      Thank you. We need all the thoughts, prayers, and support we can get right now. The communities of Dundalk, Sparrows Point, and Edgemere are devastated. I took the bridge twice a day for 14 years and I crossed it not even 10 hours before it collapsed. I have never spoken with people on social media before but I can honestly say everyone's support has really helped me get through this.

      The ship was cleared by the port officials to leave the port, so it was kept up to international standards.

      There’s really nothing that can be done, there is no accountability to hold. The ship was having malfunctions, and it wasn’t the fault of any of the crew. Maybe we can say the company that owned the ship should’ve been doing more maintenance? But there’s no way they would’ve known it would crash into a bridge let alone destroy the bridge immediately.
      As for the bridge, it would’ve been great if it was more stable, but it was also built in the 50s or 60s and obviously back then they wouldn’t have prepared the bridge for an impact with something that size. So overall, not much accountability to hold here.

    When a new bridge is constructed surround each pier between which ships pass with what is tantamount to an oval-shaped island of rock and soil about 200 feet long in the direction of travel and 100 feet wide. A coffer dam on the perimeter makes placement easy. A few piles driven into the seabed extending into each mass provides even greater stability. Material for each island dredged from the seabed benefits the channel. Relative to the cost of the bridge this is an inexpensive and effective solution that will prevent piers from being dislodged when bumped by the largest of container ships.

If it was so easy to knock down, they should have been thinking ahead, not just reacting to a tragedy. It seems too many of those are happening. We employ and pay large salaries too people and a functioning government should be on top of things like this. We have too many people in these positions that just collect their charity and are not doing their job. Back just a few years ago, people would be held accountable for the negligence at some point. Salvaging the container ship will be a multi-step process. Besides off-loading the containers and removing the ones with hazardous materials, the dirty fuel will have to be pumped out of the tanks, then the hull might have to be repaired if a bridge beam ruptured it. If the ship is seaworthy-enough, it will have to be towed to a shipyard where it can be repaired - but then you really can't risk having it sink.

    Can’t afford to lose a bridge and lives with every cargo ship that veers off course.
    Tug escort may need to be used if ships can’t stay on course.
    Eight miles per hour with that tonnage is tremendous impact value to destroy any thing involved.

      Tug boats or a basic barrier systems on the bridges legs. Bridge was built around the same time as the sunset bridge collapse due to a ship strike that killed like 36 people and this bridge for 40 years never got retrofitted with a barrier system. It’s 50’ deep water, it’s would have taken 6 months and less than $100 million to drive sheet piles and build out a barrier. Instead we’re looking at +$6 billions for a bridge.

    • @venom4597
      @venom4597 Před měsícem

      Every port has different rules for tugboat escorts. For extended tugboat escorts it costs shipping company money. Ports are in competition for business so they may cut tugboat escorts short to attract more ships. It definitely needs to looked into I think. Also last I looked the cost to build new bridge there was 600 million not 6 billion. Unless it has changed.
