    I have never actually considered making characters of this manner in my games. Idk if my players would be specifically interested in the potential romantic dynamics, but the basic formula you have presented is definitely one that could produce NPCs players could find themselves attached to at some capacity even minus the romantic potential. It's not a hard concept to use with other sorts of relationships like a little sister-esque character, close friend, or much appreciated ally. Very fun ideas to play around with.

    Also, some tip for using this method:
    1) Don’t change the NPC’s crux aspects after player has shown attachment. You don’t know what appealed to them, they probably don’t know what they wanted either. Add onto it instead (backstory time) and take care to not contradict.
    2) Do not let the NPC stick with the party through. This is a GMPC pitfall (unless your playing duets).
    3) Build a roster (harem) for the party. Rotate the NPCs to keep them just a bit out of reach and to keep interactions fresh. Such that there is always something to catch up (what did xxx do in the background of our adventure?).
    4) Ditch the party, but always give the party some reason to meet up again. If the party liked the NPC well enough, they’ll bite.
    5) If flaws were not introduced on initial contact, introduce flaws after a proper attachment have been made. Less likely to bomb and more likely for the party to accept it as a part of them.
    6) Venerability + flaw = I can help them.
    7) Show that the NPC have their own life outside of interacting with the party. This will round the image out a bit.
    8) Gap-moe is a sure-kill.

    Call me old, but I feel the mlp brony phenomenon was a foreshock to the waifu phenomenon (and also had no real competition in the west).
    Though I think the. Visual appeal was a bit less (the animation was visually pleasing, and had cute faces to make up for not being humans) and there was a bigger focus on that personality and connection to the viewer, and had enough of a scattershot that if you didn't like the main cast there was at least one pony you'd like.
    At least, that's my theory on the subject

    Legit question: Do your friends you mentioned working in gacha games ever feel a bit bad? You can't help but notice the sheer level of addictive practices built into them that take advantage of problem gambler behaviour.
    Separate matter: This video was rad. I can't believe the amount of theory you drew from this, it's great sound advice.

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  Před 11 měsíci +14

      To be honest, I never asked them because gacha is a very old and common sales practice in Japan, with gachapon capsule toys sold to kids since the late 60s. In fact, the term gacha comes from gachapon vending machines that sell randomised toys to kids. So they've been exposed to the lucky draw system ever since they're very young and most people won't get addicted to this system since they'd be inoculated to it through their life experience.
      I think it may turn into a problem for overseas mobile gamers that are not familiar with Japanese culture and the lucky draw system. Then again, trading card games in both sides of the shores use the same system. So I don't think mobile gacha is uniquely worse compared to the other hobbies.

    That final piece of advice of giving multiple npcs/waifus to your players is great. We can't gauge if players will gravitate to a npc, so provide multiple options. Who knows the players might just accidentally gravitate to someone we didn't even expect! That's always fun (and/or confusing).

      @daniellin1726 Před 11 měsíci

      It’s the same as the trick of throwing out plot leads/hooks. This is very healthy for the GM too, since this method encourages low prep, having less investments on “presenting” a NPC, and more opportunity to cater and co-develope to the player’s preferences once they have indicated so.

    One of the most honest coverages on characters. Hollywood could learn a few things about character development here as most of the movies I see lately have characters I just don't care about as they are either too perfect or too evil to give a care about.

    Why does this feel… _cursed_ for me?
    Maybe it’s a relative bit of discomfort I have with the topic, but the idea of manufacturing a personality specifically for romantic appeal seems _wrong_ to me.

      @@DontStopThinking oh I know of them. I’ve just never had an interest in the kind of romantics involved there. My idea of the concept is probably pretty misguided, with no experience in it to my name, but I suppose I understand the desire for romance to come easier.
      I mean… I play games that allow me to be a super soldier, so… why not make books, shows and games that allow people to be in romantic relationships with people?

    Now I'm starting to understand Why Chixia from Wuthering Waves changed so much from Beta. As a character her action and reactions made sense.
    But by Gacha Waifu rules. She's Terrible. Connection to the player was Broken over something they had no control over. Her Personality goes through a Massive change where she Distrust you heavily and again over something you the player couldn't control.
    Damn.
