3:09 So that little bit with Gerro saying "The original Androids that were always apart of this story, Yes From the Very Beginning" is actually a deep cut to the executive meddling throughout the Android saga. The creator Toriyama kept designing the villains starting with android 19 and Gerro but his editor at the time wasn't a fan so he made 17 18 and 16 but still wasn't satisfied and then Cell, but then his new editor wasn't the biggest fan of his other forms until Finally arriving at Perfection. It's pretty interesting, TFS went over this with their DBCember top 24 DB Villains list
I mean to be fair, there was an Android 8 in the red ribbon army back in the early days of og dragonball so technically they were part of there pretty much since the beginning. We met android 8 before piccolo or vegeta or tenshinhan or kami

That happened with the kai version not with the original Z. In kai the music was changed both in the dub and sub version but originally the dub would have had the same music as the sub but because the sub music was plagiarized the music had to be changed in the dub too.
Wasnt Kazuhiko Torishima, who wasnt Toriyama's editor at the time, responsible for those comments?

At the time, depending on location, it wasn't voluntary lol; UK aired Dragonball long after it finished airing DBZ - we didn't "skip" it; i'm pretty sure DB GT happened before DB aired in the UK as well

You’ll see them mention starting with Z because they heard DB wasn’t important to knowing what’s going on. 10:30 - For the context, Cell is refering to Event called "DBcember". Starting from 2014, and ending on 2021, on every December, TFS was makeing Dragon Ball themed Top 10 videos (but 24 instead of 10), and one of those videos was covering Top 24 DB Villians.

So the scenes where they are discussing music are because it’s been a topic of discussion in the fan base as to what version of the show has the best music. The part where they talk about the music being stolen from better artists was because the composer of I want to say the Kai run of the show was outed for plagiarizing popular music for his soundtrack

Cell doing Linkin Park as he died is a shot at how many Linkin Park DBZ Anime Music Videos there were in the 2000s lol.
Gohan does peak Story wise in the Cell Saga. He drops back down to side character story wise in the Buu Sagas, and even in Super his character keeps up the same kind of feeling. There is the new movie that focused on him and Piccolo which is getting adapted in the Manga and thus likely Anime as well that might be a precurser to add on to him later, but I doubt it.
I really hope he won't lose all his development this time.
When the anime comes back and if they adapt the Super Hero movie in the anime it's going to be interesting to see how it looks in full 2D.

Unfortunately TeamFourStar has said they're done with the series so they'll never do the Buu saga so you should watch "Majin Buu: The Ultimate Menace" by CJ DaChamp. He's hilarious n sums up the entire saga pretty well n does his own voice overs to make his point

@@matthewcarpenter6202 eh… it’s a good video and does a lot but it kinda relies on you knowing the buu saga already and really focused on what buu himself does and not really the story. So I wouldn’t recommend it for the purposes of understanding the buu saga
Regarding Gohan peaking... Yeah, the plan after this was to move the storyline forward some years and have Gohan take the reigns as main character. He'd get a new supporting cast and setting and all the old supporting characters would move on with their lives (Krillin, for example, becomes a police officer, regrows his hair, and has a daughter). This lasted... not long at all before Toriyama apparently got cold feet and threw all the new stuff in the trashcan to bring Goku back. I don't think Gohan's character every really recovered.
The Superhero movie did him right, though.
If you think about it Gohan was the main character of Z up until Goku came back in the Buu saga. The whole story of Z revolves around his life up until that point. The Super Hero movie redeemed (in the sense that he doesn't feel like a side character anymore) Gohan so much. He is finally the character who he always should have been but now it's up to the writer to keep up his development.

So there were a few times in this where they discussed the music in Dragonball. Unfortunately one of the music composers of Dragonball, who did music for the original anime, the games, and even half of the Dragonball Kai music, Kenji Yamamoto was found to be plagerizing from more popular artists. Not even like obscure bands either, Black Sabbath, Statovarius, AC/DC, Journey and many many many more
Got to be honest. Cell whistling All Star? Significantly more unnerving than Cell singing Mr. Sandman.
The joke about A17 and A18 "definitely always being apart of the story from the start" comes from the editor of Toriyama (DB creator) peer reviewing the designs for Dr. Gero and A19 and disliking them, prompting him to create A17 and A18. He then thought the two of them looked too "childish" or something along those lines and so Toriyama created Cell, rinse repeat from there until we got Perfect Cell.
It's been fun being on this watching journey with you two for DBZA; may have to go watch the ones prior to when I started watching, I think as you were in mid-Season 2, haha. Also good that you're going on into DBZKai, since the dub for the Buu arc there will be more accurate and fine-tuned than the DBZ dub, especially with the actors now really settled into their roles. Some mention the Faulconer score not being there as an issue, given that Kai was dubbed after Funimation stopped their tradition of replacement music and kept the original scores in their dubs, but people who really want that can also look up fanedits that combine Kai:Buu with Faulconer (as someone who grew up on the Z dub, as Piccolo says in Kai 3 here, "it doesn't make it good, it just makes it nostalgic;" some of the tracks themselves are good, but it's the editing on them there that weakens it overall for me).
Curious to see how you like Kai's music, though, since you'll be going into it without the OST confusion in Kai 1.0 (where the score was actually pretty good [you've heard some of it in DBZA], but a plagiarism scandal made Toei haphazardly replace it all with a limited selection of Shunsuke Kikuchi's music from Z, while Kai:Buu uses a new composer that goes on to score for Super; there are fanedits that return the original score, properly place Kikuchi's music, and even mix some of them with Faulconer or others--it's a bit of a rabbit hole, haha [if you decide to watch Kai pre-Buu, I'd recommend looking up "Dragon Ball Kai Recut;" keeps that original score plus removes 16 episodes' worth of filler Kai still kept to make Saiyan-Cell 82 episodes instead of 98). Also looking forward to your Hellsing Ultimate Abridged reactions!

Gohan did peak in the Cell saga but recently we got a movie focused on him (Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero) and it looks like we finally got the version of Gohan we wanted all these years. Now it's up to the writers to not mess up like they did until now and make Gohan keep the development he got during the movie.
It's always so bittersweet when these great reaction channels reach the end of dbza. But you guys got a sub out of me, great channel.

Haha! Wait sorry say that again. I’m sure I can keep a straight face this time.
So Gohan really did peak here, they mostly had him take a back seat to Goku in the Buu Saga.
Mr. Satan actually had quite a bit to contribute to the Buu Saga and continued to take the credit for them but they didn’t really care about it. Also Mr Satan’s daughter Videl (Fan favorite) falls in love with Gohan.
Well, Gohan does come back in Super and Super: Super Heroes and goes up in power.
But yeah, he peaked.
The ending does sting a bit. Gohan was meant to replace Goku, the series was supposed to come to an end, and Goku was supposed to stay dead. And then the series ended up continuing, goku came back and still kind of ended up the main character and Gohan was left to the side underutilized (like most of the other characters that had appeared in Dragonball like Yamcha and Tien).
If you think about it Gohan was the main character of Z up until Goku came back in the Buu saga. The whole story of Z revolves around his life up until that point. Goku was just the hero who saved the day during early Z because Gohan was not strong or mature enough to completely take over but during the Cell games Goku gave his position up to Gohan because he realised that Gohan was ready for it. At the beginning of the Buu saga Toriyama tried to write Goku off from the story because Gohan didn't have anything else to learn from him but people didn't like it so he had to bring Goku back which resulted in Gohan downgrading to a side character.

They HAVE done more stuff with Perfect Cell, called Cell In A Hell (which is kind of a giveaway, but doesn't get into a tenth of what's so funny about it all). Thoroughly recommend, even if there aren't all that many of them yet.

I'd actually pay money to hear a full version of Takahata101 singing Limp Bizkit's cover of "My Way" as Cell. His voice sounded oddly...perfect.
Y'all should watch the Funimation dub of episode 191 "Save the World", it's the episode where Gohan kills Cell. For a lot of older dbz fans who watched the original Funimation dub, this episode and in particular the death of cell are both some of the most iconic moments in all of dragonball.
I think you guys would enjoy the Krillin Plays series. Maybe not to do reactions to, but just to watch for fun off camera
For me, best part of the 3.5 Kai was Cell's rendition of Limp Bizkit's My Way. We get a great Frank Sinatra cover for the excellent season 3 finale, and a Nu-Metal acid trip to match with the speed of Kai.
as someone that watched abridged and the kai abridged videos as they were coming out back in the day, vegeta and cell's "i'm gonna do you a f***" "EXCUSE ME?" "NEVER!" exchange will never not be hilarious to me. it's such a nonsense dialogue, but it's just so very perfect. it lives in my head rent free.

The joke with Gohan "peaking" is because he stops training after this and pursues a normal life.
And because of that, when the next bad guy shows up, he's weaker than before.
But to defend him on that, the world was at peace for YEARS after Goku died, so--

Also, while he does get stronger, he's arguably never as strong by comparison again and Goku and Vegeta are back to ruling the show, so he has arguably peaked in terms of character importance too.
I can't remember if it was burn-out or just the sheer frustration with fighting Toei over copyright or both that made them stop at Cell. They were planning to do the Bojack movie where Gohan is the lead hero. The canon of that was when Kai's planet blew up, the space pirate he had sealed in its center was freed and Gohan and co. had to fight him and his crew.
They still do other content and got involved with other companies like Rooster Teeth. And if memory serves some VA's from Funimation took a strong liking to them... Minus Sean Schemel.
It was both, the burnout and constant toei takedowns. Plus they felt they couldnt so the Buu saga justice due to its already overly jokey setup so it's not as easy to parody.
Gohan's Great Saiyaman days would have been hilarious in abridged.

Honestly, 16 should be alive in the _canon_ show as well. Android 8 is also a pure machine android and was revived by the Dragon Balls, so Android 16 should have also been brought back.

The "You peaked" joke did not age well with the new Dragon Ball movie that came out recently which gave Gohan some much needed focus.
If you want another abridged show to do, I would suggest Sword Art Online Abridged by Something Witty Entertainment. It's honestly just as great as DBZA.
Gohan didn't peak yet. They just didn't know at the time. This DBZA episode came out in 2019. Gohan's new peak is the 2022 Dragon Ball Super movie.

In the year of our lord 2022 Gohan finally unpeaked, but yeah for a long time there Gohan fans were very down bad as the kids say.
Saddest thing about Dragonball Z - the wish that brought everyone back from the dead didn't revive 16 because he was a machine, not alive. I think Cell Abridged's line about "We both know he didn't have a soul" might have been a double shot against Ginger's not having souls and androids not either.
I prefer to think that he just chose not to be revived because he was done with fighting.
It's suggested by TFS that he refused to be revived.

Apparently they're coming back with "bits" (think DBS:A and the bits like Goku meeting Black or Whis acting like a couple's therapist between Goku and Vegeta concerning Hit) instead of full episodes starting 9/2/23!!

Ive been asing this for all od dbz abridged but do they not know the joke with the solar flare?
Cell calling out being ranked as 4th favorite villain is due to the Cell Saga and Cell in the original was not liked by the general Japanese audience. They saw him as sort of just a copy-past boring villain for DBZ up to this point, when really he's the only one that is all about the long game while the rest of them were more along the lines of "here's my motive, and we're doing it now" when Cell was the "here's my motive, and we're gonna take time for it to enjoy", aka he was the first major "long-con" villain even though he was the result of production meddling of making Toriyama change the main villain of the arc multiple times as others have mentioned.
Plus the "Gohan piqued" is more the idea of while he DOES get cooler in the Buu saga, he was originally going to be set up as Goku's replacement as the main character, but they brought Goku back and negated that choice, plus he doesn't really do all that much in the Buu Saga, he has cool fights and moments here and there, but they're sadly kind of sparse. He DOES have the cute romance story with Videl but she also falls victim to most of the female cast (beside Lazuli/18) where despite being a fighter themselves, they end up being regular housewives with them being fighters is even sparser than when Gohan actually gets to do anything. Granted what he's doing is important and it's in character for him and I AM happy for him, it's just sad that up until SUPER recently, it's mostly been the "Goku" show more than anything. The most recent movie does a REALLY good job at better tackling it though. I haven't followed the recent manga installments so I'm not 100% sure how it's doing with the rest of the cast in terms of balancing them with Goku.

We have not seen post Super Hero movie Gohan yet but I really hope he won't be downgraded when he makes his next appearance in the manga (after the manga version of the movie is over). I want Goku to be surprised by how strong Gohan got while he was away.
