  • If you haven’t seen it already, the Tetris Effect Trailer that Playstation dropped back in June is one of the most moving advertisements in a long time. It mentions a study about amnesiacs who can’t form new memories, and how they dreamed of playing Tetris hours and even days later. So today on Psych of Play, were going to take a look at that study and what is actually going on.

    Welcome to Daryl Talks Games
    Hi! I’m Daryl, and on this channel I explore the intersection between video games, psychology, and real life.
    I’ve talked about how Pokemon and the Generation Effect can make you a better student. I’ve made a video on why game developers really should understand functional fixedness. And I’ve interviewed some of the best speedrunners on Earth to find out how exactly they make setting world records look so easy.
    Primacy and Recency, subconscious associations, classical conditioning, divergent thinking, amnesia (the disorder not the game), if its psychological concept that relates to games, I’ve probably talked about it before or will in the future. But to be clear, psychology isn’t all I talk about. Every now and then I’ll dabble in a little bit of game design and sometimes I’ll just talk about life and how games really can make it better... and for some people are the best way to relate to the world around us.
    So if all that sounds like a good time to you, subscribe to my channel, watch my videos, and if you feel so inclined, show a friend! If you take a look at my videos, I truly hope that you learn something or are entertained and that your day is better after watching!

    This is also why it's commonly believed that when learning a language, "full immersion" is often seen as the most effective method of learning. By constantly surrounding yourself with a language you don't know, especially without any aid about what is going on, your brain will find it necessary to start "practicing" in subconsciously.

    Hi, I'm someone who suffers from memory issues. And how you described it matched perfectly to my experience. I can recognize stuff just fine (usually), or be reminded of things (sometimes), but trying to explicitly recall something always results in failure, especially if it was recent. Lots of repetitions usually helps make things stick in my mind better and improves my recognition, which then fades as I don't interact with things. Emotional stuff and motor skills are largely unimpaired (I still have a few fond memories of my past, but they're few and far between).
    I don't have any dreams whatsoever, and no it's not just forgetting them. I just lack any such experience (skipping over the night, rather than experiencing a dream and then forgetting afterwards).
    I wouldn't say I'm an amnesiac since I *can* remember some stuff, especially with *lots* of repetition and consistently appearing. But if I don't talk to someone for a week or so, there's a good chance I'll forget them entirely.
    It's very weird to watch things that I've seen before, but forgot I've seen. There's this weird feeling of "oh yeah I remember this" but not actually remembering it. And that feeling really makes going back and playing older games, or remakes of older games an absolute joy.
    This video was really neat to watch. Thanks :)

      Hi, I also have memory problems! My memories of my past are not very complete, with just a few things sticking out to me (mostly times I was extremely scared). I have troubles in explicit recollection of memories, but sometimes if I'm directly reminded of something my brain will begin filling in the blanks. I don't memorise names or faces at all which is fun.

    Really enjoyed the video! It went in a whole other direction than I anticipated but makes me curious if we could eventually induce these “learning dreams” If we could harness these dreams and that state of not focusing but being above peak performance you mentioned in your speedrunning video any human could increase efficiency exponentially, which is just fun to think about. Anyway great video!

    • @DarylTalksGames
      @DarylTalksGames  Před 5 lety +17

      Thanks my dude! I don't know that it's something we could ever induce in anyone, but I do think this type of thing happening is only natural whenever someone pours hours of practice into something . I think the brain eventually just makes its own agenda on something when its put through enough repetition, you know?

    • @EtraGames
      @EtraGames Před 5 lety +9

      Daryl Talks Games Possibly. Which makes me wonder someone in a class is doing hours of math a day. Will their grade improve if they dream about math? And if they’re doing math for hours why aren’t they dreaming about it to begin with? Is it just not engaging enough? What I’m wondering is can these dreams only be brought by games? It’s a crazy leap But I’m just wondering why many people people don’t dream about school but a decent percentage of people in this study dreamed about Tetris? Just a thought.

    • @DarylTalksGames
      @DarylTalksGames  Před 5 lety +10

      Its a solid question honestly. In the study, Stickgold kinda summed up that the dreaming only happened after the brain decided "okay this is actually something we need to get better at", like it only does it once it "matters". But of course not all the subjects actually recalled having the dreams, so there may be an emotional factor to it as well. Like I dream about golf a lot because I love it and -want- to get good at it, but I never dream about my day job even though I'm running reports for it on a daily basis.
      Another thing that could affect it is that we don't always remember our dreams. So the student learning math could be dreaming about math a ton, but not actually recall it. I think we only recall about 10% of our dreams about an hour after waking up, so it's honestly hard to quantify haha. But I definitely don't think its exclusive to games, as amazing as that would be.

    • @EtraGames
      @EtraGames Před 5 lety +7

      @@DarylTalksGames Yeah the exclusive to games is a giant stretch. I'm kind of more trying to draw light to the fact that more engaging things we MAY dream about more??? Really liked the insight about only remembering 10% of dreams! Thanks for the discussion!

    • @tetraedri_1834
      @tetraedri_1834 Před 4 lety +8

      @@EtraGames Actually, in high school I noticed that I was able to recall topics later much easier if I rehearsed them right before sleep, opposed to earlier in the day/evening. I somehow was trying to tune my subcontious into the topics I wanted to learn before going to sleep, and I feel like it really did help me -- I needed to spend much less time studying than before. So at least for my personal experience, I'd say you can train yourself to exploit your sleep to learn stuff, even if you cannot recall your dreams later on.
      Of course this is only anecdotal evidence, not a scientific experiment. Neverheless, give it a try if you like!

    i remember vaguely, the year I had depression while also being obsessed with getting better at Smash4. I noted that I never had dreams, but also remember lots of times in french class where I said to myself I would rather be at home playing smash right now. I remember at least once where I consciously daydreamed about a new combo idea. it ended up working because I knew the frame data for some moves and could guess the frame data for the other moves based on how long I remember them all taking in different situations. The first time I honestly felt this effect in play was about 5 years ago. I was playing a new piece on the piano on summer break, and I was absolutely stumped by it. After trying to play it for half an hour, with little to no improvement, I flopped to my bed out of annoyance, and fell asleep.
    After a few hours i woke up, and felt like giving the piece another shot. To my surprise, suddenly all the things that gave me so much trouble just, clicked, inside my head, and I managed to get over that hump.
    Since then, I was very much aware of this effect, as I noticed a big improvment in my play whenever i was stuck on something, and went to sleep right after. It actually got me pretty motivated, as I knew that even if i hit a slump, and feel like im making no progress, my brain might sort it all out in the end while i go to sleep, so no effort is "wasted".

    I legit learned how to skate vert and mini ramps from dreams. I'm mostly skilled at street skateboarding. The few times I went to skateboard parks with ramps ended with some bad injuries. I just couldn't anticipate or get used to the sudden speed changes and inverted angles of performing tricks that come from ramp skateboarding. Then I had a whole week of realistic dreams where I was ramp skating far in excess of my abilities. A weeks worth of similar dreams is weird enough. But these dreams were indistinguishable from reality, I felt everything I was doing. On the hunch that this was significant I went to a skatepark just to see if my inkling was valid. And sure enough it was like I advanced 2 years in skating ramp experience. I could barely rock to fakie on a mini ramp after dropping in and now I could almost air out of vert on halfpipes and had no problem throwing my bag of tricks on vert too. I could pump so much better I easily drop down a pyramid and ollied off a funbox over the rail to flat. It was nuts.

    Came to this channel on a whim. I have observed dreams and learned how to interpret them without all the mystical crap, because I figured out how to understand people's dream states from an emotional standpoint. I also know about the Tetris effect, as I have gotten it doing many things from gaming to watching TV shows. I can say that just doing something for an extended period of time will not create the Tetris effect. If you want to induce Tetris effect, the something you are doing has to have your undivided attention. You cannot be daydreaming and playing Tetris at the same time half-assed etc. You have to only think about Tetris, and get emotionally invested into it.
    Another thing people don't talk about (or know about imo), is that it works in reverse too, via lucid dreaming. If you do something in a dream over and over, the information you learned can transfer into real life. But what's better, is that lucid dreams can be used to influence emotional and mental states on top of physical ones. Such as confronting your "Depression" in a Lucid dream, can create more positive emotions/letting go of things that are negative.

    I've recently started having many dreams of the code I'm working on, at the same time as I've started programming multiple hours a day, every day. I wasn't paying too much attention to it, but now even my nightmares can be of me just... programming... something similar to what i program in my waking hours, but not anything concretely. I don't think I'm seeing the exact problem I'm dealing with (last night was about a problem I had actually already solved, I think), and I've never had the "I wake up, and I know the solution!" thing that the kid said, but often I've found that I'll be frustrated with something one day, and then the next when I start programming I'll kinda know a few different solutions I want to try, even though I don't know exactly when I think of them.

    When I first and intensely started playing with a rubiks cube, the pattern recognition and 3 dimensional puzzle solving was very exhausting on my brain, both short term memory and processing. When I closed my eyes after 2 hours, I still saw that cube in my mind, almost on the inside of my eyelids, constantly turning to solve one side to the next, always scrambling the others in the process. It was actually very uncomfortable, almost painfull, not being able to shut it off.
    I also played this game called gridwars 2 (czcams.com/video/Ch-Fbdbd7is/video.html&t), with its neon colored geometrical shapes over that deep black background. You move the player shuttle with the arrow keys, trying to dodge and flee the randomly floating or homeing enemies by moving it around the screen, while at the same time shooting in the direction you point with the mouse independantly. It calls on periferal vision, spacial awareness, and multitasking, which can also be very exhausting. After a while one developes some sort of tunnel vision, no longer focusing on the player shuttle, cursor position, or even the stuff chasing you, nor planing the next move, but on the whole picture and the momentary state. The reactionary part of the brain takes over and it becomes a very zen experience. But similar to the rubics cube, when I closed my eyes and went to sleep, I still saw those glowing neon shapes flying around in my head in front of my eyes, lingering for a long time.

    • @dimuslv
      @dimuslv Před 3 lety

      Wow, I've also had a similar experience, also with a Rubik's cube - not learning how to solve it, though, instead trying to come up with an interesting pattern that could be made on a 4x4x4. When I slept after a long period of unsuccessful tries, in my dream I had this uncomfortable, seemingly dragging-on-for-a-very-long-time experience of trying to do something with the cube, but always being very confused and fuzzy about what I was doing, just feeling uncomfortable of a problem that I try to solve but that just never actually makes sense. Waking up from similar experiences also felt weird, I kept feeling fuzzy and confused but also following some very weird logic for some time, until I slowly start to understand that the real word is not like that and everything actually makes comfortable sense.

    Great vid! I am a machinist and have lots of stress dreams trying to debug code. They are anxiety inducing loops and no matter if I wake up or try and think about something else I still fall back into the same stressful loop. I was trying to learn arduino code yesterday and had a terrible Tetris like dream loop about it last night.

    This is a great deal like muscle memory. If you have ever driven the same route over and over as a delivery driver, you know know that you dont have to think about the next turn, or memorize the route, you can rely on muscle memory.

  • @oMuStiiA
    @oMuStiiA Před 3 měsíci

    There's a manga I've read in the past that actually encorporates this concept a lot. In Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles one of the main characters has her memories stolen and scattered across many universes. It takes a lot of power to travel between universes, so the second main character, who wants to save her and return her memories, is forced to pay a great price in order to gain the ability to travel between them. That price is that she will never regain any of her memories of him, and that proves true throughout the rest of the entire series iirc. She doesn't get those memories back, they remain as blank spaces, and any time she starts to suspect that she may have known him before, she immediately forgets that she ever even suspected it to begin with.
    However, there are still many moments where she acts in ways around him that she acted before, she feels very comfortable with him, she says a lot of the same things to him that she's said before, etc. Other characters who are aware of the reality of the situation have commented that "even when the mind forgets, the body remembers" indicating that muscle memory is stronger than even the series most powerful magic. This video just reminded me of that pretty strongly.

    • @DarylTalksGames
      @DarylTalksGames  Před 5 lety +1

      That's a great question man, and to be honest I don't know if I could do the answer justice haha. But to take a crack at it, I would think that mechanical transference only comes into play for those that make some sort of emotional investment in playing the game. Procedural info often rears its head in dreams, but so does emotionally charged info. So I think if anyone has that emotional investment in any game, they are even more likely to experience the hypnagogic dreams. I hope that makes sense! haha

Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. A sing lap should be completed every time you hear this sound. ding Remember to run in a straight line and run as long as possible.
