The Sangakkara cover drive is a thing of beauty.
It really bugs me when commentators go on and on about batsmen knowing whether they've hit the ball or not. We have seen plenty of examples, thanks to DRS technology, that show that batsmen don't always know. If there was nothing on HotSpot then it obviously wasn't much of an edge and, if nothing else, maybe Matthews thought that he had hit the ground. In short, Matthews would not have reviewed if he had known that he hit it and he is a good batsman, so Boycott is objectively wrong. It's easy for him and those from previous generations to assume that they always knew whether or not they hit it but there was no technology around to confirm that or otherwise, so it's just an assumption.
yes but hotspot was a flawed technology and was known for not picking up edges. matthews is obviously a good batsman and i expect that he reviewed it because the rest of the batting order was lacking in ability and maybe if there was a bit of doubt in his mind then he has to review it even if he has hit it because no body else will have the ability to go and stabilise the innings.
@@NewCluesVR , I suspect that you may be at least partially right. Watching this again, the way Matthews kept looking back while he was deciding whether to review makes me think that he felt something but wasn't sure whether it was bat hitting ground or ball hitting bat. I suspect that he was asking his partner whether it looked like he may have hit the ground and, in the end, decided it was worth the gamble to review and hope that it was the ground for the very reason you mentioned.
That said, my comment was more about the commentators certainty that a batsman always knows whether they've hit the ball or not. That is just objectively false. They are confident that they are correct every time but there's no way to check that. There could be times that Boycott himself thought he had hit it when he didn't or thought he did when he didn't. There could also be times that he just didn't know because there was a lot happening. I vividly recall an occasion when Ian Bell was given out LBW and didn't review, only for HotSpot to show a clear edge. I doubt that Boycott doesn't think that Bell wasn't a good batsman. I was expressing my annoyance at commentators' confidence that they know something that they clearly don't know, not anything about Matthews in particular.
