      The higher proof showcases more of the grain and wood tannins so yes the higher the proof the better it tastes. However the flip side of that is adding a drop or two of water to a barrel proof whiskey separates out some of the oils which would be from near the tails cut and the char of the barrel and brings out intense character. It can be good or bad depending on the whiskey.

    When my grandfather was alive, he would often get samplers of all sorts of liquor: bourbon, whiskey, rum, vodka. He would have a briefcase full of these samplers, and he would just give them all away to people he knew: Friends, family, even cashiers that he saw regularly. When he passed, we had tray full of those samplers next to his casket with a sign that said “Have one on Chuck.” Seeing this video kind of reminded me of that story.

      Though it's humorous, it's also spot on. Whiskey has thousands of compounds in it and each person will pick up different smells and tastes from the same whiskey. And since cherries don't have a "cherry odor chemical" that makes them smell like cherries, but instead have a combination of chemicals that gives them a typical cherry smell, if those compounds or ones similar to it show up in whiskey, it will remind the taster of cherries. The other weird thing is the perception of like odors and flavors. If a beer has a skunky odor, some will absolutely gag over it while others will enjoy it because it reminds them of the smell of the woods at the lake when they were a kid.

    Actually, bourbon is not fermented within the final aging barrel. It is fermented within a different barrel, distilled, then aged within a charred oak barrel. Fun fact, every batch of bourbon has to be made with a freshly charred barrel, as barrels cannot be reused. This is where the very high amounts of oak flavor come from. Also, bourbon is more like the Soju of America. The Makgeolli of America is more like Napa valley wine.

    • @GeraldWalls
      @GeraldWalls Před 5 měsíci +1

      _Actually_ there is no fermentation inside a barrel. All fermentation is done before distilling. Once the fermentation is deemed completed the liquid is heated to the point that the alcohol (and some other important chemicals) evaporate and these gases are passed through (often) a metal coiled tube, condensing back into a liquid. This liquid may be additionally distilled for additional purification or use directly for maximum impurities and flavor.
      Some alcohols are distilled multiple times, such as Irish whisky and vodka, while others pride themselves on the flavor of the distilled source and are only distilled once. A prime example of the once-distilled beverage is Shouchu and Soju. These have a pronounced difference in flavor depending on the source of the initial fermented source. (Unfortunately in the US outside of the East and West Coast is it quite difficult to find a variety of either Shouchu or Soju. I would really like to try one that is majority Sweet Potato based.)

    "I feel alive!" 😂 There's a Bourbon drinker for you. I actually do like Jim Beam, but I don't like Jack Daniels. Personal taste I guess. The Jim Beam distillery is only a few miles away from me, so that might be an influence. When I first moved to Korea I tried makgeolli and it was afwul. But I soon discovered that what I had tried was the cheapest junk on the market. I tried good makgeolli about a year later, and it was quite good. But it was unfair to tell these people that Bourbon is the makgeolli of the US, since they expected it to be smooth. Bourbon has a burn that does take some getting used to.

    When I was stationed in Korea (American Soldier), Koreans loved our liquor (and our cigarettes). My understanding was import tariffs made it much more expensive than just buying it on post. We went so far as to just randomly share liquor shots with unknown ajushis on the subway. Good times. I'd be happy to share shots with any KATUSA I served with.

      Peanut butter whiskey goes great in coffee, literally half a shot will make it taste like a mocha, especially if you like a bit of sugar in it( and a little bit of milk, who knows maybe you like it black). Shit surprised me, i was bored and found something great

    Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon, it is a Tennessee whiskey. As the saying goes, "all bourbons are whiskey but not all whiskeys are bourbon."

      @@HBC423 Most bourbon is made in Kentucky, but it's not necessary for it to be made there to be called a bourbon. The charcoal filtering before Jack Daniels is barreled doesn't disqualify it from being classified as a bourbon. The short answer of why it's not considered a bourbon is that Jack Daniels didn't want their whiskey to be classified as a bourbon after operations started back up after prohibition, and spent considerable time and energy convincing the government that it isn't a bourbon so they could be branded as a whiskey. The arguments about it being what happens in their production is essentially arguing semantics, as it makes it different, but doesn't disqualify it from the classification.

      @@SammyNineFingers For a whiskey to call itself bourbon, its mash must contain at least 51 per cent corn. The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, the distillate must be stored in charred new oak barrels at 125 proof or less, and it must not contain any additives. Nothing more nothing less. The charcoal filtering is what disqualifies Jack Daniels as a bourbon.

      @SammyNineFingers Před 2 lety +4

      @@TheDeadStretch Except Virgin also Charcoal filters their whiskey and it's still considered a bourbon, as does Jim Beam Choice, and Kentucky Deluxe, and Heaven Hill, and many others. As I said Jack Daniels meets all the qualifications for being considered a bourbon, but they hounded the government enough after prohibition ended that they essentially got a pass on being required to label themselves as a bourbon by convincing federal officials that their process differed enough to not be considered a bourbon.

      Straight from Jack Daniel's website..... "Jack Daniels IS NOT a bourbon..."
      "The reason it is not called a bourbon is the additional step that Jack Daniels take when making their whiskey. Before the distillate is placed into barrels for ageing, it is slowly filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal."

      I've always thought the literally definition to be somewhat asinine. You are, of course, correct, but that does not stop Jack Daniels from tasting like bourbon...or bourbon from tasting like Jack Daniels. Don't get me wrong though, Jack Daniels is over-priced and overrated, Evan Williams is better than Jack Daniels, and it's much less expensive. At least it used to be, I've not drank in many years. No real reason, just stopped drinking. Damnit man...now I want some bourbon!
