We have 3 of the 160’s, 3 of the CTX 100’s and 1 of the 925’s. That 160 is an absolute beast!! The biggest thing to watch out for on those is the undercarriage. Make sure to keep the mud and dirt cleaned from the tracks. Especially from behind the drive motors. What happens is that dirt gets forced behind the sprockets and through the seal to the bearings. Once the bearings are out of the drive motors there done. We have yet to find anyone that can rebuild them. It is so common that we keep 2 extra drive motors on the shelf at the shop. In case your wondering there 3600.00 each. Other than drive motors we haven’t had any issues and ours get the hell beat out of them.

I love mini skids because you can see very easy. A normal skid steer has many blind spots. At the end of the day, I am less tired using a mini. Even in the heat and cold and rain and you know, outside stuff.

I used to work for Vermeer, in one of the machine shops, 40 some years ago. Lets just say I could tell you some stories. That's one brand of machine I would not, ever buy, even if they were the only one on the market. Gary Vermeer was an alright guy, but after he retired and his kids took over the company, they did the employees dirty. My name is probably still on a black list.

great looking machine. I could really use one of those myself if it were in the budget. You mentioned getting a trailer moving attachment for it. I would cut a hole in the end of one of those pallet forks and screw a trailer ball onto the end of it when I needed to move a trailer. No farther or faster than you would be moving with it just repositioning it around the property, the ball wouldn't have to be screwed on super tight. Another option would be to get someone to make an attachment to fasten to the end of the fork for the hitch ball if you don't want to drill/cut into your pallet forks. An experienced welder/fabricator should be able to build a usable attachment for you in a couple of hours or less. This would probably be a much cheaper option than getting something like that from the company, and the pallet fork should easily handle the job. Just an Idea I thought I would mention to you

Melissa was asking about gel or glue to keep the rocks from moving. I have not, BUT I saw a video the other day where someone was using clear resin, like you would use for an epoxy table or similar. The guy talking about it was really proud of it and saying it worked really well, you'd have to time it right to make sure it didn't get a bunch of dirt stuck in it, but should work fine. I've seen it done for resin pea-gravel driveways, and those were pretty slick.

It has a function on it that is like a suspender and you can put pallets from 10 feet away into place with the forks attachment to me is the greatest machine I’ve ever seen. You are great operator of everything. I think you would’ve done well with that machine again I don’t know if I spelled it right but I think you know what I’m talking about.

I have the Vermeer 925 absolutely love it easier for me to use it versus my skid steer, etc. I built a grading attachment for the front of mine that tilts left and right most useful. Couldn’t find one for some reason that had the tilt feature.

These little guys are handy indeed . Ive never looked at what the cost is and that would have a ton to do with just how handy I think they are because honestly these are only smart if you have a larger machine on hand for items that get heavier and thats just life. But if you have something that will pickup 5-10K around just incase , this little thing is small and easy to move around on a crowded yard. Nice indeed... I would think invaluable for the guys that have saw mills that need a way of moving logs.

Melissa, while my wife was watching some shorts about gardening this morning she showed me a video about keeping stones in place. We use rubber mulch in some of our beds and she thought it would keep the mulch along the edge from blowing out. I instantly thought of you. I had some of those stake pocket D-Rings for my car trailer, that I used to haul my tractor around....the stake pocket D-Rings are great, pull them out and put them in the D-Rings where I need them....very useful. They have weld on and bolt on stake pockets too, so you can add them wherever you want...very useful, and with the right ratchet straps, or chain hooks, you can use the stake pockets for anchor points.

We have tried a lot of different brand mini skid steers. Vermeer is our favorite. No other brand has the double hydro circuits. Big advantage when we use our Ryans rotating grapple. Don't need an electric solenoid to activate the other function which makes it super fast. Only negative about the radiator fan blowing out is it makes your legs cold when its below freezing outside. Best part is being able to jump on and off quickly and the visibility around the machine.

You bought the best of the bunch. Vermeer makes superb machines. It will outlast you Mike with normal care and maintenance. Of course like any new machine, it will take many hours to learn the "Feel" of the machine.Sidenote: A year ago I had a huge sugar maple taken down. It was at the corner of the house and some distance from the road. They had a Bobcat stand on. It was good but they really fought the low lift capacity. Saw him a month ago and he sold it. For Melissa's stone issue look into a clear pour polymer or perhaps clear epoxy.

DeepRoots Landscaping guys & CanopyTree guys, here, have the 160 and 2 Toro Dingos. All work fine but the 160 is mainly for the tree division but used by both divisions.
There are several products to apply to the River Pebbles but I just use simple dry Portland Cement sprinkled on top of pebbles, worked down into them with rake and applied 2nd & 3rd dusting. Later sprayed lightly with mist and let set. Next day check to see if another dusting is needed and mist to seal the top. By using a rake to get the powder down into the stone; the Portland won’t be seen. I do gravel driveways the same.

Welcome to the club! I run a ctx160 as part of my side hustle and that machine does some incredible work. One of the issue I had was two hydraulic fitting on the motor (located under that black front cover) come loose at 275 hours and another one and another one at 377 hours. So double check to make sure those stay tight. Also, there’s always lots of dirt building up around the hydraulic fill tank, so that usually needs cleanup.

Great machines. Service at the Cranberry Vermeer is awesome. Eric and his team are the best. We have 1200 hours on them with no drive motor issues. Also check out the CID brush cutter. They dont disappoint.

Seems like the perfect machine for the wood yard. The lift capacity was amazing, looked very stable. Two sets of hydraulics. I like the ease of stepping on and off, a huge plus when you get a few more years on ya. Great visability, versatility. I think you knocked it out of the park with this choice. Looking forward to see how all the attachments work.

    Hey Mike,
I watch every video but rarely comment. I wanted to tell you I use that machine at work for a tree company and absolutely love it. It has so much power for the size machine. I would also recommend getting a grapple from Ryan's equipment. That is what was recommended by where we bought the machine. It is a wonderful attachment! Best wishes, Bob

I look at this new machine and think what are you going to do with that? I said the same about the excavator when you bought that and you have answered that question about a thousand different time, good luck with it, you seem to always have it figured out.

Morning Mike I ran Bobcats loader for fifty years best skid steer ever, but as I got older and wiser because also had trouble getting on and off I tried a JCB loader where you get into the machine from the side. Will never go back to another machine, also with the telescope beam there isn’t anything you can’t do 😎

Interesting purchase. I knew it was going to be Vermeer by the huge hint you gave us on the last video. LOL. (the vermeer baseball cap was a thoughtful idea on your last video especially when you even touched the brim of your hat to kind of draw attention to it. loved it). But, I can't wait for a brush cutter to be purchased. We have farm land with pasture that has some tight spots for mowing that a 10ft brushhog won't get into. So, multi-flora rose bushes grow next to trees and fencerows or on hillsides I don't trust a 10ft brushhog pushing a tractor downhill. This would be a nice trimming machine.

Mike, this is not meant as a negative comment just my opinion. The only advantage I can see over your Kubota skid steer is that you can just hop in it instead of climbing in the Kubota. Lift capacity is lower and not as stable. My opinion is, I would have spent the money in the new tractor. Again not meant as a negative comment. Just my opinion.

The skid steer was a part of their Kubota partnership, and I'd assume that two things played into getting this
      1. This can be trailered to and from WV legally and I don't think thr skid steer could be without a CDL
      2. I'm assuming this is far more cost affective to replace with his own revenue.

Its looks as though you have a keeper there. It will really come in handy if you ever need something like that at the cabin. Plus it will probably use a lot less diesel. But you can get the Vermeer in tighter places. I do wonder though, true it picked up the basket of green red oak. But will it pick up a basket of wet green red oak. Stay safe!

Hi the Morgans. I enjoy your videos even more because we get to see more of your family, we know they do lots of work behind the seen. About the mini'skid...no need to worry about getting used to handling it because you're a natural operator. You attack the work at hand according to the size of machine you operate. Unlike some people that want to fill every square inch of the bucket. You know what I mean. I hope that you can pass that skill down to your grandkids. I'm sure Levi and the girls already have some of these skills. Keep up with the great videos. Oh oops I forgot to mention Melissa in the previous group. Mike, I like your outlook on life and the people that run the country.

Hi Mike, One feature that a lot of people may not appreciate is how tiring it can be to climb on and off of a skid steer or excavator, all day long. You and I do. The vermeer is much easier. Also , beside the fact that ingress and egress are easy, you don't have to walk under a raised load, a definite no-no. I think you're going to like it a lot. good luck and have fun with the new toy. Shalom/gw

This machine seems to make the most sense for your operation. Good purchase Mike. Wish I had one back in '90 when I cleared a couple of hundred trees to build our forever home. I had a Ford 8N and later, a DR Power Wagon, which, for what I was able to do with it, was a great back saver. But lots of manual labor.

Really like the new machine> Vermeer CTX 160> I call it the "Mini Beast" Skid Loader the "Beast". Very handy time saver, with all the attachments can do lots of work, probably good on fuel, and can maneuver in Wes Virginia Pines really well. It fits the trailer with the Can Am, and some attachments - its a WIN WIN WIN to me.. good job Mike! 💯🙏

Good morning! Regards the glue to bind the river gravel. Back in the 70’s, when I was in grad school at Texas A&M, they had sidewalks constructed from those kinds of rock and some kind of clear epoxy. They were formed in place and quite attractive. Seemed durable enough for foot traffic. The big drawback was that when wet, they were like an ice rink. If you treated your space with an irregular surface, it might not be as slick. But I saw a number of students slip and fall on them. I’m not sure of the brand name, but I think it was Prairie Film or something like that. Just be careful the kids (or even you grown ups!) don’t have a slick hazard there.

For the pebbles, we call it resin bound gravel, you get a firm base that is permeable and mix the gravel with the resin, smooth it out and when cured looks like grave sticks like tar and feathers.

I think this will be a great addition to all the work flow or household projects. What May don't see or know is the get a similar lift capacity or auxiliary hydraulic flow in a tractor changes the footprint of the machine, in comparison I would imagine you would be into a 85 plus horsepower tractor. Less chance of breaking drive components as you are driving low and slow carrying 2 tons ( rated to pick up 1650 full height). Front axles on tractors may not take the extra stress.
The only negative thing about that style of machine Is getting into a muddy situation where you bottom out the operators presence platform and it disables your functions because the ground is not allowing you to activate the switch. Some have put a switch inline others make different changes to the machine.
I love a good 4in1 bucket with teeth as a starter attachment, in my opinion it adds enough options in most cases to be able to handle the task or two without having to change to a special purpose attachment, keeping the purchase fees lower as well as maintaining and storage costs and space.... maybe it's just my luck, there is always a chance it didn't fit on the transport, or it is 10 minutes each trip to get it for a single pick. I would much rather have a mini skid over my sub compact tractor, it was double the investment, not in my budget at the time. I don't think Mike will sell (at least in the near future )the other skid loader. It was purchased for a task and purpose, as stated the lil guy is there to support and reduce operations costs. There may be some elements that aren't published that generate a need for the original skid or maybe just sound business practices, if it sits in the shed and is used for a few hours a year what is the cost of ownership? An oil change? It's paid for, it can be transported to either property and stay there for a month with out disrupting things at the other, with no rental fees.
