What if you only ate meat for 30 days. Would you gain muscle and burn a lot of fat by avoiding carbohydrates and processed foods or would you suffer from nutrition deficiencies? Restricting yourself to only eating meat does sound extreme, yet it's exactly what a diet plan that continues to grow in popularity known as the carnivore diet recommends you do for better health, better body composition, and more energy. While the idea may seem radical, it's gained quite a large following over the last few years, including from some well-known individuals like Jordan Peterson who claims that it can provide various health benefits. But what does the science actually say about what happens to your body if you only eat meat?
Well, first there are some immediate physiological changes that you'll experience. This is because when you switch to a meat-only diet, your body will undergo a significant metabolic shift. Carbohydrates found in foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains are the body's default source of energy that gets broken down and stored in the form of glucose and glycogen. When you eliminate carbs and in turn glucose from your diet, your body has to look for alternative fuel sources. That's where ketosis comes into play. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body burns fat and ketones for energy instead of carbohydrates. Ketones and ketoacids are alternative fuel sources for your body that are made when glucose is in short supply. They're produced in the liver from the breakdown of fats when there’s not enough sugar or glucose to supply the body's fuel needs. Within a few days of starting a meat-only diet, you'll likely enter ketosis, but this can take up two weeks.
Ketosis is linked to benefits like making it easier to lose weight. For example, research shows that you’ll feel less hungry and more full when in ketosis. The high protein and high-fat content of meat is also associated with appetite suppression and feeling more satiated, which is why a carnivore diet often leads to weight loss automatically without having to count calories (1). Also since the carnivore diet is so highly restrictive it automatically eliminates many high-calorie foods like grains, sugars, and processed snacks. This reduction in caloric intake is very likely to lead to fat loss on its own. Another reason why you're likely to lose a substantial amount of body fat over the course of 30 days is that protein has a higher thermic effect of food (TEF) compared to carbohydrates and fats, meaning it requires more energy to digest. This can potentially increase metabolism, helping with weight and fat loss.
You might also have an easier time building muscle, especially if you’re currently eating very little meat or no meat at all. That’s because research links eating meat to building more muscle. For example, we have a study that found that in older men, combining resistance training with a diet that included meat led to greater increases in muscle growth compared to lifting weights without eating meat. (2) Of course this was based on older men and more importantly many people don't get enough protein per day as it is, so just by raising the amount of protein you take in per day will help you build more muscle if you're currently not taking in enough. Meat itself is likely not any more special of a protein source for gaining muscle than things like chicken, fish, or eggs, but it is likely better at building muscle than vegan protein sources like tofu, beans, and seitan. For example in another study, scientists concluded that "a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower muscle mass index than an omnivorous diet even at the same protein intake level." (3)
Another benefit that you can experience as the days go by is relief from food sensitivities or allergies if you happen to be allergic or sensitive to certain foods. It's believed that plants have developed defense mechanisms over thousands of years to prevent them from being eaten so they can grow undisturbed. For example, lectins are proteins found in various plant foods like beans, legumes, and certain grains, and some people believe they can cause digestive discomfort and inflammation. By excluding all plant-based foods containing lectins, the carnivore diet potentially provides relief to individuals who have these sensitivities. Also, eating a meat-based diet eliminates potential allergens like gluten, commonly found in wheat, barley, and rye, which can also cause digestive upset and other negative symptoms like fatigue and headaches. Moving beyond gluten and lectins, some people have allergies or sensitivities to specific plant compounds or proteins. For example, people with....

Is the weight loss fat and water? I'm already underweight (22% body fat). I am trying to gradually switch to a carnivore diet. So, I suppose a carnivore diet combined with weight training will lead to fat loss and weight gain

According to studies, cholesterol and saturated fats have limited to do with heart disease. It is systemic inflammation and insulin resistance that cause heart disease
This is from a paper published by Dr Aseem Malhotra MD Cardiologist, in the British journal of Sports Medicine titled *Saturated fat does not clog the arteries: coronary heart disease is a chronic inflammatory condition, the risk of which can be effectively reduced from healthy lifestyle interventions*
Linking high cholesterol to heart disease is based on the hypothesis of Dr Ancel Keys. This is poor correlation. More than two-thirds of people who had heart attacks, had normal cholesterol levels.
If you have insulin resistance, Sugars will get converted into triglycerides. If your HbA1c (which is a reliable marker for insulin resistance) is normal and HDL and triglycerides are normal, then high LDL is good cholesterol that is not a concern
This new marker for bad cholesterol will collapse the statin industry. Most of the diabetics have high cholesterol. If they fix their insulin resistance, then statins become obsolete
People with low cholesterol have the risk of developing dementia. It is why one of the side effects of statins is mild cognitive impairment and dementia
Cholesterol is needed for a healthy brain. Brain is made up of myelin, which needs cholesterol
Dr Mary T Newport MD neonatologist and an Alzheimer's expert, employs the keto diet on her patients to cure Alzheimer's
      Her books:
      1) The Complete Book of Ketones: A Practical Guide to Ketogenic Diets and Ketone Supplements
      2) Alzheimer's Disease: What if There Was a Cure?
      3) Clearly Keto: For Healthy Brain Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention
Till the 1920's, the keto diet had been used as the treatment for epilepsy before anti-seizure drugs were invented. Now, the keto diet is only used as the standard treatment for treatment resistant epilepsy

@@abukittyI've been carnivore for over a year - I started over 30% body fat and initially had no interest in doing excercise. Once I got down to around 20% body fat I felt energised and I now run or workout every day. I got down to 72kg, 19% body fat and now I'm gaining weight, 74kg today yet my waist measurement is lower than it was at 72kg. So basically yes, I am gaining weight but losing fat, so it must be muscle (I can lift more weight or do a lot more reps so this tracks).

I'm 3.5 months on Carnivore and I'm getting shredded and building muscle. My diet before consisted of meat and tons of fruits/veg - little carbs. I now lift more and run further. No more gas - like none. No bloating. No sudden urges to go. No stomach bubbles. Very small 1per day bowel moments with a fraction of the smell. Basically the best digestion experience ever. My skin cleared up and I hit my target of losing 18lbs within the first 50 days. I feel mentally pumped. The real reason I tried this tho, was for the claims ppl made that Carnivore eliminates joint pain / inflammation - they were right! My joints have NEVER been this good!! • @ytfeelslikenorthkorea

I'm on carnivore pretty much for over a year (with occasional slip ups here and there with alcohol). Did I loose a lot of weight - yes (but). Do I feel stronger? Yes (but). Do I feel healthier? Yes (but). The 'but' is - I had 150 gym days in the last 365days, with 17 Munros climbed, 500km+ of runs, all together over 20km of elevation. So is that the diet or the effort? I dropped from 30%+ of fat content to 16%, lost over 83lbs in weight at the same time. My blood pressure spikes subsided significantly, but still occur. So it's not a magic bullet - don't go int keto thinking about it (as most Americans do) through the lens of 'that one thing I need to do to rectify decades of neglect and eating garbage'. What I can say for sure is - MY body can't tolerate carbs/sugar as it used to - if I slip and have a piece of pizza, next day I wake up demolished, pretty much hangovered, takes a few days to go back to normal. For my body, carbs are toxins. When I limit my diet to meat and eggs, I don't have such symptoms. When I fast, I sleep less, feel rested in the morning. So... Make your own choice, based on your own individual body reaction, NOT BASED ON IDEOLOGY (yes, f-u vegans for terrorising everyone else to go plant, I AM NOT A COW!).

My mother once told me she didn’t understand why she couldn’t graze like cows. I tried to explain. She wasn’t kidding. I fed her really well when she nearly died. Her mind cleared, she showed up, she felt good. Soon after she was no longer living with me she returned to her old ways of mostly not eating. When we basically starve ourselves, no matter what we eat or don’t eat, it’s called an eating disorder. Yes, everyone needs some balance and to figure out their personal needs. By going carnivore for a short period and then introducing foods with nutrients not covered by the carnivore diet, we can figure out exactly what we need to eat. Instead of asking “what do I feel like eating? Ask “what does my body need right now?” If you’re eating ANYTHING that is not allowing you to communicate in this way with your body, such as plant based foods and processed foods, you will not hear it talking to you. And yes, grazing for a human is never an option. Sorry mom.

Do more investigation on high cholesterol. When you have a high carb diet, you will have small dense particle cholesterol which is dangerous for heart disease and clots. If you eat meat, the cholesterol you get with it is large fluffy cholesterol which is not dangerous. There is a blood test you can take to know your numbers. If you have low triglycerides and you have good levels of HDL cholesterol, most likely you will have the large fluffy cholesterol but it takes time for triglycerides to lower if you have been on a high carb diet. Fish oil can lower triglycerides and raise HDL if you're in a rush or eat salmon, sardines and other fish high in omega 3's will also do the same.

im down 60lbs in about 6 months. Its rough in the beginning, the runs, carb withdrawal, having to say no to everything. But if you stay with it you will have tons of benefits. I highly suggest it. Dr ken berry, shawn baker and homestead how are my favorite carnivore channels. Some things I noticed. Beware of pork, eggs and dairy some people are allergic but don't realize how bad it makes them feel until its cut out. You will sleep less, its ok just do more things. Dont sit on youtube all day lol. You may poo less and or its smaller in volume. thats ok but you shouldn't need to strain or bear down. Some gentle effort or no effort is normal but if you are sweating or taking a long time to get things done its probably cheese or dehydration. Add more water with electrolytes. Don't be afraid of salt, its your friend. getting the runs even after a few weeks? cut back on fats or remove dairy and switch to tallow. Eat until you are stuffed. I am up to eating a 1lb NY strip and feeling just over full.

The keto flu happens usually because of an electrolyte imbalance due to the diet shift. That same imbalance can also cause the diarrhea or constipation. So if you’re transitioning add electrolytes. It normal on the carnivore diet to only need to go 1 maybe 2 times a week but that doesn’t mean it’s constipation. Also if you don’t have keto flu but still get diarrhea then your stomach acid might be low or you don’t have enough bile to properly digest the extra fat you’re now eating so take either Apple cider vinegar or Betaine hydrochloride. If you like bile take Ox bile supplements or Tudca. Also dairy is a staple in most carnivorous diets. Also recently it’s been found that saturated fats aren’t bad for you and that a high LDL is linked to longer mortality. I wish I remembered the articles to site them but I’m at work lol. Also a recent study from the university of Chicago shows that beef consumption can help combat Cancer and tumors. The article was released November of 2023

i was on a carnivore diet at the start of the first lockdown.
Best shape i was ever in, and at my strongest point ever, felt easier to get into routines of all kinds. From exercise, work and relaxing.
But after 6 months of pure carnivore, i just got tired of eating the "same" thing every day. so went for more keto, which felt nicer and easier to stay to.
I didn't have a single of these health issues whatsoever. Not even the adapting phase.
after ups and downs in life, i've been back to high carb diets and lazy fastfood meals.
Slowly trying to get back to carnivore again, and already generally feel better.
I will say, it's not for everybody.
If you think about getting into it, but have long history of high carb and fastfood meals as part of your daily diet... you're gonna have a bad time.

I have found with over 10 years of sheer experimentation and blood work done, that the optimal diet for humans is mainly animal products, a bit of fats (animal if possible) with, taken with said products (instead of eating it separately so you avoid overconsumption), trying to avoid foods that increase weight like milk, bread and potatoes (you can have some, just not very frequently, and if you drink milk try to go for the unpasteurized natural one) in that order of priority from more weight generated to less (obesity is the biggest risk factor that can lead to high blood pressure and diabetes as well as heart disease, so it's very important to control our weight). Also have a bit of carbohydrates to have a well balanced testosterone hormonal level (which also leads to good mood and healthy mental state throughout the day), and above all this, eat the foods you like, even if they are slightly unhealthy, like chocolate, sweet buns and the so, because scientific studies have shown that depression is as bad if not worse than smoking cigarettes daily.
So, in summary, eat mainly an animals product diet with a bit of fats/carbohydrates and be flexible with yourself, so you are happy and your health improves, this is what I believe is the optimal diet for humans with over a 1/10 of a century experience and have gone through vegan hell and everything in between.

Very good, however really missed one of the main points relating to keto flu.
Getting into ketosis is usually signalled by an large increase in urine output.
Above and beyond your normal daily output assuming similar water/fluid intake.
Humans are ill adapted to retaining sodium, any time water is released sodium is invariably released as well.
Since you're not on a Western/highly processed diet anymore where salt is added to everything, you need to insure you are getting at least 1 tsp of salt per day. Lot of people focus on electrolytes like Magnesium, Potassium, however the truth is the keto flu is primarily a signal that your body has lost more salt than it should, and you aren't ingesting enough to prevent rather nasty osmotic effects in the brain and the body.

The specifics of a carnivore diet vary significantly. Many people include Eggs and butter for example. Me - I eat eggs, butter, bacon, grass fed beef, beef tallow, the occasional cup of home made beef bone broth, and also have some wild caught salmon once a week. I also have chicken occasionally or even less often some pork product I see on sale like back ribs or peameal bacon. Some people with extreme food sensitivity do the lion diet version, just beef and salt, but that's not for everyone.

One of the best breakdowns on the Carnivore diet I have ever seen. He literally covered every facet of this diet in a short video...A++!!
This diet works crazy fast for weight loss and pretty quickly for cognitive boost, sense of well being and enhanced sleep---particularly if you incorporate real grass fed butter for the fats and butyric acid.
If you are worried about constipation or B.M.'s just make sure you eat enough fats (butter, bacon, meats with fattier content i.e. ribeye steaks). This is important for the ketosis component and will provide your system with the "lubrication" it needs.
Also, you exponentially increase your odds of not getting keto-flu symptoms if you stay super hydrated. I added hydration packets to all the water I drank every day and I never experienced the flu.
Finally, doing this diet is akin to doing an elimination diet, hence all the healing miracles you hear. It cleared up my psoriasis. So if you decide to add plants again or go back to your former diet, do it slowly and see how every food affects you.
    Good luck!
