hey Dr. Aziz, I just wanted to say you're story pretty much described me. I've always been more naturally introverted but it really developed and got out of hand in middle school. Meeting new people and just being myself became so difficult and nothing changed in highschool. But as you said I thought it would get better in college. Well needless to say last year was my freshman year in college and nothing changed. Right now I'm at that turning point you described where I've finally realized I can make it different. I just wanted to say that your videos have really inspired me and are guiding me along the process of bettering myself and THANK YOU!
The past couple of days I've been doing things that make me uncomfortable and although scary it feels great and freeing afterwards.

the greatest success that ive ever had was by following the Seans Shy Program (i found it on google) - I found it the most useful method that I have ever tried.

I just came across your videos because as you mentioned your heart was aching, so was mine as I was supposed to host the event we had today in the college and I was really prepared and things like hosting are something that I want to do, i know am not the best at it and that's why I want to do it.
Now you see, just when I got ahold of the mic the girl who's our supposed leader comes and tells me "You don't have to do it, let XYZ continue" and it was so embarassing that I wanted to cry, I couldn't believe she was doing this to me at end after I've worked so much.
Then I told this to my friend and she suggested me to not compare myself with other people and become more stern and have a firm opinion and speak up for myself and that's when I realised that I was moving in circles since forever and it needs to stop. She told me that just because I don't want to hurt people doesn't mean they'll walk all over me and snatch away something for which I've worked.
Following her suggestions, I messaged the headgirl of the club and made it clear that how unacceptable her act was and that she can't keep running back to me everytime the team's in crisis and then use me and throw as she pleases.
Later, she told me it was her bad and I shouldn't be disappointed but I still am.
Her stunt made me realise that I am not myself when I am facing a crowd, infact I become so under confident that I'm unable to held my head high and look toward the crowd. I become super nervous that I even forget how I should be standing, where I shall be keeping my hands, my posture and my facial expression and what to speak.
Your videos are so helpful and it's my first time here and I am determined to come at the top notch and get rid of this stage phobia and I'm sure your videos are gonna help me out.
    ~ Regards
    from India.🙏

I am 26 and ever since I was 11 I have had intense anxiety to ask women out. I had a coaching once which was 5 hours for 500 Euros (basically all the money I had at 22). I asked out 4 women, felt terrible, lost the money, and 4 years later I am still procrastinating.
I guess what is the most horrible is the idea that I just cannot do it. I have listened to your audiobook and was very motivated.. I went to a street festival here in Germany and all my heart and courage completely disappeared. There was a feeling of complete impossibility. This feeling was so disheartening that I just went to bed for the rest of the day. I can climb up the social anxiety ladder to a certain point but once I have to ask out a woman there is a sudden, horrible halt and a feeling of absolute shame. Even though before I knew my worth I knew my values and I knew it was time to do this and that I was ready. Do you know this ?
My inner critic then is beating me up for not being brave enough.. I want this to stop, I would do anything to go the way you did. Anything. The things I am then thinking of purposely (like what I have lost to anxiety and how it is worth it ... and that I will never get out of this if I don't do it now, theyy lost impact completely).

Hi Aziz, I have a question. In the beginning of this video, you say you were born shy. Do you really believe that or do you think you got shy through your upbringing or something else external? I'm really curious about this because I also have struggled with shyness and I have read a lot about this topic. And from what I've learned is that nobody's born shy, you become it by external factors such as parenting. Or do you think it can also be purely genetic? So i'm really curious about what you have to say about this because I can tell you're really an expert on this.

+17rgm Great questions. Here's my short answer... Some kids are born with more "behavioral inhibition" - that means they tend to shy away from as much direct contact. This can be observed in infants. Perhaps it's a kind of shnyess.
BUT, all the stuff we associate with shyness and social anxiety - fear of negative outcomes, low self-esteem, assuming others are rejecting us and won't like us - that is all learned from negative experiences and BS beliefs in our heads.
To get a more in depth discussion, you can listen to my podcast episode on the topic:
      shrinkfortheshyguy.com/what-is-social-anxiety/

      @17rgm Před 8 lety +2

+Get More Confidence I have just read the script of that podcast and I understand what you mean now. You CAN get born shy (being born with behavioral inhibition), but you cannot be born to become a shy guy/man. Being born with behavioral inhibition doesn't mean you become a shy person later in life. It's about your surroundings and experiences and how you interpret these experiences to become that. Did I get that right?
