- I had an incredible experience at the 2018 Classic Tetris World Championships...getting to see, in person, the year that changed everything.

The CTWC 2019 is very close! Watch it live here on October 18-20...I'll be there again. / classictetris
Corrections/Clarifications:
3:54 - it isn't quite accurate to say that Jani struggled at first, because he actually had a stellar tournament debut in 2013, making it to the quarterfinals before going out to Harry.
25:42 Harry Hong also got 2 maxouts in qualifying.
2019 video is now up! czcams.com/video/_6IQFMcKM6s/video.html
Hello 2019 we miss you
let me just say i love your videos and they keep me entertained :3 you got me into tetris
Pog
It’s literally 2021
I’m so glad that this video has made it to internet
Thank you, glad you watched it! Love your channel.
rob, play the nes controller as an instrument at the retro gaming expo next year lol
A wild Rob Scallon appeared!
rob stop watching videos and learn the Arpeggione.
I love how sometimes you just see Rob Scallon commenting on tetris videos. I can't really explain why, but its hilarious to me
I love how I live in a time where people just casually make hour long documentaries.
Because there's so much stuff :)
I didn't even realise it was hour long until I read your comment😂
I just realised that I watched an hour long documentary without knowing
"""Documentary"""""" more like 30 minutes of filler with 20 minutes of actually interesting content
@@classicpinball9873 I wouldn't call it filler because it isn't a documentary at all. It's a vlog with some really interesting info. Read the title, this video is about his experience.
You’re amazing Scout. People are really wanting more insight on a competitor’s time at the event, and I’m glad you are doing this for the community.
Looking forward to seeing you next weekend!
:) looking forward to seeing you too!
Thanks for sending me here, great vid
Can't t wait to see what great things you guys pull off this year.
Joseph Saelee Y E S !
49:23 can't believe a fortnite player won the championship game.
Just kidding congrats on winning! 😄
What an emotional roller coaster for Joseph, the dude is going places.
BeasttrollMC yeah, I 100% agree
Also hi beast
A wild Ed appears wtf
rip mcpvp lol
Im gay
BeasttrollMC didn’t know you watched classic Tetris lol
Joseph's passion for Tetris is no joke. I can literally find his comment in almost every Trtris-related vdos. Lol
hprs. r/Ihadastroke
LPS Chocolatemuffins That is literally a one word typo. Get off reddit
@@carstrom9032 Trtris and vdos isnt 1
It didn't last very long though. 🤷 Dude took one look at rolling and was like "Yeah... No. I'm officially done with this." Lol.
The most important CTWC of all time.
And yet still, a normal gameplay from a pro nowadays could still far exceed what is shown here.
I wish every community was like Tetris community.
Winner: I think I won.
Loser: Yes, congrats brother, here is a hug.
With a lot of other communities there is so much hostility.
What other compettive community has a lot of hostility?
Low tier god
@@williambeldamlkke8054 league of legends
@@crow_tft I would argue that the pro league only jokes with each other. And of course there won't be the same amount of friendliness, because it's on a larger scale, but nether the less they still seem to have fun with each other.
@Kits The Smasher ?! & SF I don't condone the usge of fortnite, therefore I have chosen to look beyond this game that you talk of.
Suuuuuper nice video as last year's one! Looking forward to seeing you again next week!
Green tea!
Good luck there
Super rooting for you, man! See you there!
Good luck with those final bosses man, rooting for you too
Haha, I remember that lady who saw Greentea's maxout. She was being really supportive and asked him if he had ever done that before. Super cute :D
"Oh a few times"
Heart goes out to Heather.
RIP Jonas 😢
I'm noticing this new trend of people producing "amateur" documentaries about videogames a card games and stuff like that... and I'm really IMPRESSED by the QUALITY, the "script" and the pace of these videos. Especially yours. You're AMAZING ^____^
Congratulations, @aGameScout ! I'm looking forward to your next videos, David ;)
Thank you! Yes, the script was one of the toughest parts, trying to think of a way to condense and organize everything I wanted to talk about.
@@aGameScout So I can definitely remove the quotation marks from script ;) Keep it up!
Are there documentaries about card games? As in, trading card games? Could you point me to one?
@@toanoradian The channel Rhystic Studies has an ongoing series of videos about Magic: the Gathering. It's not structured (going through the whole history of the game in order), but every aspect he covers is very detailed and contains enough background to understand it completely. There are also channels that make videos explaining the lore of the game chronologically, although I don't remember their names right now.
I've been waiting for this vid for literally a year
Danielbatmanj, my first twitch sub! I know, it took me way too long...there won't be delays like this on future videos though!

I've been playing since 1992, and still haven't broken 300,000. I found the documentary "ecstasy of order" and thought "wow! and i thought Tetris was dead..." A few months later i found the Joseph Vs. Jonas video on CZcams, and i was totally blown away!!! I didn't even think that level of Tetris playing was even possible! I'm still amazed!! I believe Joseph will continue to push the boundaries of Tetris, and set even more world records!!
Stopped by for 42:14 and 48:45 -- Hits different after January 2021. Thanks again for doing such a great job as a documentarian here.
I am rewatching this in 2021 and i just teared up. The year that jonas gave the stick to the younger generation. The year that exploded the NES tetris competitive scene. Jonas put down the ground for Josheph and Josheph inspired so many new top level players. Jonas was the lord of CTWC and in my heart he will always be. Rest In Piece king. 🙏
I had a feeling that whenever this video did arrive it would be something special!! Totally worth the wait and with impeccable timing to help everyone get excited for this year's World Championship! Thanks so much for your contributions to the community - these videos help to form an amazing continuation to what started in Ecstasy of Order and are must-watch content for Tetris fans! See you this weekend... BOOM~!
Thanks so much Chris! I really loved the presentation you gave earlier this year. Can't wait for the booms again this weekend!
Seeing these pictures on Jonas smiling and having a good time is just the best. RIP champ
Wow I didn’t even realize this was almost an hour long. It was entertaining all the way through. Time just flew by. Keep up the amazing content
HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T NOTICE UNTIL YOU MENTIONED IT
I've watched this video so many times, but only today did I realize that this is 50+ minutes.
RIP Jonas Neubauer.
:(

So, I actually recorded a very small amount of joeseph vs koryan completely out of coincidence as I was walking around that year. czcams.com/video/Cxfaw2XFDB8/video.html I'm a local Portlander and a rivals player so I wasn't even there for tetris. haha
Honestly, this was one of the most amazing youtube documentaries I'd ever seen. I'm not sure if its because I'm a teenager myself, but watching Joseph beat Koryan, win the torunamen, and then have seeing his post interview brought literal tears to my eyes. I'm not even a huge tetris fan, so I'm not sure why this video ended up in my recommended, but I am so grateful to the CZcams Algorithm for providing me with this 10/10 quality content.
I knew enabling notifications would pay off!
Thanks for ringing the bell!
Raiden Vakarian soo true!!
I know I've already left two comments, but this keeps going through my mind and it's something I think you should hear. This video helped me re-live the great time I had at the event last year, and reminded me why I still plan on going this year despite my retirement from Tetris. Thank you. This really is the experience of last year's CTWC.
Thanks for stopping by to leave the third comment, that's really nice to hear. One of the things that motivated me to finish making the video was to preserve my memory of the year before I had forgotten all the little details. Glad it could feel the same for someone else as well.
The explained video got an incredible response because it was incredibly good.
3 minutes in to this, and I think it's also going to be incredibly good.
It's always "BOOM Tetris for Jonas" in my mind.
Honestly this spectacular. Can’t wait to meet you there!
Same to you! It’s gonna be an amazing weekend
I'm so excited for the 2019 tournament next week!
It’s gonna be lit
I don't even know who I should root for. I guess, I just will root for all of them.
I did not realize that the video took an entire hour...I was so entertained by the whole thing! Congrats on what has happened, and I am super excited to see where this takes you!
Not the first time I watch this video, and it still makes me both laugh & cry, and I don’t even play NES Tetris.
Waiting was long, but completely worth it.
i cannot imagine a more wholesome community than the classic tetris one. this must be so much fun to attend,i mean apart from the pressure of competing. iam not lying,i was always a bit of a jonas fan but joseph just floored me with his abilities to play tetris.
i must make it a point to buy an NES and of course classic tetris too..and who knows perhaps one day i can have a chat with you in portland...always wanted to go to the retro gaming convention anyway.
and now iam going to grab a glass of red wine and watch the 2018 tournament once again :D
love from germany :)
Do you already play the game? If not, i recommend trying it on Emulator with an USB Controller as well, pretty nice training if you haven't managed to get the actual console yet.
- Greetings from Germany
@@DreckbobBratpfanne i got my first nintendo console in form of a gameboy in 91 i believe. it came packaged with tetris and my parents got me megaman as an extra game.
my mum couldnt understand the hype i had for this mashine and never really approved of me spending time with it. that was until she tried tetris for the first time..after that it was pretty much a fight between us for who gets to play :D
having said that, i never owned an NES back then because by that time the SNES was about to release. so i havent actually ever played the NES version of tetris..but many many other types. and from just following the tetris community and finding out about what a nice bunch they seem to be i got interested in the game again...and i would like to play it "vanilla" as its called nowadays :D
but you are right,i think since 8bitdo and the likes make high quality controllers its deffo worth it checking out an emulated version.
@@adambriest5257 I played the GameBoy Version too at first xD. Too bad i never knew how to access the “Heart“ Levels back then.
There is an awesome Discord channel of the CTWC Germany Community as well, very nice people there.
@@DreckbobBratpfanne well i shall make sure to join it then..thanks for the headsup :D
What a great recap. Not just of your experience but the whole current Tetris scene.
That zoom in of you at 43:43 made me laugh. Great stuff, my man.
Joseph Saelee was the perfect person to pass the torch to. He is all heart. Jonas saw that immediately.
the wait has paid off boys
You have great skills in tetris and being a nice guy, but your skills to make this kind of video are off the charts. Greetings from Spain. Viva Albacete!
Great video! Almost an hour of my life well spent.
Thank you!
Great video and must've taken forever to put together all these clips all the way up to the events of last week. Definitely keep us up to date when you qualify for top 32.
I’ve watched this video over 80000 times
FINALLY GOT OUT AFTER ONE YEAR AJAHAHHA, Incredible video David
Thank you! :)
@Matthew Bluefox difficult, If i didn't even got ot after 3 hours of playing on stream today lol
Honestly the best part is how upbeat and happy you are. I’m not good either but to see you confidently walk up to a game you figured you’d already lost was kinda funny and underdog story at the same time
double maxout in 2019 - insane 7:03
double maxout in 2022 - yeah whatever
Imagine the conversation he had on the plane. "So what brings you to Oregon, business trip?" "Nah, Tetris."
I had only seen the last video a couple of days ago, so I didn’t have to wait about a year
haha nice!

I loved this!
There are people like I would never root for in the tournaments, but just a little bit of info like where they come from (in the Tetris community) makes me look at them in a whole new way. 2019 will be a crazy tournament for sure.
I'm so glad you're back! This was a really well-structured video, shining light on the narratives and rivalries hidden for a semi-engaged viewer like me. I wish you luck in 1-video-per-week plan, and even MORE LUCK in Portland!
watching u tell the story of last years ctwc made me go through all the emotions I had while experiencing it via youtube last year again and now im extra hyped for the 2019 world championship!!!! thanks for the amazing video, and good luck next week!
Love how you draw all those characters, they are so identical to themselves, your video quality so good that even someone who don't know this community will fall in love, I share this to my sister and now she is so into 2019 CTWC!
This is such a cool and well made overview of last year's tournament. Can't wait to watch this year's championship and hope to see you qualify after all your hard work.
Thank you for this piece of art! Love content like this and I will always try to support people who are invested in making their community a better place.
This documentary was SO GOOD!!! 8 mins in, I new this hour was gonna fly by!😁
Okay, now that i completed the Video i have to say that you did an awesome job and it was worth the wait. I can say without any doubt that you are just like Jonas and others an excellent ambassador of Tetris and the Tetris community.
It was your 2018 video randomly getting recommended to me that got me to start watching right before the 2018 CTWC. And it has provided me with so much entertainment over the past year! Thank you!
This is such a great video; gave me chills throughout its entirety! Super well edited and very informative of the experience of actually being and participating in the event. 2019 CTWC is going to be insane! Looking forward to your next videos
youtube reccomendations getting good again. this is incredibly high quality; very good work, kept me on the edge of my seat till the end.
For some reason, this is exactly what i needed today after puking my soul out from food poisoning.
I love the quality of this vid as someone who wrote a thesis on documentaries, and I absolutely loved learning about this scene and all its awesome people. Thanks a ton for making it and I look forward to more!
The thing is, I know exactly what happened at the ctwc last year, yet this video was so incredibly worth watching. Well done! Let's see you in top 40 this year!
Perfect timing. I am already hyped up for the upcoming CTWC and this year is going to be nothing but AMAZING. So much has happened since Joseph "suddendly" surfaced and won the tournament. The veterans seems to have found new joy in playing Tetris. Jeff looked very comfortable in the pre-tournaments, always keeping the stack low, no YOLO play, Ben has participated in the CTM, and last time I saw him he was much more comfortable at Level 19 speed... Jani is as crazy as ever and pulls off moves I didn't even think where possible, Svavar won CTE...
And there appeared a lot of new players on the scene, so it's going to be intense. Of course, Joseph is the favorite to defend his title, he's still a Tetris God.
Ok, enough rambling, now on to watch the video, lol.
Very informative and well put together video! Good luck at the 2019 tournament!!
This is by far my favorite video on CZcams right now, amazing job
The production quality was so high and honestly waiting a year was worth it :O
I loved the player introductions and the well explained stuff, as well as unseen footage of the event, everything was just amazing - you included so much stuff I had watched multiple times and still explained it better than I understood
Good luck next week, hope you qualify :)
I had given up hope this video would come out, but definitely was worth the wait.
What a great video. Looking forward to the weekend to watch the CTWC 2019!
I stumbled over a Tetris video on CZcams about 11 months ago, from the CTWC event. And found myself fascinated over how well these guys played the game.
After been mesmerized of all the content, I quickly looked for more, followed Joseph, Jonas and Koryan. Now I’m looking forward for the next championship!
Ill be sitting on the couch and follow the twitch stream.
Lots of luck to you, and your peers! Love the game, love the people and love the atmosphere.
Cheers from Norway!
What an engrossing documentary ... professional quality. I had no interest or idea of the competitive scene of Tetris before this video, but I was super interested all the way through.
Thank you so much for your videos! We went to Portland yesterday for the first time and got to saw the celebs! Looking forward for more!!
Please make a video like this for 2019! it's amazing to see an inside perspective. It makes the event so much more personal and so much more special. Thank you so much for your contribution to this community!
so well put together!! great job.

Wait what that was really an hour?? Felt like 20 minutes. Well done!!
Your videos are such a pleasure to watch. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this.
I only realised the video was 50+ minutes long after finishing it wow! I only found out about the tetris tournament tonight thanks to your videos, really hope I can get to watch the tournament live next year!
I didn't see anyone else capture Heather clapping for Joseph's finals victory like you did at 45:50, so thanks for that. Heather and Jonas really are a couple that just love games :)
Heather and Jonas are class acts
I watched your video explaining tetris last week and since then I watched couple of tetris matches every day. Was wondering when you will post another video and here we go ...😄
You have great talent of making videos/documentaries and would be great commentator of main event, I'm sure of that. Keep up passion and good work man!
Thank you so much!
This was totally worth the wait. Amazing video! I'm really looking forward to seeing all the new videos, and good luck at at the CTWC!
Really enjoyed this video, I only starting watching the CTWC last year and I'm hooked.
That face Joseph made. That will be a moment he will remember forever. I hope he remembers:)
oh look! that's me right on the right hand side end at 50:16
A most excellent video talking about a helluva year in Classic Tetris. Loved hearing about your journey.
I'm really inspired by it all. I entered the qualifier rounds in Germany this year since I was already at Gamescom to showcase my game MaoMao Castle, so thought why not. Having not played any NES Tetris in about a year, I wasn't expecting much, but I managed to scrape into the top 8, to really become part of the tournament and enjoy it to the fullest. I think I'm gonna actually practice this year and see if I can level up.
dude this is super interesting, great job making this!
Brilliant video. I can only echo everyone else's praise. Fantastic coverage and a great insight. What a great community. Good luck to you and everyone else competing this weekend. I can't wait!
Man, I can't wait till Friday.
Hey! I have no idea how I stumbled upon this video, but what an incredible story; the pacing, the unfolding of so much Tetris lore, thanks for making such a fantastic piece of content. This deserves far more views.
What a great doc. I can see a lot of work with into this.
I thought this was shorter and I’ve sat here an entire hour because this was interesting
these are the people i keep getting matched against in tetris 99
This is one of the best videos on a sport that I've ever watched. Keep it up Scout!
Showed so many insights that I couldn't grasp by just watching the tournament on CZcams!
The community is as amazing as I expected!
Hahaha I love the drawing of me! I'm still watching so I may leave another comment later.
A quick shout-out to Alexey Pajitnov.
The man who blessed us with this gem.
I been waiting for this video and it didn't disappoint at all. Just looking at the CTWC it is going to be a extremely good series. I wish you luck for the coming tournament.
You're videos as well as the rest of the CTWC community are such a great treat to watch. Looking forward to attending one year as I train. Cheers from Washington.
Great video man! See you next weekend :)

thank you so much. your ctwc explained video was my introduction to the wonderful world of the classic tetris tournaments. after watching for 2 years now i'm picking up the game for myself now. keep creating please.
An amazing video, great work put into it, emotions are all over the place. This is one of the best video's seen in my life!
Extremely underrated video.
Did not know the Tetris skill ceiling was this high
Such great content Scout! I can't believe I sit through the entire video but it was super fun to see great players competing.
I really like the style of this mini-doc. It's really charming. So excited for the tournament tomorrow!
If wasn't for the Joker, this would be the best video for 2019!!! Thanks for all the hard work. Can't wait to see the new videos! Sorry for my bad english!! Haha
i dont follow these kinds of things but damn this was as dramatic as a sports anime gahhhh
Man, what a great video. Informative, entertaining and it transports the energy and euphoria just right! Thank you very much
Great video once again. I really like seeing the crowd’s point of view during tense matches. Keep it up!
