Sail Life - Sailing to Ireland đźđȘ our first overnight sail â”ïž
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 18. 06. 2022
- We leave the Isles of Scilly and sail 135 NM north to Ireland. This is our first overnight passage together aboard Athena. We head straight to Cork and reprovision the boat for our summer in Ireland. I also program our CZone digital switching to allow us to turn on and off the nav lights from our chartplotters.

Best dolphin footage ever. I really appreciated the other sailing and running rigging shots as well. Very entertaining as always.
Indeed. I also liked the evening shots of the glowing lights of Athena and the sea and horizon at dusk.
Your comprehension of what you read , along with your calm demeanor of approaching projects or explaining where you are and what your doing is incredible. I could sit and listen to you talk all day you have no stress in your voice no matter what your doing . If you two plan to have children you sir are going to make one hell of a father .
Bullshit.
Athena is in tremendous shape, she's got all the bells and whistles. My favorite youtube boat by far. I smile every time the intro says 'a somewhat extensive refit'.. Her xwing hard dodger is the cherry on top. have fun you 2!
Athena and Uma are by far the top two youtube boats.
He literally had to rebuild the entire boat.
He got royally ripped off by the previous owner.
I think its fair to say that youâve nailed the transition from DIY channel to sailing and cruising channel with your usual casual and competent style. Have been watching from your first videos, through the rebuild and can honestly say yours is one of the top channels on CZcams.
Some of the best dolphin footage I've seen
Agreed - that footage I think trumps my own experiences!
For the record, Cork is a city. It's a beautiful location and that part of our coastline is out of this world IMO. You're both very welcome and hope you enjoy the stay and hospitality.
I wouldn't call Cork City beautiful. Its a typical port city. Functional more than aesthetically pleasing. Like every other port on the island. There are good pubs and lots of places to explore. Sadly, the plate glass fronted shopping streets could be anywhere. The West Cork coastline is something special. As is Kerry, which is further West. To really wind up a Corkonian, keep calling the place a town.
Just a bit of history for you: across the river from where you're staying (Cork Harbour Marina) is the small town of Cobh (pronounced Cove). Starting at the time of the famine in Ireland (1845), that was the port from which most of the 6 million Irish people who emigrated to North America left. Back then, it was known as Queenstown and in 1912 it was also the final port from which the Titanic set sail to cross the Atlantic.
@j lee Emigrants, not refugees. And history, not trivia.
I think you might be pleasantly surprised at just how friendly most of the Irish are. It's a great place and away from the cities it's surprisingly 'quaint'. Very pleasant. Enjoy.
and I am current
Put on my Sail Life Tshirt for the great accomplishment of getting current with one of my favorite CZcams channels
Watched EXACTLY 471 Sail Life videos... almost 7,000 minutes - LOL... Athena is amazing.
I know exactly zero about sailing but watching Mads gut her and make Athena a mobile luxury apartment was amazing.
Enjoy your adventures Mads & Ava. My wife & I were able to travel when we were young and had no kids... Even the bad places were still adventures.
Try not to apologize for following your dreams... they are your dreams & do not have to conform to anyone else's idea of best.
Finally I know he is fine but I still miss Joukill
Ahhhhh....Kerry Gold butter....yum.
you would be insane to attempt an Atlantic crossing without a curling iron!
Ava is now officially as British as the Queen. She speaks of herself as "we"
âA somewhat extensive refitâ, the understatement of the century.
Been watching for so long, and as much as I have loved the DIY episodes, this ep really makes me think that this channel is just getting better. It's so exciting to see the sailing adventure happen!
Great that you enjoyed Cork City. Talk tomorrow. Tim
The "money shot" was of Athena's beautiful white hull slicing through the sea! đ€©
I don't see why you were nervous about your "new phase of youtube content" , top notch sailing content! Well done!
Ava is absolutely hilarious!! đ€Łđ€Łđ€ŁReally enjoying your touring/sailing content!
Canât wait đ to see her liquor up đ„
Wow Mads, that was one of the best dolphin videos, I have seen on sailing videos. Mad skills, Mads
She is the most gorgeous boat. Your shared experiences are a real treat. Thank you
Recently binged watched your story. The content, narration, production, and editing, is just fantastic; The dolphin shot was beautiful! Bravo
The we are getting wasted comment got me. Its really good to see you guys sailing.
I have to say it again the paint on the boat looks like glass. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it was done with a roller and brush just an outstanding finish. For the past 1.5 years I thought I had missed the much anticipated systems integrations video. I will rest better knowing I didn't miss the digital navigation lights program video. Lol stay safe.
Mads, hull looks great. All that glorious sanding!
You will need another switch for the steaming light when you use the engine.
Best dolphin shots I've seen so far is not a bad start to the sailing channel
Great to meet you on the fuel dock in Crosshaven. Thank you for visiting Ireland and hope you enjoyed all. We made it to France and having a great time. Hope our paths cross again. Safe sailing.
Been following you since the start on Oblix. Disappointed to miss ye in Cork. Good luck with your trip to West Cork. Sean
Hiya to my very favourite sailing bloggers, or even just sailers.
Thank you for a wonderful video of your first overnight. As someone who gets seasick looking at a puddle, you have my very full sympathy for your problem. The bit doing the programing you lost me as always but the rest I got. Your voice is perfect for blogging, so soothing and melodious, a real pleasure to hear. I so wish I could have come and helped you with your, somewhat extensive rebuild. It has always been somewhat of a highlight to receive and watch your latest episode every Sunday, lo these many years. I love the idea of you and Ava travelling our world learning about the peoples and lands you visit and look forward to learning too via this channel.
Fair winds and following seas, Steve...
Hysterical. Keep it up. đšđŠ
Enjoy, Ireland is on my bucket list
Didnât think Iâd enjoy the sailing as much as the diy. I was wrong. Keep up the good work!!
I'm enjoying your videos, strangely, even without sanding. Life is often a puzzle.đ
This is hilarious for me. I enjoy sailing about as much as I would traveling on a small motorhome that can only travel at 10 mph across a lumpy featureless desert. BUT, you two are so charming that although I tuned in for the sanding, I remain. I was eating a BBQed hamburger not long ago and realized that the perfect bite near the interior cannot be achieved by tidy little bites with a knife and fork. Itâs the combination of the meat, the tang of the onion, the acidic note of the tomato and the crunch of the lettuce that crosses the finish line with the taste Bud tiny fists in the air. It isnât lutefisk after all.
Love the vids! That bow shot while sailing was nice the hull is "So Shiny" looking "Pretty Dang Spiffy" đ
Love the outtakes...
Excellent boat!
Great video - really enjoyed the dolphin footage! Have a great time in Ireland!
Such a fun, entertaining episode with soo cool shots during sailing! Thanks a lot!
the dolphin video was amazing. it looks like you two are having a great time.
Wow those beautiful dolphins. That was awesome
Loved the Dolphin clip
love the shots of the castle! while you initially attracted me because of the boat projects, I really like the adventure aspect that you are doing now! Keep up the great work!
Excellent episode! A Glorious sunrise after a night passage is always nice!
She's really funny. You'll a sense of humor to cruise successfully.
Hello Guys, I have watched your videos for a good while now. Your boat has turned out very nice and I like all that you both have done to her. Looks as though Athena will make you a fine vessel. God's speed. Hello from Dorian , Houston Texas
brilliantly entertaining episode. As a long lived native Irishman I can tell you that bottle would not be long uncorked and consumed. yummm
Ah the old country. One of the most expensive places on the planet. Beautiful job on the boat . Sheâs very attractive indeed.
Your videos have gotten better and better! Iâm really looking forward to seeing what your future travels will be.
Love that spontaneous ending oh how those college days are coming back have a great time
Lovely to see my home port
I knew this day would come, I am caught up, watched every video from the beginning... What wonderful content: learning, frustrations, love story, success. Thanks again for sharing.
Ive really enjoyed the sailing and touring videos. I tend to steer away from them as they all seem to cover the exact same thing. (tropical beaches, snorkeling, swimming, etc). So few channels that I've found enjoy the northern latitude and I am anxiously awaiting your sails north. This will be a lot of fun.
Great episode! "We're going to get wasted "
We also had some isickly issues when starting cruising. A very experienced sailor and nautical architect recommended reducing weight as much as possible.
We were able to reduce the loaded weight by over two tons by getting rid of excess books, clothes, tools spares and especially excess anchor chain ( only need boat length equivilant. Much improved motion and no more sticky. We also gained one knot of boat speed in light air conditions!
Next went the ridiculous washing machine, canned and Jared foods and beverages. The wash machine was replaced by a simple hand agitator in a bucket. Before each passage we made it standard ops to go through entire boat and keep reducing weight and lost one more ton.
Best advice I ever got in 10 years of live aboard cruising.
Thank you guys for another nice Sunday evening this time. Hope you enjoy your tour of the distillery. Mads, I think you married a California party girl. When you taste your whisky samples look for notes of chocolate, caramel and fruit hidden by a faint smokiness if the distillery used peat to toast their grains. Irish whisky is in that category of heavenly nectars. Have a great week ahead.
Love Ireland. Home of my ancestors.
đđŸAva gets it! Safe travelsđ
Hey, Mads, any concerns you had over keeping your channel interesting after transitioning to mostly travel-related info, should be vanquished! Great video, my friends.
Amazing! So happy for you both!!đ„°đ„°
I enjoyed the openness and humor in the way you both narrate âŠGreetings from Michigan..
Ava i have to say you are progressing nicely becoming a great crew. You will be an old salt as soon as a blink of the eye. I hope for your sake both of you are journaling. The Irish cream is great in coffee (1ounce to 2 ounces to dull any pain) and or I like it on the rocks with almond milk (an adult style chocolate milk substitute ). I was a bartender in fine dining for 15 years of my 20 years in the biz. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have if needed.
A very pleasant video to watch thanks đ and your narration is spot on .. will be watching more thank thanks đ Glyn đŹđ§
Love the interesting videos you two make. Thank you
OkâŠ. đ. Ava is in charge of next weeks episode đ„ đ
EXTRUSION!!!!!
Golden!
You guys keep making fantastic videos. Thanks!
Best of luck đ
ââ€đ
Really pleased to see you on an overnight sail. Great video.
Really nice video! GOD bless, JC
Good job!
That stuff is great with coffee!
A great video all the way through! Thank you!
Love you guys!!!
I've been watching the channel on two time lines. One is the 'current' and the other is catching up on the old videos. I haven't gotten to the solar panel installation yet; looking forward to that now! clever idea.
Good video
Thanks for sharing đ
Sail on.
nice update 2xđ
So grateful you had a pleasant overnight trip!
Another great video Ava and Mads .
Hi Mads & Ava.
I've been binge watching your videos from the beginning and I'm almost caught up.. One thing I was hoping to find was a video on lightning protection. From observing your attention to detail on the other topics I am sure that you would do an excellent job on that topic. I'm sure that a lot of other followers would love to see you tackle this subject.. I know that it must be very important to you because you have quite an investment (in electronics) to protect. Thanks in advance... Keep up the Awesome work. Looking forward to following you in the future.
Fair Winds & Following Seas...
Pure quality
She is a keeper! Love the outtakes
Delightful port visit
Looking forward to next week
You go girl
Love ya guys!
It's been awhile since I've watched one of your videos, you all have come a long way, great work! Looking forward to future videos.
Great you had a pleasant night crossing, a good introduction to night sailing for Ava.
"We're gonna get wasted!" LOL!
Seems to me whether youâre motoring or sailing you need to employ all your navigation skills equipment and boat handling protocols. Every open ocean sail builds experience and confidence for both of you.
Back in the day when I traveled with a DSLR, my favorite lens was a Nikon 24-120. There were times I wished for a wider lens but it was my go to lens for a lot of pictures.
fun video .thanks for sharing
Welcome to Ireland đźđȘ. Weâre an Irish sailing channel based in Malahide
Superb spiffy Sunday at last aaaah. Nice
Congratulations on a very successful overnight! And that dolphin footage was incredible!
Think we can see someone is going to have soooo much fun testing the whisky đ„
Welcome to Cork guys; I really hope you enjoy your time here. If you are up for an adventure you could move Athena over to East Ferry marina, and then take your dinghy up the river to within walking distance of Midleton Distillery (I presume that's where you are going đ).
Looking forward to next week. Eva is good for you, she has only the best ideas, follow her instructions to the letter. By which I mean to say: Shots! Shots! Shots!
Stay safe.
Love all the videos. Conclusion: Pretty Damn Spiffing !
