  • Rescue efforts are underway after a section of a major bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore. A Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, had collided into a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Two people have been rescued so far, with one in serious condition. The fire department has called it a "mass casualty event", with search operations looking for seven individuals. Officials earlier said there could be as many as 20 people in the water. Simon Marks reports from Washington DC.

    With this kind of deadweight, once the steering went the wrong direction, it will take a long time to come to a full stop even with the brake fully applied. This is why in Singapore, they are being dragged into the port by boat. Cannot believe they have a suspended bridge next to the port. Once any part of the cable snap, the whole bridge fall like a domino. Which mean, there is no room at all for human error.

    • @AirGaboon
      @AirGaboon Před měsícem +12

      This is not a Suspension bridge, but rather a Cantilever type of bridge; no cables in the design. That bridge has been there for decades and this is the first time an incident like this has happened on the US East Coast in awhile. I've driven over that bridge plenty of times with ships passing underneath with no problems at all.
      If you watch the extended video carefully, a few minutes before you can see the entire ship go dark indicating a power failure. A ship can't steer much, if at all during a power failure.

      Apparently it was an Indian crew on the ship. Having said that, the ship lost power (we will find out soon why that happened; fire in the engine bay apparently) and the captain had laid the anchor and informed the authorities of an imminent collision. As such, the cops had actually blocked off the bridge before the collision and prevented many more deaths, though unfortunately some construction workers lost their lives.
      Nice try, though, by attempting to be racist - without any evidence - and pinning the blame on the crew, when they actually followed all procedures and communicated ahead of time. Even if the crew wasn't Indian, did you really expect them to be able to completely stop such a large vessel amid power outage, in the same circumstances?
