Mads saying: "I am not going for ultimate perfection"... Yeah, right!
Mads is not perfection is my Mona Lisa.
You should put window tint to help with filming. Tape isn’t as spiffy. LoL
Mads, I never write comments here, but I love everyone of your videos and there is no other sailing channel that I watch that is anything like yours. I never get bored watching your channel and I love your man glitter ✨and all of your unique English phrases. Have some DIY fun for me and please say hi to Ava.
“I’m not going for perfection in my paint job” ...what paint brand does Mads choose? Perfection Pro, of course :)
Oh glorious sanding and fairing!! How we have missed you…
"Oh Glorious Sanding" - my favorite t-shirt. Nice to see some sanding in this episode. 🙂
DIY including sanding and electrical work, now we are getting spoiled by Mads big time. Thanks for a great video as always!
Regarding Air Conditioning: Not sure what you are looking for, but would encourage you to look at AC unit designed by another CZcamsr Emily and Clarks Sailing Adventure. Clark, an engineer, designed a DC battery powered AC unit up to 5000 BTUs which is now being manufactured. Apparently is very efficient and can easily run all night off of one 100ah Lith battery. You can check out his design from a 1 yr ago video or more recent one where he installs unit on another sailboat. Unit costs less than 1/2 of another well known DC powered AC unit. I have no business interest in Clark's AC unit/the manufacturing co- just saw it on his YT channel.
I agree. Also, he advises a 6' VHF whip antenna; His wind generator seems just up you DIY alley,.
I remember seen that video about his 12 volt air conditioner it's definitely worth looking into.
Here yeah go, Clark's ac unit...

Agreed..
Great video Mads. Hope all is well with Ava and her sister.
What I like is that Mads is just enough of a perfectionist to inspire me to be better but not too much to deter me from trying.
The more fans in the galley, the better. 🙂 Good video! Looking forward to your wife's return though. Like the cruising style videos a little better than just DIY.
Good luck with the list and the HEAT WAVE....hope all is well and I continue to enjoy your videos....thanks!
Excellent close up video work of the door👍
Nice to see you on the water at SailGP - yeah you were spotted.
Little aimable fans everywhere are the shiznits. There is no place on our boat down below where one is more than an arms-length away from cageless Caframo fan. The cageless fans are much more efficient and quiet but even though they are "safe" to touch when spinning that can still be quite startling when it happens -especially when you put your face into the moving fan blade which I have unfortunately done more than once.
We have 3 fans in our V-berth, one in each corner of the triangle along with a reading light and USB socket to charge a phone or tablet.
We even have a fan in the head and one above the cooktop to blow the heat and cooking moisture towards the companionway hatch.
Excellent as usual 👍 like the fans
looks great mads. Cabin really coning together
Pretty Dang Spiffy!!!
The 'other fans' are the SEEKR Sirocco II available on Amazon & other places
Speaking from experience I would STRONGLY suggest that you do a very thorough cleanup of the sanding dust inside the boat before Ava returns. Otherwise, well let's just say it might not be a pleasant homecoming.
Hi great work MADS ,keep going .
I missed this kind of videos. Glad to have it back!!!
What can one say when “not going for perfection” is spoken. Love it.
Lots of good projects. Always fun to watch.
I for one welcome our genset overload.
Watching you join the wires reminded me of a trick that Dave showed me a dozen centuries ago. Offset the cuts on the wires on both sides by 10 centimeters before you join and solder so that even if your electrical tape and heat shrink and everything dissolves, the electrical bits still can't come into contact with each other. You'll have 10cm less on the + wire on one side and 10cm more on the other side.
Best idea of the week!
Thanks for sharing another awesome episode. Ive been following you for a while already, and enjoying and learning from your journey. Hey, I have a suggestion, if it makes sense to you. I have noticed that the cook top is right beside your electronics/nav station. Considering that there will be stem with grease coming out of the cook top and landing on your electronics, I would suggest for you to install a barrier between them. A glass would work but it is probably dangerous, maybe another cheap transparent material to block a little bit the grease coming from the cook top to the electronics.
Some nice texture shots, really shows up the grain and inside of the door "stuff" great video 2x 👍
Think you really enjoy the DIY stuff - it shows.
Man, what a great episode!
The head door now looks fabulous! The Oh Glorious Sanding really made a difference. 😎 I still miss Ava, but you’re kicking it, Mads. The boat will look great when she returns. 😎💕
Nice work.
"Somewhat extensive refit"
Just a new top, bottom and middle.
I really liked the look of the doors up against all the white, I'm sure you guy had your reasons for painting them tho lol
I was thinking the same thing. Beautiful two colours of wood, have now become plain white. 😔 Nice paint job, but still a loss of colour.
Mads: "I'm not going for ultimate perfection." Mads then delivers ultimate perfection, as if any of us had any doubt.
I can't help it, I have to smirk every time I hear you say " a somewhat extensive refit".
I recall you were worried about the transition from diy videos to cruising. You didn't need to worry, your recent videos have been great. But if I'm honest (and I am), you look truly happy working through your post-its on the bulkhead.
Hey guys, hi from Canada 🇨🇦. We love the show, love the dang spiffy T-shirts. We'd love to see a new picture of Ava in the intro. and that your adventures are continuing into 2022. Keep up good work and your informative videos when you go to a small town are super interesting. 👌
Great job
Great work as usual Mads. Didn't you call Ava to ask her where she put your respirator?? Lol
I hope you survived the heat!!
See you👍🏽
Great DIY, just wondering on the washboards if you were planning on a piece of trim on the bottom of the top board to overlap the top of the lower board so that any water hitting them runs off rather than through the gap and down below.
Looking forward to the trim around the vertical bar on the nav station :)
U are the man!!!
Dometic also make Marine airconditioners so these should also be checked out. Their products for RV’s (although totally irrelevant in this context) are well thought of and seem reliable. Backup is also important and where it can be obtained from in different parts of the World.
Lovely tech on boat.troubleshooting after a storm or knockdown be such a nightmare
We got tired of having to leave the head door open to prevent mold, so I installed a louvered vent at the top and bottom. Later I added a small Dorade box with a quiet fan in it, helped with the 'Bog Fumes' as well as dampness after a shower... 💩🙊 You might want to glue a thin piece of white poly below the washboard latch to keep the padlock from wearing your nice paint job away... If things get too muggy down below, you can pick up a small (5,000 BTU) Home AC unit and set it in the companionway, a bit of poly sheeting will seal the gaps. If access is an issue, you can place the unit atop the open hatch and use some poly to 'box' it in. I don't know your prices, but it would be under $200 here, and I'm sure it would be easily re-sold...
I don’t think he showed us the install…but he did put a fan in the shower part of the head. If you look back on episodes that show the technical compartment real well. You can see the ductwork, the duct exits through a vent into the back of the cockpit.
Nice video 👍
Oh glorious sanding...It must be nice to get some of these DIY projects done while Eva is away. I hope those fans help keep you cool.
Always amazing Mads!!
Well, sailing will never be a thing on this channel 😁
I have missed you videos.. welcome back!!!
Enjoyed the episode.
oh glorious sanding
there is an easier way to get rid of the rough surface after painting. Basically when wood gets wet the fibres start to start to swell and the surface get rough...simply water the piece of wood with a wet cloth before painting. Let dry and sand. Repeat the process as often as necessary and after the last time sanding, you can paint the first time. have fun testing.
best regards
Athena is a nice boat... having the time to correct the things that went wrong from your breaking in year will probably serve you guys well
Doors and washboards came up well. We like a little bit of perfection... ! Who dreams up these daft error messages that just confuse? At least you had good support from Victron and the genset people.
Mads I have the same victron system only not the quattro, and I use that current limiter dial a lot. Mine only goes down to 9 amp though and then from there to zero maybe the system needs to be updated. It's really good when I'm in a place where I'm charged for power. If it's a sunny day I just let my solar do most of the work and I do that by turning that limiter down. I wish I had to quattro maybe next year
Wow looks great Madds you really did a great job . Just keeping busy til everything is done... Looking great, really does... ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Thanks!
Another great video Mads .
Miss Ava .
I haven't tried this yet, but I was told that where you have rough grain, paint it with water first to make the grain stand up, then sand that before painting.
That’s what primer is for. Cut first coat as much as allowed by manufacturer. The more you can cut it the easier it’ll be to sand.
( I owned a cabinet shop, we never got anything wet)
Great job Mads, everything looks brilliant and pretty dang spiffy...my wife and I really love your projects. We're hoping to soon upgrade our 1978 26' Pierson. 👍👍💛⛵
Impressive problem solving skills.
Stay healthy.
Consider that the fan placement at the nav station would blow hot air from the cooktop onto you. Another great video.
Can you please do a video on your sailing plans to test the boat and your skills before your crossing?
He has mentioned it a few times. Along with crossing the channel a few times. The plan is for them to go to France and work down the coast through Spain and eventually the canaries, before crossing the Atlantic.
Spotted you live on camera pre-start of SailGP today 🎥
Mads you make the rest of us, well actually speaking for myself only, look bad in front of our significant others when I say, "well that's good enough" on projects and get the stink eye and hear "well that is not how Sail Life did it...." thanks buddy..lol...John
the ease with which you work with your electrical system is staggering to me. i wish i could do the same but my limited talents sadly dont include a copy of windows, a usb cable, an energy thingy, and the brains to manipulate all of that.
😎
Hey Mads, did I just see you on a yacht at the Sail GP at Plymouth?
Missing your wife... Productivity goes up!) Cheers guys!)
In Thailand I’ve seen people use PC cooling ventilators and they work really well and are very quiet.
Fyi. I use hella turbo fans for 15 years. They last 1 year on high if you run 24 x7 like i do. I have 8 on my 37 footer in tropics. Caframo fans suck. I only got 6 months out of those the similar version.. But the cheapest caframo with no guard moves the most air by far. So i use those now too. I like the air flow but last just 4 months.
Love your electronics savvy. I do not know my amps from a hole in the ground.
The perfect end to a day of DYI boats! I don’t know if I asked you this before but is Ava a school teacher here in Michigan? I’m a retired public school teacher.
@3:30 I'm betting that you will find it somewhere in the "garage" / aft cabin...
It would be really nice if you manage to sort out that area also. It is a difficult and time consuming task but I'm sure (considering your organization skills) that the end result would blow our minds...
Are you a new uncle yet? Have you thought about a fan in the galley? Thanks for the episode. Stay cool
I just wonder? why are your windows covered inside? Always interesting videos, thank you!
Disappointed not to see the wiring and connection to the system part of the fan job. Nice to see the finished product but how did you get there??
I like how you get round these issues so easy. What line of work was you in before your sailing dream.
I saw you in the sail gp live stream video on somebody else's boat
Whenever a wire is to short. Just order a tube of stretcholin. Works every single time. 😬
2:04 they cut it against the grain, prolly QC was sleeping and didn't see it. I usually put a wet sponge over those kinds of areas and sand them smooth, repeating the process a couple of times. Raises the fibers and makes sure you get everything right.
Pretty careful work for someone "not going for ultimate perfection"! When did you have that change of heart?
I brought a 67’ Mason up from Acapulco. It had an electric galley.
So we had no refrigeration and cooked on the bbq. Not a fan.
Am a bit suprised you havent invested in some two speed with a big clip USB fans also Mads for some mobile spot wafting 🙂
Just a comment on not using respirator. I’m sure you know well. But for viewers who are new here. Respirators or solvent protection masks are needed not for smell but to protect from solvents in products like paint. Solvents damage the nervous system and the end result from over exposure is like a long term alcoholic. So a one off not using is probably ok. But make it a once off.
If there is one spot on your boat that needs sanding and fairing, it is the inside of the door to the reading room. I doubt there is a surface inside that boat you will spend more time staring at. If it ain't Pretty Damn Spiffy you will be very disappointed.
Mess... I saw that head door handle from when you installed it a number of episodes ago and asked about the mfg and model number. I have been looking for a flush mount latch with lever handles and have come up dry despite my exhaustive searching. Hopefully you can point me in the right direction. Thanks for the content... Alex from Seattle, WA
Where did you take-off 12v power for fans? Do you a breaker on your main DC panel or Czone switch assigned? Did run wires for each fan back to Czone closet or “steal” power inline from lighting circuit?
13:06 I've heard they're Hella expensive and don't last long
SomMads likes sanding but doesn’t like being sanded by his doors. Yet again no task or progress on the nav station eyesore lol.
Cove stripe RED with Sail Life loco on the side please.
Okay I'm trying to remember here but didn't you use some kind of radiator type design for heating? Could you use that and chill the fluid that's inside the system for air conditioning?
Most generators can either run at 3000RPM (to generate 50HZ) or 3600RPM (for 60HZ) as you get higher power from the 3600 this is often what's quoted even in Europe where generators are run at 3000RPM. So as most electronics can run at 60HZ you can usually get a power boost from your generator by increasing the engine speed. I'm not sure if the inverter/charger can deal with the different inputs but it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't convert everything to DC for manipulation anyway.
Madz do you have an equipment list related to you energy management system. Is it all Victron?
Mads.....the top and bottom of that chrome pole by your nav station. Just sayin'......
✌🏾🙏❤😇
The other fans are scirocco II much more expensive but much better
