I think the other big thing that makes classic Tetris players seem slower is the fact that classic Tetris doesn't have the hard drop that instantly snaps a piece to the bottom. Naturally that guy wouldn't be too used to that.
*Technically* the original Tetris, the Soviet Elektronika 60 variant, does have that ability to instantly drop blocks to the bottom. But yes, the versions outside of the Soviet variants omitted that feature for the longest while.
@@TKFTGuillotine It's been months but the reason why he isnt used to soft dropping either, is that in competitive classic Tetris, the pieces already move very rapidly as in competitions its the standard to start out at level 18 speed, at level 18 speed, blocks drop a row every 3 frames, and with methodical smart placement being key, it wouldnt be smart to shorten the already short time you have by using the pushdown. I want to say most competitive tetris players dont use soft drops or push down, with the exception of a few. Hope that cleared it up.
Trevor Martin is you soft drop things down on night speed it’ll lock easier if you accidentally hit the bottom
@@spuddie You would be right that outside of speedrun format, if a player regularly presses down in competition (I think ITZsharky does that), it's a notable trait and is usually done for psychological reasons, as the soft-drop bonuses are considered to be negligible in terms of points
Spectrum Holobyte's version and Microsoft's version did in fact have that.
You forgot to mention the single most important difference between classic and modern tetris : THE RANDOMIZER. Modern tetris will give you each of the 7 tetriminoes one after the other in random order, whereas classic tetris is entirely random, making getting shit like 10 Z pieces in a row a real (albeit unlikely) thing.
Anyone who's played tetris enough knows that classic tetris players choose efficiency and elegance over speed, and that it's equally as impressive.
This. The RNG is the main difference imo, and really changes the entire way you play the game. I actually wish there's a modern Tetris game that has that old randomizer back. I love NEStris but I can't get the right equipment to play it properly...

John Francis Doe Nullpomino has loads of rulesets, one of them may be the one you're looking for.
The NES one is there, for sure.
Another point I think everybody missed, the stereoscopic view in VR mode gives everything its own visual depth in 3D space so it would have helped him visually separate the particle effects from the playing field, making it less of a distraction, which could be a big contributor to why he would play better.

VR also allows your brain to focus your attention fully on to the task at hand without any distractions from you environment. (except the particles) This is actually an great example for the performance difference you can expect from the human brain when it isn't splitting resources as much.

Yes he gets it. Tetris doesn't have to be 100% seriously played all the time.
This is an opportunity to take that same basic game from 30+ years ago and mix it up for a different experience. Add synesthesia and make it evoke new emotions.

To change a version of a game you are used to, except for rare exceptions, is like adjusting to a new world. There are different elements, new laws of physics you have to adapt to. His tetris was adapted to precision and foresight while modern tetris trains someone for reaction, timing, and flexibility. The two of these are such different play styles that it would be insulting to compare the two! it's like eating an apple and going "WAIT A SECOND!! THIS ISN'T MY CARROT!!" or having some nice soup and saying "THIS ISN'T CRUNCHY ENOUGH!!!"

Kali Takumi Tetris on Gameboy is almost exactly the same as NES Tetris.
I found the old original Gameboy Tetris, to be much easier after playing Tetris the Grand Master. I've never played the NES version though.

Classic Tetris has no hard drop, no hold, no twists, no ghost pieces, only a single piece preview and no 7-bag randomizer. Of course Classic Tetris experts play much slower than Modern Tetris experts - they are used to a much slower version where they are not able to think too far ahead. On the other hand, making a Modern Tetris expert play a Classic Tetris game would see them fumbling around the unpredictable randomizer and the greatly limited preview.

A good Tetris player doesn’t need any preview, in fact, I rarely ever looked at it unless I was looking for the long piece which did not appear often. It was also off entirely in certain instances. The drop is faster while pressing up, not instant but not really that slow. I never understood why people think playing Tetris faster means you are good at it. Modern Tetris seems to give you the pieces you need and a huge preview, where original Tetris you rarely got the piece you wanted, or got 6 of the same piece in a row which made the preview nearly irrelevant anyway. When modern Tetris players fail at original Tetris it isn’t because of speed or fumbling around, it’s because original Tetris is actually much harder because of the randomizer code. Which throws modern players off, I’ve personally seen them get frustrated, throw a tantrum, and say omg I can’t play this it’s giving me shit pieces. Noooo you were just spoiled before and now you are playing real Tetris lol.

Check out the Japanese players Koryan and Greentea, they are Tetris Grandmasters and where able to translate their skills to classic Tetris pretty well. I mean they trained for months but skills do translate

LolyJr Does Things well Tetris 99 is actually very different from modern. I see that you can get past level 9 but mainly Tetris 99 requires clean and fast building. Tafokints says the you should grind sprint or 40l until about 1:30 minutes at that point you will usually get into the top 20. But if you grind to around 40-59 seconds. You will be winning most of your Tetris 99 games

There is no reason to create a new "competitive/tournament/hardcore" tetris game, this was already made, 30 years ago. The developers are trying to capture the almost meditative aspect of the game, and apparently they are doing a really good job.

I agree being someone who plays Modern Tetris that classic Tetris to the billion times harder I probably play faster than Trey but if I were to pick up an NES Tetris and play it I would look like in an unexperienced player
You can tell how genuinely excited you are about certain things in the little quiver in your voice. It's really infectious honestly, although I already love tetris the hitman (a game I don't care much about) video you did got me actually pumped for you. I seems you have found the format that makes you happy and I think it comes across in the videos. Keep it up because I am enjoying your enjoyment :)

I'm not competitive Tetris player myself but I do recognized that every game ever made is different and with my own personal experience very therapeutic. I'm really looking forward to playing Tetris Effect myself. Just watching the trailer itself kinda put me in a Zen-like transe that want me wanted more.

Doesn't even touch on the biggest difference between the two games: the seven bag randomizer, srs, and kick table. Also modern tetris is much more focused on sending lines to your opponent efficiently with t-spins and downstacking efficiently while competitive classic tetris is focused on getting a high score and surviving for a while. People who imply that classic is "harder" than modern because it is easier to survive are missing the whole point.
I really liked this video, and particularly the ending. Looking forward to more of this deep stuff, I deffnitely have to check out more from Nick Robinson and Trey Harrison.

I was sitting here wondering why people were fussing about him not playing cleanly or fast.
I stopped playing Tetris after the NES and Gameboy versions. I tried one of them and it just felt different and I didn't like it. I still go back to my gameboy version at times, but I don't see myself playing the newer games unless it is to verse someone else that challenged me at that specific game.
Now after seeing the few replays you put in this video, I do see why people said that, but... Those aren't the same game. I agree that the original was unforgiving and I really liked that about the game. Saving blocks for later? I don't think I like that feature.
Yea I played Tetris on PS4, the one that came out and had online issues LOL and I was terrible at it because I'm used to gameboy color Tetris. Tetris Effect I got the hang of quickly though because it's better in VR. I feel like on a flat screen it's harder to play because you don't see the whole screen as easily as with a gameboy or VR headset on.

I have less than 1 pps(pieces per second) on average
and its just kinda like this loop of "hey I should actually play tetris it is a fun game u know" -> "holy shit Im bad at this game" -> "nevermind I dont wanna play a game where I will always lose"
@@Tr0lliPop You'll be able to catch up for sure just by practicing in solo gamemodes. There are also different clients which are good for practicing. Nullpomino has tons of gamemodes for things like digging and combo'ing. On YT you can also find good videos about stacking and strategies specific to competitive tetris. Mainly you should play marathon or no-gravity endless modes, stacking with the side well like in NES or stacking with the 4-wide well + residue like you will in your competitive games. Think about as many previews as you can and try to build slow but efficient. The difference between slow and fast players is having experience and intuition on where to put the pieces. You can also learn finesse which will reduce the actual placement time to almost nothing. Then, mix in practicing 40 line sprint or just playing marathon with high PPS. If you play quite a bit, you can probably get to 1.5 PPS in a month. Faster on games like tetrio or jstris where you can customise DAS and ARR.
@@Jerryfan271 Thanks for the tips, this really made my day ^v^ btw, I noticed that I actually play faster without finesse since in my case playing with finesse requires me to stop for an entire second not doing anything on each piece to remember what the finesse for that piece was lmao

As long as it's Tetris and I don't have to play it fast. It's fine by me. I have no problem with those versions. Its just I would never play Tetris as fast as you see people playing those versions. It was just nice seeing what the game plays like from a guy who plays it at a speed I would also play it. If it was a guy slamming them down super fast I dont know if I would have even watched the whole video. I like the Lumines games so seeing the cool effects and new music also excites me.
fatal85 you don't have to play most modern tetris games fast. The only ones where you have to play fast are the tetris grandmaster games

I love this perspective of old school vs. new school versions of tetris. I've always seen 1984 tetris tournaments but never the newer versions and i can see that it takes more skill in playing the 1984 version than the newer versions for reasons explained in the video. Players who play 1984 tetris are cleaner than other players who play modern versions because they used to a more stricter/punishing type of version.

I never grew up with either form, but the only style of Tetris I ever liked playing was the original, so his playing never scanned as either slow or odd. I'm no pro, but I know the technique of leaving the last row open, and the fact that I learned to do it independently speaks to the unique playing demands of both styles.

@@babylonian Pretty sure he'd obliterate them. Once you are so used to play in harder mode, you can pretty much play an easier version with little adjusting.
Reverse it... and it'll feel like hell.
That's why not that many people can bear playing Dark Souls type game. And mostly the one that can bear it either used to play old games or enjoy old games.
Old games are ..... freakin punishing. No auto-save, Barely any potions or ammos, no auto-regenerate health, sometimes even perma-death.
Oh ... right... don't forget those ones that deletes your save file without any warning #%#&%@^&$!%!#%#

First time viewer here, part 1 was in my recommended section and me remembering og nes/Tetris i clicked it .. i found this to be REALLY interesting.. and i love that Trey loves og Tetris so much! It was interesting to catch his opinion on the newer game versions and i totally think that if his wife or someone close to him bought him the VR PS4 setup he would totally play it .. quite a bit too imo. Like he said not competitive play but he would "for the love of the game" enjoy it completely! Great Vid!

Yeah, if by great at articulating his thoughts you actually mean it takes ten god damned minutes to figure out if this guy actually like the game or not, then yes, he is great at articulating his thoughts.
The most important thing when you playing a game is having fun.
Yeah, those old tetris games are quite brutal. A single mistake can cost you a game almost instantly, and sometimes, at higher speeds and heights I haven't even been able to get a piece across to the side of the screen without it locking in place. (usually in an awkward spot that almost guarantees failure).
I'm certainly not some master tetris player, but I'm a lot better at it than my former boyfriend. His competitive streak caused him to try to beat my scores, but he couldn't manage even with about 50 attempts to my one.
Anyway, what I learnt to play is the gameboy version, which is firmly in the old school tetris camp.
You can't play that at the speeds of modern tetris and have even the slightest hope in hell of managing to even survive, much less get a decent score...
I'm not even a big Tetris player myself and this was fun to watch. Always nice to see extremely talented gamers play a game and give their thoughts about it.
