FIXED: Desktop Icons Not Showing Properly In Win 8,8.1,10 | How To Restore Missing Shortcut Icons

- Are you frustrated that your desktop icons not showing properly? In this video, I will share how to fix the annoying problem wherein the shortcut icons get replaced by generic file icon by Windows. Once done implementing this easy fix, Windows rebuilds the icon cache and you would be able to see all the icons as they were previously. This fix would work in Windows 8 and 8.1. This solution apparently also works for Windows 10 as well.

TROUBLESHOOTING & ALTERNATE SOLUTION

If the solution shown in the video does not work, then you may try the following troubleshooters:
1. Make sure you are deleting the icon cache file from the correct profile/folder.
2. Restart your device.
DISCLAIMER: Another fix involves changing registry values. So make sure to take backup of your REGISTRY before you try this. If you do anything incorrectly, you will risk ruining your device. So be *VERY CAREFUL & DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK*. If you are ok with this, try the steps below:
1. Press Windows+R (to launch Run.exe)
2. In the Run program, type there regedit and hit enter
3. Then in the Registry Editor program. follow this folder path route:
HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / WINDOWS NT / CurrenVersion / Winlogon
4. Now click on Winlogon and after clicking then look right side pane.
5. Here you have to find the Item called “shell” and click on twice (Double click)
6. In the Value Data Edit box, Type Explorer.exe (The value of this key *Explorer.exe*) then click on OK
7. Now *restart your computer*, and after restart problem should be fixed.

Are you on a shared system? Is there anyone else who is an Admin of your device? If you are the Admin, then you should be able to access the Admin folder.

If you accidentally close task manager right after you close Windows Explorer, DO NOT FREAK OUT. I know It won't let you open anything, but task manager has its own keyboard shortcut to open it. Just do Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open task manager. After that, do as the video follows.

I accidentally closed mine, and I shut down my laptop by using the power button, and it goes back to normal and the icon of the app appeared, but I still did the windows explorer exe thingy to be sure, and is it ok to delete the icon cache permanently? Thanks.

Thanks! This is way less convoluted that messing with system32 files. And is essential for me as I am rocking empty names on shortcuts(alt+255 as a name, just add another one if you want multiple empty names, for those interested)

Bruh there's no admin folder on my users folder, can u tell me why?
That's probably because:
1. You are not logged in as Admin.
2. Your account doesn't have Admin rights.
3. The name of your Admin account is NOT Admin. It might be some other account. It can be even the account that you are currently logged in.
In any of the cases, try to find the *IconCache.db* file and that will help you in resolving the issue.
help when i went to the file location the iconcache.db was missing i made sure hidden items are shown but still nothing.
I went to the icon cache folder but when I click on it, it just gives a warning and the ok button to access it is greyed out. Any ideas of what to do? I'm on windows 10
Just wanna say I like how you explained this method in a much shorter and concise manner than other people on YT that give the same method but cram a bunch of other useless info into their video.
Also, I think restarting Windows Explorer is more efficient than ending it and creating the new task, unless if simply restarting doesn't fix the issue for some people.

Kudos for the excellent repair instructions. My Dell "Support Assist" icon was periodically blanking out to a white file icon. I followed your video instructions and they worked perfectly! My icons disappeared from desktop when I increased text size in display setting. “Show desktop” is checked. The recycle bin icon isn’t visible but there is a blank transparent window tile covering the recycle bin icon. It’s weird. Do you think the delete icon cache will resolve this problem. I feel like I tried everything.

Yes you need the old shortcut to be present in order for the solution to work.
If you have already deleted the shortcut, don't worry. Just right click on the EXE file and select the Send to > Desktop option. That will create a new working shortcut.

Yes, it works with all shortcut icons on Desktop. It won't work if you have uninstalled the game or the icon can't find the game EXE file.

But I have an issue. Whenever I am moving that shortcut into a folder, its icon gets deleted yet again. But when I move it again to desktop, the icon comes back. Please help me out this.
Try to delete that icon and recreate it from the EXE file of the software by right clicking on it and select the Send to Desktop option.

That means the EXE file does not exist in the target location. Either someone deleted the EXE file or it could have been removed by your Antivirus software.

*Important note for everyone*: If the blank icon has a cloud on the bottom left, right click the icon, go to properties and close it again, after that, it should show a green tick. Then you just do all the steps again.

Unfortunately no. It won't work with Taskbar icons. It only fixes bad Desktop icons.

I changed one of my app icons on desktop to resemble Internet explorer . Now I can't find the default app icon.
Don't worry. Just right click on the EXE file of the software and select the Send to Desktop > Create Shortcut option. That should create the original shortcut icon on the desktop for you.
