As Robert Burns said, there’s whisky, and there’s good whisky, but there’s no such thing as bad whisky.
To let Damon know, bourbon, by law, must be aged in new charred oak barrels. If it’s been used, it’s just American Straight Whiskey.
I’m a teetotaler and appreciate this insight. It’s fascinating to learn the differentiations of liquor.
@Brentisimo You’d be even more fascinated if you tried them 😆
and let Ciara know that Bourbon is not a rye, it must also by law be at least 51% corn.
It must be 51% corn as well.
“This one will tell you a story and this one will sing you a song.”
Loved that line.
A great analogy for the complexity of flavors. Maybe I just haven't had a large enough variety of the Irish, but they've always seemed shallow in their depth of flavors, even while being very very good. Bourbons and Rye can be very complex by comparison, even if you're using a similar mash. Regional grains and styling in the USA can create that complexity.
I will say that two of the things we Americans and the Irish can get along on are our preferences for 1: drinking and 2: fighting. :D

I never tasted Irish Whiskey until 10 years ago when a guy from Ireland opened a Pub here in North Carolina. I started trying them even though I’m not a big drinker. I noticed a huge amount of variety among the Irish whiskeys I tried. I liked all of them pretty well and there was something about each that seemed different than the American bourbon and whiskey I’ve tried. I can’t drink now because of health reasons. I wish I’d had a chance to try a few different kinds of Scotch whiskey too before I had to give it up.
Loved this. 'This one would tell you a story. This one will sing you a song.' What delightful people.

I would say that the Black Barrel would have been tough because there are similarities between the black barrel and bourbon color and flavorwise. Its definitely my favorite Jameson variety, with Bullet my favorite bourbon.
I'm still so conflicted. It's all so good...
You need a re-tasting session 😉
re-taste yes! Just to make sure!
You all need to convince them to do a Yukon Jack whiskey tasting... The very best of the best. Warm, slightly honeyed, and a kick... Yep, I need to go get a bottle now.
And this is the BEST segment yet. Adding Martin and Dermot would've made it a....10/10!!
Great job TRY!!!
Good thing to remember is that most Irish whiskey is blended..that smoothes things out..there are single irish whiskies..I love them too.
When you say “blended” what do you mean? Blended from different barrels to gain more consistency? If so, small batch bourbon (which is what was showcased here) is the same.
I'm not much of a drinker but I enjoy videos like this a lot. I rarely drink whiskey straight. I usually mix it with soda, preferably diet 7 Up and the one I love the most and I buy when I can afford it is Canadian Club Small Batch.
At first, I wondered, "Why isn't Martin here?" Then I remembered that Martin would give them both 10's...
Would've loved to see Martin and Dermot do this shoot.
Love it. How those folks are not absolutely hammered after 8 shots is beyond me. I love them all, such lovely people.

I was genuinely offended by the half full glasses the others were leaving behind. So much good bourbon and whiskey left undrunk.
Hell if they'll fly me over there I'd be happy to be their liquor disposal / resident drunk.

Wow. Darren giving Ciara a run for her money in whiskey expertise. Ciara's still the best, though.
I think Ciara's specialty is the fortitude to drink anything and remain composed. Darren's palate is astounding, though.
To be fair, her strength lies in the ability to drink high proof spirits...and not die. Lol. Her sense of taste being what it is, would be lesser than someone that tastes more of the spirit.
Darren is/was a tour guide at a whiskey distillery in Dublin. He definitely knows his whiskey.
Darren is def spot on with knowing which is which. Good Job!

'Something that'll make you make noises only dolphins can hear' is a fantastic metric, Paddy. XD I love it.

I really enjoyed the variance of the testers. Darren and Ciara sipping, aerating, getting the nose, basically doing what you would expect a taster to do. Meanwhile Paddy and Irish Jesus just fucking hammering them back.
i am not a whisky drinker but i did a taste test of a number of scotch, whisky, rye, and bourbon and I have to give it to the irish, they have perfected the art. The rest they're distinct but more suited to specific tastes maybe. Being a Canadian I like rye the best for mixing as it has a taste that sort of fades into the background.
The differences in the analytical approaches between the pairs are fascinating.
I’ve always been impressed with Ciara’s knowledge of all things alcoholic. But I agree with her that Darren led her an a magical mystery tour. He knows his stuff! Good job all of you.
The last one was close because they used the newer Black Barrel. It's a fair bit spicier than the old stuff that came in the dark green bottles.
As an American, I really do love Irish whiskey, but Bourbon’s burn and Smokey flavors always win in my book.

"This one would tell you a story. This one would sing you a song." I love it!!! Lol
Darren really seems to know his whiskeys. I do have to say that there were repeated comments that this was whiskey vs Bourbon, but Bourbon is in fact whiskey.
I am American. My first experiences with whiskey (as is probably the case for most people) was budget blended whiskeys, usually in cocktails. My first time really tasting good whiskeys was when I was touring Ireland at the age of 31. For some time, Irish whiskey was all I drank (in terms of whiskey), but I became a confirmed Scotch drinker about a decade later. It wasn't until I was in my early 50s that I first started trying good quality American whiskey, focusing on Bourbons. Now 62, I have developed very broad taste of whiskeys and can honestly say that truly fine examples are made in many countries, and as I have never been one with very nationalist tendencies, I will just as happily drink a fine whiskey from the US, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Taiwan, or wherever, and I will never say one country is categorically best.
I love how they are taking the small batch irish whiskeys you can't even find in most liquor stores and comparing it to Jim Bean which almost counts as wood flavored mouthwash
Wild turkey and jim beam are two different bourbons.
@@josepheller8395 yes completely different.
@Fuk Utube my mistake. I commented before finishing the video. I saw where they used beam in another comparison. I haven't had irish whiskey except for Jameson's.
Wild Turkey 101 is a great bargain bourbon... And most of the people who tried it actually liked it more if I recall
Yea the wild turkey is pretty special for a major brand, I would have preferred to see makers 46 or 101 instead of devils cut
All bourbons are aged in brand-new oak barrels that have been charred. Each barrel is used only once. That's what gives it such a unique flavor.
Those used bourbon barrels, of course, are often sold off to be used as aging barrels for something else, including some wines.
A very imported fact, probably the most significant difference between a bourbon and a whisk(e)y.
They're often sold to the Jameson distillery in Ireland - so Black Barrel for example would've been finished in a bourbon barrel
A funny thing is that a lot of used Bourbon barrels end up as Irish Whiskey barrels.
That's one criteria. The full list is: "For a whiskey to call itself bourbon, its mash, the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled, must contain at least 51% corn. (The rest of the mash is usually filled out with malted barley and either rye or wheat.) The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, put into the barrel at 125 proof or less, and it must not contain any additives. The distillate must be aged in a new charred oak barrel."
I’ve seen them get thrown into a wood chipper then sold as BBQ wood chips.
"This one would tell you a story...this one would sing you a song" I love that!
Due to the difference in climate, a year in Kentucky in a new barrel is like 4+ years in an used barrel in Ireland.
Darren is a damn sommelier or something! Excellent paring & challenge episode between Irish Whiskey & American Bourbon.
So here is the interesting Fact, Bourbon needs to be aged in new white oak barrels, and once they are used once, they cant be used to make any more bourbons.....So they sell those barrels to Irish and Scotch manufacturers for cheap, So Bourbon manufacturing makes Irish Whiskey cheaper to produce.
The owner of the company I work for gets Jim beam barrels and three semi trucks of wine grapes then sell it all to his rich buddies to make wine and ferment the grapes in the whiskey barrels, we'd work under the table on weekends what we'd call wine days lol but there was always some bourbon left in the barrels not much but he'd buy like 30 barrels so there'd be enough collectively for each of us to get a half bottle. Come Christmas we'd each get a bottle of bourbon barrel wine
Yeah. It was lobbied by the barrel makers to keep their jobs.
Taiwanese Kavalan Ex Bourbon is delicious stuff.
@@kingjellybean9795 Cooper & Thief makes wine aged in bourbon barrels and it's excellent.

@@christopherhoff1696 don't know why that matters to my comment, but yes and there are many different levels of charring, and to my understanding there is no minimum level or max level of charring for it to be called bourbon.

Honestly, that sentence is just the human condition.
Darren and Ciara nailed the origin each time well done. Was delighted to see Wild Turkey lead off for the US :) Paddy not so sure you "make a sound only dolphins can hear" will encourage some to try whiskey.
Great content. I've watched several "TRY" whiskey videos, and I enjoy the conversations.
Witty personalities driving creative dialog.
As a fan of the Costco/Kirkland brand, I would enjoy hearing your tribe's opinions regarding the Kirkland branded liquors.
There are 2-3 bourbons, a "Kentucky" whiskey, some blended scotches, some single malts, an Irish whiskey, and an Irish cream.
Obviously, they wouldn't prevail in taste tests against the top tier brands, but my guess is they could fare well against preferable whiskeys.
Just an idea if you ever visit the US, again, or if you can find Kirkland booze over there.
Thanks again for the nifty video.
