I really like how articulate David West is here. Just look at it from this perspective, I'm not saying guys weren't tough in the 70's, 80"s and 90's because they most certainly were, but was it just because they were "built" different or was the game allowing them to play more physical? Of course guys aren't going to shoot crazy percentages in the paint if you're just allowed to tackle people. Of course it's going to be harder to drive around someone when their hand and are are stuck to you. And he makes a great point about guys' height and weight. That Pacers team was a big and heavy team, yet Lebron physically dominated them. Not finessed them. People use this era against Lebron constantly, like it's his fault, but why not look at all eras with that same critical lens. They didn't have to guard guys like Steph as soon as he crossed half court, they didn't have to worry about 7' guys with guard like abilities, they didn't have to worry about guarding bigs outside the paint, they didn't have to play more complicated defenses. In this era, no matter how big, tall, strong, fast you are, you can most likely score from all 3 levels and have decent handles too. Most teams back then didn't have a guy that could guard guys like Bron, Giannis, or KD. Just because you could hit people out of the air or just be overly physical doesn't mean you can actually defend. Again, not saying they were bad defensively but it's something you have to think about when judging eras or having a GOAT debate.

I'm a magic & Lakers fan when i started playing basketball. When MJ came he made the NBA became global. I don't really like ball hogs but 2 3-peats the hype the swagger the highlights and the shoes, I also want to be like Mike. Strong case vs Kareem being the 🐐. When MJ retired i started to appreciate his greatness even more. Then came LeBron and all the hype and expectations. I never liked him from the start comparing him to be the next MJ i didnt like it at all. and just like MJ he slowly gained my respect with the style of his game (pass first). His freeakish athletisicm, the way he continuously developed his game, his endurance & longetivity through his work ethic & discipline, the level of competition and the way he adapt for 3 decades. The level of scrutiny and hate he had to endure specially today's age of social media. He surpassed it all. You can tell it by his stats, advance metrics, diff accolades, records being broken and great players he surpassed and being able to do it the right way in and out of the court. That's why for me he is the 🐐. And after he is done we will surely miss his greatness.

Well said but What LeBron should have done is build a legit legacy naturally and organically like Kobe and MJ did..LeBron chose to cut corners and be an opportunist and jump to the team that has the best chance of winning and ring chase.. Since there is less defense, fast pace and more shooting, winning is harder to predict. In the 90s you can hold a 10 lead by slowing the game. Somewhat control the outcome. Now a 20 point lead can vanish in 3-4 minutes. Winning is less about a specific player but more so who gets hotter.
They are not playing less defense... The offence has gotten way stronger than the defence so you see more people scoring...
Just think about this... In the past you had one Iverson and one Hakeem Dream.
Today "everyone" is using those Iverson crosses + Dream's footwork + better 3pt shooters

@@julianselaise1471 That's far from the truth. His footwork was great, he had a very reliable go to jumphook and he was a really good passer. His free throws was the only flaw in his game. He didn't need to take mid range jumpers since he could dunk it or lay it in every time being way more efficient.

David is a real one. He graduated college (Xavier U) as a Jr and was working on his Masters his Sr year. Plus, he was married and a young child. He was a husband, Masters student, father, and All-American NCAA basketball player his Sr year!

More than player weight and athleticism, you just have more skill guys now. You don't have players on the court who are just enforcers anymore. Pretty much everyone has to be able to shoot. Even guys wgo struggle with shooting, like Draymond Green, need to be elite in other areas like passing, defense, and ball handling. We've never had this many elite players in the league. Never had this level of overall competition. Never had this level of skill across the board
We also never had a chance to see past players... with the rule changes to allow offense freedom post 2004... allow carrying, travelling and light defense, light fouls. Imagine if those rules in place for MJ in the Piston days... the whole team would have been fouled out. Guys dont have more face up skill, and less back-to-the-basket skill.

MJ,Garnett, Gary Payton and Kobe all have the most with 9. One of if not the greatest mid range shooter ever. One of the greatest perimeter defenders ever. MJ leads everyone in PER and career win shares per 48, and leads Bron in box plus minus but is second overall. A lot of what Bron has over him are longevity stats that stack up regardless.

Players weigh about 3 lbs more now on avg n are 2 1/2 inches shorter than they were in the 90s.. with an identical avg vertical leap of 28 inches same as the 90s.. so a guy who weighs 3 lbs more is 2 1/2 inches shorter with the same vertical is better? 😂😂

I was with him until his slander on Dennis Rodman. Worm defended Malone, Shaq & Morning and led the league in rebounding.
I think David forgot that Rodman was one of the main reasons why the Bulls beat the Jazz those 2 times in the finals… he was undersized but he played Malone (who was 260+lbs) extremely tough.

Extremely insightful, I didn't know about this weight evolution of nba players. Seems like size, speed, athleticism and skill all went up.
I watched my first NBA games during MJ's first finals, Bulls vs Lakers 1991. At first, I believed what the media said about 90s defense being so tough and physical. At some point, when I rewatched Bulls vs Lakers, I realized that it was a lie. MJ would get fouls for the slightest contact. More importantly, I was quite shocked at how slow and how bad defenses were compared to today's finals games. Defenders were unathletic, and you had so much space to shoot, to go wherever you want.
There is a such thing called illegal defense back then that prevented double teaming or something like that
@@TheKiddballer21 Back then, if you wanted to double team, it had to be a hard double team, so a defender can't be in no man's land. This prevents zone defense, or multiple layers of defenders, or building a wall to stop players like Giannis and Lebron.

Kobe Bryant said hand-checking could not stop him, but layered defenses could, which new rules allowed.

What he said meant absolutely nothing. Shaq was huge back then, Ralph Sampson, Olajuwon, Big Country, David Robinson, there’s more big men in the 80’s and 90’s than today. Dennis Rodman was great strong and knew how to position his body to use it to his advantage. Reason why nobody liked going against Rodman and why he lead the NBA in rebounds for 8 straight years. He also has a DPOY award.

Rodman was 210 as a rookie at small forward by the end of his career he was actually much closer to 235-40 playin power forward. Some of his examples were off but whatever the case LBJ is a big boy when he was at the Olympics in 2008 or 2012 somebody reported LBJ hit the scale and was 270 plus at 6’9

I would also add that he has won a championship on three different teams and almost in 3 different eras of his career. Basketball is obviously a team sport and the bulls back then we're incredibly stacked.
Karl Malone was dominant in that era... easy a top 50 guy... probably top 30. He's just a creepo... 2 time MVP... 14 time All Star... 4 time All Defense. I think it's worth noting as well that the talent pool for NBA basketball is expanding. International players are so talented nowadays, and for the past 5 years, the MVP has been someone from outside North America. The Redeem Team was 20 years ago, and we're getting to the point where national rosters from some of the European countries have a decent shot at taking down Team USA. Honestly, I wouldn't be completely shocked if we couldn't take gold in 2024. There are too many good players out there that could get hot and beat us.
If the talent pool is larger, the talent at the top has to be better to reach the heights of previous generations. I wonder who the first international player to enter GOAT contention will be? I don't think Jokic will reach that height, but it's not impossible (if he gets like 3 more MVPS and wins 5 straight or something ridiculous). Doncic is an even longer shot right now, but he's got a lot of years ahead of him. Giannis feels like he's capping out and won't be able to get there at this point.
