr version and he did a tetris made of 12 erased lines. he thought it was great.
What about Blockout 1989 in VR I would buy VR just for that!!!!!!
i have a question, have you ever made anything with your hands or preformed with an instrument? because that is another way to get that flow state you were talking about and i wonder if that mentality is more prevalent among some people causing them to be better puzzelers or musicians?

Giant fan of VR (on PC for years), 100% it was only the latency due to their TV likely not being optimal for gaming (or outside game mode) and the profi player being used to playing the NES version likely on a CRT. But the player even directly said it was the latency so Nick saying the immersion played a role seems made up to fit the theme.
I love how in 7:21 you can see how he hesitates to use the l to form a tetris, and decides to go all in for decahexatris
true. the foresight and planning is something to behold. Also (less related) nice timestamp, I appreciate it when people back it up a second or two for context
For a fast player ( 80 dpm+ ) that shouldve been a zone start and easily a potential Ultimatris, but for someone just starting on the game its impressive, specially since the leap from classic to modern can be confusing.

That “flow state” is really fucking crazy. I’ve only had while playing Tetris. When it happens to me it’s like an athlete that is in the “zone”. You just start playing without thinking and it feels like there is nothing else other then the game. It’s a really crazy feeling.
... ITS CUZ ITS THE SAME THING, flow state is the real term, it was discovered in musictians, who would enter a state of hyperfocus, it requires (for consistant) being highly skilled at the thing, and also
Fighting harder "enemies"
I’ve done that before when playing my guitar or banjo. I get to a point where I play without any thought to what I’m doing

That “zone” feeling you’re speaking of is amazing with this game. Best soundtrack gameplay integration I’ve ever experienced during any video game. If you don’t have a quality set of speakers or better yet headphones while playing this game you’re sorely missing out.
Connected Forever IS the theme song to Tetric Effect for me, and to hear this guy say "I've never heard something like this" while its playing and he's doing the decahexatris its magical.
I believe it's one of the dude's in the room talking about the sounds the game was making while in the "zone" because he was doing so well, not referring to the music, no?
@@BIG_PASTA I belive you are right.
My theory is that he performed better with vr because you can't see anything else other thn the game. Less pressure & more focus is the result.
Very likely. The entire premise of vr is more imersion, through many manners: sound, low latency, etc.
@MrBlueD3V1L I got it for Oculus quest and eventhough I can't do the "everything has it's place and you instantly game over once you mess up once" method I became quite good at since the blocks don't have different colors, I have become way better at "spontaneous" gameplay
That's probably is part of it, but latency is actually pretty important in tetris
Yeah, they were talking bs like he was speedrunning or something. Speaking about "Low latency" etc etc it was a "Sublimnal promotion about the VR and the game.
@@ThiagoMnab low latency is REALLY important in NES Tetris, which is probably why he noticed that. They can’t even play on newer TVs in NES Tetris, they HAVE to use old CRT TVs to play a lot of the higher levels.

I wanna share something:
When I was a teenager, I used to play a specific Tetris version called "Tetris Cascade" (2003) on my Motorola flip phone. It's basically Tetris with gravity. So if you would have hole below your soon-to-be-cleared line and a tetrimino placed above said line, it can fall into that hole after clearing and create another finished line. That way I could do 12 lines in one go. Very satisfying. Also I would do symmetric builds with a lot of those fall-in-holes up till the top of the window, and then activate that cascade. Oddly satisfying to watch the tetriminoes fall symmetrically until everything got cleared till the bottom.
I loved that so much. More than classic Tetris. I still have the software copy on my PC but nothing to run it on.
I miss it to this day.

After playing a single version of tetris for 30 years many people would have had nothing but petty criticism for every aspect of the new game that defied their expectations or put them outside of their comfort zone. Watching the world's greatest player pick up a completely foreign controller, rapidly adapt and proceed to eagerly flog those blocks out of existence is both a testament to his freakish talent and love for the game as well as the stunning execution of design realized by the games developers. You've done a beautiful thing by introducing the classic tetris champ to the next generation of the game he loves so much. Actually the origin of the word of course as many others is greek. Im greek and i could understand without explanation. It means 16 (δεκαεξι /sixteen). Deca-Δεκα-ten -> hexa-εξι-six -> tris is just a pun from tetris. Tetris also a greek word. Tetris/Τετρας/four of somthing or four sides or four pieces. Cause all the pieces of tetris are squares with 4 sides and combined from four square pieces,
