This album is mostly fictional with some of her real experiences and emotions mixed in (like actual folklore it’s made up but usually based in real events in some way). Thank you for giving her a chance. A lot of people don’t know what’s she’s capable of. She is the biggest pop star and songwriter we have in this era, she writes all her songs, she directed all of her most recent music videos, she also fights for musician rights by obtaining her masters (she is currently re-recording all of her 6 albums and now we’re in 4 out of six). I think a lot of people don’t give her a chance because the capitalistic nature of music industry and the fact that she was a 16 years old teenage girl when she first started didn’t help her to get the credits she deserved. She written songs about girlhood and growing up believing in love stories and often time those kind of topics were dismissed (when you are young they assume you know nothing right?). But in actuality, she paved the path for women in music in genZ era with her songwriting and honesty. She didn’t pretend to be an adult and sing about adult stuff or partying or being wasted like most of the teenage bangers at that time. She just wrote mundane stuffs that she romanticized. Now she is 32 and her songwriting also matured. This is why a lot of die hard swifties would defend her in the frontline (and have parasocial delusion lol) because we basically growing up along with her creation.

You should look up what this album is about and what Cardigan is about. Genius is a good place to find what the song is about and the lyrics. There is also a music video for Cardigan which is considered one of her best. Taylor also produces her own music videos for the last 4-5 years. Folklore is storytelling about other made-up characters and places except for two songs on the album, My TearsRricochet and Peace (at least that's what her fans think). There are also 3 songs on the album that are connected by three different teenage characters in a love triangle with their prospective on their part in the storyline. So far I've been enjoying both of your analyses. This is going to ramble a bit. Her bass player Amos Heller (since '07) has worked with other artists. His fave is Lover's The Archer. Last year she mentioned how she split her music in categories: "Quill," "Fountain" and "Glitter Gel Pen" - ranges from serious to fun.
From what I've noticed: Folklore has been enjoyed by dad-rock fans (like Phoebe Bridgers- Punisher). She worked with Aaron Dessner from The National & Big Red Machine. Bon Iver was on Exile. The Alcott (TN) & Renegade (BRM) are good. The sister album is Evermore- similar vibe. Disney+ has the acoustic doc of the Folklore songs- 1st time they played together. Folklore was recorded during pandemic- everything compiled long distance.
Guys (like some metal heads) have enjoyed her Speak Now album- one said Haunted (w/ strings) was a fave. Another said he liked Red's All too well (10 minute version- sad girl autumn version). That song was the longest song to top Hot 100 (for 1 week) - unseated American Pie.
From the start she knew her vision- to write music in real time - kinda like a personal POV time capsule. She started young- but realized there were many who held the same dream. She had a family that were able to support her financial (something the many hold against her) & emotionally. She knew she wasn't the strongest singer, musician or writer so she worked with those who could help her be better.

There’s also “a friend to all is a friend to none/ chase two girls, lose the one”. To your credit, the analysis on Peter losing Wendy because Wendy grew up was great because Cardigan (AKA Betty) did grow up. I personally don’t think “leavin like a father, running like water” is appreciated enough by anyone that reacts to this song but it’s one of my favorites because it invokes a feeling that a lot of people can understand. In the end, I don’t know if you understood the song other than it being sad. Did you know the narrator was cheated on? That she was reminiscing?

Thanks for thoughtful conversations. I’m a late blooming Taylor fan and have been the most impressed by The Folklore Album. The layers, pacing of the instruments- it’s not rushed- the lyrics, and her tones are simply beautiful. It’s true that the Folklore songs are mostly fictional but she can easily access emotions that a person would feel under extreme duress or in moments of hopelessness. I highly recommend Epiphany, This Is Me Trying and My Tears Ricochet. My Tears Ricochet is a drawn from her personal experience . Her record company blocked her from buying her own masters and sold them from under her nose to a terrible human being. Hence why she’s currently re-recording and re-releasing all of her albums. She deserves to own her own music. Thanks again for sharing this with us! ❤

Someone else mentioned it but I think Taylor's work is best appreciated when you approach it like a piece of poetry or prose.
Reading or watching something about the song beforehand, learning about the inspiration, the feelings she's trying to evoke, the reasons behind her choices actually adds a whole pile of layers to the experience. There are a few documentary style videos and lots of behind the scenes, the making of a song videos. You can just google "meaning behind Taylor Swift " and there will be a bunch of articles and analysis.
I'm 44 and only became a fan recently. I never "didn't" like her, I was just a decade older so when she was singing about young love I was up to my elbows in diapers and bills and wasn't really the target audience.
I'm going to very gently suggest that *some* of the resistance you're feeling to really letting yourselves get into her music **might** be a little teeny bit of internalised misogyny you need to unpack.
I say this as a direct response to the way you interpreted many of the messages in this track seemingly through the lens of how women are perceived by society, which is fairly surface level, and you seemed a little reluctant to identify too personally to anything she was saying.
I think if you can be brave enough to lean into your feminine side and always assume her writing is drawn from the complex inner world of an individual rather than an empty persona like "heartbroken girl" or something you'd really enjoy it immensely and add a whole new layer to your world of music appreciation.
If you search for metalhead or musician react to Taylor Swift you'll find many many men that you'd probably identify with closely, discovering and falling in love with her music.

I think something to keep in mind, when it comes to her fan demographic range is how long she's been making music for (considering she's only 33). Her debut country album came out in 2006(self written from the start), her top charting song was something she wrote for her 9th grade talent show. By album 3 she was 19. Folklore is her 8th studio album, it came out in 2020. Not only does she deliberately experiment with her sound and genre with every album, which increases the chances of someone finding *something* they like from her at this point, but she also covers a huge demographic.
Her music covers her experiences as a "young girl" from ages 13-33. Those who grew up with her and are in their 30s/40s might be quieter about it, but they exist, and any girl between the age of 13-33 finding her music even now could find relateability. She has NOT always been beloved, teen girl things are often immediately dismissed as less than, and the media narratives surrounding her like to focus more on her personal life or her reputation based on where she began rather than notice the way she has grown.
She's not perfect by any means, and she's certainly mainstream at this point. But I think that's because there's something for everyone, sonically or lyrically. I used to deny even liking her music (as a teen girl) because she was so polarising (teen girls either worshipped her or thought she was the worst). I don't think everyone has to like her, but I also don't think she belongs in the same boxes and image we attributed to her in 2012 when "Shake it off" was on the radio 24/7 lol.

You guys DIDN'T like CRURL SUMMER??!! Cruel summer the pop perfection!? what about it that made u not like? The production? Coz the songwriting doesn't get better for a pop song! But if u dont like pop that's a thing. It's okay. Maybe i should watch ur reaction.
    anyway.
    About CARDIGAN !
it's basically a songwriting showoff on folklore, she's kinda flexing like a rapper, going bar after bar. So it's gonna be hard to explain (bcoz it has so many layers and different call-outs,) to someone who's THIS new to her songwriting style! You need to get a whole album down so you can see the whole process, not that immediately you'll understand like right now u didn't but you will get something and slowly evolve ur ears for her lyrics. Maybe start with folklore coz you dont like pop right? So start with the indie record. Or maybe challenge yourself and start With MIDNIGHTS.
My fave thing about her songwriting is that she paints a vivid picture of the situation and write very complicated feelings and emotions in very simple words very simple lyrics, the first time you listen to it you understand it but the more you think about it the more you understand the depth of it. For cardigan there's personal and fictional sides both to this song. Fictionally it's a teenage love triangle story thats going on in the album folklore. There are 3 different songs from each of their prospectives. Cardigan is from Betty's prospective. Basically she was in relationship with james and they had a fight normal teenage stuff(if you listen to the track 14 betty on folklore you'll see the story unpack) but james cheated on betty with another girl (Augustine, 8th track) during the summer. Then by the end of summer he realized he messed up he misses betty and wanna make it up to her. So a bit complicated story. basically that's the gist.
Now cardigan is from Betty's prospective but from around 10 years later looking back on that relationship and what James put her through! it's not explicitly said but if u analyze all 3 songs it's clear that betty forgives James and take him back (it's a controversial topic among fans) but anyway from cardigan it feels that even after taking him back, it didn't last all the way through. They eventually broke up. And In Cardigan she's talking about that high school experience was tough for her, and when she has no one she found James and he comforted her through her tough times (the cardigan metaphor basically). But then he cheated on her (chase 2 girls lose the 1) . Which is "u drew stars around my scars" (The cardigan metaphor) , "but now I'm bleeding" (He left her).
The whole song her reminiscing the good times (kissing dancing drunk under streetlights, sneaking into bars, spending weekends together etc.).
The main idea is that the song is a commentary on that whole experience when she's a grown up. The line that comes back time and time "when you are young they assume you know nothing", the wrong notion that's put upon kids teenagers that they're young they have no depth or understanding of the world or politics or life or pain (just like u said" She hasn't been through pain that much"), that stereotypical idea of people (on kids or in this case pop stars, 'she makes pop music she cant be deep'). kids or teenagers know a lot that they're not credited for. Anyway, here she's basically saying she knew everything when she was young (singing as a grownup), she knew that that heartbreak will kill her, linger like tattoo kiss, haunt her, and she also knew that he'll realize the mistake he made and he'll come back!. Her intuition was right. But he really put her through it.
The peter losing Wendy is really great one. Bcoz technically that's what happened in this story. He was leaving her (tried to change the ending by leaving her). But even when he came back he had to lose her bcoz he was "peter" he's never grown up but she had to grow up. She had to move out. If u listen to the song "betty" From james' prospective, he holds on to being 17 and not knowing anything as an excuse to messup the relationship. With time he hasn't changed but she's a lot mature and she wanted to grow up and focus on her career and life not stay the same. U get the idea!?
That is the whole point of the song. Now that she's grown, she's reminiscing it, the most important thing to her was when she felt like an old Cardigan, he put her on and said she's his fave. !!!
I REALLY HOPE YOU GET IT!!
    I KNOW IT'S A LOT, PLEASE READ!
IF U DO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
AND NEXT u should LISTEN TO "ALL TOO WELL( 10 MIN VERSION)

As a twenty something girl, I think the fear of being basic or liking the popular stuff because it's mainstream is pretty reasonable. I remember being afraid to express my love towards TS because I wanted to be unique. But hey, as I grew older I thought : well life's pretty short for only listening to artist on the basis of what you or other people deem cool. I adore Linkin Park and Mike but not because people (where I live) don't know them, I just like their music and lyrics. I do the same with Taylor, she is just that good, and I just want to consume good art, listen to some sick beats and enjoy things for the sake of enjoying ithem

Hello gentlemen, I very much enjoyed this reaction. The dynamic of two different types of music lovers reacting is very cool.
Folklore is a masterpiece of an album. If you like that song at all, you will probably love the majority of this album.
Taylor’s music spans so many different genres that even if you don’t love all of her music, which is fine, there is Taylor music for you somewhere in her catalog.
Her lyricism, and her storytelling are what sets her apart. And yes, a lot of her music or some of it may seem like it is for younger people, but she writes a lot of music based on her own experiences. However, we have all been young once and the beauty of her storytelling is in the way that she is able to paint such a vivid picture that you can remember that moment in time when you felt those things when you were younger.
Oh, and she is the queen of bridges. I’m glad you noticed that.
And if you love, sad songs, her catalog is full of beautiful, sad songs: my tears ricochet, all too well, bigger than the whole sky, last kiss, you’re losing me, Ronan, forever winter, etc
I’ve been a swiftie since 06 and I love watching people put aside their preconceived notions about what they think Taylor’s music is and then experiencing her with an open mind.
Looking forward to watching your journey. ❤

Cardigan is definitely one of the more popular songs off of Folklore. But I would argue thay August is probably the fan favorite. If you guys want something more metaphorical, a lot of the tracks on Midnights are more in that lane lyrically (albiet, definitely more pop sounding). The songs on Midnights tell the stories of 12 sleepless nights throughout her life. Maroon is my favorite track off the album and is chalk full of metaphor, using colors to really paint a picture and tell a story. Great reaction, guys!

You need to come at the lyrics on folklore like you're reading poertry, check out English Teacher KP if you want to delve into the lyrics more deeply. There are some subtle things missed here like "chase two girls, lose the one" and the double meaning of 'the one' as well as the call back to the Peter Pan reference in the reprise of the bridge where she mentions chasing shadows. The Peter Pan reference also has dual meaning as a boy who never wants to grow up and with it being about young love. All these things are intentional literary devices she repeatedly uses. Taylor Swift often has recurring themes in her work which are worth looking out for.

So we have this fictional story told in 3 parts on the album, a love triangle involving James, Betty and Augustine. You reacted to Cardigan which is Betty talking about that years later from the perspective of a grown woman. August is narrated through Augustine's eyes (she knew she was just a summer love) and Betty is James' version of all this confusion he created. I love how she created and told this story through the songs.

Also if you are afraid of connecting to a female artist - you should watch other male reactions who listen with hesitation but then learn to find themselves somewhere in it (and then turn full fan) That’s what music is for she has something for everyone.

Betty, August & Cardigan are all about an imaginary love triangle (Taylor said this during the Long Pond sessions). "Betty" happens first (from James POV) then "August" (from Augustine's POV) & "Cardigan" is Betty's POV looking back on the beginning of their love story. She echoes certain phases between the three songs too. She used Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds' kids names for 3 characters in "Betty" (with their permission)

Not sure if anyone recommend this song yet but This Is Me Trying deals with a lot of adult themes. She discusses what the song means in the Long Pond Studio Sessions but the first verse is about someone who is constantly messing up in life and drives out to this overlook and decides to turn around and drive home and that was an act of them trying. The next verse is about someone who felt they had a lot of potential but fell behind and turned to drinking and now everyday is trying not too. A fictional song but one that might resonate with you wanting some more adult themes. Taylor is also the queen of a heartbreak song, try Right Where You Left Me

Redemption!!! I love the imagery of feeling found and beloved after feeling used and discarded. Especially watching the music video for Cardigan, (while some of the lyrics may reference personal relationships), the imagery is clearly about her relationship to her music/creative outlet/fans. I feel it speaks to her longevity as an artist and that she would be doing this no matter how popular she was. When the world turned against her - she still made music, she still did what she loved, and her fans stood by her and her music saved her.
Dr. Taylor Allison Swift knew from the jump to treat her fans seriously and not take them for granted, even if the rest of the world just saw them as silly teen girls listening to silly teen music. (I include myself as I am older then her and a woman.) I think it speaks to how unseriously we take young girls and women in our society and devalue what they like and enjoy. Anyways the music video is beautiful.

Much better! My husband is also a metalhead but will listen to TS with me. She plays lots of instruments in addition to writing her own music. You’ve gotten good suggestions on songs. Cardigan is part of a trilogy. But a real example of her writing is All Too Well, 10 min version. You have to have the lyrics up. There is also a short film that goes with it that she directed. But I would hear the song once first.

It’s fictional but it’s connected to two other songs on the album “August” and “Betty”. Cardigan is about the girl who’s “Betty” from the song “Betty” and the girl that they guy singing in Betty cheated on her with is the girl in the song August. So it’s a fictional love triangle. She’s an amazing story teller.

she created a sound that is as soft and comfortable as an old, favorite cardigan. I went to music school, too - vocal music performance/opera variety. stop looking at it as a Swift song and listen to the piece as a whole. give the music the respect it deserves and learn about the songwriter or don't contextualize your video as musicians listening - basically you're just a couple of guys at this point.

"When I felt like an old cardigan, you put me on and said I was your favorite" isn't deep enough for you? Also has a double meaning, in the sense that he chose her despite her feeling worthless AND also "put her on" by lying to her/cheating on her. This is one story in a love triangle throughout Folklore. Again, I appreciate yall trying to listen to more of her catalogue but it doesn't work if you aren't actually listening to the lyrics

I'm an elder emo lol and i was a fan of Taylor Swift from her debut album. It didn't make sense to any of my friends because (especially her earlier work) was the exact opposite of the other music i was listening to. Kill the contrarian urges in your soul because its sooooo much better than you can even imagine at this stage of the introduction to her body of work. Folklore, evermore, and midnights will probably be the albums you would enjoy the most. They're her 3 most recent albums, and they're all concept albums so they're best enjoyed front to back if you can swing that. Either way you'll be blown away i promise. Her singles could never do her discography justice.

I think the metaphor is, if anything, that most of us don't know everything when we're young but the narrator is a romantic and she saw all the immaturity, but knew one day he'd turn around and see her worth and come back.
shocked you didn't have more to say about the metaphors in the bridge though, especially if you guys enjoy metaphorical writing. the subject might be a teen love story (a fictional love triangle, "august" and "betty" are the other two songs in the narrative), but "you drew scars around my stars but now I'm bleeding" "leaving like a father running like water" "cause I knew you, steppin' on the last train, marked me like a bloodstain"... pretty eloquent symbolic ways to describe teen love.
