  • Next up on our tour of basic poi tricks while we wait out the outbreak is poi stalls! In this tutorial on poi spinning basics I'll guide you through why we use stalls and how you make them happen. I'll also lay on a bit of theory for you so that you can understand more about how we fit poi spinning tricks together so that we can put together a poi combo in tomorrow's video!

    This is perfect, because I've been working on trying to get a one-handed stall while my other keeps spinning! Very difficult, especially with my non-dominant hand

    I love you man, I started spinning poi in February of this year and really started to pick it up around april because of quarantine. I'm already doing a few intermediate tricks and making my own planned routines and I credit 90% of it to you :) you're a wonderful teacher

    Lol I'm spinning potatoes in reusable cloth bags 😂 love these videos! I think I'll make some sock poi tonight so I can keep practicing 😊 my goal is to be able to do a two minute flow by December. If I can do that, I'm going to buy myself some led poi! 😁 Ty for all your videos!

      That's what I like to hear! TBH I've actually long thought the pedagogy I used in those older videos was a little off. Part of how I'm teaching this time around is with the idea that I want to get people moving with the prop sooner rather than later. Let's see how it works!

    Okay Drex. I have seen you recommending learning stalls a few times. I was happy once I learned the 3-beat weave and kind of stayed there in my comfort zone for awhile. During this time I've finally started practicing stalls and holy cow they were harder than I thought they would be! This circle/square map of thinking of it is a game changer! thank you for sharing this! I will try it out again.

    The sun is setting too fast to get a flow for all the moves... Still need to work on one hand haha... Coffee and poi spinning in the morning it is 😁 GTA say I'm really getting all your explanations... Got to a point where it thought it was going to get all too technical and then you put the circle and box up and hey presto it all clicked for me. Nice one!

    Been watching and you're tutoring is really informative and easy to yake in and learn from. 1. Question- how long does the length of line have to be from poi to hand or does it not matter. Please answer if you can. Thanks and keep these tutorials up their really helpful

  • @deniseah6129
    @deniseah6129 Před 4 lety +1

    Thank you for the video. The square/circle idea is helpful. However, I will point out that on the down stalls, which I am trying to perfect, your hand doesn't go "straight" to the side, but arcs somewhat in the direction of spin before it reaches the point of square/circle intersection. FWIW, I've played with how much "slack" is in the line (I seem to do better when I make sure there is some "slack" in the line when I move my hand toward the side), and also found that the more I move my hand to the outside of the spin when I'm "dropping" the poi, the better the stall. Notice that Drex's arm is about straight on most (though not all) of his stalls.

    do you have any in-depth videos on mathematical analysis of spinning, ie: biomechanics, trigonometric functions regarding cycloids, inverse functions, as well as Δ of leash length/head mass as it relates to velocity and momentum? I have a general idea of what I'm doing since I use rope darts, but the switch over is not very easy for me to grasp with more complex techniques when time is factored in with the aforementioned changes, and I would like to see the math so it will make more sense.
