    Hi, I am a highschool student and for a fun project I decided to build an electric pit bike, as well as building a custom battery to fit the spacing required. I custom built a 52v 28.8ah (14s12p) battery with samsung cells and before I put the bms (50a 14s Daly BMS) on, I tested the pack with a voltmeter and it read around 58.6 volts, which was perfect. However, when I soldered the bms wires on, and put on the connector, it read 14.5 volts. That was around a month ago, and now when I test it the voltmeter reads around 9.5 volts. I checked all of the bms wires and they were fine, so I don’t understand how I am getting that voltage. I saw online that sometimes a BMS can be “asleep” and that you can wake it up by charging, so I tried that and it didn’t even charge. I am now feeling very frustrated and defeated, because everything went so well until the BMS part. Everything in terms of the nickel strips and batteries is good, but it is just something with the BMS. I wasn’t able to get a very good solder on the main positive wire, so that could be the issue. This is all for an electric pit bike project that I’m doing, and I just feel very defeated now, which is why I’m seeking external help. Sorry for the very long email, but this is just the problem that I am facing. Do you know a possible fix or any way I can contact you for you to provide further help. Thanks in advance.

    I tried this as well and still get the packs going into a safe mode from over amping a 500watt motor on a old razor dirtbike. These packs are from the scooter 5.2 a packs you sell. It’s all stock gearing. With a kiddo on it it does ok but with an adult it can go to safe mode.

    • @ebikeengineer
      @ebikeengineer Před 2 lety +2

      Note that your 500W may draw more than 500w with more weight, going up hills, pretty much anytime using full throttle. My 750w mid drive can (and will) pull up to 1300w giving the right conditions. However if you keep pulling more than the motor is rated for an extended period for you can damage the motor or controller. ETA: Doing the math these would work with a 250W or 350W e-bike (like the kind Jehu has in that other video).

    For a higher power ebike (72v 1-2kw), would it make more sense to make a big one of these (2s6p for 72v 30a), or get the imperfect 40cell packs (2s for 72v 25a)? I am fine soldering new connectors, though if the 40 cell packs bms doesn't work, I would have to buy a new bms and do more wiring.

    Thanks Jehu for making those videos, they definitely helps the early beginners.
    The fact that you. have to do those video because of the questions asked in your comments, and by your potential buyers, frightens me a little.
    I don't want to be disrespectful, and I know you gotta start somewhere, but I have the impression, lot's of people try to bite way more than they can chew.
    I mean, many questions asked, imply people ignoring high school level stuff.
    Like what is implied by putting cells in series or parallel.
    Ignoring ohm's law (it's really basic and simple).
    Not understanding Ah or Wh, and the relation to the battery voltage.
    Guys, please, it's not that hard, please get some education on those topics:
    - Ohm's law
    - What V, A, W, Wh, C means in realtion to each other
    - What is implied by putting cells in series or parallel
    Trust me, by knowing those basic stuff, you'll save yourself from buying something not fitted to your needs (and being frustrated). And more importantly, you'll vastly reduce the chance of getting hurt while handling those fiercy things.

      @@MaxGoddur Oh heck no, especially those 10S2P packs. Now a battery pusing 54v at full charge is a 48v motor (most of which can use 52v packs which charge up to 58v). If you have such a bike (as I do) then JAG35 has some 52v packs in right now (up to 20 amps). lt is possible to use 36v packs but you'd need to wire multiple together then use a step up or step down transformer (which is wasteful) depending on how you wired it.
