What? Indonesia? Our President has denied that we have formally applied to join BRICS, as we are primarily interested in joining the OECD at the moment. Our finance and foreign ministries even stated that joining them would bring more burden than it's worth.

The members of BRICS have nothing in common other than the fact they are all large economies that are not part of G7, so they simply created their own economic club. Other than that, they have nothing in common.
Some have argued (mistakenly) that the existence of BRICS is somehow analogous to the existance of the Non-Aligned Movement (led by India) during the Cold War. But being non-aligned back then just meant resisting efforts to get sucked into the orbit of either Moscow or Washington, which was difficult for many developing countries that were becoming independent during the 1960s and 1970s. For instance, the former Portuguese colonies in Africa achieved independence in 1975 thanks in part to Soviet support. And so those countries became one-party states influenced by Moscow until the end of the Cold War when they transitioned toward democracy and liberalization.
Actually, the BRICS countires do have one thing in common: All their currencies start with "R". Real, Ruble, Rupee, Renminbi, Rand.

It is a completely dysfunctional group of countries with very little in common. And who is the billionaire or investor that wants to put its money in a authoritarian country that does not abide by the rule-of-law? Even billionaires want to put their money in a safe place where the law protects their property. That place is in the west thanks to their solid institutions.
Whilst I think this BRICS enlargement is all a power play by China and is a loose arrangement of countries that either have an axe to grind with the US or are looking to play both sides off against each other to get a better deal from Washington, I don't see many billionaires or investors not looking at putting money into countries with questionable regimes if the ROI is better for them because in the end all they care about is money, this and a lot of the raw materials and minerals that are needed and will be increasingly needed now or in the near future more and more are only found in such countries. I also see this as a way for China to destabilise the world by bypassing sanctions on regimes like Russia and Iran, to keep the war going in Ukraine through the sale of Russian oil to these countries without the need to go through the US, but China instead.
Are you serious? I am not a very rich person, but I have invested some amount of my capital in funds in the US and some European countries. At the moment my assets are frozen. Now there are talks about transferring them to Ukraine, which means they are stolen.

Global Governance is a silly thing. What we really have is global control of bad countries by regulating access to the economies of good countries. At some point the bad countries change enough to be part of the good country club and their own markets are now the prize for the bad countries. Some good countries devolve into bad countries too. Somewhere along the road we started thinking that a communist and a capitalist deserve equal treatment. That is where globalism failed.
I appreciate the concluding remark about the global need for a fair and inclusive system. However, power dominates everything, and people will only listen to you if you have something valuable to offer. As the saying goes, money talks bullshit walks.
Of the many issues ongoing, BRICS is of little concern. China and India are at each other throat. Saudi Arabia and Iran have longstanding issues. South Africa is a basket case, Brazil has serious issues and is isolated from the others. Russia is bleeding out in Ukraine in a hopeless stalemate. And finaly China is nearing demographic collapse. But other than these isssues, all is fine in BRICS.

After EU decided to stop energy trade with Russia, bought up the entire global LNG stocks and by default increased gas and oil prices globally.

Since 2004, India is a stratetic parnter of India:
-6,000 EU companies operating in India have created 1.7 million direct jobs and an additional 5 million indirect jobs.
-EU foreign direct investment (FDI) in India reached âŹ87 billion in 2020.
-The EU was India's third-largest trading partner in 2021.
-The European Investment Bank (EIB) has invested over âŹ3 billion in infrastructure, energy, and climate projects in India.
-Furthermore, EU-India Joint Declarations have been adopted to bolster efforts on connectivity, water, and resource efficiency, employing a circular economy approach. In 2023, the EU and India also launched a Trade and Technology Council focusing on digital transformation and green technologies.
They get Business, trade AND development.
And what do Indian politicians do?? They SPIT on Europe and they HELP our ADVERSARIES to line their own pockets.
Thats why I hope EU bilateral programs stop. It makes Europeans poorer, it drains wealth from EU to India. And the return is abyssmally low.

The entirety of BRICS consists of actors who all either hate each other or don't have any real connection beyond some mutual trade interests. To summarise:
-China and Russia cooperate purely out of geo-strategic necessity, but would tear/nuke each other to pieces if the US wasn't there.
-India and China's relationship is even more cancerous, and they have their troops engage in horrific melee border skirmishes every couple of months (with China usually being the one who starts those fights, and India finishing them).
-Brazil is a barely cohesive mess that has always had astronomical potential, but will never reach it due to insurmountable political, geographical and social issues.
-South Africa is quickly on its way to becoming Haiti 2.0: Electric Boogaloo, being run by slime who are so stupidly corrupt they actively brag about it on live television.
-SA, Brazil and India are definitely more pro-Western in terms of the level of freedom, legal systems and the structure of the societies themselves, putting them almost completely at odds with Russia and China's brutal authoritarianism and censorship
-Russia shits the bed whenever the oil price goes a bit wonky, and has virtually zero soft political power, relying on its shambolic military to maintain relevancy. The current kerfuffle in Ukraine is not helping matters.
-China is dealing with a whole host of awful economic and social issues at home, which is leading them to act very petulantly on the global political stage, but also at home.
-All the other countries who want to join or have joined are either weakly third-world banana republic entities or nations who also absolutely hate each others' guts.
Your proposal is the long expected materialization of the initiative for democracies that so far has failed to materialize into practical means for a democratic rules based order to provide better living standards.
Argentina initially joined to watch and veto Brazil, Ethiopia joined to watch/veto Egypt, KSA & UAE to watch/veto Iran.

Europeans are uniquely skilled and experienced with regional and global politics and organization and have never been afraid to enforce and sustain it. China has almost no experience in this area. Most other people within the human race have almost no experience in this area maybe aside the mid-east but it's not on the level of the Europeans and Americans. Usually a pact or an organization is entered with a clear purpose and a structure in mind and most importantly greased wheels and cooperation already established among the parties involved with the benefits and potential clearly defined as well as the risks. These other power centers have a long way to go, and they're in fact using many European style methods to achieve this, but they clearly don't have the confidence nor the ability to actually get this thing off the ground in a way that seriously threatens what the west has established.. because what the west has established is far far more vast than many of us even really know or understand.

BRICS is a two-phase con - first, pull everyone in on a promise of building a more equitable world order (that serves each member's national interests, coincidentally) - and then next, the trap slams shut with a centralized currency that lends China all the power in the group, permanently. It seems like the second half of this plan may never quite work - the members all know about it, and don't want to let it go that far. Israel isnât part of the western powers nor alliances, similar reason why the DPRK isnât a PR nightmare for BRICS because one member is supporting it, Iran however, is very much involved and already a pariah unlike Israel. It certainly hurts the western cause but is not nearly as big of a political burden especially since a large number of western countries have been going against Israel and Israeli allies have been advising them to calm down (which is ignored but still itâs tried).

BRICS was a catchy slogan nothing more. It doesn't have a unified currency among themselves. They hare not ideologically aligned. Countries who want to join are more than likely desperate.
Is there any indication that B, I, C, or S are actually ready to back China? I think each of those countries plus each of the expansion countries will pursue their own interests.
That said, I think the developing economies can, will, and should push for reforms. This will lead to an easing of U.S./Western hegemony but not its fall.

Thank you for this video, I found two take aways especially interesting:
1) BRICS shows a glimpse of how China would rule the world, if it replaced the US - ie: same, but different, but still the same. The top nation that would work to break the cycle of top nations has not been found here either.
2) The US still has a window in which it could achieve such a mighty transformation of the global system, the global desire is there, the power is still there...
Maybe instead of bowing out of globalisation quietly, there is some hope that a future leader could inspire the world by bowing the US out pre-emptively to the benefit of a genuinely empowered UN or other potential international rule setter, that could take steps to ending the international anarchy....

Yes and no. It would be a band-aid. Using an outside currency like the USD will curb inflation, naturally, but only to a certain point. But long-term, you need to make institutional change that allows you to use your own currency that will prevent the previous errors and policy decisions that got you to that point in the first place, which is the hard bit. Dollarizing is quick, thus an immediate band-aid to stop the bleeding, but not curing the illness. You can't rely on "Dollarizing" your economy long-term, unless youre a small country that gets alot of Dollars from natural trade inflows (think of small tourist countries like Costa Rica or Panama because of the Panama Canal inflows, or Caribbean Island nations).
But country like Argentina cannot dollarize as a long-term plan, as that will fail. There just wont be enough USD inflow for a country of that size.

The British Sterling was replaced by the USD and off the Gold Backed . The BRICS currency can go back to Gold backed plus a digital currency for trade like a few Countries in the Caribbean are already doing with China digital currency exchange.
The real problem with BRICs is that the most common currency traded between themselves and others is USD Russian Rupee cant be used outside of the group Chinese Yuan value is set by the Chinese Government Indian Rupee is ranked 15th and is not very liquid as India does not import many finished goods So the most likely common currency is the USD
Brics is samsung, where apple is the US. It is the main competitor to the worlds hegemon, but being the main competitor doesn't say much in itself.
One must have to wonder if any of this was possible, why hasn't the US-led system that we call "western countries" (I hate that term... Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan etc aren't western) haven't created a common currency like BRICS supports advocate for. I mean the term BRIC itself was coined by an American economist at Goldman Sachs (not some random British lord), so why haven't we done it? That's a rhetorical question of course; it's because it's a very very dumb idea. Even blocs like the European Union, which has it's own enforceable constitution, legislature, and decades of integration *STILL* grapples with the concept of essentially exporting their monetary policy to a foreign capital.

Ironically it was EU with Euro who came close to that result, with US dollar having 80% of global reserve currency share, and after Euro gained its power the US dollar got down to 60% and Euro 20%. So Euro became the seconds largest reserve currency, having the same share as all other currencies combined(if US$ is excluded)

The U. S. needs to accept applications for the Dollar or the Digital Dollar.
If they could just manage to harmonize their monetary policy and achieve a currency union, it would seriously strengthen their economies and would make the US dollar less mandatory for reserve currency status. But there's no way a bunch of autocrats and dictators would ever allow any central bank outside of their control to decide how much money the can have.
That would require India to put trust into China with their currency and power

The geoplilitical issues between countries talked about is nothing as game changing as it is believed to be for even in the global west cracks md devides of varying degrees will gradually arise when more and more crisis befalls it and dismay and range if opinions probable to be formed increase.
As for opposing US currency, its too deep ingrained to oppose it in a significant way and the opposition has just started, its too early to judge if something will come of it for the collective global south or not.

Saying the global south wants to break away from a world of might makes right just seems blatantly wrong to me. Most of these countries are governed by this same idea intenally afterall. Cooperation with one side or the other globally is simply a means to consolidate power or expand influence in their neighborhood without accountability. (Ethiopia for example wants to expand into the horn and reach the sea as it brutally represses local upsrisings) Economically there is much to gain for developing economies in the forum on paper but few seem poised to take advantage of this. Because this access to support comes with a price. With all this access to oil, technology, raw resources and manpower why have so few states within the forum actually seen the benefits to a large degree? Because these resources are to the benefit of india, china and Russia primarily. And given the chance most of these countries would rather decentralize the global order rather than replace it. South Africa, Ethiopia, India, China, Russia and Brazil off the top of my head seem well positioned to dominate their local regions if left to their devices. A multi polor world for some of these countries is one where they wish to carve their own spheres of influence partly by hedging powers against eachother.

The only way BRICS would work is if they expanded it to include the US.
The US-EU coalition with the participation of the chief Commonwealth countries excluding India is still too strong and will likely be almost impossible to challenge unless they themselves botch their diplomatic and economic edge with supranational organizations like MERCOSUR, ASEAN and the African Union.
Also, the Middle East seems to be still more Western-leaning and only wanted the BRICS as an alternative just in case the "collective West" and its institutions will fail in such a level akin to the USSR.
China's eventually failure (sorry it is already showing its cracks) will spell the end of BRICS at some point. Russia, though for a time, will be an economic "client state" of the PRC thanks to its senseless war that ultimately strengthened NATO.
There's the G20 for that. But the West needs to stop playing kindergarten at G20 events with their small-minded walkouts and attitude of "I'm not talking to you!"
These countries has nothing in common. Their political and economical situation is completely different and heading to different directions. Different cultures, different traditions. They couldn't be much further away from one another.
I will be honest, BRICS only seems to be held togetger by their dislike for USA and EU. If they disappeared BRICS is more likely to fall apart than be united. Moreover what exactly is it trying to do right now? Become something like EU or ASEAN or does it have other goals?
