- Front differential bushing replacement on my H3 Hummer! My vehicle would "clunk" in the front end while shifting due to this severely worn crossmember bushing. After bushing replacement, it shifts smooth and feels better than ever! Let me know if you have any questions. :D

This is a simple solution to avoid buying the costly replacement cross-member with a pre-installed bushing. I relied on a local machine shop to press the old out and new in. For this solution, a press or machine shop is likely needed.

Great video been looking for someone to post this video for awhile thanks!
Hey Jose, thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful. I couldn't find one myself so figured I would make it. Let me know how yours goes!
@@H3Humper just got it installed today and it fixed the issue I was having! Really appreciate the help!
@@josealanis2912 I'm really happy to hear that! 🤓 I'm glad it resolved your issue!
I used a $139 Harbor freight on sale, usually 169- to press out and press in. Paid for in first use. Pressing in is easy with a little Harbor Freight synthetic grease. Pushing out old one should be done by a shop, but I got it out with a large washer and large nut, and went slow and careful and wore eye-protection. Torque all back to 74.
Nice work 😎 and great idea with the harbor freight press! Thank you for sharing the torque spec
I have a new clunk I hear while off roading in Moab on Fins & Things trail. Low and behold the help video I need comes from u!! The H3 Maintenance Master!!! Thank u bro!
It is so funny how consistent very specific issues are on vehicles haha. Sounds like you're having fun, anyway! I'm glad your new transfer-case is holding up out there, and you're welcome! Thank you! The swap is pretty simple with a hydraulic press or a machine shop. I previously used a machine shop in Colorado Springs, and I bet you could park on the street, walk over to have them swap them out, and re-install in the street, if needed! I'm pretty sure my H3's previous owners drove with the failed bushing for 100k+ miles.
Very helpful! Thanks!
Hey Tom, glad you found the video helpful! Thank you!
Very nice and very helpful thank you very much
My pleasure 🙏 Thank you 🤓
Thank you for aLL YOUR VIDEOS. stuck on caps sorry. Hoping for more videos. You make the best videos. And my mechanic actually looked up your video. H3
Hello again, Tom 🤓 I'm happy to know the videos have been helpful! I've got a handful more H3 repair videos recorded but have to make time to edit them. Glad your repair went smoothly!
I finally got an h3 of my own.
Happy to hear that! What year and color?
@@H3Humper black 09 alpha with the adventure package. I just happened to be on the lot with my wife as she was buying a new car. And there it was. I had to buy it.
@@hoganlegdrop2409 Nice find!
now that's a repair done right
You don't see me doing so too often these days. 😄
+Shaamuoy Baronville , thanks for your comment! I am happy you feel more confident after viewing the video. I chose to leave the front differential supported with a jack because it will continue swinging downwards if left unsupported. I also had to jack the differential upwards to re-installed the crossmember. Let me know how your project turns out!
Ok noted, and definitely I’ll update on my end
Update bushing changed and it shifts perfectly
@@shaamuoybaronville9869 awesome! I'm happy to know it all worked out for you 🤓
@@H3Humper I do have a next question what is your operating temperature like? Mine sits between half and 3/4.
@@shaamuoybaronville9869 My operating temperature usually sits at the half way mark on my gauge. However, I do not use A/C and I have a mechanical fan. I have heard of higher temp's depending on electric fan set-up and also if the A/C is on, the temp is usually higher. :)
As always great video! Can you tell me the torque for the bold bushing ( middle) and also the torque nuts 🔩 for both size of the crossmember ( that hold the crossmember ) Hummer h3 2007
I appreciate your words! The front differential assembly bolt (bushing bolt) is 100N.m (74 lb ft) and the crossmember nut (securing crossmember to frame) is 70 N.m (52 lb ft) plus 200 degrees angle, according to the "Frame & Underbody" manual found at h3humper.wordpress.com/hummer-h3-repair-manual .
Thanks for sharing. Mine's even more far gone than that, just noticed it doing a oil change and trans service. Hopefully a ball joint press can do the job or at least big hammer and a socket. Need to find a friend with a hydraulic press, I don't have the space and really don't need one often enough to justify buying one.
I hear you, for sure. It's one of those tools with very infrequent use for the most part. How did it go?
@@H3Humper Well the replacement bushing got delayed and I have to leave town before it came in. It's going to have to wait until I get back. It's probably been like that for quite a while, the skid plate seems to keep it from flopping around too much so I'm not too worried about the wife driving around with it like that while I'm gone.
Damn shipping delays... Let me know how the replacement goes. For me, it was well worth paying a local machine shop $20 to press the old bushing out and the new one in. I value the skin on my hands more than $20 haha. If you're interested in the machine shop route, I suggest looking for a small, family owned type machine shop. I've had good look finding those everywhere I've lived. I drove mine with a bad bushing for a long time, as well
Just baught an 06 h3. Couple issues...main one is the tyranny dipstick tube. I'm assuming the mounting tab is broken. Wondering if any chance you replaced yours and how difficult is it? I can't find any videos on it
Hello Larry, nice choice of vehicle! The transmission dipstick tube is a very quick replacement, I believe. There is a small support bracket with a single bolt to the exhaust side of the head. The tube slides into the transmission with no fastener (to my knowledge). Should be as easy as removing the tube and then re-attaching the new tube with the included bracket mount. I am not sure when I will make a video for it, but I will be sure to add it to my list! Let me know how it goes.
In the middle of this repair and running into issues getting the inner two bolts out on each end of the crossmember. They are hitting the A-arm. Did you run into this and if so, any helpful hints?
Hello Bryan! Do you happen to have the front end on a jack? If so, maybe try lowering it. If not on a jack, maybe try raising it. I am trying to recall if I experienced any thing similar. Another idea is to wack all four bolts as far out as possible, so they are only holding up the front (towards the front end of the vehicle) part of the crossmember, then wacking downwards or upwards on the crossmember itself. This would effectively change the exit angle of the cross member bolts, hopefully clearing the a-arms. Send me a pic and I might be able to help a bit more.
@@H3Humper Currently not lifted anywhere......going to give those both a shot, thanks!!!
Will this help with the clunk I get when I let off the gas to coast and then push the gas again to accelerate?
If the old bushing is bad, it should help with the clunk. If you pull off your skid plate, this differential bushing can be inspected quite easily. There are several other bushings and things possibly contributing to clunks, including slack in the driveline.
Hey idk if you're still answering questions but if so ... How much should I tighten the bushing once installed should the rubber depress at all ???
Hey there! I don't think I found a factory spec on the torque of the bushing. I think I just did "good and tight" on mine. I do not think the bushing rubber showed depression on mine.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Looks as there maybe some oil leaks from somewhere in the engine compartment. Could the oil caused the bushing to prematurely fail?
My pleasure! Great observation on noticing the oil dripping around the busing. I do believe this would cause the rubber bushing to prematurely fail. Did you figure out where your oil leak is coming from?
I need help. My hummer clunks when I put it in gear and so I bought the front. Differential Vibration stabilization mount.
But could not get the old one out due to the bolt was bent. Finally, a friend cut the bolt off.. After that, it was easy. Well, kind of I think I got the wrong size bolt because it's still doing the same thing and it's moving around. So do I need something else besides a bolt?
Hello there, sounds like the old one gave you quite a bit of grief! Does the new bolt feel like it is threading and seated properly? There are two more axle bushings, and those could also be in need of replacement. I didn't mention the other two in this video because mine were fine. There is an axle housing mount on both the driver and passenger sides of the axle. Try recording a video to see if the movement is coming from those locations. Best wishes on your repairs!
Just replaced this little thingy on mine plus the front driveshaft now I’m having issues with my transfer case any advice I know that you can rebuild them but I really could use some advice have a 2007 H3 Hummer four-wheel-drive
Sorry to hear that! What issues are you having with the transfer case?
Had a issue with my transfer case they were trying to tell me I needed rebuild but I took it to a dealer and he said it's a common issue because they use a PLASTIC folk shift🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ just DUMB... it's a $30 fix that shops won't tell you about.
Did you have substantial vibration while driving in addition to the clunking while shifting? I recently picked up a slightly neglected H3 and the bushing is shot and needs to be replaced, but not sure if it is a likely culprit for the drive line vibrating as well while moving. Great tutorial!
Hey Brian, glad to hear you've rescued an H3! Mine has a light vibration, as well, but I don't feel it is substantial, and it has persisted after the bushing replacement, unfortunately. Let me know if you track down your vibration and if replacing your bushing helps. Thanks!
Check your rack and pinion it has to bushing
I have a question. My hummer h3 2006 is running into every problem and I need a new radiator I would prefer a new fan but i can’t do all that high tech stuff don’t even own a drill yet but… what radiator with a new fan would you recommend?
I apologize for my delay and appreciate you comment. Sounds like you've been blessed with the GM problems haha. Welcome aboard. I would recommend a lightweight aluminum radiator of OEM quality and probably the OEM clutch fan. However, I would be sure the fault causing the previous radiator to fail is addressed. Sometime radiators can blow if a head gasket fails, which would happen again to a new radiator. What symptoms were you having with you old radiator?
All you did is simple. The main part that should be recorded was at removal of the bushing and installation of the bushing at the crossbar.
I recommend taking the crossmember to a machine shop to have the old bushing pressed out and the new bushing pressed in, as I explain in the video. 🤓 Getting it out and in by hand is not easy to do and I do not recommend trying to do so.
Hello there may i ask a question on the bolt size that was put back in using the torque wrench? My bolt and bushing went mia and trying to figure the bolt size. Thank you for the help and time.
And the threading of the bolt fine thread or not or where i cam get replacement bolt and the correct size. Thank you for the help.
Hey there, I imagine you likely figured out a solution by now. One option would be bringing the female clip the bolt threads into to a hardware store. There are thread checkers to show diameter and thread pitch. Then a person can buy a bolt with the correct diameter and thread pitch to replace the old one.
Can you share a link to where you bought the replacement bushing? M my H3 clunks between shifting from P to D or R. Thanks

@@H3Humper thanks bro. Did this fix your clunking issue when shifting?
@@B_nicholls You're welcome 🤓 Yes, the bushing was the source of my major clunking and the replacement eliminated it.
@@H3Humper awesome. Thanks again
Hello dear
Good day
Dear can you please share a video showing the heater core hose connections
As i bought h3 and unfortunately the heater core is bypassed and all the hoses are removed from engine
Hello Mehmood, I will do my best to get a video for you! I apologize for the delay. Have you resolved the issue yet?
Does this bushing by chance cause a knock when turning onto a right turn that’s a slight incline?
It could cause such a knock. An easy way to test is to put a camera under the front axle while shifting from reverse to park. If the bushing is bad, the movement of the axle is quite obvious on camera.
@@H3Humperturns out rust ate the frame on the rear most mount for the driver side leaf spring. Can’t find anyone local to me who can weld new metal in there and fix that due to liability. So it’s currently a death trap.
Keep an eye on your rear leaf spring connections if these break going down the road at speed you’ll loose the rear axel and it gets sketchy as hell in traffic.
Sadly my h3 is now good for much of nothing but parts. Good body, good engine and good transmission good rims but the frame is fcked.
@@Raven-HQ holy smokes! Sorry about your frame situation. I'm glad you're safe for the time being. What's your plan with it now?
Where did you get the parts?
amzn.to/2X1J3Nj from Amazon 🤓 They're only $20!
How long does this process take?
Hey there Debo, this whole process took about 3 hours. The most time consuming part was waiting for my auto machinist shop to press out the old sleeve and press in the new bushing because he was busy. Let me know if you have any questions about the process!
@@H3Humper thanks for the reply. Got mines done. And yes 3 hours is correct. And the pressing the bushing was a challenge. Had to find a shop to do it.
@@GrandmaDebo Happy to know yours went smoothly! It's nice having a shop press them in and out.
Torque specs if you know them. 74ish?
74 ft pounds
Is this the bushing that causes a clunk when you put the truck in reverse/drive? Great videos bud, keep them coming! Thanks
Hello Bilal, thank you! Yes, this is one of the issues leading to a clunk when switching between reverse and drive. 🧐
Yeah, when I Make a slow sharp turn going forward or reverse it feels like it dragging than when I slowly straightened out it feels fine again, only 3xs it made a hard clunging sound, I was thinking it was the Intermediate steering shaft, or probably both. Whats your thoughts?
I think having someone in the vehicle and switching from drive to reverse with the brake engaged would give you a chance to look at the underside from safely outside to see if you can notice where excessive play is.
What size bolt do i use?
Hey Shelly, I do not know what the bolt size is. You may be able to locate the OEM part# on a parts website, however. I would start there.
0:39 what’s did you spray on it??

What is the torque for that bolt on the bushing?
I’m just wondering what that torque was on that bolt for the bushing.
@@sundown8906 Hey there, sorry for my late response! The torque spec from the crossmember and the front drive axle mounting bolt is 74 ft/lbs. How did replacement go? h3humper.files.wordpress.com/2021/09/hummer-h3-front-drive-axle-1.pdf

@@sundown8906 very cool 😎 Having a machine shop around is so nice!
