Okay, here is the short of my story. I am 58 years old. I haven't had health insurance sense I was 46. Here is what I do to make it. I don't drink alcohol, I don't eat sugar or other crappy food, I exercise most every day, and keep my head on a swivel so I don't get squashed. So far, so good.

Yeah I haven't had the scam called "health insurance" for about 5 years now and I am in the best shape body and mind of my life. My personal doctor was useless and never gave any good advice on my biggest health problem which was my obesity. With a more proactive approach I beat my obesity and through CZcams I have learned how to maintain my immune system and I have been 100% health other than a few minor injuries from working out.

I had to take a lady to the Emergency Department a few weeks ago. Do to the current events, if you where not literally dying. You would be sitting in the waiting room for 10 hours or better because of staff shortage, more the. 70% of the staff quit. Not sure what we are paying for anymore if you can't be seen.
So it's time for us to go back to the home remedies. Ones that we thought our grandparents where nuts, when they took it. In the wintertime. My grandmother always used local honey and garlic cloves as a antibiotic. She use to slice an onion and put it on the bottom of our feet then put a sock over it and made us go to bed as kids. She said it would draw the poison out. Head colds was steaming hot water in a bowl and she would put eucalyptus in the water and put our head over the water to capture the steam. So as a kid I really didn't see a doctor.
When my babies where growing up. And we had health insurance. I was constantly taking them. They lived off antibiotics. But looking back, it was because I was feeding them a lot of processed foods. I didn't know it at the time, but both of my kids including myself. We are allergic to all the processed foods. How I discovered it. One of my children ate a bean burrito we got in the freezer section and he fell to the floor and was not breathing. He was rushed to the hospital and the doctor told me, it was the processed foods. He said he sees this alot.
So I think, if we as a society, stop poisoning ourselves, we probably would not need Healthcare and big pharma would go out of business.

I'm on Medicaid, and you're right. I recently thought I was having a heart attack and went to an ER here in DC. They ran a bunch of tests and bloodwork. Thankfully, I was not having a heart attack but the symptoms were troubling and they want me to follow up with my GP (who is outstanding and accepts Medicaid). The hospital called me a couple days later to ask me how I was doing and assured me the care came at no cost (thank you Georgetown University Hospital). That said, it's a crapshoot. Sometimes, you get really subpar care. For example. when I was able to pay out of pocket in wealthier times (or had better insurance), the quality of therapists was much better. On Medicaid, I've had pretty crappy therapists. It's not always their fault (they are overworked and underpaid --- a result of our non-universal system). I don't want "access" and I don't want to "research" constantly or fight and make phone calls until all get out when I've interfaced with the system. I believe everybody deserves, universally, high quality care at the point of service -- FREE -- for everybody. We pay taxes, but where do they go? I wish they would work for us instead of helping Bezos (who pays none) to build dick rockets to space so he and Will Shatner can cry at press conferences.

Yet our taxes pay for Medicaid for people who aren’t working or work part time. It’s broken either way.

I agree mostly on your points on the unnecessary need for health ins. Prior to invention of healthcare in the early 1900's, humans never needed it. The question that nobody ever asks is why do we need it? We all have been brainwashed by society to believe that it is a necessity when it is really a privilege. Sure it comes in handy in an acute/trauma situation, such as an accident. But if it is a car accident, auto insurance, depending on coverage, can take care of medical bills.
Most healthcare needs are caused by chronic illnesses. Nobody ever asks what causes the chronic illnesses. Conventional allopathic medicine was designed for acute care/trauma - not for chronic and preventative diseases. Treatments consisting of primarily drugs, tests, surgery are designed for one purpose and one purpose only - treating the symptoms while making as much profits as possible. The underlying problems never get addressed. It is like putting a piece of vinyl tape over the check engine light on the car's dashboard.
Diet and lifestyle caused illnesses cannot be cured by drugs and surgery. When we address and correct diet and lifestyle then humans do not need conventional medicine. The human body only had 6 million years of evolution to perfect itself, know how to heal itself from most injuries, and be resilient to pathogens. Being in nature and breathing in bacteria is a good start, something that Tim does on a weekly basis. Getting sun exposure, walk/hike, minimize stress, get good quality sleep, eat minimally processed foods diet, etc

Health insurance for two people for Catastrophic is 300 dollars for us a month. We are in our mid 40s. The secret is paying out of pocket for everything and telling the hospital and and doctor that you don't have insurance for labs, tests and Dr visits because they will put you on a sliding scale for paying out of pocket. Yes, it is really messed up. If you say you have insurance they bill the insurance company more and you still pay about the same amount out of pocket. This is what we found out. Also for your labs, you can usually find a cheap lab to do them if you get online and search for your labs that the doctor wants you to get. It takes a bit more leg work and a doctor willing to let you shop around for a lab with al a cart options. If you get in an accident or have a major illness such as cancer, this is where you come in with your Catastrophic health insurance to pay for expenses. It has a high deductible, 5000, but it won't bankrupt you if you have to have some major treatment or long stay in the hospital. In a way it forces you to take better care of yourself. On the plus side of quitting jobs and having your own catastrophic health insurance, you are less stressed out and have more time and energy to do healthy living and exercise. Exercise is free, and don't buy crap food. Buy food that is actually good for you....it doesn't really cost that much...buy some good meat and veg.

I don't think it has to be a choice of choosing to live your dreams over having health care. However; health care insurance is very important for me and I didn't have to make a choice between the two. If a person can't afford health care then maybe they would benefit from evaluating their expenses, seeing where they may cut back or eliminate other stuff, and putting forth the money to have health insurance. If you choose not to have health insurance then I would at least hope that smart adults would live the healthiest lifestyle they can as far as food, exercise, etc to minimize their chances of needing health insurance. Health is wealth and without your health being at a certain level everything else won't happen regardless if it's your dream or not.

Even if you are healthy now and have been for years, things can change fast. Until I was 65 I was never sick. Then on my 65th birthday I started having really bad chest pains. So I went to the local clinic. It wasn't a heart issue, but I came home that day with a diagnosis of leukemia. Since then my medical bills have averaged about $100K a year. This is really untrue. I was dx with autoimmune disease that is extremely expensive to treat in America. Any accident or injury can bankrupt you. Its comforting to think others are doing something wrong and that’s why they need health insurance. But It’s a moral failing to assign blame to people for needing healthcare and medications in a capitalist and exploitative society. Your beliefs feed into this endless mechanism that pits those who are “worthy and healthy” against everyone else.

People really think it's crazy that I'm leaving my toxic job because I will lose these benefits. I have not used my health insurance once in my three years there. I'm young and healthy so I don't need to visit a doctor. The only thing is if I were to get in a big accident or suddenly fall extremely ill. But I would just deal with it if it happens. It's just terrible that people stay in soul-sucking jobs just for health insurance, and I'm not going to be one of those people. I'll figure it out. So many jobs, including low-level retail jobs if I needed to go that route again in desperation, have health insurance included, so I will be just fine.

We are a lower-middle class family and haven't had health insurance for 12 years. A $1000 month premium and a $5,000 deductible means forking out $17,000 before insurance begins to help. hmm, doesn't sound too great.... At first it wasn't easy letting go of insurance but we have come to love being able to pick and choose what healthcare we want and not be strapped to an insurance company's pre-approved plan. We use a medical share plan and it does make you shop around for cash friendly facilities but that keeps them honest in pricing. I will admit that hospitals do not like dealing with self pay types, but we usually get a good deal in the end. Like you mentioned, not staying at a depressing job just for the insurance is a great freedom to have. Another bonus is not having to wait for medicare at 65 to retire.

You get sprinkles of “pain” by exercising every day and have some muscle pain, quitting bad habits like smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy OR drinking mouthfuls of pain by having all kinds of pains and sicknesses when you are not so young. It is up to you, if you live a life where you drink lots if sodas and just don’t take care of your body… you really need to be smarter, you give your car maintenance, your body is a more important piece of equipment, treat it better than your car.

I've never been sick, hospital gave me a discount but I was still on the hook to pay $20,000. I tried everything to get out of that bill by negotiating prices but this hospital would not do anything. Then i saw where people were sued by the hospital if they didn't pay and this hospital was notorious for doing that and winning. Before I went to the hospital that day I stopped at an urgent care center and they told me I had to go to the hospital. I don't think I could ever go completely without health insurance again. I have been making monthly 400 payments for the past 3 years to get this bill paid off. I'm only 37.

Overall I've been blessed with great health, so I'm not a person whose life has ever depended on expensive care. But I've always had coverage through my employer. In my experience, I feel I've received very little for the vast money I've paid in. Yippee, a free physical each year!...that's a rapid-fire interview and a blood test. Most of the time I've ever had a non-acute health concern, the medical system was extremely slow, I received very little helpful information, I never reached my deductible anyway, and doctors weren't able to get to the bottom of the problem. Health insurance defrays some costs, but it hasn't made me healthier!
I gave up my coverage mid-year when I went to part-time. There have been no crises, and I've saved a ton of money. My physical and mental health have markedly improved. Thanks for talking about this issue!

If you made good money you were responsible for paying 90-100% of the bills! Even though a 80-100k+ medical bill is expensive to middle and higher income earning families as well!
Here in Ohio you are charged a penalty every year you file taxes for the months you didn't carry health insurance.
