  • How to perform stalls, a 1 minute tutorial for poi spinning! Learn the basics of poi dancing in a small, bite-sized video that covers the basics of stalls. Got a suggestion for a 1 minute tutorial? Let me know down in the comments!
Stalls can be a bit of a challenge, so it's best to start by doing everything you can to make them easier. First, shorten up your poi so they're no longer than about elbow length. Second: see if you can spin with slightly heavier poi. These tend to result in cleaner stalls.
To perform stalls, imagine your poi is spinning around an imaginary circle in front of you that has a box placed around it. Any stall you perform will land in a corner of this box. To do this, wait until one of your poi passes through the point where the circle touches the box just before that corner that you want to stall to, then move your hand straight out toward this intersection.
This will result in the poi head switching from moving around the outside of the circle to moving around the outside of the box, following its perimeter until it reaches the corner. To exit the stall, pull your hand back toward the center of the circle and it will start the poi turning back the other way.
Drill all the different corners you can stall your poi to. For things like up stalls and top stalls, there are some visualizations that occasionally help. For up stalls, imagine you're trying to slide your hand underneath the poi head. For top stalls, imagine you're trying to get your hand just slighting above and to the side of the poi head.
Practice these with both hands in all combinations of timing and direction!
