Punisher is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers, released on June 17, 2020 by Dead Oceans. Bridgers first established herself with her 2017 debut, Stranger in the Alps, a widely acclaimed indie rock effort. In the years preceding her second album, the California native formed the bands boygenius and Better Oblivion Community Center. On Punisher, Bridgers' songwriting is somber and sardonic; deeply personal in nature, it explores topics like dissociation and fragmenting relationships.
Punisher was recorded over a year and a half at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles and reunited Bridgers with producers Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska, who also engineered Alps. Its recording process was collaborative with its liner notes crediting over two dozen prominent musicians, including Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, Christian Lee Hutson, Jim Keltner, Blake Mills, and Conor Oberst. Punisher was supported by five singles "Garden Song", "Kyoto", "ICU", "I Know the End" and "Savior Complex". Upon its release, the album attracted acclaim from music critics, who celebrated its open lyricism.
Imagine getting to listen to “I know the end” for the first time again
i would pay money to be able to do that
@@sageyvonne3513 same, I can’t even begin to describe how it made me feel when I first heard it. It was just wow
My girlfriend made me leave 100 gecs early to go to Pheobe’s set at Forecastle and now I just have to say wow… I know the end has to be my current favorite song now after hearing it for the first time LIVE
God to hear it live again is my biggest wish tbh
@@dillondunaway im so jealous wow
You guys should have an episode where dad shows you an album you’ve never heard
Definitely!
i agree!
they did with silk sonic
@@waluigi521 weren’t they both hearing it for the first time though? I meant more of the dad showing his son an album he loves
turning the turned tables
I love that Elliott Smith's album is on display in the background while listening to this album, since she wrote the title track as an ode to him. Adds a layer of depth to this video. Really awesome.
glad someone noticed!
Same with Sufjan, lots of Illinoise influence on this record
i was thinking the same thing 😭
@@turningthetables maybe figure 8 next?
@@FiendishFuManchu Especially on I Know The End
Just a bunch of guys sitting around listening to Phoebe Bridgers
"Graceland Too" has a subtly powerful opener. "No longer a danger to herself or others / She made up her mind and laced up her shoes."
Behavioral health hospitals and the like often disallow any materials that could be used for harm, including traditional shoelaces and even drawstrings for hoodies. This is a fine example of Phoebe framing a whole narrative with a couple of select details. Realizing this recast the whole song for me and made it completely new. Note also that Phoebe's skeleton black sweatpants (merch) don't have a drawstring as many others do. The solidarity with those suffering from mental illness really gets me. Phenomenal music and artist.
I love that song, especially if you listen to it after Julien Baker's Favor and Lucy Dacus' Please Stay. They all feature as the backing vocalists on each other's tracks (like a mini boygenius reunion) and kind of tell a coherent story.
Can confirm they have a drawstring
@@hollysmith8813 Damn! Good to know, thanks.
Ive been hospitalized 4 times and i don’t think i caught this. Hm. Neat observation.
@@Blue-gu5vq damn 4 times huh
She is equal amounts funny and devastating and I think that’s the magic of it.
I love how you guys mix it up and do artists like Phoebe, Charli, The Strokes, etc even though these videos unfortunately probably won't get as many views as a rap/hip-hop album would. I hope as you guys keep doing that as you continue to grow
exactly. really shows that they don’t do it for the views rather because they’re passionate about music as a whole. massive dub for this channel.
i 100% agree with this, also, i need yeezus
it also attracts a new audience!! this is my first time watching them
they got popular from radiohead, first vid i saw from them was a moon shaped pool
I think this gets them more variety of listeners which would give them more attraction to get a listener to watch more
These are honestly so cathartic. I get to live a fantasy of showing my dad music I care about and him being interested
Haha, perfectly said man
I’m really lucky that I have something like this with my mom. It’s awesome and I love watching it with other people
I was thinking this too. The image of a dad laughing at Phoebe’s lyrics made me emotional because they are funny in such a dad way, I wish my dad would pay attention to something like this.
felt
:(
If he loves the mix of these songs, then we need to get this man some Bon Iver
YES. 22, A Million!
22 A Million, or For Emma, Forever Ago would both be good. They're both classics in their own rights 🔥
YES! Any of the albums would be amazing. I would also love to see them react to Repave by Volcano Choir (another Justin Vernon project)
they might already listen to bon iver, i see the 22, a million cover on the shelf in the background of some of there videos.
OMG yes
this was my AOTY of 2020. This shit dragged me through that shithole of a year.
Same, this and folklore kept me sane.
dont forget mac miller
this and folklore are the soundtrack of my 2020
Yes, punisher and folklore for 2020 and evermore and Lucy Dacus’ Home Video for 2021.
Yeah, me too. I cried my eyes out to Moon Song more than a few times that year. It felt like we were having a conversation about our pain when I listened to it. It became my favorite album ever and the inspiration for my first tattoo.
Also the other people harmonizing with her in “Graceland Too” are Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker!! They all are in a band called Boygenius and yes it’s amazing.
haha i just commented that they should do boygenius and Turn Out The Lights
I know the end is such a rewarding and incredible ending to a phenomenal album, Phoebe knocked it out of the park with this one.
One of my favourite songs oat, the best closing track I've ever heard
Legit started watching for the Phoebe music but stayed on till the end JUST to watch the reaction to the last track.
Now this is an album that I did not expect all, but am so glad you guys decided to listen to. One of my favorites albums ever
Just watched Dear Depression and wow it’s powerful ❤️
same
they hinted at it in the Cudi MOTM3 video
U should listen to more albums
In terms of emotional intensity and painting pictures with lyrics and just in terms of greatness I think this album matches Joni Mitchell's "Blue". So, if you haven't heard that one, do yourself a favor :)
Savior Complex is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard
it’s my favorite out of the album bro it hits so hard and it’s so real to me
one of my favorite tweets I saw was that pheobe bridgers makes music for people who’s main goal in therapy was to make their therapist laugh
Imagine if they do a Beach House album. Dad would either hate it or become entranced by it
no way he would hate any beach house album
Good call. They have to do beach house. Probably bloom although devotion is my personal favorite
Do beach house!
yes bloom
PLS PLS PLS
would really love to hear his thoughts on mitski (especially “be the cowboy”), lorde’s “melodrama”, bon iver “for emma, forever ago” and taylor swift’s “folklore”
You really threw in the whole sad girl genre in there (also I feel like Puberty 2 or Bury me at makeout creek would be better for mitski introduction I think)
@@EC-vw6pd been relistening to bury me at makeout creek for the past few days and I think you're right! such an amazing album omfg
Why was melodrama the best thing ever I want to relive
Heavy on Folklore, feels like what "did you know there's a tunnel under ocean blvd" was for Lana. I would also love to see Evermore. Her lyricism and storytelling only get better and better, and I think it's a shame that her most popular "radio" songs don't really embody that in the same way.
this is exactly what i needed rn. long day at school doing coursework and now watching my favourite channel right now listening to my favourite album. much love to you two
In a few years you’ll find this channel nostalgic so enjoy it now
For sure, I also here some Sufjan 'Illinoise' on this too, and of course she collabs with Cudi! So very well curated background pieces
I’m honestly jealous that your dad is hearing this for the first time
fun fact ab graceland too: the harmonies are sung by lucy dacus and julien baker, who along with phoebe make up the group project 'boygenius'! they've got an album together as well that would be awesome to see yall do, it's impeccable. (the song itself is written about julien baker's struggle with addiction, which is really heartwarming but also makes the track a lot more emotional.)
I love the Boygenius EP and the songs featuring each other as background vocals from all of their most recent albums. I feel like Julien's Favor is about her struggles, Lucy's Please Stay about being a friend who wants to help and Graceland Too is about her getting better.
Love how good a time this most be for both of them. Son excited to show his Dad new music. Dad enjoying spending time with his son and vice versa.
Legit the whole channel. It’s so beautiful. HUGE props to these guys :)
That's how I feel whenever I listen to music with my dad!
I know exactly where I was and what time it was when I first listened to this album. That’s how much it stuck with me
if you don't get goosebumps in the second part of "I know the end" I really don't trust you
It’s like the only song where I get chills for that long everytime
Would adore you guys doing a Big Thief album! One of the best modern bands imo
YESSS
please do her debut album, i think your dad would appreciate the transition from motion sickness to funeral!
So excited to see him reacting to an album like this! I also see Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens in the background, would be great to see him listen to that for the first time as well👀
either/or has been on repeat for me
Surprised there was no mention of Elliot Smith being her main influence and the person she sings about in the song Punisher. Especially since Either/Or is in the background!
my Dad doesn't know any Elliot Smith so I figured letting him know wouldn't really add much
@@turningthetables you have to show your dad Elliott Smith! I'm named after him :)
@@turningthetables please tell me u are planning on showing him some elliot smith!! by the way, I think because the internet by gambino would be a really cool album for him to listen to as well
@@turningthetables listen to either/or !
does Elliot sing ‘whatever you want’ in Halloween? I swear to god i hear his voice in that song and I know Phoebe loves him but I can’t find her say it anywhere
Breathlessly waiting to see how your dad will react to "and I will wait for the next time you want me like a dog with a bird at your door" because I just want to watch people hearing that line for the first time for the rest of my life
Pheobe Bridgers is just such an incredible storyteller and I love that you can see such a diverse group of people really FEEL her music. There aren't any artists like her and I love that you guys reacted to this 🤍
Man, the turnaround from Halloween to Chinese Satellite is the hardest part of listening to the album, I’m so glad that y’all caught the vibe. The center of the album is very downbeat, but very worth it to get through. The ending is amazing. That voice is inescapable. The main takeaway from the album is that it’s a giant reference to her other recordings from the past 4 years. Halloween and Punisher are reflections of her collaboration with Conor and her Bright Eyes influence, and Graceland 2 is a reference to Boygenius. But I Know the End is a culmination of all of her previous work, and a new direction for her. Stunning album.
Really love the diversity in album choices lately! Would love to see some Fleet Foxes,
I think crack up would blow his mind
@@bassman2189 I think crack would blow his mind
The production of this album sounds like it’s under water. I love it. Do Helplessness Blues or Endless soon!
Helplessness Blues! yessss
One of my personal 10’s. I was introduced to Elliot Smith early in my life by my dad, and I immediately became attached to Phoebe’s music, as it shares a ton of obvious influence (which she wears on her sleeve in this album) of Elliot Smith. “Punisher” in the definition this album uses is an obsessive fan, which is how Phoebe relates herself to Elliot on this album.
one of my favorites of all time, always hits me right in the feels and usually makes me cry
I must have listened to this album about i think 20-30 times now, and everytime it gets a tiny bit better, its unlike any other album in that aspect, usually i listen to an album about 3 or 4 times for it to fully grow on me and it never gets any better than that, but this album for some goddamn reason keeps getting better and better, i dont understand why, but i absolutely love it.
The Steve Martin comment during “Graceland, Too” is such a dad fun fact. I love it 😂
how weird is it that when they play the songs here they sound much cleaner and clear than they do on spotify LMAO
No they don’t?!
I kind of Wish Conner told his Dad how the title track "Punisher" is about her musical Idol Elliot Smith (especially because one of his albums is in the background),
so glad you fellas covered this album, I absolutely love it!
Gotta show dad The Strokes debut album next
Can't wait to see your dad reacting to the SATURATION trilogy... manifesting
They have to do Brockhampton now they’re splitting up 😢
@@bloopydoopy7191 Kevin will fall in love with them and then proceed to be devastated
Phoebe's voice has such an ethereal quality even without the effects added throughout--it kind of floats within the instrumentals.
YESS to the «GRL PWR» cup! Loving the representation of female musicians on the channel
im so glad you listened to this, i love this album, hopefully you give Apricot Princess a shot
I think his dad would love the emotion and jazz elements
Yes!^
ooo good call
such a good episode!! kyoto is a legendary song
Love this album. I would also love to see you react to 22, a million, The Suburbs, Carrie & Lowell, and any The National album (Sleep well beast??), which is perfect for a dad hahhaha.
My favorite girl. I love her so much, her music has changed my life. I discovered her last summer via a friend and I'm so grateful. She's incredible. Stranger in the alps means a lot to me cause it was the first album I heard and instantly fell in love. Punisher is just amazing. I got the cd for Christmas and I'm just so in love
this is my first time with these videos that it really feels like im listening for the first time again. i cry to this album weekly but this made me feel so vulnerable again. thanks guys
I've only recently found your channel, and I stumbled across this video (posted on my birthday! What a nice gift) and I just love the energy you guys have, the things you focus on. I like that the videos are simple and straightforward in the best way - we get to see you two enjoy and album and make accurate commentary. It's really lovely to see what you guys will pick out from the record, from the songwriting to the instrumental pieces. Thank you so much!
i’ve been waiting for this one!!!! thank you for reciting :)
this video healed me. i love this album so much, it’s so nice to see you guys enjoy it too.
You and Kevin really helped me man it’s really cool to see someone appreciate music like this brings a new perspective to the music I listen to
this is the first video i’ve watched from you guys and i think i’ve found my new favourite channel. sharing music with someone you love is such a joy
I love how you experience the songs so intensely and discuss about it so delicately. Lovely to watch, especially with such a good album!
Glad to experience my first listen of this album along with you two. Always love the great conversation you two have about each track coming from two different generations of listeners.
i was obsessed with punisher around this time last year, and watching this video was like listening to it for the first time again. thank you!!!
Never thought I'd see my favourite album on this channel, love you guys bc you're super insightful and funny, keep making vids!!!
This is such a pure and wonderful video! Great album and I was so happy to see your Dad have his mind blown. Bless!
This is one of my all time favs and it brought me a lot of joy to see y’all experience it together :)
I didn't know this album before but now I've been listening it every single day since the patreon release. Simply amazing. Thanks!
Love your recommendations, I fell in love with this album now
I got obsessed with this album around early 2021, so obsessed that it was my most listened to album of the year by a LONG SHOT. the repeating themes in the lyrics and the catharsis of I know the end and just the muted dreamy mood of the whole thing. it's just incredible. I'm so happy your dad liked it
Usually the albums you guys listen to are ones that aren't my personal favorites, but ones that I still know of/respect for their impact on music. This one, though, is close to my heart, so very excited to watch!
What an absolute treat! I just discovered Phoebe Bridgers via this album a few days ago.
Glad to see you guys reacting to one of my fav albums of 2020
This is so fun to watch. You guys share a really special connection.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH. One of my favorite albums of all time seriously
More tender records like this... Love to see dad's reaction to these. Also - props to having the Elliot Smith record on display. The track, Punisher, is about him. Also - may I suggest "i'm wide awake, it's morning" by Bright Eyes? Dad already likes his voice...
I second IWAIM
and with Kevin's country background, I think he might actually really like Bright Eyes
Definitely
Kevin and Conor, thank you for introducing me to so much great music. First I really got into Flower Boy, and now this. Such a great selection of albums so far!
Just found this video and I gotta say what a ride. It was so cool to see your Dad react, for the first time, to these songs and the interesting devices she uses throughout the album. Love the way he instantly picked up on the lyrics being so powerful and descriptive of specific scenarios. I think that songwriting is one of the things that sets Phoebe apart. Much love yall
oh my god i never expected you guys to react to someone like phoebe bridgers 😭 i fell in love with her as an artist in the middle of last year. but im so happy to end my night watching this :)
This is what I like to see! Phoebe is one of my all time favorite artists ever-I have a giant tapestry in my bedroom of the album cover!! U guys just keep covering stuff I like I’m so ecstatic
Did not see this coming. Great album, great vid. Keep it up!
this is awesome! one of my all time fav albums
One of those albums, you can hear the influences but it’s a standalone unique masterpiece
You guys gotta do Jeff Buckley's Grace. It's a little more old school of an album but one of the best
I DMd Connor and he said Grace will be the first record that Kevin shows him! Waiting on that to drop.
Yesssss one of the greatest albums of all time 💜🍷🕊
First time hearing this album and it was great. Glad I reacted with you guys.
my fav album, thank u sm 4 ur content
Literally screamed when I saw this. I LOVE THIS ALBUM
I love your comments on the vividness of Phoebe's imagery. Her lyrics are a great demonstration of how specificity in detail can paradoxically make lyrics feel more universal.
Thanks for this show. Wish id found this channel a long while ago
This channel is becoming my favorite channel so quickly. It's crazy good.
moon song was my song of the year, I cant explain how much this song means to me. the whole album is probably one of my favorites of all time, I love phoebe so much she is such an amazing artist.
6:32 “It comes into your face”
Sometimes I’m not sure if Kevin is trying to lay these out in conversation or if it just happens naturally
Lol.. That unfortunately came out naturally.
I listened to this and her other project 2 days ago, such a beautiful experience 🙏🏼
Really love your channel keep up the great work !
Well I just binge watched all your videos and I love how you guys explain music because that’s how I feel about all these albums and songs. Hope you are well! Love these

I love this album! I still get goosebumps every time I listen to it. I was surprised to see an indie/folk rock album on this channel but it's a welcomed change for sure, I can't wait to see more.
I love garden song.. so beautiful. the ending gives me chills.
Keep up with Phoebe Bridgers, what a great artist! You guys are the best!!! Greetings from Spain! :)

Absolutely love this video. Just like Kevin I've never heard of Phoebe Bridgers or the album before, so it was amazing to experience it alongside you guys. Truly some awesome content, can't wait to see more!

This is insane! Yesterday I've been listening to the album for the first time!
These videos always make me so happy
It's truly such a great experience to listen to someone else appreciating Phoebe - she's one of my absolute favorite artists
Also, I highly recommend boygenius the supergroup that Phoebe is a part of
My favourite album of all time, such a beautiful record
I listened to this album after you mentioned it in the motmIII video and was really glad you pointed it out.
Love you guys thanks for the good content as always
I recognized her name from the track she featured on with kid cudi on MOTM3 (amazing feature btw) but never dug into any of her own work. Thanks for putting me on!
i listened to this album with my grandma and my girlfriend, who had shown me the album, and by i know the end my mostly orchestral/lyric-focused grandma was jamming the fuck out, everyone was giggling by the end of the song just because of how massive and loud it was lol
i love your channel bc you both have great personalities and chemistry so i could watch any video even if it’s not my type of music and i end up liking new music, thank you
i love punisher by phoebe, one of my favorite albums, im so glad you did this video
